About the Artist
Big Red G is the most recent band effort of singer/songwriter/guitarist Carter Smolik. The group focuses the folk-rock compositions of Smolik into taut three-minute pop-rock gems, alternately energetic and atmospheric.

Smolik has been involved in writing and recording his original compositions for ten years, starting with his tenure in the St. Louis band Quada Wuada and continuing through his time at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, where he assembled the first lineup of Big Red G as an acoustic trio. After three years as a solo artist, he decided to resurrect Big Red G in an attempt to add more collaborative flavor to the music.

The most recent album, A Questionable Time, provides a template for the group's current performances. But like many organic ensembles, the tracks only serve as starting points for the live performances. Twelve tracks are included on the collection, and they range from anxious meditations to full-bore romps. The variety and energy demonstrated by these tracks makes this an especially compelling disc.

    I've followed the career of Carter Smolik for over a decade now and have heard his songwriting, musicianship, and singing improve every time he hits the studio. "A Questionable Time" continues that trend. If you are ever in the St. Louis or Chicago area and see Big Red G listed in a local paper to perform a show, by all means, check them out. Yell out a favorite tune (whether a Big Red G song or any other song) and they'll probably do a bang up job right there on the spot. Oh yeah, if you like what you hear from Big Red G, check out an excellent songwriter from up in Vermont named Todd Thibaud. You won't be disappointed. Selah!
