4 out of 5 stars A collector's item with a few problems.......2007-07-03

I enjoyed this album. I too anticipated it, and made sure that I had enough time and space (not in the car, not while I was doing something else) to listen to it. It starts well--the Donald Lawrence touch. I have become accustomed to the new studio sound that they have all been showcasing on their solo albums, and Donald catches this sound nicely. It really is not true to their live sound of many years ago, but I guess the Clark Sisters have changed with the times--in many ways. I really enjoyed the remakes--enjoyed singing along. As any tried and true fan, I had all the ad-libs and fillers down to the note. I like how the reggae beat on "World" is updated to a more contemporary reggae beat. But didn't anyone else have questions about the strange voice on "Instrument." I understand it may be Blanche from Tri-City, but why is she on here? And if she is going to be, why isn't she at least named as a guest vocalist to save me the trouble of figuring out which one of the sisters had lost it? Also, it seems that Twinkie was a bit hoarse. She wasn't soaring as she usually does with that crystal clear voice of hers. She deals well with it, but her hoarseness took away some of the "sangin' " that we are accustomed to hearing from the group. For that matter, Karen seemed to be hoding back too. Anyway, a good buy. If you're going to be a Clark Sisters connaiseur you need to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Take it for granted...A Must Have!.......2007-06-20

I love it...
A CD that will inspire to change from the beginning till the End.
Got to love the Clark Sisters and their legacy.

Warning:The CD does have it technical issues like Karen's 'It's Not Over' because you can tell the difference between studio and LIVE...Overall great buy!

5 out of 5 stars AND THE WINNER IS>>........2007-06-17

They have to get a grammy for this. I understand why is been in the top CD's since it came out. My favovite is 'Livin'. It's one of the new tracks, and they are sangin for Lord! I enjoyed them doing the old songs too. I love "Blessed and Highly Favored" THe orginal cut i think was on Twinkie Solo CD. Between The clark sisters, and J. Moss they could put on a Jamin concert. That would be a blessed concert. If you a true fan of the music you will love this CD. They all look good and sound good, give them the Grammy please!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-06-13

I bought this album the very day it came out! This album is a masterpiece. Blessed and Highly Favor is my favortie song on the album. I really like how they all did there thing on each song.. Good luck to you ladies.. And now I see there's a live dvd.. OMG IM IN HEAVEN! I just ordered that. Can't wait for this to be released.. Now I can get the visual to them singing all of these songs from the live album! PRAISE GOD!

5 out of 5 stars The Clark Sisters CD is breath taking !!!.......2007-05-31

Have you ever had a CD that you where casually listening to all of a sudden stop you dead in your tracks? That is what this CD will do to you.

I was nonchalantly listening and then the song "Instrument" came on then everything stopped and up went the praise. And if that was not enough, the following song "You Heard Me Cry" just floored me.

The whole album is well put together with the old and the new. The sisters take turns taking the lead on specific songs which really accentuates how talented each sister really is. "One Last Time" (Live)should be a CD that you will play for years to come.

If you have never really listened to the Clark Sisters before I would advise you to listen to the samples and then order/buy it immediately. You'll be glad you did!

One Wild Night? Well, that's not strictly true, as this live album was recorded at Bon Jovi concerts spanning three decades. But why be pedantic when the result is a live album that effectively doubles as a greatest-hits collection? Bon Jovi's songs are tailor-made for stadiums and arenas, and, from classic fist-in-the-air rockers ("Livin' on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Runaway") to lighters-in-the-air numbers ("Keep the Faith," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "Something to Believe In"), the choices are suitably larger than life. The career-reviving single "It's My Life" sounds right at home, as do great covers of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" (recorded, appropriately enough, in Johannesburg in 1995) and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed with Sir Bob Geldof). --Robert Burrow

5 out of 5 stars Live Concert Versions of Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-19

"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" by Bon Jovi, Is a compilation of Bon Jovi's best songs, performed at various concert events from 1985 to 2001. For Bon Jovi fans, it's classic Bob Jovi and a Must Have! If you like music recorded from "Live" performances, You will love this album! If you prefer "Studio-Cut" versions, you may not like this album because it has the sound and feel of a live concert.

1 out of 5 stars zero stars.......2005-11-13

One WEAK night!...zero stars if that was available. I never realized Bon Jovi was this bad a live band. They obviously get a LOT of production help in the studio because this album (several different concerts in several different venues) is ALL bad. Sorry for them and sorry for me for buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi rocks.......2005-08-09

I found this CD to be extemely uplifting, great music to listen to while driving.

5 out of 5 stars not a greatest hits album.......2005-05-14

This is not Bon Jovi's greatest hits, and that's the only bad thing that anyone who likes Bon Jovi can say about this. It's a fun collection of some live great live performances. Bon Jovi is great in concert, interacting with the crowd, and building up the energy and fun. You can hear that the audience and performers had a great time. If you like Bon Jovi, then this is certainly worth the money!

You may remember The Dan Band from the hit movie "Old School", cursing their way through Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart", or crooning Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Making Love" to a 13-year old girl at her bat mitzvah in "Starsky and Hutch". "The Dan Band Live" captures their raucous high energy live show, featuring Dan's version of 80's and 90's diva classics such as "Free your Mind/I Am Woman", "Shoop/Whatta Man/Never Gonna Get It", "You Oughta Know", "Genie In A Bottle/No Scrubs/Slave 4 U", and much more.

This CD has some very clever and funny remakes of songs that we all know. You can hear the crowd in the background, they're so animated! It's a great lifter for when you may be in a bad mood. My favorite song on the album would have to be Total Eclipse of the Heart...it's amazing!

5 out of 5 stars CAPTURES THE EXCITEMENT.......2006-02-26

Having enjoyed this CD for almost a year now (it was released in April '05), I finally got a chance to catch The Dan Band live last night at The 9:30 Club in D.C. Dan and the boys played all of this CD (minus the Christmas song) along with Muskrat Love. All I can say is that's the most animated I've ever seen the crowd there. This is an excellent CD that captures all of the excitement that is The Dan Band. Now all they need to do is release the Bravo special on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A Mature Sam Cooke.......2007-07-26

I can categorically say this album was the cream of Sam Cooke. The reason for saying this, is to counteract the previous comment made by A. Sturley. Sam did not change his voice for this concert. Sam was getting more mature. His voice was breaking. Which I preferred. Had he lived longer, he would'nt be too far of Bobby Womack or a more polished soul singer. Also him moving with the times, who knows how he would really sound like had he lived longer. A. Sturley, if you do not believe me,buy and listen to the album (Keep Moving On).Both albums will always make music listeners take notes. The One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club was Sam Cooke delivering at his very best!

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17

This album is a priceless gem that you will treasure forever! Sam Cooke metaphorically rolls up his sleeves and really works up a sweat in this amazing live concert at the Harlem Square Club, giving an earthy, gritty performance that is spellbinding. Sam's delivery crackles with raw energy! He belts out the songs with an emotional intensity and sense of urgency that whips his audience into euphoric frenzy.

Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.

You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12

Sam Cooke delivers an unbelievable performance in this one. When I first got it, it was difficult for me to appreciate this live album. But as time passed by, the more it grew on me. And now, it's truly one of my favorite albums. Any soul music fan has to have this one.

The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21

This is soul at its very best! No matter how many times I listen to this album, I NEVER get tired of it. Sam Cooke went on to inspire thousands of musicians and, after hearing this album, you'll know why. Since the new movie "Ali," starring Will Smith, has been released on DVD and VHS, a lot of people wonder about the beginning where the actor portraying Sam Cooke is performing. Well, this recording is exactly where they got the idea for the beginning of the film.
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!

5 out of 5 stars should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19

This is the live album to outdo all other live albums. I am a head banging, rock and roller, guitar nut and this is still the best live album ever!

The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.

He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!

You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.

A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.

This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.

What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.

Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It leaves you feeling exhausted!.......2007-05-31

I've been following Tommy for 30 years, and he NEVER ceases to amaze! How one man can pour so much energy and love into a 2 hour performance night after night is beyond me! I don't know about Tommy being one of the World's great guitarists, he IS the greatest guitarist, and I dare anyone to find a better all-round player anywhere in any genre. Michael Hedges was the only other player who could express his personality and musicianship the way Tommy does, and if this double album doesn't convince you of that, take a look at Tom's concert DVD's. He is a genius musically, as well as being an extremely warm and funny guy at the same time. A rare combination. You're a great ambassador for Oz, Tom. Keep 'em rolling out. (If you enjoyed this album, and you haven't listened to "ONLY", do yourself a favor and buy it now!)

5 out of 5 stars Tommy's live and still knows how to play!.......2007-01-10

While a few years old, Tommy still has that magic when it comes to his Maton, not to mention his disconnected bass line provided by Thomas Thumb! Great album which shows what most people know, Tommy cannot only produce great studio albums, he is one of the best live entertainers and players around. By the way Tommy, you need to play more at home in Oz!!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2006-12-11

This is a tremendous value, considering how many of his "standard" pieces are represented. If you want an introduction to Tommy, this is a good choice. Endless Road would be my other recommendation.

I found the musicality to be first rate, yet the mixdown suffered from what I assume was less than ideal recording environment. Tommy plays through a small stage setup with his eq/reverb being pretty much self-contained, and this recording sounds like they got the house mix rather than a more suitable master.

Not to worry, you'll enjoy every minute of it. That's why I gave it 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Prince is just plain Prince........2006-08-09

For better or for worse, the man still has not changed much in the 22 years that I have been a fan of his. I still see that his concerts go big on the most recent material (i.e. things he has with a new album) while alot of the oldies are glossed over and played for about 15 seconds (enough just to get one refrain in):(
I swear to you, this box set is sorta the same old thing you can expect from this man. I paid $50.00 for this and got three CD's worth of music (some great, some so-so and some just overly long stuff) You mostly pay $25.00 for the music and $ 25.00 for the box itself with the booklet inside! I almost feel the rube but I am willing to give this a second chance. So far, not so pleased though:

Prince is a brilliant genius. What can you say he loves to jam. And in one of the CD's "It AINT over", there the man is playing "Girls & Boys". Which come to think of it is almost 8 minutes of him & his band and the only reason this is considered "Girls & Boys" is because the chant of "I love you baby, I love you so much" is said by the audience at the beginning of the song! How is that "Girls & Boys??!?? I love that song, but with no Eric Leeds onstage with him, that song is NEVER to be played! The same treatment is given to "Peach" ANOTHER great song which leaves U thinking "What the hell..?" Prince obviously dances to the beat of his own drummer. Lol And so it goes on.
The second CD has alot of Prince just doing his regular "slow jams" melodies and I swear you will think because you see on the CD listing for "Diamonds & Pearls" and "Do me Baby" but get ready for just 20 seconds of each song (thus, that is considered long enough for a track listing (???)) Then get ready to hear yet another over-long rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Anna Stesia". I swear, why does he love "Nothing.." so much? It was never a hit for him! It's his song so whatever...("Adore", "The Beautiful 1's", "Take me with U" and "Raspberry Beret" are given good treatments, but "Diamonds & Pearls", "Free", "Do me Baby" and "Starfish & Coffee" are given the bum-rush jobs)
Obviously, as always the man wants people to know his newer material "Muse 2 the Pharoah", "1+1+1 is 3", "Everlasting Now", "Avalanche" et al are all mostly played their entire length. That's fine, but don't be SO impatient to run through your catalogue so fast that certain songs (new or old) suffer from BEING TOO SHORT!!!!! He USED to take his time with his songs when the concerts were simpler (think Controversy tour 1981), when "Purple Rain" hit, the concerts became more rushed in my opinion.

Save the $50. This set has bad false advertising, plus it's from a period of time where Prince's "Hero" Larry Graham got too much stage time. (I thought Sonny T was Prince's hero???)

5 out of 5 stars Prince One Nite Alone... Perfection Y'all.......2005-11-30

I have never heard a live concert of this nature! I am an avid Michael Jackson. Pound for Pound Prince takes his live music to an entirely different level. This music is estacy! This is absolutely a wonderful concert collection that I spent nearly 2 months looking for and then I found it at the Virgin Music Mega Store in Time Square!

I dont need to go song by song... from start to finish its an absolute roller coaster of nothing but music!

Soul, Jazz, and R&B under one roof... too much!

I've also got to say, I wasnt a Prince fan until I saw his concert live in Las Vegas. After that I was hooked!

YOU DONT NEED TO BE A FAN TO HAVE THIS COLLECTION ON YOUR IPOD!

THIS ALBUM KEEPS ME BUSY WHILE ON THE SUBWAY!

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

Dismissed by some as the redneck Led Zeppelin, yet beloved by a faithful and grassroots following for just that reason, Lynyrd Skynyrd sailed above it all--even the dark tragedy that befell them less than a year after this landmark live set was recorded in Atlanta. A triple-platinum perennial in its classic-rock heyday, this 25th anniversary edition has been digitally restored and authentically remixed on vintage '70s equipment to great effect. The band's performances have also been resequenced to their original running order to accurately recreate the Skynyrd '70s live experience.

Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars "one more from the road" ROCKS & ROLLS with the best of the "live's".......2007-07-24

for 3 decades, i listened to the original album on both vinyl & maxell cassette tapes. while reading the booklet enclosed in the c.d., i read how they were able to add additional dialogue by ronnie van zant, additional crowd reaction, additional guitar solo licks, even an additional "Cream" cover, all unavailable on my double album set. also, alternate versions of afew songs were added on disc 2. all that i can say is "WOW" !!!!!!!!!

a job splendidly well done, in this remastered, reissued "WORK OF ART"!!

ANY skynyrd fan MUST HAVE this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Allmans apples, Skynyrd oranges.......2007-06-07

This is Skynyrd at their peak, I will argue this was the best rock band on the planet at the moment this album was recorded.

I could partake in the Allman v. Skynyrd argument for eternity. I'm a Sourthern musician myself, and I think there's room for both bands and both albums (as well as many of their other works) in any collection.

I find it intriguing that the aforementioned Skynyrd ripper listed later Black Crowes and Widespread Panic albums as better than Skynyrd live; the "Allman wannabe" label is a much better fit for those latter-day jam bands. All the guitar players I've ever known (including Al Kooper, who I don't know but who I respect the hell out of, considering his pedigree) thought the Skynyrd axe men were very progressive for their day.

The Allman-Skynyrd comparison is apt only from 10,000 feet. Yes, they came from the same area, and many of the influences were similar. But Skynyrd followed the more modern English blues-rock paradigm (see: Cream, Free), and they were more of a pop-song-type band (in the gunslinging, Allmans tradition, of course).

I would even venture to say that Skynyrd followed in the Allmans' footsteps. Indeed, Brother Duane is up there with Hendrix, methinks, and I find the Allmans' work during his lifetime unimpeachable and some of the best modern music ever made.

It gets iffy for both bands after their key members passed. Skynyrd was poised to become even bigger and better with the addition of Steve Gaines -- listen to the guitar work on "Street Survivors." And Ronnie Van Zant knew what the hell he was doing. Meanwhile, everyone knows what happened to Greg and Co. after Duane's untimely death. (I think I sense a pattern here.)

I saw both bands in the space of a year in '75-'76 (including all 3 nights at Fox for Skynyrd), and there was no comparison at that point. Allman biographer Scott Freeman considers that '75 Allman tour to be the band's nadir, and the Skynyrd boys were going for the gold about 9 months later.

I don't think any other Southern band has come close since then. . .

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!.......2007-03-19

This is one of the best all-time live albums in rock history and it depicts Lynyrd Skynyrd at their peak. These songs never get old and are just as great if you are at a party or listening alone!

4 out of 5 stars Capturing the essence.......2007-03-08

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" captures the bands innovative sound live during the group's ascendancy. Their following during this time became more than a "cult" following and after having played on the road for years, their sound became tight and smooth. They could replicate the studio sound quite easily with some improvisation to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This CD!.......2007-02-02

Having seen Skynyrd blow the Who right off the stage in 1973 this album audibly shows what they could do. You can feel it. Southern Shmuthern! It's Rock and Roll at it's best. If you didn't know where they were from you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. People get hung up on this southern rock thing. BFD!! These guys worked to get where they got and are anything but mediocre. I've read the same thing about the Beatles.. that they were mediocre at best! Yeah right!!
This album throws you back in the seat from the moment you drop the needle in the groove. I've worn out vinyl copies, thrown many 8 track copies out the window of my car, more vinyl and cassette and have the original release of this on CD (that sucks) and now this. If you are going to buy only one Skynyrd album, make it this one. They never put on a bad show!! Not even the lineup that is playing today!! They can still smoke any band right off the stage!!

Amazon.com essential recording

This double-disc firestorm was the first official live release from Vermont's favorite jam band, and it is both a roaring celebration of and, in many ways, a fitting conclusion to Phish's first decade of genre-bending, head-popping rock. Recorded in 1994, A Live One finds Phish wringing everything they can out of every song (four clock in at more than 10 minutes, another at more than 20, and a sixth, "Tweezer," at more than 30), whipping themselves (and the audience) into a frenzy with a high-octane attack long on instrumental pyrotechnics and short on subtlety. By 1996 they had taken this no-holds-barred approach as far as they could, and they would begin to temper their frenetic energy with a mellower, airier, and funkier approach. But this collection remains a vital snapshot of the band at its initial peak, a time when no studio could have hoped to capture the densely packed Phish experience. --Marc Greilsamer

The Grateful Dead analogies may apply to legions of Phish-head devotees, but musically this double-live set reveals a band with the fluency of early Allman Brothers minus their focus and muscularity. A neat blend of hippie whimsy ("Gumbo") and extended jams ("Stash," "You Enjoy Myself") that aren't as tedious as you'd guess. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Freakin' Amazing.......2007-01-16

First of all, I'm only using this "Kid" Title because i haven't made a purchase at amazon yet, but i just have to review this for any people unsure about this album. This is THE BEST live album ever made, except for maybe Phish's Madison Square Garden '95. Phish is my favorite band and 'A Live One' got me into them. When i first had it, it was a burned copy, so i didn't even know the song names, i just knew that i loved them. Even now, pretty much every song here is performed flawlessly, and should be the comparison mark for every other performance by Phish or any other live band. With the exception of Tweezer(Which just goes on too long, it's good up until about the 9 minute mark), every song is so Freakin' Amazing. I reccomend this to any beginner of Phish, it will make you a real Phan. Just buy this CD as soon as you can.

4 out of 5 stars For God's sake, get back together already...........2006-10-03

This was my first Phish album. It is a rarity nowadays, an actual official live album by a great live band. This album is an extraordinary place to start, with great versions (vastly superior to their studio versions) of Bouncing Around the Room, Stash, You Enjoy Yourself (my favorite), Wilson, Tweezer (30 minutes and 55 seconds of it), and The Squirming Coil (twice as long as the studio version, with an absolutely beautiful piano solo at the end). Chalkdust Torture is here too (even though I prefer the studio version). The songs go on for quite some time, and the music is very reminiscent of Frank Zappa and progressive rock. Phish has more in common with Zappa and prog rock than with The Grateful Dead (a band they are often compared to). I do like Phish quite a lot, but sometimes their music doesn't have much depth. But their musicianship more than makes up for it. They recently broke up, which I think is ridiculous. They (especially Trey Anastasio) gave the usual "spend more time with the family...tired of the road" drivel, then Trey released a solo album and started touring again. Perhaps there's some dissension in the band that we don't know about, perhaps because of songwriting credits or something along those lines. Trey takes credit for the bulk of the material, but as in Pink Floyd and The Band, it could be misleading. Or maybe not, who knows? When their bank accounts start to run dry, they'll get back together....

4 out of 5 stars As far as coherent live Phish albums go, this one is a great representation of the band in their prime.......2006-10-02

I got into Phish around 2001, hearing a live bootleg of a Las Vegas show. I believe it was the song "Colenol Forbins Descent" that drew me in, with its epic size, great lyrics and awesome musicianship. I instantly ate up everything with the "Phish" name on it. All bootlegs, studio albums, box sets, everything. "A live one" has a very acurate portrayal of Phish during this time of their career, and the listener is treated to many extended jams of their studio tracks, live improv, the infamous vacuum cleaner that they use as an instrument, and all the live stage antics that Phish provide.
Composition wise, Phish are strong artists that know how to extend and improv on their footholds and craft great wandering experiences, and "A Live one" captures just that.
Featuring two discs filled to the brim with jams galore, the listener will not be disappointed, even the sound quality is top notch.
However, my love for Phish waned as of late, and I grew tired of their typical and predictive jam directions. Each rendition of their songs became so monotonous and predictable that I couldn't take it anymore.
Maybe I am the only one, but this music is really for the drugged out, or those that absolutely LOVE Phish and long-winded jam-band music. For this music lover, the all too often long winded jams and abstract random music can get annoying.
I personally feel that Phish was more of a fad band than anything. The creative aspect of this band seems to be at best a novelty and seems to die out after much repeated listens, even their later albums fall short of pleasing.
Still, "A Live one" is a great portrayal of a once great band in their prime.

5 out of 5 stars Why I love Phish.......2005-12-18

It would take a while for me to tell you about this band but thats not what this review is its about music and why I still dance. The first song "Bouncing around the room" will have you bouncing around the room. What a awesome song to begin your journey into the mind blowing music of phish. second is "stash" wich has catchy melodies from the members of this awe inspiring band love the "maybe so maybe not" part. Third is "Gumbo" I like "gumbo" but its not a fav its got some good energy in it. Next is part of a song that they named "Montana" good music to get you ready for the trip you are about to take in "You Enjoy Myself". Some of the most catchy guitar work from Trey is in this song. The jam in this song will have you saying "Oh My God" . Love the focus on the keyboards, Lead Guitar, Then Bass Guitar. The Vocal Jam is quite amuzing but awesome. Next is "Chalkdust Torture" Good aong to have you dancin aswell. Next is "Slave to the Traffic Light" Incredible energy on the jam part that builds up to yet another awesome jam. Next is "Wilson" A true fan fav with the audience great vibes between both the band and the audience in this catchy tune. Next comes an experamental "Tweezer" I tell you rthis song is full of spaced out guitar work in that the effects used on this song have to be priceless and Trey can use his Efects verry well. "simple" awesome song good energy. "Harry Hood" another good song that has the audience chanting "hood" after "Harry most of the time on this song. Last is "The Squirming coil" Great middle part with up tempo beats and lyrics. This is one of my fav cd's of all time so all you who want to meet phish this is them in their prime. They have always been known for their live shows and this one is one of the best live albums they have so dont think about it buy it and welcome phish into your cars and homes.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-12-02

Well i gotta say, this is like the best phish purchase i've ever made. Most songs are amazing jams with crazy solos my trey that just blow your mind. The quality is pretty dang good, except for while my guitar gently weeps, there's something weird with the quality on that one. The only real problem i have with this is tweezer, it's 30 minutes long, most people would think "Wow, thirty minutes of tweezer?! How can that be bad." well for half of it it's random noises that might be cool at the concert, but just get annoying after a while on disc. I feel it's a waste of disc space, just look at tweezer on live phish 19, it's 10:30, and sounds much better than this one. Well even with tweezer i give it 5 stars, because all the other songs are so good and well performed.

Expert musicianship, a diverse repertoire, and an active sense of humor become an explosive mixture in the hands of the Airmen. Recorded during a 1976 tour of England, Live One shows the genre-twisting band in all its maniacal glory. Western swing standards, rockabilly romps, R&B chestnuts, and a rash of truck-driving songs all find their way into the potent blend, not to mention their offbeat, drug-addled originals. Bill Kirchen's nifty guitar work, Andy Stein's punchy fiddle, and Bobby Black's pedal-steel forays provide the meat: no matter how goofy it gets, their formidable musical chops keep it all together. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars The Commander Rocks.......2007-03-14

The Commander never came out to Australia (that I know of anyway) so I didn't see him and his Airmen but listening to his live albums got me part way there. I bought all his albums up until the first, settled band broke up; I think there were about 6 or so albums. The best two were the Armadillo live one and this one. When first released on vinyl, this "Live One Here" got fairly ordinary reviews amongst the critics who much preferred the Armadillo album. For my money, the Armadillo was only slightly superior which means they are both great live albums from the rockinest, swinginest, stonedest, weirdest country-rock band of all time. Billy C, The Commander, Andy Stein, Bobby Black, Bill Kirchin; all fantastic musicians. Their choice of cover material was fantastic and in the Commander, Bill Kirchin, Kevin Blackie Farrell (friend but not band member), Billy C and John Tichy, they had some mighty fine songwriters. If you survived the 70's, loved beer, girls and reefer, loved to rock out and loved your music dirty, sweaty and with a sense of humour, then you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars BEST LIVE COMMANDER ALBUM.......2005-12-29

5 out of 5 stars IT DOSEN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!.......2005-06-20

I have bought many of the Commander's recordings over the years and finally had to break down and re-purchase this CD. My vinyl album was destroyed and I lost the cassettes that I had recorded over the years, so I had to have this CD. I just recently saw the commander and his new Airmen this past fall in Hartford and he's still rocking as ever. This album though is the commander at his best and in his prime with the best group of Airmen ever.
This is one of the best live albums that I have ever heard. Commander Cody is much more that just that guy who recorded Hot Rod Lincoln, he is a gem of a classic s--t kickin rocker.

5 out of 5 stars Never to Old.......2004-11-19

I first listen to this music when I was about 15 on a little ranch in Wyoming, and I'm still loving it. This album made me the hippie cowboy I am today. Still listenin to it in Wyoming 25 years later.

I have seen the Commander with and without the Lost Planet Airmen over many years... I own most of the titles listed here in Amazon, but this is by far the most bang for the buck. I have introduced many friends to the Commander by gifting this CD. After more than 25 years of listening to the band ... this is one of my all time favorite alblums in my music collection. This CD captures the band at the zenith of it's artistic arc. For a group that has a reputation for great live performances, this is the place to start.

Having recharged his legendary status on 2005's spectacular Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane: At Carnegie Hall, a previously unheard "lost" recording from 1957, the late John Coltrane solidifies his refreshed standing with a new generation of jazz fans with this exciting discovery by his own quartet. Recorded in 1965 at New York's Half Note club, One Down, One Up isn't as stunning a find as the Monk album. Its recorded sound, taken from a radio broadcast, is pretty raw and, whereas the Monk album represents a rare meeting of these giants, there are other live albums from the mid-'60s by the Coltrane four. None, however, are as good as this one, which finds the tenor and soprano saxophonist making magnificent mountains out of modal molehills through his relentless surrounding and reshaping of notes, never coming up for air. You don't listen to epic performances like the 28-minute title track, 23-minute rendition of "My Favorite Things" (his bread and butter tune) and 20-minute "Song of Praise" so much as immerse yourself in them. You simply need to experience them for their rising intensity and spiritual weight, for their earthy beauty, for the band's locking gears: pianist McCoy Tyner's ferocious hammered notes, drummer Elvin Jones' whirlwind figures, bassist Jimmy Garrison's eloquent lines. Thriving on melody, which he would abandon in the sonically assault live final phase of his sadly shortened career, Coltrane keeps listeners in the palm of his hand even as he pushes into unchartered territory. --Lloyd Sachs

Album Description

Coltrane and his legendary band--McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums--regularly played at downtown New York's Half Note in the mid 1960s. The group used the club's flexible set times to accommodate Coltrane's musical suites and far-reaching improvisations. As Half Note founder Mike Canterino said, "I just wanted the music and to let the guys go ahead and do what they want to do."

The importance of these influential performances has grown throughout the years as musicians--especially saxophone players--passed around bootleg and lo-fi copies taken from the 1965 radio broadcast. It was a time when Coltrane was pushing his musical boundaries, and one can hear the evolution of his style on these recordings. As his son Ravi Coltrane says, "You can hear everything that came before and begin to hear where the music was going."

The music captured on One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note features the songs "One Down, One Up" (perhaps the highlight of the collection), "Afro Blue," "Song of Praise," and "My Favorite Things." The unparalleled performances showcase a band filled with fiery passion and a master at the crossroads of his musical path.

One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note features liner notes from journalist and author Ashley Kahn, who wrote A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album as well as the upcoming The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. Also included is an essay by the CD's producer, Ravi Coltrane.

5 out of 5 stars Classic quartet on fire.......2007-04-14

If you are new to Trane this might not be the place to start but then again, understanding the enormity of his musicianship is part of the essence of knowing Coltrane's music. Personally, I have beeen listening to Coltrane since he was alive and thriving and pushing the limits of jazz. What you will find on this gem is exactly that, pushing the music, jazz music specifically, beyond the usual perceptions. His legendary solos are captured here and one highlight of this disc is the extended version of the lovely and unique interpretation of "My Favorite Things." Coming in at over 22 minutes this beautiful song allows Trane to express the things he couldn't on his album of the same name. The driving drum beats pounded by Elvin Jones, the extended solos and lingering piano work of McCoy Tyner and thumping, solid bass of Jimmy Garrison are perfect companions to the relentless notes coming out of Trane's horn. His improvisation is a lesson in the technique of going out there and bringing it all back home. Melodic yet challenging, Trane's vision is never more eloquent than on this song. Your jaw will drop. The grunts and groans of the musicians, the silence of the crowd probaly from being in awe in the presence of greatness and the erruption of fans apreciation will put you in the Half Note some forty-three years ago. This is the classic quartet at it's height. The extreme "One up ,One Down" opens with Garrison reaching out for your ear as the quartet slowly fills in and goes beyond the limits of comprehension as to how long a song can be stretched. Coming in at nearly 28 minutes any musician can benefit from listening and a casual or rabid jazz can only marvel at the stamina, endurance and intensity of Trane's classic quartet and omnipotent horn. The spiritual quality of Trane's music is expressed in "Song of Praise", which is about as intense as it can get. I can only imagine the concentration, admire the effort from afar, many years since that night in New York but I can feel his energy anew with the release recently of this priceless masterpiece from the vaults. The individual songs each have their own attraction but the complete performance is the way the disc should be appreciated; it is a study in the complex world of jazz outside the paradigm. The announcers voice and breaking up of the music offers a glimpse into the real world of performance where the breaks are barely long enough to wipe the sweat from one's brow; Trane and his quartet must have been sweating profusly and barely had enough time to quench their thirst before entertaining again. If you are a jazz fan you will love this disc. If you are a Trane fan you will experience nirvana listening to him blow again. This is recommended for any serious music fans collection; Trane lives on as his legacy continues to grow.It doesn't get much better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Music for musicians.......2006-12-07

I personally like this tipe of jazz. I enjoy hearing endless variations that are accompanied by some kind of joy de vivre, when one almost feels the energy and music booming from speakers, moving your whole mind and body in the rhytm. After the song is over, you are often lost and it takes some time to regain ones composure. On the other hand, there are people who find this kind of music particularily nagging and painful. They are not willing to give any chance to artist or the song involved, and music just flows past them without touching them.

But something bothers me with this record. It feels like Coltrane is somwhere else, although his instrument is still there and plying. For me, it's like hearing perfectly performed practice for fingering, perfect but still somehow rutinely done. There are flashes, where you can hear Coltrane snap into it, and music becomes more powerfull and gains colour, but this is over in such a short time that this feeling of non-existance remains. Like it has never been there.

Bear in mind that this is the record which you will have to grow into. For which you will have to learn how to like it. It will go one piece at a time, but if you grasp the sense, then the full enjoyment will be prsent, and you'll return over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the announcer and tunes cut off .......2006-10-29

I was really annoyed by the announcer stepping all over the best parts of some of the solos but even more annoyed that the best tunes are cut off probably only half-way into the tunes. Just when Trane starts stretching out, the announcer comes in and the songs are cut. Get the Village Vanguard recordings first. I saw Pharoah Sanders do a version of My Favorite Things at Blues Alley for over an hour and it was a spiritual experience that will never be equalled. I hate to think of what I missed with these recordings... it's depressing.

5 out of 5 stars Hard work but worth it........2006-08-22

If you like the later, freer, more open works of John Coltrane then you will absolutely love this album. It is hard work though, and not for the uninitiated. It requires a decision to engage oneself with this incredible musician, to open your spirit and allow his music to effect, move and change you. If you are jumping in to John Coltrane for the first time, I do not suggest that you start here. May I suggest earlier works like 'Soultane' or 'Bluetrane' as jumping in points.

5 out of 5 stars classic 'trane.......2006-08-07

the sessions at the half note present the classic coltrane quartet at the height of its powers. this version of afro blue rivals the cut on "live at birdland."
