5 out of 5 stars perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19

Carol Reed's veteran cinematographer Robert Krasker's quirky angles under Reed's direction perfectly framed the ready-made-for-an-art designer bombed out shadows and stark, isolated street lights of post-war Vienna and its underworld. Unique to cinema history the whole score (but for some canned incidental cafe music) was just the brilliant zither playing of Anton Karas, adding his nuances to every dramatic transition. Krasker won an Oscar, and Karas was nominated.

The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.

The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.

One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.

Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.

Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.

The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant "ethnic" melodies.......2007-01-22

The tunes on this disc have a nice, comforting sound. Some of the selections are haunting, some have a peasant-liveliness. Nothing great or revolutionary, but plain good zither music, very enjoyable.

We bought it for a friend. They loved it.

4 out of 5 stars The first man of the zither.......2006-03-10

The CD didn't sound as good as the movie sound track. Ity sounded a bit rushed as if the sampling during the transfer was not sufficient

5 out of 5 stars superb recreation of original film score.......2006-12-15

This recreation of the original film score is far superior to recordings made by Karas, in fidelity, dynamic expression and nuance. The sound clips from the film are refreshing, although, I would have liked to have had at least one by the beautiful Alida Valli. Play the cd in your computer and watch the artist in the studio playing The Third Man Theme.

2 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.......2006-03-30

This is not original soundtrack from, yes, of course, one of the very greatest films. It's a weak, metallic, often even off key botching up of one of the arguably greatest soundtrack of all time. Best thing is to look for "The best of Anton Karas" cd. The only ping is that even on that collection - the harrowing 'Anna Walks Away Past That Smelly Skunk Martins' (as you can maybe tell I actually do like Harry Lime way more than that ugly little snitch!) - isn't on either.

1 out of 5 stars Must be my equipment?.......2006-03-11

I tried this disc in 4 PC CD players, 1 progressive scan JVC DVD/CD player and a PS2. On the PC's you saw a graphics page with areas in yellow. Lower right section had two areas to click. One for a video of Ms. Gertrud Huber playing the Harry Lime Theme by Anton Karas. The other had web site links. The tracks would not play. The (20 tracks) would be visible as blocks in the PS2 screen, but each had to be selected and there was no play through. There was the addition of dialogue at the beginning of each track (following the film/music structure). As the CD would come up (on the PC) you would hear the Harry Lime Theme playing. Amazon replaced it with another disc that did the same thing, which helped me decide to get the movie (I would have preferred to have a vehicle for hearing the soundtracks that would work in a PC, or a CD player). I am not qualified (or sensitive enough) to 'rate' the movie. I will say if you have never seen it, rent it and fast forward (treat yourself) to the last 2 minutes (see http://imv.au.dk/publikationer/pov/Issue_02/section_3/artc3C.html). Play it back with no music, then with music. Play it back at different times and through different moods and you will appreciate one of the finest works of film in existence coupled with one of the finest pieces of music ever produced. No single 'scene' can show you the promises of the past and let you feel the horror of regret. A mystical view that soon reveals Anna walking toward the camera, through the tree lined road, passing Holly is a statement and genius unto itself. The Karas compositions are brilliant, but this one is an everyman's masterpiece. What a gift (of course see the film. It is after all - superb!).

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2006-01-21

Alas, this CD has the music from the movie played competently by a woman named Gertie Huber with snippets of dialogue tossed in. Don't be deceived by the packaging! If you're looking for the original dialogue and soundtrack--get the movie on DVD from Criterion. If it's the original music you're after, as I was, make certain you buy a CD with the music played by the original artist: Anton Karas on the Zither. Bottom line: perfectly pleasant. But I learned my lesson--read more carefully before I order!

5 out of 5 stars "one of the Greatest Themes ever ~ The Third Man".......2003-06-12

Who was Harry Lime? Has he anything to do with the Cold War, intrigue involving spies, or has this just been another of what has been termed as "The Third Man"? From the pen of Graham Greene, directed by Carol Reed we move mysteriously through the sewers of Vienna. The cast gave us suspenseful performances with Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard, Alida Valli and oh yes, Orson Welles as The Third Man. Nominated for several Academy Awards, won for Best Cinematography ~ as Carol Reed won for Best Director at Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. But what made this classic film even more classic was the zither and composer Anton Karas ~ only to become one of cinemas most recognizable scores, the ultimate "Harry Lime Theme" sending memories of betrayal and suspense that filled the big screen.

Silva America has done a magnificent job in putting together this World Premiere recording of the score, this time around with Gertrud Huber playing the solos ~ along with The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nic Raine. Entire album with dialogue inclusive within each key cue is brilliant. When you play this "film-score-buffs" classic, you will once again visualize the film or want to see it again on DVD ~ watch the gripping story unfold as Orson Welles recreates his character through the complete score of "The Third Man"!

    Album Description

Dreams of Sedona begins with a gentle but driving rhythm in which Alexander sings of dancing on Sedona's red rocks in a dream state. This sets the stage for a cinematic instrumental album that's an adventure to experience. Choosing dreams that contained elements of the landscape of Sedona, Arizona the music conveys the feelings of both the dream and the wonderful reality of this beautiful place.

Dreams of Sedona has rich musical texture with various themes through the many cuts on this lovely CD. Alexanders music is unique. It connects directly to the heart and touches us there, awakening our deepest and highest emotions. I cannot overstate how highly I regard this music--I listen to it all the time.

    Product Description

"Visions and Dreams" is the long awaited follow up to "Progressive World". Autumn’s Child once again blends the native American flute with colorful instrumentation including: harp, cello, piano, guitar, percussion and more! The first half of the album was written with the "global chamber" sound they have made popular and are so well known for. Sensuous melodies balanced with world music grooves. These arrangements are beautifully orchestrated and well crafted, using the particular instruments with specific purpose and intent that enhances and enriches the compositions. Music that is accessible and appeals to a variety of ages and all walks of life. The last half features a more jazzy influence with pieces like "Open Sky" and the beautiful arrangement of "Be Thou My Vision" to the reggae-ish groove, "Patchouli Breeze". This recording has amazed listeners at how these wood flutes can play so many different styles of music... and all on one cd! The 3 interludes offer abbreviated sonic markers with the native flute and a String Orchestra from Prague Czech Republic, licensed from an upcoming PBS documentary entitled, "Redemption Road". The opening 2 compositions are almost considered one... with "Painting A Dream" played in a dreamy, lyrical style followed by "Avenue Of The Villa", a bit more up tempo with tabla driving the piece. "Midnight Rain" is an absolutely beautiful melodious piece with flute and cello weaving light in the darkness with incidental french horn lines adding to the mix with piano. "Sketches Of Autumn" is sort of a bouncy shuffle that drifts into a lovely arrangement of Neil Young’s "After The Goldrush"arranged for native flute, cello and guitar. Also worthy of note for this recording is the use of the bamboo bansuri on "An Angel’s Whisper In A Bamboo Garden" as well as "Sunlit Waterfall". "...Bamboo Garden" is one of the most meditative, hypnotic pieces on the album. (hint: listen deep into the cd for an improvisation with bansuri and tabla) "Visions and Dreams" is a prime example of what "new directions" for the native American flute is all about! Autumn’s Child continues to create new sonic territories with their creative approach of fusing different musical designs. Mya Duran - New World Music

5 out of 5 stars Catharine, take me away..........2006-10-08

Himilayan mountaintops, African tundra, floating through space... or time... This album has a "bigness," a maturity, that so many ambient, new-age, chill-out albums lack. It seems to come from a place deep in the heart, not a formulaic, cerebral effort aimed at commercial success. There is a rhythmic and chordal accessability here that is truly refreshing - the listener can 'latch on' to a discernable melody and chord progression in these songs, and call it 'their own' on first listen.
Hard to believe this is a first effort for this stellar songwriter, musician, and producer.
    May there me many more!

3 out of 5 stars Great for a First CD.......2005-09-30

Catherine Duc describes her style of music as ambient, Celtic, electronica and world. Listening to her CD, it is somewhere in that realm, but to be honest, she has an original style to her music that her description falls short. She does herself a disservice by trying to categorize her work as being similar to someone elses. Her style and compositions are very much her own.

It is ambient, without a doubt. It does have a world feeling, sometimes on the Celtic side, but it is much more original than that. The compositions are all put together on electronic keyboard. It is definitely electronica, but it could stand to be orchestrated. There are ten tracks to this CD, but times are not listed. The CD runs about an hour.

The compositions are mostly above average in development of the melodies and she shows in this CD why she has received awards for her music. The melodies flow well and are mostly memorable.

The electronic keyboard is a blessing and a curse. While allowing the artist to control the compositions, some of these compositions would benefit from having some real instrumentation backing up the delightful keyboard. Her a synthesized instruments sounds synthesized. Some of these compositions deserve some orchestration, and that is a down side to this CD. There are some compositions that could stand some additional power. Some of the melodies jump at the opportunity to be bolder, yet they appear to have been held back. Again, it could have been the fault of the keyboards or production issues.

The compositions are well worth listening to, regardless of the presentation. From the opening notes to the end of the CD, Ms. Duc presents us with some fine ambient selections.

The material here is good. Ms. Duc does well with what she has at her disposal. But some of her compositions could be dressed up a bit with some better production values. She has some compositions that are softer ambient pieces that she does well, but there are compositions here that are strong and should be allowed to impact the listener. Ms. Duc can write a strong melody, and she should allow them to come through. Her softer pieces are soothing and very lovely and she did very well with those.

A good first CD from Ms. Duc. I loved her melodies, and hopefully we will hear more from her. mafoster

5 out of 5 stars Seashells on the Coastline.......2005-09-27

I took a lot of time before writing this review in order to let this CD wash over my thoughts. It's a careful tranquil listen....like hearing the ocean in a seashell.... Catherine's approach is multilayered with the subcultures of warm electronica and atmospheric moods, Celtic mysticism (is that real harp? Sounds as good as Maggie Sansone!), and the current trend of worldbeat runs through in waves of delicate melody.

    Beatiful.

I like the oneness of this album...as I ussually break down albums by songs I would rather like to think of this as one long everchanging piece of music. The music walks the path of perfection in that it is not so mundane as to bore you but then it is not so discordant as if to overwhelm you. This is what a real pure mood can create!

At once I felt the peace and mystery of groups like Enigma but here without the irony, just the subtly which is sometimes harder to achieve. Some would liken her to Enya, but there is too much going on here to be Enya who has late become predictable yet enjoyable. I myself would call it close to Paoa NewAge, Jean Michel Jarre and his ode to the noble gases.

But no comparrisons are needed.... if you enjoy good instrumentals to take your mind away from troubles.... pick up this CD of trancable odes and relax your body but let your mind work with the compositions. I was very impressed with the album and will look forward for more good things from Catherine Duc.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful place to come back!.......2005-08-06

I like to find places in music. This album have a lot. My favorite songs after the first listen are 'Evocation', 'One Autumn Day' and 'In The Light of Day'. The instruments are classic and also explorative. This isn't a real instrumental album because Catherine's voice is another instrument. She don't use words and this make her music very international. Everybody can feel at home in 'Visions and Dreams'. You think you are in a movie, in a game or a real place on earth. This is music we need. A beautiful place to come back!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Any Jussi Fan.......2001-03-11

It takes a few weeks to get this CD, but it's well worth the wait to hear the earliest recordings of Bjorling. Many of the cuts are in Swedish and include not only opera but operetta and other lighter fare. Though his voice was glorious at any age, it is wonderful to hear how he sounded at the beginning of his career. One real treat is some 1920 recordings of the childhood Jussi with his his two brothers, Olle and Gosta. In Psalm No. 4, the fine vocal ability of the nine year old Jussi presages what will become one of the most splendid tenor voices in opera history.

        Product Description

There is a new generation of performing artists and composers who in recent years have been redefining the temporal and aesthetic dimensions of music, thus paving the way for a veritable cultural renaissance. Nowhere is this more evident than in the work of James J. Pellerite, one of the world s great virtuosi of the modern orchestral flute and no less a master of the Native American flute, which he now plays almost exclusively. Former solo flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra and a distinguished soloist and teacher for many years, Pellerite in 1995 launched a second career as a Native American flute virtuoso. His company, Zalo/JP-Publications, produces an important catalog featuring a wide selection of orchestral, chamber and solo works by living composers who share his vision of bringing the Northern Plains instrument firmly into the 21st century and to elevate it to the status of a significant new voice on the contemporary concert stage. The present recording is the most recent of his many collaborations with living composers. Should anyone still require proof that the Northern Plains flute is more than a quaintly happy find for tourists browsing gift shops for souvenirs conjuring the color and spirit of the American West, he/she has only to experience the invigorating musical diversity and consummate artistry represented by this remarkable disc.
