Customer Reviews:
Too busy.......2006-07-14
I was hoping for more music - there's just too much storytelling for my and my kids' taste. We love the Beethoven's Wig series and were hoping this would be similar.
good product and fast service.......2005-09-11
Product arrived in ample time overseas and was pleased with quality of product!
what a road trip.......2005-02-21
i bought this item after reading some of the reviews on amazon for my nephews who are 2 and 4 years of age. two months after christmas their mom was explaining how they request the cd everytime they are in the car. she groaned when i was in the car and they boys wanted to show me how much they liked the cd. during the trip i witnessed a mother humming along to the music with her children, the boys singing to excerpts, and an overall execptional learning experience about music, culture, and history. if you are looking for something that all children will like, passes the time on a road trip, and teaches important lessons about life without being pretentious then get this cd, it is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
Mesmerized and moved mom to tears.......2005-01-26
This CD is awesome, the music great, the story captivating. But it's Mozart, you already know about the music. Other reviewers have already discussed the story and I agree with their assessments that it's very good. The reason for this review is to say that my very active, never stopping, constantly in motion 5 year old SAT DOWN AND LISTENED without fidgeting or fiddling for a full 20 minutes and then sat but fiddled for the remainder of the CD. Maybe this is not a big deal to moms of "normal" energy level children -- but this simple act of being still for 20 minutes moved me to tears. I said nothing before putting the CD in, I just put it in while he was doing his running around. Within seconds of hearing the story start he sat down on the floor, crossed his legs, and listened while looking at the speakers. I have never seen this behavior from my child before, ever. Please note that this is a child who is not ADD, he just cannot be still. He listens to hundreds of hours of stories we read to him -- while he's doing something else. He "watches" videos -- while he's doing something else. He reads, while clapping or tapping out the beat of the syllables. I cannot remember my child ever stopping what he was doing to JUST LISTEN. When it was over he said, "That was a cool story," and got up to run around. That was it, but that's high praise from this child. To see my child sitting still for a full 20 minutes, you cannot begin to imagine my awe. I am running right out to get the rest of the series! Bravo to the producers!
Daughter loves it.......2003-03-27
My daughter is 5 and loves to hear this CD over and over in the car.

"Dakota Breezes" Pleases.......2000-01-01
Like a harvest from the fertile fields of the midwest, singer/songwriter Chuck Suchy provides us with bumper crop of topnotch songs on his CD "Dakota Breezes". This collection also includes the album "Much To Share", for a total of 18 selections. All, with the exception of the traditional instrumental "A Shottis Medley", are written and sung by Suchy, backed by his own accomplished guitar playing and a variety of appropriate acoustic instruments. His themes are familiar ones to anyone who has spent time in rural North America: the joys and sorrows of farming, community events, local characters, family, hope, and love. Suchy has a gift for the turn of a phrase that makes the entire collection a pleasure to listen to. Particularly touching are "The Story of Hazel Miner", about a young heroine from Oliver County in west central North Dakota, and "Three-In-The-Afternoon" that evokes "the hurt of leaving the land". He provides a variety of song styles from slow ballads that showcase his unique vocal talent, to spirited, jaunty tunes guaranteed to set your toes tapping. This CD is musically satisfying and spiritually uplifting.

Lovely Piano Miniatures.......2006-06-13
Felix Mendelssohn's "Songs Without Words" will always have a special place in my heart because one of the "Venetian Boat Songs", opus 19 no. 6 was the first work of serious music that I performed in a piano recital as a child. I have returned to the collection many times over the years, both to hear the music and on occasion to practice some of the pieces.
Mendelssohn composed eight sets of "Songs without Words", each consisting of six pieces, over a course of 12 years (1835, 1837, 1841, 1844, 1845, and two posthumously published sets in 1847). These works are romantic miniatures, characterized by their lyricism (the title of "songs" is apt), elegance, polish, grace, and imagination. Each piece is intended to capture for the listener a specific mood or emotion; they are of the type of romantic piano music sometimes referred to as a "character" piece, as are the individual sections of Schumann's Carnaval and Scenes from Childhood, Scubert's Impromptus, and Moments Musicaux, and much of Chopin. Many of the pieces in the collection have acquired nicknames over the years, but Mendelssohn himself only gave titles to five: the three "Venetian Boat Songs", the "Duetto", opus 38 no. 6, and the "folksong", opus 53 no. 5.
Mendelssohn's Songs were highly popular during the mid-19th Century but have subsequently been criticized by many for their alleged superficiality, their generally cheerful tone, and their lack of intense passion. I find the criticism misdirected. These pieces were composed for amateurs to play in their own homes. They have a flow and a beauty to them that I would not part with. It is sad that domestic music-making, people playing for themselves for the sheer joy of it, is becoming an endangered art.
This two-CD mid-priced Phillips set includes the complete Songs without Words performed by Ilse von Alpenheim. In addition, the compilation includes three of Mendelssohn's other piano works: two sets of variations and an andante cantabile. Ms. von Alpenheim was the wife of conductor Antal Dorati. Her recorded output was not extensive, but it includes the Haydn piano concertos with Dorati at the podium. Ms. von Alpenheim is a near-ideal pianist for Mendelssohn's Songs. She has an exquisite, polished, touch, a singing melodic line and flexible but controlled rhythm. She plays without mannerism. She neither prettifies these works nor attempts to find profundities in them. She offers the type of performance that one can imagine hearing in a home or in an intimate hall. I enjoyed relistening to these performances, score in hand.
Listeners will each find their own favorities in this collection. My favorites include the three Venetian Boat Songs, the first song in opus 62, the opus 62 no. 3 "funeral march" and the the first, and surprisingly romantic, work of opus 67,
Rehearing Mendelssohn's Songs brought me happy moments and made me want to turn to some of these works, including the Venetian Boat Song I played as a child and its two companions, on the piano. Amateur pianists and those who love the piano will enjoy this recording.

Excellent, delightful, colorful.......2005-03-21
This is a very expressive and colorful, but not overstated recording. I picked it up a number of years not knowing anything about the performer, but it was the only complete recording in the store at the time. I was impressed the first time I played it, but since then, my enthusuasm grows for it every time I hear it. Only later did I learn that in addition to being Antal Dorati's widow, that she has recorded all of Haydn's piano works and just a few other albums--I will surely be on the lookout for them. I only wish she had recorded more widely.
Not professional quality playing.......2005-02-03
I would avoid this set, despite its price and the fact that it includes all the Songs without Words. Alpenheim is simply not a professional quality pianist and was likely only recorded because of her husband, the great conductor Antal Dorati. Alpenheim doesn't have the technical proficiency or range of textures one would expect from a first-rate pianist but what is most annoying is her inability to shape the music's melodic line into an expressive whole. Look elsewhere.
Ravishimg songs without words!.......2004-12-17
Antal Dorati `s wife was an exquisite pianist wrought in the purest roots of the late Romanticism . Her Mendelssohn texture reveals the wide scope she had . Despoiled of that slender refinement which weakened seriously the score, she is more interested in extracting the dramatic nucleus instead the possible fireworks and the sweet charm of every piece .
The other three recommended versions would be in this precise order : Walter Gieseking , Annia Dorffman and Daniel Barenboim.
Pitifully Guiomar Novaes that incredible brazilian pianist just recorded several pieces but never as whole .
A lot of listening.......2002-09-13
This CD began a serious exploration of Songs Without Words for me that has included the Barenboim recording and others. I heartily don't recommend the latter as being incredibly fast and lacking any sensitivity. By contrast, this interpretation has kept me thinking and holds interest after many months. In fact, I'm on this space to purchase a replacement disc. I should also mention that it is very well recorded and retains the bass without boosting. If you appreciate Songs Without Words, this is the best recording I've found.

Don't Expect to be Knocked Over........2000-10-13
The great Austrian violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) did not undertake many concerto recordings. The two concertos featured on this CD he recorded twice however, firstly in Berlin in 1926 and again in London in the 1930s. Producer and restoration engineer Mark Obert-Thorn has worked his magic to provide us with the opportunity to listen with ease and full enjoyment to these ancient 1926 sets of 78s, comprising the two concertos and the two "encore" items that occupied their last sides. The Italian words "dolce" and "cantabile" are the best I can think of to describe Kreisler's playing and his approach to each concerto. Don't expect a performance of the Beethoven concerto that knocks you over by its boldness and punch. It's impact is aurally reduced further by the lamely conducted and distantly placed orchestra, suggesting a discretely orchestrated piano accompaniment. Kreisler, it should be remembered, provided the cadenzas always heard in this concerto nowadays. Naxos has made all this available at the lowest possible price, together with the usual objective and non-judgmental notes provided by their regular annotator Keith Anderson.

CD Review Magazine rates this release 10/10 - the highest rating! On a hill above scenic Lake Ontario, the music of the band organ can be heard on the breezes drifting over the blue water. Twenty fox-trots, waltzes, and marches bring back the sounds of summer from Seabreeze Park - the whirling carousel and prancing horses spin around to the music of childhood, and this fabulous recording captures the wonderful memories. Grab the popcorn, and come for a ride!

Customer Reviews:
A Sensual Lady from Curacao sings with Saudade!.......2007-02-13
Kerry Linder is a song stylist with so much warmth to her voice and demeanor of putting across a song that she makes you `sail away with her' effortlessly. Singing a collection of songs in both English and Portuguese Linder has a purity of pitch that enables her to glides through many types of tunes with a confidence that puts the listener at ease.
Accompanied on this CD by an ensemble featuring Paulo Andre Tavares, guitar and Mauro Refosco, percussion, Linder enhances her vocals with additional musicians depending on the selection she and arranger Tavares select: these can include harmonica, accordion, trumpet, cello, flute, trombone, clarinet, bass and saxophone. The rhythms are definitely all bossa nova but with a full jazz bent. The results are mellow works that include the title song, `As Time Goes By', `That's All', as well as lesser-known beauties in Portuguese.
Kerry Linder has that special quality of a beautiful, gentle voice that radiates intelligence and taste and yet incorporates that nostalgia of the Portuguese word `saudade'. This CD is one that will find frequent playing in almost every collection of fine music. Grady Harp, February 07
Great Brazilian Jazz ~~~~~~~~.......2005-11-12
I think this is a very good Brazilian Jazz albums.
Kerry's voice is beautiful, the instrumentation is impeccable, and the selection of tunes are perfect for Kerry's debut album.
Her bilingual skills are fantastic, I enjoy her English and Portuguese very much.
Congratulations Kerry
P.S. I love the songs "Deixa", "Language and Love", "Inquietacao", "I Don't Know" and "As Time Goes By".
Beautiful voice, instrumentals and listening experience.......2004-04-17
Kerry Lindner's elegant voice complements the stunning instrumentals. The album goes well with glass of fine wine, creating a relaxing and stimulating listening experience. You will be hearing more about Kerry Lindner.
