A new generation of music lovers deserves to know, understand and appreciate the greatness of Mario Lanza. Five decades after his passing, millions of lovers of "grand voices" still are held in awe by the power, passion and beauty of his voice.

This selection of recordings has a number of fine selections that give a small "flavor" of his fantastic talent and skills. It is a good beginning for someone who wants to know "The American Caruso."

In a professional career that lasted just a bit over ten years Mario Lanza created more memorable recordings, broadcasts, concert perfomances and feature films than any other major vocalist in the classical and pop-jazz music genre. He was a man blessed with arguably the finest tenor voice in recorded music. Fans of Caruso, Pavarotti, Jan Peerce, Placido Domingo or Careras may argue that their tenor interpreted a particular aria better than anyone else but few if any can argue against the sheer beauty, power and emotion of Mario Lanza. He achieved worldwide success too fast and his penchant for the good life: wine, women and good food got the best of him in the end. It is so sad, when one contemplates Lanza's short but brilliant career and what might have been, that he was gone at age 38, an age when some tenors are just beginning to hit their stride. This album is a fine overview of some of his most memorable heavy classics as well as lighter operetta standards and showcases his voice so well. Nearly fifty years have transpired since his untimely death in 1959 and there is yet to appear on the scene a tenor with the power, charisma or sheer beauty of Lanza's voice. I highly recommend this album to the Lanza novice or those just starting their Opera CD collections.

This album has some really splendid songs, and yes, it's a good introduction to the King of the high last notes. I grew up with one of Lanza's albums and more or less learned to sing by singing along with his wonderful warm voice. What good energy he had... and too bad he died so young (sigh). It certainly lifts my spirits to listen to his music again and I hope anyone reading this will take a chance and get to know him too.

I recommend this collection as a good starting point for those interested in this extraordinary tenor. It's not a complete representation of the man by any stretch of the imagination, but it includes a handful of unforgettable recordings that will make newcomers to Lanza sit up in astonishment.

Highlights include the immortal Serenade & Golden Days from The Student Prince, Beloved (from the film version of the Student Prince, and arguably Lanza's best English-language love song), Because You're Mine, If I Loved You, and the stirring Addio Alla Madre from Cavalleria Rusticana. If love songs seem a little over-represented at the expense of arias and (notably) Italian & Neapolitan Songs, then blame BMG for their habitual neglect of Lanza's more serious side. In any event, this is essentially a one-CD version of the three-CD set, The Mario Lanza Collection. All of the renditions are the same as on the earlier CD, as are the sound sources. With the exception of The Student Prince Serenade, most of the selections here have never sounded better.

Be aware, however, that several of the arias are in fact retakes of more familiar versions. Vesti La Giubba, for instance, is an alternate take from Lanza's May 1950 session, and although the tenor is in great voice, the orchestra lets him down on the climactic phrase by moving on before he has finished his High A on the word "infranto". The Flower Song is even more unrestrained than the familiar take - great fun, but not the kind of recording you'd want newcomers to Lanza to hear! (Lanza never quite "nailed" this aria, but his heart was in the right place.) La Donna E Mobile is the familiar 1950 version in the first half, but is replaced by an inferior retake in the second half, followed by an edited-in High B ending (on "pensier") from the original recording!

The only truly bad recording is the inexplicably popular With A Song In My Heart. Lanza is unfocused, and strains his way throughout the piece. Yours Is My Heart Alone is somewhat better, but is easily surpassed by the tenor's 1956 recording with the conductor Henri Rene (and currently unavailable on CD).

The "Greatest Hits" are here: the million-selling Be My Love, Loveliest Night of The Year and the aforementioned Because You're Mine. I have to confess to an aversion to the first two - Lanza was often a far better singer than these recordings suggest - but most fans, I'm sure, will continue to cherish them. Besides, what tenor since Lanza has ever sung Be My Love without straining his way through the wretched thing and then fudging the High C at the end? Lanza made it his own, and to be fair to the song, it is actually a very difficult piece to pull off, as Messrs Domingo, Carreras and Leech will no doubt attest. But that was also one of Lanza's most under-appreciated strengths - he made everything sound so easy. Listeners accustomed to the laborious efforts of most present-day tenors will be astounded by the freshness, ease, and sheer bravado of these performances.

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

    Our daughter is a 4th year teacher who puts her whole heart into teaching, but dreads being observed. The song on this CD made her cry because it expressed just how she feels- observers tell her she is a remarkable teacher, but she is sure they will say she's no good!
    We knew she would like this CD as she raved over the first one.

    You don't have to be a teacher to enjoy this album. We all have classroom memories that will be stirred by the selections. We have teachers than have inspired us; we perhaps have even known our own "Bill, the janitor." The vocal quality is superb; the sound quality is excellent. This is probably the best gift you could give to a teacher, or to anyone who loves kids. If you buy one as a gift for your favorite teacher, just make sure you have one to keep for yourself.

And if you know a teacher and are searching for a gift that will be most appreciated, this is it.

    Contrary to the bitter reviewer below, I find these collected perormances by Claudio Arrau to be wonderful. His tone and poetic intrepretation are on full display; something that "music lovers" will take full note of. His Debussy is the best!! The three editions of the series are great, and I advise all readers to avoid jaded and biased reviews. i.e. below

    This set is truly a mixed bag. The Chopin Preludes are generally unsatisfactory; at best rather boring, with little invention (although his tone shines through admirably), at worst stodgy and choked. The crowning glory of the record is his rendition of Vallee d'Obermann; the colours, tone and sense of line here are remarkable and it is perfectly organised. The Debussy is not bad - the lack of ideas is compensated for by the man's exceptional richness of tone. When one listens to the Schubert Moments Musicaux as recorded by the aged Arrau, it is difficult to see why Philips continued recording with him. The reading is staid, turgid and plodding, with dreadfully mannered phrasing and articulation. Again, his tone almost comes to the rescue, but it's fighting a lost cause; these performances are nausea inducing and worthy of mockery - they must be avoided at all costs, especially since there are thousands of other superb versions (Richter, for example). If nothing else, they will make you laugh.

    This CD is an excellent blend of tasteful jazz and soaring vocals. Christopher Carl (one of theatre's most talented singers) and Brian Green (another awesome singer) collaborate to produce an exceptional CD. Stand-out songs include 'Dreamscape', 'Seasons of Love', Christopher Carl's hauntingly beautiful "Music of the Night" and Brian Green's exuberent "Truly Human." If you are in search of good music, I strongly recommend this CD. These two young men deserve the best, their voices ARE the best!

    I love this CD. It has all the great Mario Lanza songs--"Be My Love," "Because," "The Loveliest Night of the Year," and many others. What a voice! Powerful, emotional, and, as I read somewhere, it's a voice that, no matter what ups and downs Mario had in his career and his personal life, never lost that edge, that passion, that intensity, that were so much a part of his
    personality. I have spent many hours listeng to what has become one of my favorite CDs.

    The chief problem with the majority of Lanza releases on BMG is that they are, at best, a hodgepodge of the tenor's career. Seldom is any logic applied to the programming. A case in point is this CD.

    Lanza excelled in three genres: Neapolitan Songs; Songs of Love and Celebration; and Operatic Arias. If only BMG could be persuaded to release carefully compiled collections in each genre (as they do with Caruso, for example) rather than lumping pop songs next to arias! Such practices only undermine Lanza's credibility with the general public; after all, who but the diehard fans will buy such collections?

    The Legendary Tenor highlights all that is wrong with BMG's sloppy approach to Lanza. A mere two arias have been selected, both of which Lanza recorded better versions of elsewhere. The love songs generally reinforce the misleading impression that Lanza was purely a singer of schmaltz; missing are his masterpieces in this genre such as Serenade from the Student Prince (instead we have the title song from the movie Serenade - one of the low points on this CD). The Neapolitan songs are limited to just one outstanding example - Torna a Surriento - and the tenor's badly sung Marechiare from his Albert Hall concert of 1958 has been chosen over his far superior 1951 studio effort. (Evidently BMG intended the studio version, as it is erroneously listed in the contents.)

    On the plus side, O Sole Mio, Granada and Mattinata have never sounded better. Ditto Only a Rose and One Alone from Lanza's final recording sessions. There are also a number of pleasant recordings (A Kiss, Because, the ubiquitous Be My Love, and an exciting Because You're Mine from the aforementioned Albert Hall concert).

    But there is far more to Lanza than this collection would indicate. Lanza had an extraordinary vocal gift: a tenor voice with a velvety, baritonal fullness, exceptional range, a perfectly placed top and "a timbre to die for", as one reviewer has noted. As if this wasn't enough, Lanza possessed an innate musicality, perfect diction, and a superb sense of phrasing. It is a great shame that BMG chose, for their first Lanza release on CD, to neglect the great recordings from the tenor's legacy.

    What are the great recordings? You may well ask. In this reviewer's opinion, the arias Che Gelida Manina from La Boheme, Un di all'azzurro spazio from Andrea Chenier, M'appari from Martha, E lucevan le stelle & Recondita Armonia from Tosca, Questa o Quella from Rigoletto, the Otello Monologue and Finale from Otello, and Vesti la Giubba from the soundtrack of For the First Time (available on video) represent the pinnacle of Lanza's operatic achievement. The Neapolitan songs are scattered throughout his CDs, but his best collection is the Mario! Lanza At His Best (see my review if you're interested) and the Love Songs are well represented on The Student Prince and When Day is Done CD collections.

    Conclusion: buy this CD if you're looking for a pleasant, albeit unrepresentative, sampling of Lanza; serious vocal admirers should look elsewhere among the tenor's releases. And one final note: ignore the assertion by the writer of the liner notes regarding Lanza's "serious vocal problems." It simply isn't true. Lanza may have been an erratic singer at times, but the reviewer seems to be confusing Lanza's declining health with non-existent vocal problems.

    I first became a fan of Mario Lanza as a child, (though I didn't know it then), hearing my mother play his music so often in the 1950's. I think something told me even then that his was a very special voice. As a young adult, I eventually matched that unmistakable voice with the handsome face, when his movies appeared on T.V. occasionally, and later still, I purchased my own copies of all 7 films and some of his recordings, which I still enjoy today. My latest acquisition is "42 Great Performances", which I originally bought because it had the most songs & arias I could find and at a great price!! I think it is still an excellent value, because it has 21 popular songs, in English (except Granada), and an equal number - 21 operatic arias, all in Italian - on this 2-disc CD set.

    I think the low price of this beautiful collection may be, as I realized upon playing it the first time, that a few of the operatic arias on the first disc are presented out of order of the track list. This starts with #7 which says "A Stranger in My Arms", clearly out of place among the Italian arias, and in fact, is not there. So the next few are out of order, until #10 when one NOT listed is included, "Una Furtiva Lagrima", then after that they are all correct. There is no problem like this on the 2nd CD in the set. This wasn't a problem for us, as we would much rather have "Una Furtiva Lagrima" than that other unknown song!

    The important thing is hearing Mario's supremely gorgeous voice, as he sings song after song in all their splendor. He has a very rich, warm baritone-tenor voice, or spinto tenor, with high notes that are up there with the best tenors of the world! His Italian diction is impeccable too, due to his background with the language growing up in Philadelphia. Even his Neopolitan dialect diction on those songs here is excellent, which is no easy feat. For example, Andrea Bocelli, who is from the area of Toscano (Tuscany) in Italy, really has quite a strong Toscano accent which distracts a bit when he sings Neopolitan songs. Mario Lanza is a natural in English, Italian & Neopolitan dialect.

    Besides Mario's powerful tenor when singing operatic arias, I love his beautiful mezza-voce, which is both sweet and caressing. You'll hear this especially on Disc 2, in most of the popular songs & ballads, but also on Disc 1,(the Italian disc) when he sings such lovely songs as "A Vucchella", "Mattinata", and Parlami D'Amore, Mariu`", 3 of my FAVORITE Italian love songs. I also love "Cuore 'n Grato", "O Sole Mio", as well as all the opera highlights, in particular the three from La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, and I Pagliacci. Both discs have so much to enjoy, from religious songs like the "Lord's Prayer" and "Ave Maria" to wonderful love songs, like "If, "The Loveliest Night of the Year", "They Didn't Believe Me", and "Be My Love", one of Mario's biggest hits. There are too many to mention - I even grew fond of some of the lessor known songs like, "A Kiss" and "Thine Alone". There are even a couple lively fun songs - "Cosi Cosa" and "Funiculi-Funicula , interestingly sung in English! I do prefer the Italian versions though.

    Mario has a very distinctive voice, both very powerful as well as tender, and the great versatility needed to sing equally well opera as well as these popular songs, as you will see. The other thing you should know is that many of the songs are from live recordings, so there is applause at the beginning & endings of many. But when you hear this album set, you'll know what the applause is all about!! Mario Lanza's voice is as relevant today as it was in his prime in the late 40's, and 50's. Because of his ease with both English and Italian, and the natural sound of his voice, it outshined even many big opera stars of the times, who didn't sing popular song as well. I highly recommend this set of Cds, and most other recordings of Mario Lanza you can find on Amazon or anywhere!
