good reissue.......2003-09-17
GIRL CRAZY was one of the top Broadway shows of the 1930s, with a delightful score by George and Ira Gershwin. The original Broadway production is also noteworthy in that it launched the career of a young Broadway belter by the name of Ethel Merman...
This 1951 studio cast album of the immortal GIRL CRAZY score was produced by Goddard Lieberson, with a cast headed by Mary Martin (still riding high on her SOUTH PACIFIC success). She's joined by a lovely supporting cast which includes Louise Carlyle and Eddie Chappell.
The orchestra, under the faultless direction of maestro Lehman Engel, is fabulous. You'll be hitting the repeat button for the thrilling Overture (the GIRL CRAZY Overture is considered one of the greatest ever written).
Mary Martin croons and coos her way through the slinky "Bidin' My Time", and belts "I Got Rhythm" all the way to the back-row. Louise Carlyle is a perfect comic soubrette singing "Sam and Delilah", while her duet with Eddie Chappell in "Could You Use Me?" is a joy.
Fans of Mary Martin and the brassy score of GIRL CRAZY will adore this cast album!
Great CD.......2002-11-27
I think this version of Girl Crazy is suitable for any Gershwin buffs who wish to enjoy this musical at an affordable price.I shall review each musical numbers.
a)The overture is played with much zest and energy.Watch out for the saxophone solo playing a fragment of 'Bidin' My Time'before the orchestra beaks out into a rousing fragment of 'I Got Rhythm'
b)'The Lonesome Cowboy is a good display of male chauvinism in music style (slight exaggeretion!).The music is played in a march like tempo.
c)Bidin' My Time is sung by Mary Martin as if she is really biding her time!;slow and in a relaxed tempo.
d)Could you use me is a witty duet
e)Bronco Busters and Barbary Coast are 2 superb choral numbers, particularly the latter, which qualifies as a show stopper number
f)Embraceable You is a piece of lyrical tongue twisting number delivered by M.Martin in a wistful manner.
g)Sam and Delilah is sung by Louise Carlye in a brash, rough manner with a discordant music accompaniment with crashing cymbals.Perfect
h)I Got Rhythm is sung in a show stopping manner by M.Martin which is enough to make you wanna dance dance dance.
i)But not for me is performed in a rather melancholy manner by M.Martin.Perfect for the lyrics.
j)Treat me rough was another delightful piece in cowboy melancholy talk style
k)Boy what love has done to me.A song of reggreted love in a delicate style, not exactly woeful
l)Cactus time in Arizona.A beautiful piece in a brilliant energetic style.
m)The finale is a medley of songs beautifully stitched into a single song.
This CD fails to include 3 numbers :Land Of The Gay Caballero,Mexican Dance (instrumental) and Goldfarb! That's I'm
Boy! What time has done to this record!.......2002-03-06
When this album was first released in 1951, it was warmly welcomed since it was the first time most of the GIRL CRAZY score had been recorded. Even Ethel Merman did not get to record her famous hit "I Got Rhythm" until 1947, some 17 years after she introduceded it!
Even when it was new this record was a mixed blessing. Mary Martin was showcased as the "star" and naturally she gets to sing many of the show's hits...even when they do not belong to the same character. So, Mary Martin croons "Bidin' My Time" (in the original production it is lazily sung by 4 cowboys); She takes all of "Embraceable You" (originally a duet for the leading lady and the leading man); and "I Go Rhythm" (originally sung by the secondary character, Kate.) The score was also re-orchestrated for this album, so the sound is more 50's musical theatre than 30's musical comedy. Still, in spite of a total lack of theatricality, the album filled an important gap in Broadway show collections, and Columbia reissued it in 1957, 1965 and 1973...the latter issue staying in print right through the end of the vinyl era.
The 1990 recording on Nonesuch was performed by a full cast with the original orchstrations and is musically complete. If you want to hear GIRL CRAZY with any sense of what teh show sounded like in 1930, the Nonesch album is the one to get.
Sony decided to reissue this version of GIRL CRAZY for the Gershwin centenary in 1998 and listening to it now it seems ...well...out-of-date. The early 50's mono sound makes the orchestra sound tinny. Mary Martin sings wonderfully although her style is not exactly what this brasy score calls for. So, yes, the album is historcally important. But no longer essential.
BLOOPER?: In the song "Broncho Busters" the line should be sung as: "We're Bronco Busters// We Bust the Broncos//We Fear No Man Nor Beast." On this recording the chorus adds an extra word which throws the timing off: "We ARE Broncho Busters //We Bust The //Brochos //We Fear No Man Nor Beast." List for it starting at 1:22 into Track #5.

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Sensational Vocal Album by Carole Farley and William Bolcom.......2007-02-13
Carole Farley and William Bolcom have recorded this landmark CD, and I can easily understand why this CD received a GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Vocal Recording of the Year" and a 2nd GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Engineered Recording of the Year" category. It's indeed one of the best vocal albums of contemporary songs ever made. Carole Farley, who made her MET debut in the MET's first LULU production, seems to be just at home with Puccini, Poulenc, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and even Latin American popular songs (her Lecuona songs album is extremely beautiful).
William Bolcom's accompaniment is brilliant, and the songs are a revelation.

Great Songs, but Mind the Singer.......2006-07-04
This is one of those discs where the listener has to balance the advantages of the program with the disadvantages of the performance. Bolcom is one of this country's most versatile and brilliant composers, and those qualities are demonstrated to great effect in the songs on this album. His piano playing is, as one would expect, also solid and expressive. The drawback here is Carole Farley. Although her diction and intonation are good, as far as tone-color goes, she seems to be a one-trick pony; and if you don't like that trick (opera singer trying to sound like what she thinks a musical theater singer sounds like), listening to her can get very tiring. So while I highly recommend the disc for its content, I suggest listening to excerpts first before buying just to make sure that the singer's voice doesn't drive you batty.
The Songs of William Bolcom.......2006-02-14
The American composer William Bolcom (b. 1938) is best-known for his large-scale setting of William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience," which is available on a 3-CD Naxos set. This new collection of Bolcom's songs also on Naxos shows the composers's lifelong fascination with Blake. It includes an early lyrical setting of Blake's poem, "Mary" which deals with a beautiful and intelligent young woman and her rejection by her society. In the several torch and cabaret-style works it includes, the collection also shows Bolcom's attempts to fuse classical with popular styles of music. Bolcom also has done so in his piano music, much of which is heavily influenced by ragtime.
The songs on this CD are performed and selected by soprano Carole Farley with Bolcom himself at the piano. Ms. Farley has also recorded for Naxos' "American classics" series a selection of the songs of Ned Rorem with Rorem at the piano. Ms. Farley and Naxos are doing listeners a service by introducing them to the world of the American art song.
The highlight of this CD is the 20-minute song-cycle "I will breathe a mountain" in which Bolcom sets 11 poems by American women. The poems were selected by Alice Fulton, and they include Fulton's own "I will swing those obligatos around" in which the young singer describes a come-on from a boor. The song writing is declamatory in character with many twists, turns, and shouts in the vocal line. Only the setting of H.D.'s "Never More Will the Wind" is lyrical and flowing. Besides Fulton and H.D. the settings include poems by Millay, Gwendolwn Brooks (a poem called "The Crazy Woman" with appropriately wild shrieks) Anne Sexton, Denise Levertov, Marianne Moore (listen to what Ms. Farley makes of the poets wish to be a DRA' GON), Emily Dickinson (in a moving poem of the stillness of a home after death),Louise Bogan, May Swenson, and Elizabeth Bishop. "I will breathe a mountain" is an outstanding and moving contemporary American song-cycle and is in itself sufficient reason for hearing this recording.
The CD also includes a second exquisite cycle, "Songs to Dance" which sets ten miniature poems by George Montgomery. This is a work to be danced as well as sung, and it has apparently been performed live only once, by the composer, his wife, the soprano Joan Morris, and dancer, Dan Wagoner. It has never been recorded before. The work deserves to be heard and seen.
Many of the remaining works on this CD are cabaret-style theatrical pieces that Bolcom composed in collaboration with lyricist Arnold Weinstein. The best of these are two torch songs from a show called "Casino Paradise": Night Make my Day (a parody of the torch style which is sometimes performed straight) and "My Father the Gangster", in which a young woman laments how men are, understandably, worried about her father and afraid to approach her. The collection opens with a scream by Ms. Farley in the erotic novelty "You cannot have me now", about the affairs of the wife of a German officer, sung with a heavily inflected German accent and also set to words by Weinstein.
I enjoyed Bolcom's short setting of May Swenson's poem "The Digital Wonder Watch" with the tick-ticking in the piano. This song is a satire of technology, with the poet describing the features of her "wonderful watch" while asking: "Does it show how to wind up/a broken heart?" The other songs on the CD include the passionate "The Last Days of Mankind", conceived for rock singer Marianne Faithful, two eloquent settings of poems by Richard Tillinghast, and four concluding early collaborations between Bolcom and Weinstein.
This CD offers an opportunity to explore the world of American song in the works of a leading contemporary composer. The cycle, "I will breathe a mountain" will be a lasting achievement in American art song.

Impeccable taste.......2006-02-17
Mary Carewe is a Britisher with impeccable taste in lyrics and a delightful and fascinating voice. This is high-toned cabaret or, as she dubs her intimate program, "serious cabaret". If you like Ute Lemper or Bolcom and Morris, you'll enjoy Mary Çarewe. This is her only solo CD to date, but I can't help but believe that more are in the works for this talented soprano. Her big vocal range is matched by her big voice, which regularly accompanies symphonic orchestras in the UK and Europe in programs of modern music and pop, i.e., would you believe a program of James Bond film title songs with the Hallé orchestra?

RED HOT + COUNTRY, in addition to supporting AIDS research, will fund a special education project which will target rural communities throughout the nation.
"Teach Your Children" was nominated for Best Country Vocal Collaboration, and "Keep On The Sunny Side" was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
RED HOT + COUNTRY is the fourth album in the very successful RED HOT series of genre-specific recordings benefiting AIDS Awareness. This time it's country music's turn, and under the guidance of Kathy Mattea, numerous contemporary Nashville superstars chose a song or a style representing an influence on their own artistry. For the most part they chose songs of hope and healing.
From the opening "Teach Your Children" featuring Mattea, Suzy Bogguss, Alison Krauss, and Crosby Stills & Nash to the closing Carter Family tune, "Keep On The Sunnyside," featuring bluegrass greats Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, the entire album offers a ray of light in these fearful times.

Customer Reviews:
Mediocre Cabaret Singer with Outstanding Combo.......2005-03-16
This singer's shrill voice and overdramatic renditions of such wonderful songs hardly seems fitting for a combo as talented as Bill Mays, Frank Vignola, Jon Burr and Joe Ascione. Conklin's voice is like a wet blanket on the instrumental performances and arrangements. I simply cannot understand how any organization would ever name her Jazz Vocalist of the year. If cabaret is your thing you might really love Mary Foster Conklin, but if you are looking for soulful female jazz artists pick up Dinah Washington, Nancy King, Billy Holiday or Nancy Wilson. Conklin is about as soulful as Dorris Day.
A Dynamite Debut CD!.......1998-06-15
Backed by one of the best rhythm sections in the biz - Bill Mays on piano, Jon Burr on bass and Terry Clarke on drums - Mary Foster Conklin offers an astute array of music guaranteed to please fans of jazz vocals.
From Jeffrey Klitz's inventive arrangements of the Rodgers and Hammerstein standard, The Gentleman Is A Dope, and the Johnny Mercer-Matt Melneck hit, Goody Goody, to four new tunes by one of the most talented new composer on the block, David Cantor, she brings a sassy style to the music. Note the title tune: Crazy Eyes.
Pay special attention to Fried Bananas, a bebop tune by sax legend Dexter Gordon with lyrics by Anne Phillips. She nimbly nails this tricky, never recorded "vocalese" tune like a master. Also note the Willie Dixon blues tune, Dead Presidents.
Remember this singer's name!
