4 out of 5 stars Close, but no Cigar.......2006-09-26

I enjoy Grand Funk's music. Several of their songs got a lot of airplay in the early 70s. The group was considered to be in the same genre as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and the group was typically unpopular with critics. This particular collection is one of the better ones available, though it remains less than perfect.

The easiest way to satisfy most Grand Funk fans would be to put all 20 songs that charted to 1976 into one collection. Then we would all be happy. I personally would have been happy with just one or two more songs from the aforementioned 20, particularly "Feelin' Alright." Until the 20 song collection of all charting songs happens, this CD is probably your best best. Of course, if you are missing a favorite song you have one of two choices. Either get the collection that contains your favorite song, or get the album that has that song, which is also a good idea.

Grand Funk was one of the hardest rock groups of their day. Sometimes described as the loudest rock and roll band in the world, Grand Funk was one of a very small number of bands that helped evolve rock into heavy metal. Fans of hard rock and classic rock should have at least one collection from this wonderfully talented group.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Yet Another (pretty good) Grand Funk Compilation.......2006-04-10

If you want a single-disc compilation of Grand Funk Railroad, you basically have four discs to choose from: 1991's Capitol Collector's Series, 2001's Very Best Album Ever, 2002's Classic Masters, and 2006's Greatest Hits (the one you're looking at now). All four of them are actually pretty good, not to mention very similar. Here's some of the goods and bads of Grand Funk's "Greatest Hits."

THE GOOD
- I've always considered Grand Funk Railroad to be the only "heavy" American rock group who could hold a match to Led Zeppelin in the early seventies, and this collection gives you fourteen choice cuts from the band.
- In addition to the big hits like "We're An American Band," "The Loco-Motion," and "I'm Your Captain;" you also get some underrated gems such as "Time Machine," "Footstompin' Music," and their only UK hit, "Inside Looking Out."
- All songs are digitally remastered from the original master tapes, resulting in excellent sound quality.

THE BAD
- Despite the number of great tracks, there are a few songs I would have traded for. I was particulary disappointed at the absence of two great cover songs, Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright" and the Stones' "Gimme Shelter" (the Classic Masters compilation does contain these, but it lacks "Inside Looking Out").

Overall, I would cautiously call this the best Grand Funk collection available. If you're a fan of classic American rock, make sure you own something from this great band, even if it's one of their regular albums or one of their two fantastic live recordings.

I have the original album, purchased when I was a teen, and the comparison is incredibly fresh and crisp, not to mention the addition of the extra live tracks. This was on my Christmas wish list and I'm so thankful for the gift as every track is a treasure. I highly recommend it.

The songs on this album were by far their best! Mark Farner has a
wonderful voice, and the band got their messages across to we the
listeners without obscenities or violence. Grand Funk Railroad
was and always will be a band to be remembered!

5 out of 5 stars GRAND FUNK RAILROAD ROCKS OUT CLOSER TO HOME. .......2007-02-28

I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "CLOSER TO HOME"by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of America's favorite sons. I give you Flint, Michigan's own GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. "CLOSER TO HOME" was originally released in 1970 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Capitol Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

By this time, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was making Rock n' Roll history and was quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the loudest Rock bands in the world considering that the band only consists of three band members. Also by this time, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would soon be compared to another legendary three-man band, the great CREAM. In reality, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD IS TRULY FOR REAL AND KNOW HOW TO PLAY THEIR ROCK N' ROLL. The band was hot and on fire with their popularity growing non-stop. With everything on a very positive note, it would be the perfect time for GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, or should I say, guitarist Mark Farner, drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher to head back into the recording studio and record their new follow-up album. It would also be on this new follow-up album that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would record one of their greatest hits ever and one of the greatest Rock anthems in Rock n' Roll history. The song is "I'm Your Captain. With time already flown by, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would evolve from the studio with a new completed album and hand it in to Capitol Records. The result was the legendary album "CLOSER TO HOME." In my opinion, "CLOSER TO HOME" is a true testament of the creative genius' of three extremely talented individuals and a great tribute to a band that was changing Rock n' Roll forever with a new sound. Without a doubt, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will always be remembered as the band that was truly ahead of their time.

Now its time to review the killer Rock n' Roll on this legendary album. If you want to hear some real Rockers, listen to the songs such as the classic slow Rocker "Sin's A Good Man's Brother," the breathtaking "Aimless Lady," the blistering killer Rocker "Nothing Is The Same," the funkish and soulful "I Don't Have To Sing The Blues," the slow bluesy Rocker "Hooked On Love" and the blistering groundbreaking Rocker "I'm Your Captain."

There are only two slow Rockers on the album and are the songs such as the slow paced turned fast paced Rocker "Mean Mistreater" and the slow/fast Rocker with a good beat "Get It Together." Farner really sets new ground with new riffs and new guitar arrangements and techniques that would forever revolutionize the way the guitar would be played. Brewer would also break new ground as a drummer and would demonstrate how vital perfect timekeeping has to be in order to create the ultimate Rock n' Roll sound. Schacher would also break new ground as a bassist and would demonstrate the importance of getting the perfect sound and beat out of his bass. Combine all three of these elements together and you will have some of the greatest sounding Rock n' Roll ever.

Overall, "CLOSER TO HOME" is one hell of an album that KICKS A*S.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album without a doubt has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever always be "the people's band." In reality, the GRAND FUNK RAILROAD legend does not even come close to ending here despite all the tribulations and tragedies that should have killed the band, buried and laid to rest. But it didn't. But most importantly, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD is the story of survival and perseverence. According to the MTV series BEHIND THE MUSIC, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever always be remembered in Rock n' Roll history for two historic moments. The first, in 1971, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD became the first Rock band to sell out Shea Stadium quicker than THE BEATLES did in 1965 and even drew a larger audience attendance than THE BEATLES did in 1965. Second, also in 1971, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being THE ONLY BAND TO HAVE EVER BLOWN THE MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN OFF THE STAGE. This rare happening took place in Miami, Florida. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was chosen to open for the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. The only thing about this is that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was so hot and on fire that they delivered a blistering set that was so devastating that ZEPPELIN Manager Peter Grant ordered and threatened GRAND FUNK's Manager Terry Knight to get GRAND FUNK RAILROAD off the stage NOW! With the damage already done, LED ZEPPELIN was fearful and even hesitated in following GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. However, LED ZEPPELIN did go on stage and performed but their performance was no where near the blistering performance of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD'S. With all these accomplishments done in such a short period of time, I think it is fair to say that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD has forever left their mark and impact in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten nor denied. With this in mind, there will also be new stories and tales in the GRAND FUNK RAILROAD legend and story that will still need to be conquered, told and written in pages and in new chapter's. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will have to stay tuned and read further about at a later date. So here's to you Mark, Don and Mel. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. GRAND FUNK LIVES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars metallurgy.......2006-10-12

'Closer To Home' is one of the finest heavy rock discs ever produced, plain and simple. While much is made of the title track, the album rocks steady from one end to the other, offering a showcase for the many methods to master (and in this case, remaster) metal music:
METAL GOES STOMPING on the opening track, the incisive 'Sin's a Good Man's Brother' ("but is that right....?"). After lulling the listener with a soft acoustic introduction, the first question you'll be asking is: can three guys really generate this many decibels all by themselves?
METAL GOES JOGGING on track two, 'Aimless Lady', with its heavy, loping strides. The testosterone laced lyrics ("if you can stand a real good man, take my hand and understand me, baby") are supported by fine falsetto backing harmony from drummer Don Brewer.
METAL GETS A FUNK GROOVE on 'Nothing Is the Same', complete with a sweet, fuzzy bridge from singer Mark Farner's lead guitar. The songsmith observes how life has changed from when he was 16, to 18, to "just a little bit older", to "future years" and Nothing Is the Same.
METAL BLEEDS A LITTLE on 'Mean Mistreater', which starts out in slow-blues mode, but quickly builds steam into a blazing bridge before collapsing into the bluesy coda.
METALLIC PSYCHEDELIA emerges on 'Get It Together', which is for the most part an organ-driven instrumental, save the mantra-like coda, "got to get it together", delivered by Farner, Brewer, and several soulful ladies in the background.
METAL GOES STRUTTING on 'I Don't Have To Sing the Blues' which is really two songs, two songs mixed into one. A slick lead guitar riff provides the foundation over fat and fuzzy bass lines from Mel Schacher, supporting wicked lyrics such as, "she's my dinner and my Midnight snack... she sets up and she begs and she even rolls over on her back".
METAL GOES POETIC in the coda, wrapping more great lyrics around the "I don't have to sing the blues no more" chorus.
METAL BENDS AND DISTORTS on 'Hooked On Love', where a heavy bass line propels this song through several incarnations, and featuring a torrid bridge from Farner's wah-pedal guitar.
METAL GOES ANTHEMIC on the title track, my favorite part of which is the rich, fuzzy yet smooth lead guitar bridge... but also the early, all too brief wah-pedal. The liner notes talk extensively about the accidental "Alright, stop it" from producer Terry Knight that appears one minute into the track. Although the author of the liner notes, Steve Roeser, makes it sound like the gaffe is hardly noticable, I've always been aware of it. It seems to fit right in with the "Stop it!, Stop it!" that appears in the 'Hey Jude'-ish finish. But just in case you want to REALLY hear it, check out the hidden track following the bonus tracks where the miscue is isolated and amplified for you!

Bonus tracks are always appreciated, but two more versions of 'Mean Mistreater' (one from a concert in Orlando in June of 1970, which isn't appreciably different from the studio take, and the other IS the studio take, with only slight alterations in the finish), don't add much in the first case, and amount to one too many renditions in the other. However, two other tracks from that night in Orlando will put some flash in your CD laser. The first is a nearly twelve minute excursion on 'In Need' from the bands 1970 self-titled disc, and a seven minute-plus rendition of the classic 'Heartbreaker' from 1969's 'On Time' disc. Add to all this a sparkling remastered sound, period photographs and memorabilia, snazzy graphics, detailed track information, and relevant liner notes, and you have what is known in the business as the complete package. 'Closer To Home' is a milestone in rock history right out of my backyard of Flint, Michigan. The soundtrack of your life is incomplete without it.

4 out of 5 stars Worth It for One Long Song.......2007-06-18

"Inside Looking Out" is one of the best rock and roll songs ever played. I liked it when it first came out (I was 14), and still like it today though my tastes have changed greatly in that span.

5 out of 5 stars From the Vault.......2007-06-09

If you can remember everything you were doing when this album came out in 1969 you didn't go to my HIGH school. "Paranoid" still rings true today, "Jump Into The Fire" jams better than most of what's heard today. Buy it, Buy it Now.

1 out of 5 stars Grand Funk imitate power trios badly.......2007-03-30

I have the original LP. Aa a kid, ia actually "liked" these guys. But after a short time, I found this band to be too overly simplistic to be interesting.

The opening number, "Got this thing on the move" shows Farner's total ineptitude at putting a song together. The song goes from an uptempo to a slow break and Farner's lack of imaginative, improvisational "technique" rears its ugly head in his solos. From here on in, its downhill. What is funky to some is plodding, heavy-handed, and downright dull. Few bands come off less talented than Grand Funk.

4 out of 5 stars A unique brand of rock..........2007-03-09

...from my perspective, that is. I'm sure somebody will jump up and slice me into pieces for saying such blasphemy, since there exists some band out there that I don't know about and had a similar style or something, but this album was way before my time, and I really don't know much about what kind of music played back then, which I'm sure is the case for many who will read this review. Specifically speaking, the cover of The Animals' "Inside Looking Out" is hands-down my favorite song on the album, which in my opinion is the best display of the guitarist's style and best use of the lead singer's voice and style. A real turnoff for me was the extended guitar solo in the song "In Need", with the man yelling in the background. I don't know if there's some story behind that or if the generation of that time was into that stuff, but it just felt dragged out and pointless, kind of like a Jimi Hendrix solo, except without the unbelievable talent of Hendrix that made his solos extraordinary to the very last note. The album as a whole is loud, energetic, but most importantly has a distinctly unique feel, a difficult feat for a rock and roll album like this. Recommended for anyone like myself that likes to dab around in classic rock music as a hobby, not really a must-buy, but definitely not a waste of money for anyone like myself.

5 out of 5 stars THE RED ALBUM SELF-TITLED GRAND FUNK BREAKS NEW GROUND IN ROCK AND CONTINUES TO AMAZE EVERYONE........2007-03-03

I will be writing a review on the legendary self-titled red album entitled "GRAND FUNK" by one of Rock's greatest band's and one of America's favorite sons. I give you one of Flint, Michigan's pride and joy's, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. "GRAND FUNK" was originally released in 1970 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the infamous Capitol Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD continues to amaze me as well as millions of others to this very day. As we are all aware, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD has had its shares of bad tribulations and hardships throughout their incredible career. Despite making changes in personnel through the years, it will always be the true original mega star line-up comprising of guitarist Mark Farner, drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD broke new grounds in Rock n' Roll and dared to pushed the limits of their musical creativity to another level, then more, then further and beyond. When GRAND FUNK RAILROAD evolved from the recording studio and handed in to Capitol Records this album, they felt confident that their self-titled red album was really going to blow people's minds as well as surprise the whole music industry. In my opinion, "GRAND FUNK," the red album is an action pacted non-stop hard Rock album that truly kicks a*s. "GRAND FUNK" is also a true testament of the three masterminds that created the ultimate sound and a fine tribute to one of the all-time greatest three-man bands in Rock n' Roll history that was truly ahead of its time.

Now its the music's turn to do all the talking. If you want to Rock, listen to the Rockers such as the fast paced a*s kicking "Got This Thing On The Move," the blistering Rocker "Please Don't Worry," the amazing breathtaking Rocker "High Falootin' Woman," the groundbreaking slow Rocker "Mr. Limousine Driver," the merciless fast paced Rocker "In Deed," the much slower but still Rockin' "Winter And My Soul," the scary and devastating a*s kickin' Rocker "Paranoid" and the mad wild energetic "Inside Looking Out." On this album, Farner pushes the limits of his guitar playing and just keeps getting better. Brewer keeps his timing perfect while thrashing away on his drums with such skill and power that he gives the music a life of its own with a beat and energy that never lets up. Schacher is just the perfect icing on the cake to complete the ultimate sound that only these three can make together.

Overall, "GRAND FUNK" is definitely worth seeking and checking out especially for those who are curious what the fuss was all about with GRAND FUNK RAILROAD.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary groundbreaking album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever be remembered for contributing a new sound for Rock n' Roll and for daring to push the limits and boundaries further and beyond as far as setting new ground of how much a three-man band is really capable of recording and performing. But most importantly, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD played proudly together with a lot of heart and emotion which in turn gave the music a unique sound filled with raw energy and soul that never lets up. Then again, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD is the people's band that represented the hard times in America through their music at the right time when it was needed. With this in mind, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD left their mark in Rock n' Roll history on their terms and wouldn't have it any other way.

5 out of 5 stars Love Railroad Earth.......2006-09-10

I haven't had a chance to listen to Elko lately because my husband's constantly making me more cds of RRE that he downloads, but it is a masterpiece that I have listened to a lot. When my husband started catching on to this band I thought yeah, yeah, yeah, as the other live bands we've seen over the years like Phil & Friends, Ratdog etc. and others just ultimately don't cut it for me and make me nostalgic for the past. I'd pretty much written all that off and I mostly listen to World and Middle Eastern music now. So for fear of dispointment I didn't pay a lot of attention (and at first didn't like Todd's voice) but was totally willing to see them live and really check them out, as I HAD noticed the high calibre musicianship. So we went to see them and from the start I was riveted, not just by how they're all masters of the instruments they play, how layered and full their music is, how the energy level is consistent and up throughout the whole show, how beautiful and original the melodies are, poignantly Todd sings, that I was dancing my butt off (most important) but by how moved I felt. This is heart music. It is just so refereshing and uplifting to hear new, well-crafted tunes with genuine lyrics, played flawlessly on real instuments, even deeply felt love songs without a trace of prettiness, not to mention the variety and quantity of songs. It isn't easy to do what this band does, and I so appreciate that they do. It's great to have a new band to love and look forward to seeing again and again.
Thank you!!

4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Jam Delight.......2006-03-23

The references to the "jam" scene in other reviews are relevant upon listening to this live set. "Elko" has a place in my repeat listening pile. There are new musical impressions and discoveries after each listen and it continues to grow on me. The freshness and originality of the arrangements are welcome in the bluegrass scene as well as the jam scene. The only flaw is in the production quality which has a bit of a "taper" sound to it but I am sure this endears this set to jam lovers.

5 out of 5 stars what the hELKO!!!.......2006-03-21

I've heard of railroad earth for quite some time, but never made the leap of purchasing any of their cd's. As a fan of all traditional bluegrass, and jam music, i was well aware of the hype with this new cd. I just bought the album and can't get enough, this cd rocks from start to finnish. Can't wait to see them in Boston this april. if you like music buy this album.
PIECE!

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Goodness.......2006-03-09

I found this album smooth and solid, spanning from bluegrass to rock, with a great jam on the "Head" track.

Excellent. Hard to find a version like this. Arrived timely and in good shape.

5 out of 5 stars Good Classic Rock!.......2006-02-16

I really enjoyed the classic rock sound the grand funk railroad presented in its day. They could be compared in its era to Led Zeppelin. Some Kind Of Wonderful ranked among the group's biggest hits including We're An American Band. I didnt like the covers of the rolling stones Gimmie Shelter, or their cover of Feelin' Alright. But besides the poor cover songs their original material had a bigger impact on the group and the era. This is not my favorite classic rock band but its def. one of the better bands of the classic rock era. This deserves 4 stars because of the poor covers, other than that this deserves 5!

3 out of 5 stars G.F.R. Sell Out.......2005-12-20

Grand Funk (Railroad) has to be the ultimate example of a one time great rock band that sold out to commercialism and pop ditties in the hopes of having continued success. To go from such classics as "Heartbreaker, Mean Mistreater" and Footstompin' Music" to such pop tripe as "The Locomotion, Some Kind of Wonderful and Bad Time" is a shame. The former three songs would get a five star rating but unfortunately the bubble gum that came out after "We're An American Band" cancels that out. Bands change with the times but if they don't keep a part of the formula that made them great then they fade from sight as this once terrific band did. Adding Craig Frost as the fourth man on keyboards was a positive for a time but even that got old fast. A pity.

5 out of 5 stars A great overview of GFR.......2005-06-28

I love this compilation, it has all of the great songs by GFR and the sound is excellent. If you get a one-disc GFR compilation, it should be this one. GFR was an important part of the hard rock development and they were good at what they did. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves good rock.

5 out of 5 stars They rocked North Tonawanda.......2004-07-14

I saw them play in north tonawanda, ny and they rocked. They played all their hits, and all thier hits are represented on this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not great.......2007-03-16

I thought this was a pretty good package. It was missing a few songs on that I thought should have been on the c.d., but nothing too crucial. The DVD was good, but I wish there was better out there. A full length DVD of the Shea stadium concert would be great!

5 out of 5 stars At Last !!!! .......2007-03-06

I first heard GFR at the age of 15 and have waited 31 years to see them "in the flesh". The sheer power and drive is unique to Grand Funk. Amazing drumming by Don and the bass work is so tight. The sound is brilliant even on the older footage. Please can we now get the full concerts?

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop watching the DVD.......2007-01-05

I've been a Grand Funk Railroad fan since I was 14 (not 50) and never saw them perform - just listened to their albums. Mark Farner's performance of "Inside Looking Out" is outstanding as well as Don Brewer and Mel Schacher. Of course I love the CD - all the songs I loved and still love.

5 out of 5 stars GFR rocks on!!!.......2006-12-09

Compared to an old cassette of "The Best of Grand Funk Railroad," the sound of the digitally re-mastered recordings are no comparison. They are smokin'!!! The added bonus of the DVD just enhances enjoyment of some good old-time rock-n-roll!

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE CHECK THIS BAND OUT.......2005-09-02

I happened to hear of these guys by chance, word of mouth, and I cant be more thankful. RRE music is timeless. I'm a true rock n roller, I dont know how to describe this band..I never cared for blue grass or Grateful Dead, but these guys have an original quality to them thats special. The music is timeless, meaningful lyrics, great musicianship, and most importantly HOOKS & MELODIES. Songs that stick with you. I highly recommend this band to everyone that I'm in contact with. I'm very picky when it comes to music, Im a musician and I dont like alot of whats going on out there in the music world. This band is a breath of fresh air and makes us realize that theres still a few talented people in the world that play some great music. Theres not many. Buy and listen to RRE, they deserve it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Band You Have Never Heard.......2005-03-22

Ok, maybe you have heard of them and that's why you are here reading this, but if you are new to RailRoad Earth you have just found something that will inspire you like nothing before. This group of extremely talented musicians has grabbed everything that was good about root and bluegrass and combined it with the new musical influences from the past few decades. RRE is a timeless band that is a treat to listen to. They create music that could be the score for a movie about your life. If you are a hardcore Bluegrass fan this CD will delight you. If you are new to the genre then these guys are a perfect introduction into the great root sound that is growing in North America.

5 out of 5 stars Just a hair less exciting than the Black Bear Sessions.......2002-11-02

What can one say about this CD. This band has the magic - the ability to pull so many varying aspects of music together that it should please everyone at the same time. I count it mainly towards Todd Sheaffer's incredible songwriting and his incredibly smooth voice. For example, Peace on Earth is a good song on this album, but he does not sing it and it shows. It is just not the same. Who else could come up with such an enchanting diddy - a song so simple yet so sweet like "Came Up Smilin'". I can listen to that song all day and smile from ear to ear each time.
I saw these guys yesterday and it was a riot to see Todd dressed as a cow with everyone wanting to pull on his utter! It was Halloween of course. The point is that they are better live and that is why I'll say the first album is just a fraction better for me. I agree with the above comment about this perhaps being rushed a hair and overproduced in a few small spots, but this nitpicking overall. This cd should be in every persons collection who has made so far as to be reading this review. This band will reach at least cult status if they never hit the mainstream. of course, I like having room to move when I see them live, so I could care less if they sell out MSG someday or not.

5 out of 5 stars pure smokin' honey heat moonshine harmonies!.......2002-10-17

I was turned on to these guys at Telluride, where they absolutely turned it out in the Fly Me to The Moon Saloon one post-festival evening. I've seen them again since in San Francisco and they seemed to have gotten twice as nice! This band is really cruising right now -- churning out beautiful new material, blowing up show after show. I can agree with the other reviewers in that they are not easily classified into any single genre of music: rock, bluegrass, folk, whatever. Instead, they offer something that has such amazing range that it can touch many different styles and sounds at once -- watch how easily they segue into a New Orleans brass sound at the end of "Came Up Smilin." Bluegrass may or may not continue to attract mainstream attention but Railroad Earth will succeed either way because they offer something so incredibly unique and wonderful.
Prepare yourself for the unstoppable urge to leap around your living room until you crash through the coffee table . . .

also, check out the Black Bear Sessions and Shaeffer's Solo Work.
Godspeed!

5 out of 5 stars A Promising Debut.......2007-04-03

Finally found this one (actually had to special-order it) and I am really impressed. It took me quite awhile to get into these guys but I am certainly glad I did. While some slag this album as amateurish (and they may be right but I don't care), I found this to be a great, albeit basic, hard rock stomper. I really enjoy this album from beginning to end as I do with it's immediate follow-ups. I am very impressed by the heaviness and the blues-influences that are very evident. Great debut by an under-rated band. Plus, they're from Michigan just as I am. If you are looking to purchase this album, buy the 2002 remaster which contains remastered sound and great liners.

1 out of 5 stars A popular but inept imitation of Cream.......2007-03-30

I have the original vinyl recording. Basically, this band rode the hype created by power trios such as Cream and Hendrix. As opposed to those two bands, this band plods along from the opening set to the dull, boring, leaden last cut with its clunky exchange between Mark Farner and Mel Schacher, to the lifeless backbeat by Brewer. Mark Farner's playing is easily imitable by dozens oflocal garage bands, he seems to revel in cutting virtually every solo from the E-minor chord. Best player is Don Brewer, the drummer, but his pyrotechnic drumming is no complement to the soulless noise one suffers through on this record.

If you must get this reissue CD, be forewarned- unless you really like these obnoxious louts.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic for my collection.......2007-02-06

Grand Funk was everything about Rock n' Roll. Fantastic find at a great price.

4 out of 5 stars A good and solid first effort.......2004-10-26

GFR's first release goes to show you that sometimes music critics don't know jack about music! This is a good debut filled with power and passion that many other rock bands could only dream of doing after even ten albums! Anyway rock was never supposed to be pretty and clean but raw and dirty and GFR delivers with On Time. So go back to a time when rock was revolutionary and artist still had passion for their music and get this CD before your rock n' roll tastes are contaminated from the crap that is coming out today. Play it loud baby!

5 out of 5 stars The most unfairly criticised album in rock history!.......2004-08-08

Let's be honest--is it ever fair to pan anyone's first album? Believe me, I've heard much worse debut albums than this one. Most bands are just trying to find their "sound" on their first album. I believe GFR discovered their sound from their very first rehearsals.
If there is anything to be criticised here, its only on the production side of things. When Rolling Stone magazine gave their first official scathing review of GFR's music, probably the only thing they got right was, "the drumming guaranteed to send you up the wall!" But that's only because on a lot of the songs here, the loudest thing you CAN hear is Don Brewer's drums. I read where Mark Farner complained that his guitar didn't come out loud enough on this album--which, when he switched on the fuzztone, as he did on "Anybody's Answer", "Can't Be Too Long" and toward the end of "Heartbreaker", could have easily rivaled that of Tony Iommi and Leslie West in terms of loudness, had only production levels been more in the "red". And Mel Schacher, the loudest bass player in the world--where was he? His bass can barely be heard on this album, as if it had hardly been plugged in at all! At any rate, manager/producer Terry Knight and engineer Ken Hamann turned things around sharply for the better on the next album, putting the guitar and bass out front, and the drums in it's rightful, lowly place in the back of the mix, and then putting all the levels in the "red"--hence, the "red" album.
But forget about production for a minute--how about the music. Let's take this one at a time. Rolling Stone called this album, "one-dimensional". Hardly! I've heard one-dimensional albums, and this is certainly not one. However, that's not to say that all "one-dimensional" albums are bad--Boston's debut is "one-dimensional". Being "one-dimesnional", or saying all the songs sound the same, just means you have your own "sound". GFR had its own sound, but injected it's sound into different kinds of music, such as the jazzy-"T.N.U.C.", the bluesy-"Time Machine", and the proto-power ballad, "Heartbreaker". GFR, much like Led Zeppelin, was very good at musical arrangements, timing, and tempo changes for such a young group, and knowing when to go from light-to heavy-and back to light, such as on "Anybody's Answer" and "Can't Be Too Long"--much as Led Zeppelin on a song like "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You".
"Unmusical" is another word for this album that Rolling Stone Mag used to describe. "Unmusical" is what a lot of the music is today, like Pantera and Metallica. Describing this album as "unmusical" is not even listening to this album, and denying everything I just said about it. If this was considered "heavy metal" for its time, its a whole lot more melodic, muscial, and listenable than what is called "heavy metal" today. It's only when Mark Farner slices through "Anybody's Answer", "Can't Be Too Long", and "Heartbreaker" with his chainsaw-sounding fuzz guitar that the band even reaches what I consider, "metallic proportions".
On the vocal harmony end of things, this is probably their best album in terms of overdubbing Mark and Don's voices to sound almost ethereal and frightening! If you like Vanilla Fudge or Uriah Heep for the vocal harmonies, you might like some of what you hear on this album. Overdubbing Mark's lead and rhythm guitars also comes out sounding great, and even adds a little drama, to songs like "T.N.U.C", "Into The Sun", and "Can't Be Too Long". And if there was anything that was most certainly not one-dimensional here, it was Mark Farner's guitar playing. Remember, this was a guy who had only learned to play "solos" a year before, and he only got even better with time. But I think his guitar playing, his phrasing and soloing, was spectacular all through this album--too bad production couldn't make it come out louder! But just because he wasn't quite on the level of a Jimmy Page or a Jimi Hendrix didn't make him a bad guitar player, or "one-dimensional", for that matter. He forged his own style, playing almost-Page style leads, and almost-Hendrix style rhythms.
Another high mark GFR gets for this album is originality. For a debut album to have ALL original music, and no covers, is quite an accomplishment, in and of, itself, and something I respect very highly. Mark wrote his own stuff for the group, and continued to do so for two more albums. The only other thing they did was re-arrange old songs from their previous group, The Pack, and make new songs out of them, much like Jimmy Page re-arranged old-Yardbird songs and riffs for Led Zeppelin. However, I still would have liked to hear a guitar-driven, GFR version of an old soul number, like "Land of 1,000 Dances", or "In the Midnight Hour", as I know they performed live on tour back in '69--It's only too bad Capitol records couldn't find a bootleg recording somewhere of them performing those two songs, when they re-mastered this disc to add bonus tracks. I think hearing them play, "Land of 1,000 Dances", would sound as unique as hearing Led Zeppelin play the old Motown-number, "We're Gonna Groove", and would have made this disc much more worthwhile, than adding an alternate-version of "Heartbreaker" with a tamborine! (By the way, who was playing that tamborine, anyway--Terry Knight?)
So contrary to what Rolling Stone mag said about this album back in '69, I consider this album very musical, multi-dimensional, and very listenable. But the drumming does send you up the wall, and that's only because production wasn't as balanced as it could have been. The album cover could have been a little-less cheesy--Grand Funk Railroad playing with "model trains"! In a way, it does sort of model itself after Cream's first album cover--with the black backdrop, and three guys in theme-oriented costumes. Production does get high marks for knowing when to use the speaker-to-speaker effects and the overdubbing--it's how Blue Cheer and The Stooges albums should have been done! But the balance of the bass-drums-guitar was severely out-of-whack, and as I said earlier, would be very much corrected for the next album--some might say, "over"-corrected. But that's just "Mr. Type-A" personality, Terry Knight, going from one extreme to the other. Overall, a great album, musically--probably one of the best of the 1960s, right at the end of the decade, but a "not-so-good" Knight production.

4 out of 5 stars True Survival.......2007-07-11

I'm 48, the last time I owned this album was about 30 years ago. If you can put yourself at a place in time where technology wasn't the same you can listen to the sounds of creativity of this trio that desperately pushed the envelope of their instruments to redefine rock-n-roll. The night I received my CD on the mail I took the trip memory lane, and yes there they were waiting for me... Grand Funk Survival can still make me feel the things that I felt then, think the thoughts that I thought then, and remind me that if you want to keep a "hand picked" collection of rock through the ages, Survival is a must.

3 out of 5 stars damn near album.......2007-06-09

almost as good as i remembered.they were always good back in the day but this is one of those c.ds that just leaves you looking for a peak in their music that never comes.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Effort from an American band.......2006-03-14

There is a lot of different types of music on this album from Americas " Power Trio " of rock. It'all good. One hint of greatness from these guys is how Mel uses his bass as a rythm guitar to fill the gaps in " Gimme Shelter " which I prefer over the Stones version. They do make that song alone in itself sound great / better. This one is another of my ' audio arsenal ' and it should be yours too, especially if you are a GFR fan ( the American Band ). Good listening to you.

5 out of 5 stars Loved my Order.......2005-10-14

I would never hesitate to order again. I was very pleased in the shipping time and the quality of my order. Thanks a million.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic GFR Record!.......2005-08-22

I was probably 12 years old when this LP was originally released. I loved it then, and now with extra tracks, I love it even more. This LP was a slight departure from the "in your face" approach of thier previous recordings. They played this one a bit more thoughtful and melodic, especially side two (on the lp). Songs like "I want Freedom" and "I Can Feel Him In The Morning" give the LP and almost surreal feeling. Of course thier cover of The Rolling Stones "Gimmie Shelter" finishes off the original lp with a bang. But here we have bonus material to give you a different hindsight on that period in the band's development. All in all, I have to say this is one of my favorite GFR albums. So why only 4 stars? Because even as a kid back in the 1970's I felt that "All You Got Is Money" was a horrible song. It should have never made the LP. I can see where Mark Farner might have been concerned with greed at the time, The band was becoming more sucessful with each new release. But where money grubbing hangers-on might have been a concern of Mark Farner at the time, it was not much of a reality for the fans. Think about it...GFR was a "Peoples" band. Mark Farner was a spokesperson for a new generation of young people who were mostly opposed to the mindless slaughter going on in Vietnam, and the abuse of federal and local political power of the estabilshment of the late 60's and early 70's. I don't see how he could think his fans would relate to a song about people who prey on the "well to do". Most of us were far from rich, and had no concept of the notion. The song had no realtion to the generation, or the culture of the fans he was addressing at the time. I admit, he might have had a different concept in mind, but it did not come across well, and did not fit well with the feel of the rest of the LP. It's the only bad song on the record, and IMO, it should have been left off and something else should have been used in it's place. It just does not fit.Otherwise, I have fond memories of this record. I'm glad Capitol finally got around to giving it a shot on CD. And with the bonus tracks, it's even better.

5 out of 5 stars Clearer then clear, purer than pure.......2007-06-17

Having seen Grand Funk 5 times from 70-75 this was the album that hooked me on them from the beginning. First having the vinyl, cassette, the first CD and now the remastered, the remastered is sooooooooo great. It captures the purtity of these fellas in their prime and trying to climb. By far a much better band live, this was one of the best live bands of the era. Thank you for the purity. This was grand funk before closer to home and the reach out to the air play. I saw the 71-72 concert, which now has a live cd out, and was deaf for 3 days but of course the songs on this performance are burned into my mind for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars live Grand Funk is fantastic.......2007-05-25

After searching for this album in my record collection for a good 20 minutes and not having any luck finding it, I realized that all this time it was actually sitting under a bunch of Beatles albums beside the stereo, haha!

I LOVE this album. More specifically, I love the raw energy, frantic guitar work, and just the atmosphere of the early 70's rock scene. I'm only 25 years old, so I wasn't around back when this album was recorded, but the music here certainly convinces me that rock and roll back then was truly phenomenal. Now it's hard listening to studio Grand Funk albums after playing this double live album (on one CD- hooray!)

I don't get how Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple have a reputation for being the heaviest bands around back then, when this album (along with the James Gang's Live in Concert) are solid proof that there were certainly other bands in the early 70's who could rock JUST as hard. People aren't listening to old live albums anymore!

The tracks on this album are the best you could ask for because there's no softer numbers like "Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain" and no commercial stuff "We're an American Band". Instead, it's all about fairly long guitar jams that are many times *extremely* loud.

You know, I was a troublemaker as a child who went around destroying my parents record collection, but thank GOD I didn't mess up this one! A masterpiece for Grand Funk Railroad.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT re-master job of a classic album.......2007-03-01

WOW!
If you grew up in the early-to-mid 70's,you know about GFR already. If you haven't, what a shame. GFR were total anti-stablishment artist's---the press hated these guys and their approach to live shows were like the early punk attitude. Plug in and go,loud and bare bones! AND...that's the point of this CD...these songs weren't subtle, but they hit all the right notes with a whole generation of listeners.
This re-master job is an old hippy's dream come true. Mark Farner was my original guitar hero, and this album taught me the value of TIGHT bass and drum section's behind the lead guy. The re-mastered version just upped the experience one notch higher.
Buy this CD, it is worth the price, times two.

5 out of 5 stars Gone, but never forgotten.......2007-02-24

It's 1972, and I can remember hearing this album being played in my older sister's room through paper-thin walls...over and over and over and over....

I saw my very 1st concert back in 1973.. yep..it was GFR. To this day, no band has hit me like that. I still remember a few years later, I was listening to the DB drum solo, and it dawned on me.. he was imitating TRAINS...duh.

I had put off buying a copy of the 'album' on CD, because I have a boatload of 'low-level' nondescript 1970 CD's. Yes, with CD's there are no more cracks and pops, but if the music is digital .. it should sound digitally great, or else throw the pops back in. I was extremely surprised how well this CD came out. Not only because it is GFR, I gave this CD 5 stars because of how well they handled the reproduction of an analog recording from the early 70's. I would recommend this to any GFR fan .. especially those who owned the original album.

5 out of 5 stars If only I could...........2007-01-29

...travel back in time to this concert and be there on the front row rockin' with donny, mel and marky!

My first album, my favorite album...at least until "Caught in the Act" came out :}

donny and mel make rythym!

marky is marky!
