Short-lived and with only a limited output, this five-piece bluegrass band nevertheless helped spread the gospel of this extraordinary genre via the famous coattails of its most notorious member: Jerry Garcia. However, they were no novelty act. Breakdown is the second posthumous release culled from a series of 1973 concerts in San Francisco. At a robust 70 minutes, the album flows like a complete live set, featuring scrumptious musicianship and harmonious camaraderie. Much better than the eponymous debut from 1975--and a perfect second volume companion to 1996's equally worthy That High Lonesome Sound--Breakdown features covers of greats Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs, originals by the band's guitarist Peter Rowan, fiddler Vassar Clements and banjoist Garcia. A must own for any fan of acoustic music and a great primer for bluegrass neophytes. --Greg Emmanuel

Breakdown: Live Recordings.......2007-05-12
Great Bluegrass music! A must have for the fan of the genre.
Real Bluegrass But With An Innovative Approach.......2006-01-20
What I like about this band is that is they are able to mix authentic bluegrass with a little something more experimental and unique. For example, the songs include several covers from bluegrass legends like Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers. But also some originals, mostly written by guitarist Peter Rowan. Actually I think Rowan demonstrates outstanding song writing ability on songs like "Panama Red" and "Midnight Moonlight". So it's a shame that he remained in relative obscurity as a musician. But still his music shines through on this album. I also love the mandolin sound of David Grisman and Vassar Clements' fiddle playing!
Among the traditional songs, I especially liked the patriotic "Down Where The River Bends" and the old gospel tune "Drifting Too Far From The Shore". It's ironic because the lyrics of these songs are so different from my personal experience and yet they manage to move me deeply. It's funny how music can do that to you. In any case, this is a fine album and I recommend it highly to both straight-up bluegrass lovers and rock fans drawn to it by Jerry Garcia. Good stuff!
Just Excellent!!.......2005-09-15
I grew up on bluegrass, and then as i got older I grew away from it. Years later I was listening to Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, etc.. It was after listening to "Cumberland Blues" off the Dead's Workingmans Dead album that I heard the banjo in the background. I found out later it was Garcia. Looked into it further and found Old & In the Way years ago. I've been playing banjo going on 14 years now because of Jerry, and the love for the music that I rediscovered. A lot of people put down his playing, but you try picking a banjo with your thumb, pointy and ring (middle finger was chopped off in accident as a child) and you'll see his handicap didn't slow him down. The rest of the musicians are excellent as well. Vassar was a fiddling Wonder! And the "dawg" is great as well. All three OAITW albums are classics!
Vassar--Goodbye and Hello.......2005-08-19
I agree wholeheartedly with reviewer Cox here. Most will come for Garcia, but will stay for Vassar. The group playing is a little ragged here and there (a live performance, after all), but so much is first rate bluegrass, and I've never heard Vassar Clements so fiery--more daring than on his work with Nitty Gritty DB (which is also splendid), Bela Fleck, or even on his solo albums. Grisman is a delight as always, bur VC steals the show. Sorry to say, I just read Vassar's obit in the NYTimes yesterday. Alas. But this CD is a reminder of his great talent.
Fantastic album.......2005-08-15
In short, this is one immensely satisfying bluegrass album. The three soloists (Garcia, Clements, and Grisman) are excellent, and Clements' fiddling is jaw-dropping. Grisman, as usual, displays a keen sense of phrasing and a still-astonishing speed. Garcia can actually play the banjo with some ability, though his solo breaks are usually restricted to the melody or some spruced-up chord progression. It's interesting that after almost every solo, Jerry gets some cheers--from G.D. fans, I imagine--while Grisman and Clements (both of whom are vastly superior to Garcia in bluegrass terms) rarely get much individual applause.
I'm not trying to disparage Garcia's playing--he definitely holds it together, and considering his G.D. history, I was surprised by his abilities.
The group excells at making the songs accessible, both in the choice of songs and in the playing.
Some particularly enjoyable songs:
Kissimmee Kid (Clements and Grisman shine)
Wild Horses
Midnight Moonlight
The Hobo Song
Buy this album immediately. It's certainly worth it; when I first bought it, it didn't leave my car stereo for about 2 weeks.

Bluegrass Breakdown: 14 Instrumentals.......2007-05-16
This product was delivered on Monday, April 16th to the wrong address. The postal service is very uncooperative. They supposedly have put a trace on it.So as of today I have still not received my CD which was for a wedding in April. I finally figured out how to email Amazon last week and I still haven't heard anything from them either. I do a lot of shopping on line, but this has been a real bad experience, especially with the P.O.

good but not great.......2007-03-23
This album was good, not great. If you want to hear great then get Tony Rice the bluegrass album or another one called "ultimate Pickin'" , for bluegrass with singing try ricky skaggs at charleston hall. Those are great albums, this was okay.
Great bluegrass -- Excellent value.......2003-01-05
All-instrumental collections of bluegrass are hard to find, and if you like it when a band takes a break from singing and just plays their instruments, here's your chance for total immersion. All the songs on this compilation are from Rounder Records albums released 1976-1998, by artists with familiar names like Alison Krauss and Tony Rice, and others you may never have heard of. All are first rate, foot stompin' renditions of bluegrass traditionals, with a few great originals -- Bill Monroe's "Bluegrass Breakdown" and Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Chimes." Best known for most listeners is a rousing version of "Orange Blossom Special" by the Johnson Mountain Boys. If you like bluegrass with plenty of pickin' at breakneck speed, this CD will keep you smilin' through many, many replays.
Bluegrass Breakdown: 14 Instrumentals.......2002-02-06
I liked only the tracks 1 and 6. The songs have good banjo picking but are not beautiful enough to keep me listening more than one time.
Bluegrass Breakdown.......2000-09-04
...It's a shame the scale only goes to 5 stars, because this CD is...if you know and love Bluegrass is of the best I've heard in a long time..not withstanding the major bands out there!!!...If you crave Bluegrass.....GET THIS CD.....!!!!

Good instrumental.......2007-02-05
THis is a good instrumental bluegrass album. It is not as good as "ultimate Pickin'" . That was an amazing album but this isn't bad.
We need more of this!.......2005-09-03
Bravo CMH - this is what we need. Bluegrass instrumentals are quite rare these days and the best of them were done in the 1970's. CMH have delivered a fine package for the bluegrasser who prefers not to listen to a bluegrass voice which often detracts from the fine acoustic music. Let us be honest and say that many singers have B-Awful voices and instrumentals like this terrific collection are wonderful to locate. Thank you CMH.
Bluegrass magic.......2003-10-03
There are lots of wonderful Bluegrass albums around, but this one is really great. I recommend it very highly, and would give it more than five stars if possible. Every song is brilliant and it is impossible to single out any one track as better than the rest. Even non-bluegrass fans would enjoy this album if they like first-rate musicians plying their trade. A truly excellent album!

Bent on Tradition ( Mostly ).......2002-05-19
Although this CD is largely influenced by the traditional bluegrass style of playing, it also includes a few tracks which are influenced by other forms of popular music. For example, the track "With A Little Help From My Friends" is an old Beatles tune, and the track "Gretna Green" is more of a Hawaiian piece. These are just as enjoyable as the traditional songs and add variety to the CD.
Overall, I would say that this CD contains a lot of good recordings and is worth the purchase.

What a fiddler (and unforgettable personality) Buck Ryan was ! .......2007-01-02
Playing Time - 40:02 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal. whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians. Produced by Lee Sutton (the same visionary who captured the music of the legendary J.E. Mainer), this album captured some of the consistently high quality work of Red Smiley and his band working with Buck Ryan, "world champion fiddler." This album was originally released in 1971 and called "Fiddling Buck Ryan" (RR-244). He is backed by Don Reno (banjo, lead guitar), Red Smiley (guitar), Bill Harrell (guitar), Jerry McCoury (bass), Tom Kiley (steel guitar), and Jim Ebert (piano). There are drums in the mix, but they are not credited on the CD jacket. With tunes like "Whispering" and "Red's Virginia Waltz," the tunes are not all breakdowns either. "Fiddling Around" is a rag that shows why Buck won many fiddle contests like the Natl. Hillbilly Music Contest in Warrenton, Va.
Buck Ryan lived from 1925-1982. He started playing pro in Virginia about 1940. His first band, Salt & Peanuts, was on WSVA in Harrisonburg, Va. With Lee Moore & Toby Stroud, they played on the WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, W.V. He also played the Old Dominion Barn Dance in the mid-50s in Richmond. From 1956-60, he played with Jimmy Dean's Texas Wildcats, and then went with The Yates Bros. and the Clinch Mountain Ramblers (Wayne Yates, Bill Yates, Bill Harrell, Smiley Hobbs). In the early-60s, he was part of Bill Harrell's Virginians, before going with Reno, Harrell and the Tennessee Cut-Ups. If you ever saw Buck Ryan play, you'll know that he had an unforgettable charisma, poise and smile. Now, we'll just have to imagine that as we listen to this archival material.
Don Reno & Red Smiley, of course, were one of the pioneering first-generation bluegrass bands, very popular and influential throughout the 50s and 60s, but never as commercially successful as Flatt and Scruggs or Bill Monroe. Red Smiley brought his new group, the Bluegrass Cutups, to Rural Rhythm, with Tater Tate in Reno's place. It's fun to hear Reno taking some lead guitar breaks on this Buck Ryan fiddle album.
As part of Rural Rhythm's archive, Uncle Jim O'Neal liked to offer 20 tracks on the LPs originally issued. For CD, the music's been remastered. Liner notes are included from Barry Willis, author of "America's Music: Bluegrass."
"Fiddle Breakdown" is a great introduction to Buck Ryan and a classic band backing him up, as well as taking a few breaks. Piano, drums and steel were included to give the music more of a commercial sound. Don't expect elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. Just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
Best of genre, a must have for your country collection........2001-01-27
If you like classic country or fiddle music, I highly recommend this title. You will find outstanding selections for fiddle, banjo, string guitar, and steel guitar. Natural Bridge Blues (track three) has wonderful guitar picking probably by Red Smiley. Track seven, stomping with Reno, features great fiddling from Buck Ryan with Don Reno picking guitar and nice work from Tom Kiley on steel guitar.
The liner notes states that the album contains examples of western swing, contest fiddling, and many bluegrass standards. I have listened to modern bluegrass and this album sounds more like classic country than bluegrass. There are no vocals and thankfully no rock-style drums that are the bane of modern country music.
My original album had lots of surface noise. This CD solves that problem and brings out the wonderful bass guitar, played by Jerry McCoury, that was barely audible on the original album which had very narrow groove spacing. Although the album has twenty selections, all of the songs are very good and there is no filler material.
Originally released as an album by Buck Ryan, the CD now features Reno and Smiley because of their name recognition. This is one of those rare albums that really merits five stars.
Music Footnote:
Track 18, In the Pines, was also covered by the rock group Nirvana in the early 1990's.

Good Old Missouri Style.......2002-11-01
If you love John Hartford's fiddling, this CD is a must-have. Hartford produced this CD and later recorded some of the tunes he learned from Goforth, one of his fiddling heroes (see "Hamilton Ironworks"). Missouri fiddling does have different characteristics compared to Appalachian styles -- in fact there are many different documented styles of Missouri fiddling. Goforth has a spirited approach to the tunes and tells some good stories too. It's sure to inspire you to either dance or fiddle along!

Mountain Breakdown breaks down the essence of Bluegrass.......2002-07-12
I would give this album 4 1/2 stars if Amazon had a way to let me and I will tell you why...This is a great collectiom of banjo songs. I especialy liked the Roger McGuinn songs. He was an idol of mine growing up (and all you Byrds fans should check this out). I picked this CD up mainly because of his involvment. I also liked the song by David Lindley. I was also a big fan of El Rayo X in the 70s as well. This is a good collection because all the songs fit so well together. So in short,I recommend this album to fans of O Brother Where Art Thou and quality instrumental music.

Album Description
Pickin' on Radiohead is an epic ride through the band's complex arrangements and lucid textures. Pulling songs from their entire catalog, Radiohead's anthemic classics and more experimental moments are interpreted with guitar, mandolin, and banjo. Pickin' on Radiohead is a great homage to the band and a delight for any bluegrass fan.

Much ,much ,much better than you might think........2007-06-11
Unlike the previous reveiwer I am not a huge Radiohead fan, my interest in them waned after The Bends. However, having listened to this selection of tracks I may well go back and find the originals. Corporate Love Breakdown's tribute is a great listen. Complex arrangements, sounding improvised but very tightly played on mandolin, fiddle etc. This recording is more than the sum of its parts, they blend Radiohead and bluegrass, and come up with something pretty special.
Incredibly well-done.......2006-07-31
Huge Radiohead fan here. Saw this and had to have it. Pleasantly surprised. This performance managed to stay true to the melodic themes of the original songs (especially the vocal melodies) while replacing the guitars and electronica of Radiohead with improvisational/classic bluegrass elements. Check out the groove of "National Anthem." Other high points include the percussion-heavy "Myxamatosis" and a gorgeous interpretation of "Fake Plastic Trees."

This doesnt have a Tuba on it or a Electric guitar.......2004-06-20
Your wrong, this has no tuba or an electric guitar, it does have an electric bass. Do Your research before You write a review lady!
Very energetic music for a bargain price.......2003-10-09
I bought this CD and enjoy every song. The traditional songs are so energetic. I think the music is a combination of Scruggs, Bela Fleck style and old time banjo music.
What's unique about the music on this CD is even though it some tuba, drums and even electric guitars are also added to the mixed which gave a great sound even though the sound is still bluegrass overall. I know that drums, tubas and electric guitars don't belong in bluegrass music, but this CD is the exception rather than the rule.
Something's missing..........2001-10-27
It's kind of hard to tell exactly what's going on with the banjo on this CD because it's so poorly mixed you can barely hear it. And this is supposed to be a banjo CD. At times the most prominent sounds on this disk are the drums. And that brings me to my other point...there are no drums in bluegrass. Sorry, but that's the way it is. Every song on this CD is accompanied by drums. It's just not right. If you want to hear a clean, powerful version of Ruben (Reuben's Train) or Old Joe Clark just buy the Deliverance soundtrack (that's the CD that made me want to learn banjo).
Great banjo picking from a true Living Legend.......2000-10-12
I never had listened to any of Mr. Fairchilds Cd's, until I got a copy of Bela Fleck's Cd, 'Tale's from the acoustic planet, the blegrass sessions' and in reading the liner notes, Bela states that Raymond was an influence on his banjo playing and the music on that particular Cd, So I figured I would check out his banjo playing for my self, I have to honestly say, I have never heard anyone play so fast and clean, it is NO wonder Bela cites this man as an influence. The only reason I did not give this Cd a 5 star rating, is that the banjo tends to get lost in the mix, It would have been nicer if the banjo was a little louder in the mix, Looks like this coming out on a major label like Universal Music, the quality could have been better, but still great Banjo music from an oustanding talent. A new fan indeed.
