For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics. (Note to the right-minded: After a misstep on the original release, Martina McBride's version of "When Love is Gone" is back.) -Tammy La Gorce

Finally released.......2007-05-23
If your Christmas isn't complete without listening to this music, this CD is a must buy. The audio quality is excellent despite the age of the film. Michael Cain and Belle come out crystal clear in their solo and ensemble work. The surprise of this album is the inclusion of two tracks (one by Beaker and Bunson and one by Scrogge's primary school teacher) that are not in the film. They are fun but unexpected. I could only ask that the CD last longer with such beautiful traditional music, but alas there is no more music to include. Maybe they could market Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island together in the future?
Good CD.......2007-02-14
My wife has been looking for this soundtrack for years. We were very happy to find it and get it so fast. This has some of the best music ever written for a movie.
the muppet christmas carol cd.......2007-01-19
Amazing the songs are so cleaver and i have bee waiting for this for a long time, it has been out of print great cd and the movie is so awesome!!
Holiday Classic with Kermit , Miss Piggy, and Michael Caine.......2007-01-12
The score from The Muppet Christmas Carol is full of the spirit of Christmas. The familiar story by Dicken's is given new life with the great score (mostly written by Paul Williams). Great energy is relayed to the listener as Scrooge (Michael Caine)is painted in words and as Bob Cratchet (Kermit the Frog) sings with his co-workers 'One More Sleep 'Til Christmas'. The love song duet between Scrooge (Michael Caine) and his fiancee during a ghostly vision brings great pathos to the character. For lovers of the Muppets and or Dickens, there is no better way to enter into the spirit of the season.
Awesome.......2007-01-08
These are some of the most heartwarming songs. I even find myself singing the ones about poor Mr. Scrooge.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23
Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Meshugga Beach Party is actually Mel Waldorf (with drummers Shig Komiyama and Tom Rockwell), and his Twenty Songs of the Chosen Surfers is just what it sounds like: traditional Jewish songs played in the style of surf music, i.e., klezmer meets Ventures. Sound a little hokey? Well, maybe. But the two styles mesh surprisingly well. When this reviewer's Jewish father saw Pulp Fiction and Dick Dale's "Misirlou" began playing over the opening sequence, he expressed pleasant surprise that Quentin Tarantino was using a Yiddish folk song in his film. And he wasn't too far off--the tune actually began life as a Greek zeibekiko dance. Worth checking out if you'd like to hear a new twist on "Hava Nagila" or "Shalom Alechem"...or just like surf music, well-played. --Benjamin Lukoff
Album Description
Ask any big Hollywood macher, and they?ll tell you that it?s the latest craze with the boychicks and maydeles! The parting of the Red Sea and the curl of the Banzai Pipeline to the sands of the Sinai and the waves of Waikiki to the Diamond District to Diamond Head! The songs of the Jews and the sound of the surf guitar. So grab your surfboard, a bobby-pin for your yarmulke and don?t forget the sunscreen! The whole mishpuchah will be there to kibitz, nosh and dance the Hora at the Meshugga Beach Party! Cowabunga dude!!!
Customer Reviews:
it gets in your head...and that ain't bad.......2006-09-26
If you love Jewish Music or surf guitar... you will have a new favorite album. It got my Dad's toes tapping... and I don't think he ever liked either Jewish Music or Surf Guitar... so anyone may like it. It is that good.
Enjoy.
Why can't we all just get along?.......2006-01-10
Not that there was any great hue and cry for such a thing, but this album answers the musical question, "What would happen if you crossed classic Jewish melodies with surf music?"....(hey, you got choklit in my peanut buttah!...) And somewhat surprisingly, the result ain't half bad...The two genres go surprisingly well together, or perhaps more accurately, Hava Negila, Dreidl, et al. done by a surf band, as surf tunes, are a natural...soon, you forget you've heard them any other way!
A hora on the beach.......2005-12-23
You'd think it's a huge divide - lovers of surf music and those who favor traditional Jewish melodies, but the two can come together here and dance a very exciting hora on the beach. A surprisingly enjoyable musical fusion with excellent guitar playing.
even my Bubbe loves it!.......2005-12-22
This record is awesome! The Jewish melodies are great with the surf guitar sound - I love it, my kids love it, my Mom loves it, even my Bubbe loves it. Now they all want to go surfing - oy vey!

Christmas Ivory, Indeed.......2004-10-24
I won't dispute conventional wisdom: The all-time greatest Christmas album is Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Having said that, a pair of solo piano albums are tied for the red ribbon: Cyrus Chestnut's "Blessed Quietness," and this gem from Dave McKenna.
Dave McKenna is the pianist's pianist. He's a legend among jazz pianists, a musician who never saw fame equal to his talent. Every musician knows his name. "Christmas Party" was recorded in February 1997, when McKenna was 66. Sadly, it was among his last recordings. In 2002, Nat Hentoff wrote a moving article about McKenna where he revealed that McKenna could no longer play piano. He suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome, due to severe diabetes.
McKenna lives a private life nowadays; but thanks to Concord, we have a few of his albums to enjoy. This is among the best. It's replete with classic carols, and even includes three original tunes by McKenna. It's an intimate hour with one of jazz's finest pianists, and the perfect setting for a snowy December night.
When I think of Dave McKenna, I'm reminded of Jaki Byard. Both are relatively unknown to most audiences. But if you ask musicians, they'll tell you these men were blessed with talent and inspiration. Each man's influence on his peers, and the way fellow musicians approach their instruments, is incalculable.
If you're looking for a wonderful Christmas disc, buy this one. If you want to discover a remarkable jazz musician, try Dave McKenna. I'd recommend "An Intimate Evening with Dave McKenna" (1999) and his Maybeck duo with guitarist Gray Sargent from 1992. But start here. This is a beautiful album, an absolute gem -- and I guarantee you'll find yourself playing it every Christmas.
NOTE: This album was originally issued in 1997 under the title, "Christmas Ivory." Concord's first printing contained an error that caused the disc to skip a few seconds into Track 1. If you own "Christmas Ivory," you'll note the music is the same. And if you plan to buy a used copy, I recommend you avoid the original title. I own a corrected copy, but it's possible you'll encounter a first-edition.
Unsung Hero.......2003-12-07
Forget the title. This is no mere seasonal novelty or "jazzed up" treatment of familiar tunes. Dave McKenna is the essence and personification of "swing," and no pianist, past or present, has mastered the left hand-right hand synchronization of jazz piano playing more effectively than McKenna. Tatum had the stride style down, Garner could keep the 4/4 going with massive left-hand chords. But McKenna lays down a walking-bass line second to none while managing to layer independent, lean and thoughtful melodic lines on top of that sure foundation. The music he creates offers as much to a follower of the modern piano scene as to a fan of the old stride-piano school.
This album is as ambitious and impressive as Dave's other recordings, which is to say that, as a Christmas program by a jazz instrumentalist, it is simply second to none. "Jingle Bells" might as well be "I Got Rhythm" or "Lady Be Good" under Dave's hands; "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Midnight Clear" communicate with the exhuberance and harmonic/melodic clarity of "All the Things You Are"; and the McKenna original, "Snowbound," manages to be fresh yet as communicative as a familiar standard.
Not long ago the NY Times carried an article about McKenna, indicating he was no longer playing due to bad health and that his medical expenses had left him virtually penniless. Yet he expressed surprise that some listeners would still remember him let alone find him newsworthy. That portrait squares with my memory of catching him at the Copley Hotel in Boston in the mid-80's. There were 10-15 other people in the room, none paying much attention to the music. At the break, I asked Dave how it felt to play night after night when no one was listening. "What do you mean?" he replied. "Apparently you were listening."
A perfect cd to drink eggnog and be merry..........2003-12-01
Everyone who knows me, knows I don't touch eggnog(unluss it's really spiked with something strong), I go straight for the martinis at any Christmas party and this is the perfect cd fir sipping martinis under the mistletoe, and smokin cigars by a warm fire place(with some warm brandy too), this is a great kicker to any holiday coktail party, it's good jazz,b y jazz piano legend McKenna, you'll love this cd so much, you won't want to get drunk, because you really want to lesten to this one, it's more than lounge, it's actually pretty deep, yet light & fun too. So listen, drunk, smoke strip and be merry.
Over the years we have come to expect a lot from Dave.......2003-11-30
I have been a Dave McKenna fan for several years. During this time, Dave has spoiled me with his work. I have come to expect a lot from Dave and he always delivers. On this particular cd, Dave has overwhelmed me with exellence. I find that his unique arrangements are mindbogglingly good. I wonder what happened? He must be getting better with every year. Maybe this is his best cd of all time, I listen to this year round!
For this cd, Dave used a good repertoire. I know he picked tunes that everyone who has class will enjoy. Like I said this is the best cd of his career, and is a highlight of his long lustrous career. Surely Dave, you've really outdone yourself with these timeless jazz and swing arrangements.
Recommednation: If you are looking for beautiful swinging, jazzy, arrangemtns for christmas time or anytime this cd is for you, if you have any class at all you'll buy this, just listen to the samples and you'll hear why. [...]
The best Christmas swing cd of all time!.......2003-11-29
Oh wow I'm in love with Dave McKenna's romantic and lovely style. He is a true jazz piano legend. I love this, this is my favorite Christmas cd, it's so good I listen to it year round. Everyone I've played thsi for loves it and I gave six of them out as Christmas gifts last yaer! This is timeless jazz and swing, all great Christmas tunes. THE BEST!!!

This is FABULOUS!.......2006-12-08
As another reviewer said, this CD will not "spoon-feed" you the tune, but if you are a singer this is a great karaoke CDG. We just got it in the mail today and spent the past two hours singing to it. The other CDG I ordered was horrible in comparison. The musical arrangements on this are contemporary and the graphics are crisp and well-cued. You'll feel like a star! This is my first Party Tyme Karaoke CDG and I enjoyed it so much I'm off to look at the rest of their titles. I highly recommend this.
RP.......2006-12-08
This is a nice CD for real singers. The accompaniments don't spoon feed you, so you really have to know the songs. I'd recommend it for a soprano or tenor. It is a bit high for most radio-sing-along voices.
Don't Waste Your Money!.......2006-01-03
This was the worst item I have ever purchased from Amazon. The music doesn't even sound like the songs should, and no one could tell what the songs were. Don't waste your money - this collection is by far the worst karaoke CD out there!

Elton sure knows how to throw a good holiday party! Or at least someone at the record label does. This diverse CD with personal liner notes by the superstar songwriter throws the ancient surf rock licks of the Ventures together with the contemporary genius of Rufus Wainwright, the eccentric rock of the Flaming Lips and El Vez, plus some Christmas classics from the pop, soul, and hip-hop worlds. With 21 titles, including two Elton John tunes that bookend the package, it's one of the best value holiday discs and most enjoyable compilations you can find. From the Beach Boys "The Man with All the Toys" and Springsteen's live version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" to the Ronettes' "Frosty the Snowman" and Otis Redding's "Merry Christmas Baby," your party won't stop, even for the bluesy workout of "Please Come Home for Christmas" by the Eagles and the Band's haunting original "Christmas Must Be Tonight." Can you find these cuts on other Christmas records? Sure. But can you find them alongside the Pet Shop Boys' "It Doesn't Often Snow at Christmas," one of the record's real finds, or cuts by John Mayer, OutKast's "Player's Ball," the uniquely indescribable Kate Bush and others? No, you can't and that's the beauty of Elton's memorable choices. Proceeds benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Highly recommended. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Only Good Reason To Buy This CD Is To Support The Elton John AIDS Foundation.......2006-12-28
I was tempted to buy this CD last year when it was available from Starbucks directly, but having owned other - and better - versions of the songs listed, I decided not to. Once more I am making the same decision this year, skipping it even though I've recently heard Rufus Wainwright sing some memorable original - and both traditional and contemporary - Christmas songs at a holiday concert with his sister Martha, other members of their family and friends at Carnegie Hall (I will say that Rufus and Martha know how to have a great holiday concert!). The only good reason to buy this holiday mix of songs - which I presume were selected personally by Sir Elton John himself - is for the purpose of donating at least some of the CD's purchase price towards the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which is a most notable, laudable goal. Last, but not least, the final song on this CD, "Calling It Christmas", is a new, original song from Elton John with lyrics written by Bernie Taupin; if I'm not mistaken, it was recorded with Elton and the entire band playing at one of his favorite Atlanta, Georgia studios.
Not a cool party to me! Hip-O Records yanked six tracks from the original version! Buyer beware!.......2006-12-20
The various artists compilation CD "Elton John's Christmas Party" was first released in 2005, but it was manufactured by the Hear Music imprint for Universal Music Enterprises. That means it was available for purchase mainly at Starbucks Coffee retail stores, with a retail price of $14.95 ($18.95 in Canada). Now you'd think Hip-O Records would be doing us a favor by re-releasing this set earlier this year on their label, thus making it widely available for purchase everywhere. But alas, that's not the case, because for the 2006 version of this set, a full six tracks have been removed from the original tracklist. Those six tracks are:
- "Frosty The Snowman" by The Ronettes
- "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" by Bruce Springsteen
- "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" by The Crystals
- "Playa's Ball" by OutKast
- "St. Patricks's Day" by John Mayer
- "Please Come Home For Christmas" by The Eagles
I'm not sure why Sir Elton wanted to include the OutKast and John Mayer tracks in the first place, and I don't consider those to be a great loss for a Christmas compilation. But here's what irks me that many people may not even notice: the Ronettes and Crystals tracks were both originally released on the classic 1963 Phil Spector holiday rock album "A Christmas Gift For You" (possibly the greatest holiday album of all time, if not one of the greatest). And if you look carefully at the cartoonish CD cover artwork, Sir Elton happens to be holding a vinyl copy of one of the old reissued versions of this album (when it was renamed "Phil Spector's Christmas Album" for reissues during the 1970s and 1980s). So not only has Hip-O yanked the two tracks that came from that classic Spector album, they didn't even bother changing the cover art for the new downsized version of the set.
Oh, and did I also mention that the suggested retail price of the new downsized version is $15.98. That's higher than the suggested retail price of the set when it had 21 tracks and was sold mainly at Starbucks Coffee stores in the U.S. This is yet another example of paying more and getting less, which is oh so woefully typical of corporate America these days. Personally, I can't understand why Sir Elton would go along with these changes, but I'm sure licensing fees had something to do with it.
So if you really wanna grab the better version of this compilation, my suggestion is to scan auction sites like eBay every so often, or buy a copy from a private seller here at amazon.com if one is available. Unfortunately, the original 21-track version of the set is now out of print.
Elton John - 'Elton John's Birthday Party' (Hip-O).......2006-12-17
If you like Christmas music, you should undoubtedly get plenty of enjoyable plays from this fifteen track disc. Was actually quite impressed by cuts provdided by artists like the Beach Boys, Flaming Lips, Chuck Berry, U2, The Pretenders and The Band. Only tunes here that I, personally didn't care for were the songs by El Vez and Jimmy Buffet. Musically speaking, Sir Elton can most certainly assemble a good holiday trail mix.
U2's "New Years Day" = holiday song ?.......2006-12-09
U2's "New Years Day" = a holiday song ?
I wouldn't bother except that the money goes to charity (hopefully).
The best Christmas songs collection available.......2006-10-12
I bought this last year when it was on sale only through Starbucks. I really enjoyed it last christmas season.
I think it is the best christmas songs collection by different artists available.
Half of the songs I knew before and knew that I loved them. It was a very pleasant surprise to find out that the rest of the songs were on par with those i knew.
Go get it!
