About the Artist
Growing up as the youngest of five children in Iowa, Singer/Songwriter Dave Zobl's childhood could easily read like an episode of the "Wonder Years." His debut CD "Best Day Yet" conjures up images of that time with songs such as "My Backyard," "Iowa Boy" and "My Old Man." Zobl was raised listening to the great music of the sixties and early seventies. "That was an incredible tme of music and I was fortunate enough to have older siblings who turned me on to alot of it. From the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bob Dylan, Carole King, CSNY, James Taylor and all the great Motown music, there were always albums and 45's around. Plus there was all the great radio stations on AM and the advent of the underground FM stations that introduced me to all kinds of music. His influences run the gamut from Van Morrison to John Prine and that diversity can be heard throughout "Best Day Yet."
With the release of his second CD, "Chapters" Zobl continues to develop his craft with songs that are at times personal and touching, at other times easy going and humorous but at all times relatable and accessable. " I turned forty last Spring which naturally lent itself to reflecting on the past and thinking about the future. That, and because I've always enjoyed reading and having books around seemed to make 'Chapters' a fitting title for the CD. I can equate every chapter of my life with the music I was listening to at the time. It has been a constant in my life, so now to be able to give creating my own music a shot is awesome. With any luck I will continue to grow and evolve as a musician and person (there is plenty of room) and that will be reflected in what I hope is many CD's to come."

Chosen by God.......2007-05-10
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS CD TO LISTEN TO "ALL THINGS ARE WORKING FOR ME" AND "YOUR LOVE", IT IS THE CD TO HAVE FOR YOUR COLLECTION.
One of the Best Ever At Great Value!!.......2006-06-11
One the best things about this album is that Fred was selling it at $12.50 when double albums were going for at least eighteen dollars or maybe more (I bought it in a name brand record store on Independence Drive in Charlotte, and I don't remember the name) in those days. Fred not only blessed my soul with this great collection of songs, but he blessed my pockets, too. This album started great ('Let The Praise Begin' was an absolute smash I still hope I can sing somewhere in a church) and, although there are some dead spots and some sketchy production of songs that had the potential to be huge (sometimes the way Fred presents some songs seem to lack the oomph the song needs to truly be great, although the lyrics are normally superlative and, at the least, fitting), the studio album leaves you with the confidence that you have bought a quality album. My personal favorites are the last two on the first disc, 'You Called Me Friend' and 'Lord, You Are My Song.' I started to like both of these after a while, though, because nine of the first eleven songs on this disc tend to monopolize your attention. The best of these songs are the aforementioned 'Let The Praise Begin,' 'Your Steps Are Ordered,' 'All Thing Are Working,' 'Please Don't Pass Me By,' 'Jesus Is All,' 'I Will Bless His Holy Name,' and 'He's God.' I would always listen to 'Jesus Is All' and 'You Were Much Closer,' but they always seemed to be not my cup of tea. That being said, only 'No Way, No Way [You Won't Lose],' 'Your Love,' and 'I Wanna Be Yours' weren't immediately enjoyable.
The second disc, Live, can be summed up in one word: fuggedaboudit! The live portion of the CD is awesome because it not only takes you down memory lane, you really only have to remember until 1995! It is the greatest short attention span theater in the history of man. I'm writing this review in 2006, eight years after this album was released, and the live disc resonates in my spirit even now. GET THIS DISC SET. It is essential for christians. You do not want to miss out.

Wow! What a gift Fred Hammond and RFC are to us! These were my first cd's and I absolutely fell in love with the music listening to a sampling at the music store. Fred and RFC are my very favorite gospel musicians and singers!!!
Still the Best.......2006-02-09
This is still a gospel super work. I have been listening to this CD for years, and I recently started listening to it again.
I think it's still the best gospel album ever produced. It's a rich and anointed piece of work. Once you get this CD you will absorb every song for months.
If you are just getting into Fred Hammond I would recommend this CD the most, followed by "Hooked On the Hits".
Outstanding.......2005-10-18
Fred Hammond is one of my favorite gospel artists. This CD is one of his best work. All the songs usher in praise and worship. They are well written and nicely put together. Fred Hammond is truly gifted and talented man of God. If you love gospel I definately recommend that you add this to your collection. Its a must have.

Writer-director Paul Schrader's films are always as memorable for their music as they are for their visuals--sometimes more so. Think of Giorgio Moroder's synthesizers pulsing through Cat People; think of Blondie's anthem for American Gigolo; think of Scott Johnson's remarkable score for Patty Hearst--and think of the full suite of music composed by Philip Glass for Schrader's ode to the deeply conflicted Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima. With its gilded, impressionistic set and its plot-eschewing cinematic vision, Mishima depended upon Glass's compositions for grounding. Despite the Japanese setting, the music is pan-global, typical of Glass's genre-absorbing minimalist style. A standout track is "Osamu's Theme," which features a catchy rock & roll guitar part against a string setting. And the album's quartets feature none other than the Kronos Quartet. --Marc Weidenbaum
Customer Reviews:
Mishima/Glass. You can't lose........2007-01-09
This is a great film. Any fan of Mishima will love it. A triad of Mishima's life, several of his stories and the last day of his life is well presented.
Philip Glass's score compliments it all.
Absolutely spectacular........2003-12-31
There are some soundtracks that seem to steal the show, and this is definitely one of them. It brilliantly captures the inner turmoil and dreams of a man, with sound that rings in your mind long after the movie is over. Reminiscent of Cello Suites by Bach with touch of modern synthesizers, it has very complex depth that is simply captivating. Definitely one of my all time favorites.
Glass's breakthrough...........2003-02-26
for me at least. This was the first CD of his where the full emotional potential of his music was realized. Some credit is due the Kronos Quartet who have never been better then they are here. And the remainder goes to PG for moving beyond the confines of strict minimalism to incorporate elements of traditional melody and harmony within the rhythmic structure of his compositions.
This is accessible, powerful, emotional music and has never worn out its welcome.
BTW, the final scene in the Truman Show uses the main theme of this soundtrack, so if you found the triumphant "rush" of that finale compelling, you will love to hear the rest in this soundtrack.
The music that never leaves you!.......2003-02-18
I was first introduced to the soundtrack from Mishima in 1986 by a young woman from LA. That may have been a part of why it stayed close to me... but I was entranced by Phillip Glass' music.... and this was the first I had ever heard from him! I sought out other Glass works, but none enthralled me as Mishima had done. I kept a crude cassette copy of this soundtrack for many years... until it wore out, frankly! 15 years later I remembered the haunting movie music, and bought the CD. Now, more than ever, I wanted to see this film! It did not do well at the box office and was supposedly under-rated, but Glass' music was definitely it's saving grace. I was completely captivated with the film as I watched... but I constantly found myself following the music, and not paying attention to the screen. It brought the sad and weird story of Mishima to life... yet it stands completely on it's own. The Kronos quartet performs marvelously. The music never leaves you!.... never!
Philip Glass on acoustic instruments.......2003-02-03
Yep, it's Philip Glass all right. The same sparseness, the same sense of quiet foreboding, the same two-chord minor key arpeggio out of which the man has built an entire career. What's different about this album is the instrumentation. Glass has abandoned synth-and-woodwind arrangements for a string quartet (with a little electric guitar thrown in for good measure). The resulting feel is warmer, less avant-garde and more like traditional classical music. To my ear, this shift in tone brings out a richness in the music that makes this his best work, but even if you prefer your Glass icy, the Mishima soundtrack is a side trip worth checking out.

Pianist Aldo Ciccolini garnered lots of attention in the late 1960s and early 1970s when he recorded all of Erik Satie's original piano music for EMI. The cycle remains first choice for Satie fans, who certainly will welcome its first complete (as opposed to excerpted) reissue on CD. Ciccolini's interpretations are paradigms of expressive economy and directness, and happily eschew the "let's see how slow and important I can make these works" attitude that sometimes prevails among younger Satie practitioners. Ciccolini's diamond-edged sonority, sparkling technique, and willingness to accept the composer's high quirk quotient at face value further enhance these performances. While Ciccolini admirably overdubs himself in the piano duet works, one misses the added color and ensemble give and take gained from Ciccolini's digital remakes partnered by Gabriel Tacchino. For the price, though, Satie fans can hardly go wrong. Don't let EMI's French-only annotations prevent you from acquiring this classic cycle. Get it while you can. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
The Simple, the Sublime, and the Surreal.......2007-03-27
This collection makes for good listening. There is a great deal of variety and character (Oh, is there character!) to be found in the various pieces. While most people have likely heard one or more of Satie's Gymnopedies at the very least in the background music of a TV ad, this collection pulls together the rarely-heard piano pieces as well. One that I had been seeking, Vexations, is a short piece to be repeated 840 times.
The titles of the pieces bear witness to Satie's sense of humor, rebellion against conventions of the day, and his pleasure in the surreal. Translations help to enjoy the unusual titles (who could not love "Piece in the Form of a Pear"?), some of which are reminiscent of Magritte's monikers.
Aldo Ciccolini's performances are clear, with definite respect for the composer's works. There was a noticeable distinction between the tempi of the works that come "in threes", such as the Gymnopedies.
I found that this collection fit nicely on my iPod, allowing me to take it on the road and enjoy it wherever the mood struck me. In some cases, the juxtaposition of Satie's music with my whereabouts provided yet another dimension of surreal-ity that had to be savored. The fact that most of these piano pieces are brief lends them to shuffling with other styles.
While this collection is not for the casual listener to classical music, it does allow you to come into closer contact with one of the more unconventional minds of classical music. If you are serious about late 19th- or early 20th-century music, especially French music, or the influence of popular music on serious music, then this is not only for you, but a bargain as well.
Great complete set.......2004-11-21
This is the definitive Satie collection for piano. Well-recorded and well played. I am a fan of French Impressionism in all of its incarnations and appreciated getting a full set of Satie under one cover. However, not all of these interpretations are my favorites. The best Gnossienne, IMHO, is that of Reinbert de Leeuw. He takes it slow and draws everything out of that piece. Ciccolini's interpretation is rushed and not as melodic. However, the Ciccolini tempo works well on other pieces, such as the other Satie favorite, Gymnopédies.
All in all, this collection is well worth having for any Satie fan.
the BEST.......2003-04-21
Satie is a weirdo. Often overlooked by serious classical enthusiasts for a variety of reasons, he was an eccentric person and a very original composer. His quirky, playful temperament gave his pieces the intrigue they still hold today.
Aldo Ciccolini is the perfect pianist for these pieces. He seems to be the quintessential Satie interpreter. His playing is dazzling, crisp, and delightful. Aldo has a real knack for these sorts of french artists, and really seems to understand their style.
Unlike many other pianists, he does not try to over-romanticize these works. He plays them appropriately - briskly, and brimming with energy. Even on such lulling pieces as the Gnossienes and Gymnopedies he plays with an essential awareness. His confidence is winning, and his understanding of the pieces makes them shine and scintillate. And at such a generous price, how can you go wrong? This is well worth it.

Listen for hours.......2006-01-25
I don't listen to a *whole* lot of classical music, and pretty much no other solo piano than this. I bought this album years ago, and it is that rare music, where everything is good. As the other review notes, it's fine in the background. But whenever, and wherever, you tune in to it, pay attention to it, something good is going on. And: you can listen to it again next week, or next month, or next year, and find things you didn't find before. It's good piano music that doesn't have to be dazzlingly fast or difficult. And, Glazer touches the notes just right: more gently than you might have thought a piano note could be.
Hauntingly beautiful.......2002-10-30
I first became acquainted with Satie when I found a transcription of Gymnopedie I in a guitar magazine. After years of playing it on classical guitar, I finally got a recording on piano, and was delighted to discover that, though few of the pieces match the haunting tone of Gymnopedie I, the rest of the music on the CD is of the same caliber. Great music to have going in the bckground, or to relax and listen to.

Customer Reviews:
Not your typical power metal album.......2007-07-10
You have to give Falconer credit for adding some new elements to the power metal genre. Rather than writing multi-part epics about dragons and knights or simply playing Helloween riffs at double-speed (that's right Rhapsody and DragonForce, you've been called out!), Falconer actually slows things down a bit, experimenting with melodies and incorporating folk elements into the traditional power metal style. They don't take it to the Jethro Tull-loving extent that Skyclad does, but they've definitely managed to set themselves apart from the pack with their unique style.
I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed their second album more than their self-titled debut. It's a lot more polished and professional, and the songwriting is greatly improved. Theatrical vocalist Matthias Blad seems a lot more comfortable in a metal role this time around, and as a result his performance sounds a lot more confident and dynamic. It's a shame he and the band parted ways after this album was released, because it was his steady voice that really made the melodies and folk aspects of the music work.
I'd recommend Falconer to any power metal fan that is looking for something different from the countless Gamma Ray/Rhapsody-type bands out there. Those bands have their place of course, but Falconer really is a breath of fresh air.
Not as good as their first.......2006-01-13
Not as good as their first album but it's still decent, there are a few boring parts though. Mathias Blad voice is still great as it was on the self title. I give this a 3.5 out of 5, this is not a great album but it has it's moments.
Best Vocalist in Power Metal.......2004-04-02
I am new to the genre of power metal. I'm more of a Cannibal Corpse kind of gal. However, when I heard that voice, I couldn't get enough of it. This guy can really sing! A lot of bands try too hard to sound like opera stars, but Falconer has serious vocal talent. I don't have the know-how to break down the music and really give you a detailed review of this album. But I can tell you that the album has standard renaissance rhythms that I found very enjoyable and even infectious. I just wanted to inform everybody out there that no matter what your metal taste, if you have an ear for quality vocals, you need to listen to this album.
Just as good as their 1st.......2004-01-27
After listening to this CD for about a week, I definitely rated their 1st self titled CD to be superior. But, as I have now played this constantly for the past 2 months and also going back and listening to the 1st, I have to say that this is on par with that fantastic effort.
This CD is excellent, the guitars, the drums, the songs and especially the vocals are high quality. What a great voice this guy has, especially the fact that his voice is unique and mesmirizing.
So many bands try very hard to impress, but there is no substitute for pure natural talent. These guys are top of the pecking order, the best around.
The Legacy Continues...........2003-11-13
WOW ! That's all I really have to say. Don't listen to the reviewers who say that this album is not at good their debut. We have the same great vocals and melodies, with even more of a folk medieval sound.
The only down side to this album is "Busted To The Floor" with music and lyrics that don't fit the album. File this one under "FILLER". I can't really say which tracks are better than others becuase they are all great! My 2 favorites would be "The Clarion Call" and "Stand In Veneration". What awesome double bass pedalling and guitar riffs! The guitar solo in "For Life and Liberty" is awesome! "Lament of Ministrel" has a great metal riff too. This album cannot even compare with any of trash that is on the radio today; whether it's power metal or not!
Throw this bad boy in your cart and you can thank me later...:)

Album Description
It must be their unique mix of years of experience, a never-ending supply of great song ideas and their unique overall sound that accounts for the fact that Saga have been at the very top of the Progressive Rock music scene for over 25 years. Whenever Michael Sadler, Ian and Jim Crichton and Jim "Daryl" Gilmour get together to play music, the result is always unmistakably Saga. After achieving hit-record success in the 80's with songs like Wind Him Up and On The Loose, Saga continue to soldier-on into the new millennium. Inside Out Music is proud to now have the band as part of our family.
The Chapters Live will be the first time that this conceptual story will unfold. All the music was released on previous studio releases, but this is the first time that the story is played in order and actually makes intended coherent sense.
Customer Reviews:
Finally.......2006-11-10
All the Chapters played live in order. Forget about it! I wish they played here in the states...
Good - but different.......2006-05-25
I was really looking forward to this album. I'd listened to the Chapters on the original studio albums again and again (and honestly, what true Saga fan doesn't have a mixtape, burned CD or playlist of at least the original 8 chapters in their library?)
The album, when it came, was a bit of a dissapointment.
First things first - technically, the album is excellent. It's hardly noticeable that the songs were recorded live and not in the studio. No complaints there.
However, some of the musical decisions leave me cold. When you've listened to the original studio cuts dozens, nay hundreds, of times you get accustomed to how they sound. You can hum the melodies and sing along with the words. And then comes the live album, and the songs are different.
Most obvious is "Images (Chapter 1)," the very first song on the album. A beautiful, haunting song... you sing along to the end of the first verse, and the last note is different from what you expect. A more egregious fault is the removal of the whole third verse from the song, robbing it of much of its pathos (interestingly enough, the included booklet of lyrics shows all three verses.)
"No Regrets (Chapter 5)" suffers from similar melodic changes (although this and all other songs on the album are not edited for length) again causing that jarring feeling when listening to what should be a familiar tune.
One almost wonders who the target audience for this album is. One would expect that it's targeted to the diehard Saga fan - but in that case, why meddle with the songs? It doesn't make any sense to me.
For these reasons I can't give this album 5 stars. I'm being generous in giving it 4 stars (I'd rate it a 3.5) due to the high production quality overall. But honestly, I doubt I'll listen to it as often as I listen to my playlist of the original studio chapters.
Album Titles.......2006-04-05
I am a Saga fan ... but I do tend to enjoy studio albums over live recordings. Unfortunately, this album is no exception. Although the production is good, I do prefer Saga's studio versions of the chapter songs. So, I thought I would put together my own studio version of the chapters in an iTunes playlist. For those interested, here are the songs and their studio album sources:
Disk 1
1. Chapter One: Images -- Images at Twilight
2. Chapter Two: Don't Be Late -- Silent Knight
3. Chapter Three: It's Time -- Images at Twilight
4. Chapter Four: Will It Be You? -- Saga
5. Chapter Five: No Regrets -- Worlds Apart
6. Chapter Six: Tired World -- Saga
7. Chapter Seven: Too Much To Lose -- Silent Knight
8. Chapter Eight: No Stranger -- Worlds Apart
Disc: 2
1. Chapter Nine: Remember When -- Full Circle
2. Chapter Ten: Not This Way -- Full Circle
3. Chapter Eleven: Ashes To Ashes -- House of Cards
4. Chapter Twelve: You Know I Know -- Marathon
5. Chapter Thirteen: Uncle Albert's Eyes -- Full Circle
6. Chapter Fourteen: Streets Of Gold -- Marathon
7. Chapter Fifteen: We'll Meet Again -- House of Cards
8. Chapter Sixteen: Worlds Apart -- Marathon
If you are a real Saga fan, this CD is quite enjoyable ... but for the rest I recommend their studio recordings. I give this album 3.5 stars (rounded it up to 4 'cause I really do love this band).
Canada does have great prog pebtch.......2006-01-04
This was a great X-MAS gift from my wife. How did she know I loved this group? Maybe, it's because I bought it and she reimbused me. I am happy to say this was my favorite present. This CD features all the great chapter songs that have been sprinkled throughout their many albums since 1978. They finally put them all together in an incredible concert performance. The Chapters put together are a wonderful mysterious science fiction concept. As I have said before, Saga is awesome when they do concept works like Generation 13. Highlights include Images, Tired World, Uncle Albert's Eyes and Streets of Gold. As a matter of fact, the newer Chapters from the more recent albums are just as powerful as their earlier material. The booklet that comes with this is fabulous with great artwork and all the lyrics to all the Chapters. Let's hope this book continues with more chapters in the future. Thanks Saga for treating your hardcore fans to this gem. But, I also think new comers will enjoy this progressive masterwork. Idiots like Black Ju Ju can put down Canadian progressive music but remember he is just a hoser- take off!
As good as it gets.......2005-12-19
This disk is really amazing. Saga is the most talented prog band I have heard and this disk shows it all off. From the guitar riffs of Ian Chrichton to the unbelievable vocals by Michael Sadler, the Chapters musically is perfect. The idea of the Chapters itself is an awesome story that has taken 20 years to complete. This is a must have disk for any Saga fan. This band sounds better live than most bands today sound after being produced in the studio.

complete but lacking.......2005-06-14
While I am a fan of Thibaudet in general, he just seems lost here. Satie is deceptively difficult to judge as a performer, the music is at times mercurial or static, profound or frivolous, or all of the above. Yet one hardly needs to underline the oddness, it's perfectly revealed if you play it straight.
While some misread notes suggest he may not really know these pieces, Thibaudet manages to project something less than a competent sight reading. In such an endeavor he would certainly get the right feel occasionally by accident. Instead, he regularly puts the wrong foot forward, with odd accents and effects getting in the way, perhaps trying too hard to add spin to music whose mysteries refuse to unfold under such duress.
I would recommend collecting a number of different performers: Reinbert DeLeeuw, Pascal Roge, Anne Queffelec, JoAnna MacGregor and Michel Legrand have all made worthy contributions to the recent discography and their combined recordings would make a pretty-near complete survey.
good for completists, but..........2004-05-18
I jumped at the chance to buy this set; a new digital recording of Satie's complete solo piano music. I had admired Jean-Yves Thibaudet in the past and had seen him perform Messiaen's "Turangalila Symphony"; a great performance. However, after listening to this set for three straight months, I'm rather frustrated with it, mostly on aesthetic grounds, since I can't deny Thibaudet's talents; I just disagree with some of his interpretations.
To start, most of the shorter, "lite" pieces are performed very well on disc 4. Even the most popular, (Gymnopedies, Gnossiennes) are excellent. I am also thankful I now have performances of "Uspud" and many of Satie's conservatory assignments, played expertly and with good humor. For these, the set is worth having.
But now, the bad news. As I have complained about in the past with Thibaudet's Ravel discs, I'm frankly rather put-off by his inexplicable, pointless staccato in many of the pieces. "Petite Overture a la Danser" is one of my favorite Satie miniatures, and here Thibaudet botches it by playing it way too fast with no pedal. It sounds like a joke, and I think he totally misses the point of the piece. In the "Nazareen" preludes, he adds his own extreme dynamics which are not indicated in the original scores, and the effect seems like a cheap attempt to add "spice" to what are supposed to be meditative sound constructions, based on poetry forms rather than classical forms.
"Prelude to the Heroic Gate of Heaven" is taken far too slow, and Thibaudet completely cuts out the "Curtain" coda in the original Salabert edition for no apparent reason; he seems determined to give the piece a more "proper" ending, and for this listener, it's a terrible, narcissistic, and disrespectful miscalculation.
I will keep this set since it is a complete document, flawed though it may be. But I still must insist that the best living interpreter of Satie's piano music is the ever-underrated Reinbert DeLeeuw, who is completely in-tune with Satie's sly magic. His tempos may be slow, his dynamics few, but that's the whole point; this is highly personal music, and DeLeeuw has an aesthetic I can personally agree with. For an audible explanation of what I'm talking about, compare the performances of "Petite Overture a la Danser" by DeLeeuw and Thibaudet, and you'll see what I mean.
Yes, its worth five discs.......2003-12-17
Each disc averages about 75 minutes of music. Over six hours of Satie? Definitely yes. If you have an affinity for Satie's classic pieces you should not pass up this set. There are so many standout pieces in so many wonderful styles you can only leave this set with wonder. And Thibaudet seems made for this music. The best interpreter of Satie that I've heard. His technique is amazing with such a range of subtle fingering tempo and dynamics. Its as though I've heard some of these for the first time with new shocks of emotion I hadn't experienced before. Not to be missed.

Customer Reviews:
Ciccolini Knows Satie.......2004-06-02
Aldo Ciccolini is arguably the greatest interpreter of Erik Satie, and he can also be credited with rescuing the minimalist from certain obscurity with the recordings he made of the composer's music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. For years I have enjoyed selections of those performances and I figured it was time to upgrade to a more complete set. As a result, I recently got this title. Unfortunately, this 5CD box set from EMI Classics collects Ciccolini's digital remakes of Satie's Piano Works, and not the original recordings of which I had grown so fond. (I have since discovered that a French Import of the complete original recordings is available.) The overall difference is minimal (yes, pun intended!) but I have to give the nod to the analog performances because of a slightly warmer, brighter sound. Also with a first time recording, there is an intangible element in the charting of new territory that I feel is never quite recaptured when revisited. With that being said, for the pieces requiring two pianists, the digital accounts are superior. While Ciccolini overdubbed himself originally, here he partners with Gabriel Tacchino to greater effect. In all, this is an excellent set by an unparalled master of Satie's music, but if I had to it over again I would have chosen the first incarnation.
