Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More than just an anthology.......2002-12-17

There are many of us out there who constantly search for validation as a player of the Bodhran. Buy this CD and take heart when flute or fiddle players send darts your way when you ask to sit in on a session. Besides providing some great listening, the many styles featured on the tracks make for a star-studded showcase of both the subtleties (Jimmy Higgins) and the power (Cathy Jordan of Dervish) of the instrument that provides the "heartbeat of Irish Music. " A must buy!

2 out of 5 stars pure bodhran.......2002-09-10

I am a bodhran player and I ordered this title much to my disappointment. Although there are a few innovative pieces,on the whole it doesn't do much for the bodrahn's rep. I swear there is also a cut from the earliest recording in America of Irish music. This is not pure anything, just the same old hat with a few new feathers and electronic doodads.
Celtic music is not Jazz and although it may feature one instrument as the lead voice the instumental support of the others gives it the cohesion that originated as the Ceili sound.
Not a concert but a conversation. For those of us always wanting to improve, my greatest wish would be a recording that sounded like you were sitting next to the drummer at a session. Any brilliant music producers out there?

4 out of 5 stars bodhran for the beginner.......2001-09-17

Anyone who doesn't appreciate 'fiddle-de-dee' music should stop reading now. This double cd contains a selection of jigs reels and polkas all with a variety of playing techniques, but to really get the bodhran sound you'll have to wind up the bass. As an aspiring learner, these techniques are pretty daunting and really give something to aim for. Each cd seems a bit short though. Maybe its just the time flying by.

Just listen to 'Pure Bodhran-The Definitive collection', a brand new double CD anthology, compiled by well known exponent Robbie Harris. It presents 19 leading Bodhran exponents showing that in the right pair of hands, this this humble goatskin becomes a true musical instrument. Pure Bodhran brings together a virtual who's who of top traditional musicians, with many tasty tracks. What began as a celebration of the Bodhran has actually evolved into one of the finest traditional music collections currently available.

5 out of 5 stars pure bodhran pure magic.......2001-02-11

Its about time that the engine of irish music was taken from out of the bonnet of the car for all to hear, and what a sweet sound it makes. From the john reynolds model t ford right up to mr harris's ferrari what a treat.

I am well impressed with the huge range of sounds acheived with the bodhran, from the gentle melodic whisper to driving along many of these tracks.

its a good job the ranch is many miles from the neighbour as I like to play it full on. long live the bodhran
