Either you get it or you don't.......2006-08-21
Donna the Buffalo is a great example of a whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Jeb Puryear's winding guitar lines are unremarkable if you listen too closely, but are perfect sonic accents when you let it be part of the whole. Puryear's nasally, laid-back voice, with its lazy enunciation, lackadaisical intonation, and limited range, is the perfect foil to Tara Nevins' chirpy voice; an entire album of either voice might become tiring, but alternating their warm voices gives each one the opportunity to be welcomed back like an old friend. The relentlessly positive outlook of the lyrics, with their hippy-dippy platitudes of toleration and acceptance, are set in such catchy, sometimes sumptuous, melodies that the cumulative effect is uplifting. All the parts fit together into a wonderful illustration of the pantheist universe that seems to be the wellspring of every song.
That said, how is this album? It doesn't matter. I can't see anyone settling for one Donna the Buffalo album. If you like their feel-good, 'the world is one' message, and their mix of Appalachian, reggae, zydeco, and rock, then you'll want all their albums; they're all the same. If you don't get what they're about, then one album will be too many.
Fun CD from a Fun Band.......2003-12-22
Tara Nevins voice, plus a talented multi-instrumentalist, vocalist band make this CD a great listen. Even better are their
many concerts. I saw them in Charlottesville, VA in November 2000, and they were at their best. They were at anyone's best.
Sounds a bit like Grateful Dead meets 10,000 Maniacs (which I think was an actual billing about 10-15 yrs ago!)
Good Stuff.......2003-09-24
This album makes me feel good. The only reason I dont give it 5 stars is that I would love to hear Tara Nevins sing all the songs. The others do very good, but I love her voice and her song writng.Don't compare it to the Grateful Dead or the String Cheese Incedent. Love it for its own merits.
Greatest. Album. Ever........2003-08-02
This album is ridiculously good!
Every song is a masterpiece. This album will keep you rockin' from the first song to the last.
I strongly recommend that you check out this album, and also see Donna the Buffalo in concert.
They will blow you away!
Herd Festival?.......2001-05-24
It's hard to criticize a band whose songs are as obviously heartfelt as Donna The Buffalo's--an amalgam of country, zydeco and roots rock. There is some great guitar playing, moments of grandeur, a handful of mildly entertaining songs, and quite a lot of filler. I haven't decided if "Funky Side" is the catchiest song I've heard in a while, or the most annoying. A lot of the songs (Funky Side, for example) suffer from repetition---after the first 2 minutes you've pretty much heard the whole song. "Each & Every Direction" is a good song to groove to, but there's not much of a melody. Not bad overall...but hardly overwhelming. To be fair, I can envision myself buying another Donna The Buffalo CD. It's just not something I would listen to a lot.

Seven years and two Mike Scott solo albums since the Waterboys' previous album, Scott's decision to resuscitate the name of the band that made him famous feels like the decision of a man who is determined to stop running from something at which he excels. The second of his solo albums, 1998's Still Burning, was infused with the epic scope that had characterized the Waterboys at their best; A Rock in the Weary Land feels like a logical progression. There is little trace of the Irish-folk influence that occupied Scott for much of the early 1990s; his is what Scott calls "the big music"--surging rock ballads infused with Zeppelinesque drums, backing choirs, strings, and what sounds like dozens of guitars. At its peaks, as on the title track and "We Are Jonah," it is vintage Waterboys, which is to say it's altogether exhilarating. --Andrew Mueller

Album Details
Mike Scott Has Reassembled a New Band of Players, Realizing that Trying to Make it on his Own was Just Not Gaining the Recognition that the Name Waterboys Already Invoked. The Results on this Album Are Stellar, with a New Focus, Direction and Energy...as Well as a New Label. The Songs Are Some of the Best Scott Has Yet Written, Deeply Poetic and Intricate. The New Band Wowed the Crowd at the 2000 Glastonbury Festival and have Been Garnering Raves all Over Europe. A Most Welcome Return.

Making music outside the box.......2005-07-23
I've read the negative comments regarding this cd and it seems to me that most of the reviewers like Mike Scott/The Waterboys but dislike this album because it went in an unexpected direction. Just as Dylan disappointed some of his core audience by "going electric," "going country," and "going gospel," Mr. Scott seems quite willing to follow his Muse without allowing audience expectations to box him in. To be truthful, when I first bought this cd I listened to it once and abandoned it for over a year. Now, it's one of my favorites. I think a person's response to this music is more a reflection of the listener than the quality of the music-and I don't mean that in a negative sense. This is certainly the darkest Waterboys release to date (as of July 2005), and understandably not to everyone's taste. Kudos to Mr. Scott for following his Muse wherever she leads!
He's not back, He's still here.......2002-01-26
Another entry in Mike Scott's musical journey. He's never been gone, he's just changed. I don't view this as a return to anything, but another glorious incarnation of his vision.
Ignore the whining about distortion, just turn it up loud and enjoy the music that was made as Mike intended it to be. Think about what the lyrics are saying and you'll perhaps realize why it sounds that way.
The concerts supporting this cd have been filled with incredible energy. If you get the chance, go.
Also look for "Too Close to Heaven". It's part two of Fisherman's Blues and contains music from those sessions.
Watch for the remastered rerelease of The Waterboys and This is the Sea with new tracks coming in mid 2002.
Disappointing.......2001-09-27
This album catches the Waterboys trying to be what they are not (or, at least, have not been until this effort) -- derivative. Though the lyrics are adequate, the songwriting is subpar. This is exacerbated by, as another critic noted, the poor production and "special" effects. The result is a cluttered mess that isn't worth the struggle of dozens of listenings (at least not yet). This comes from a long time Waterboys and Mike Scott fan, who melted the plastic many years ago on singles like, "Church not made with Hands," "Spirit," "When will we be Married?", and "Be my Enemy," and, more recent devotion to Scott's solo, Christian-centered, "Bring 'em all In."
Stonkin stuff.......2001-07-07
This is it! Not just for old 80's Waterboys fans - this is just great loud messy stuff that beats anything out today. Lots of heavy noise swirls around good solid songwriting. Don't miss this one chilluns!!
Overproduced, that's all.......2001-06-04
I am also one of those whose life was changed by Mike Scott--and specifically by "This is the Sea," which is a truly amazing album (buy it on import vinyl if you can). This new one is also really good, but I so wish Mike hadn't felt such a need to seem 'relevant'and cutting edge--he almost ruined the production with the annoying vocal effects.(I saw the NYC show, which was great--stripped of the overproduction, the songs could breathe a little more.) By the way, if you only know the Waterboys from "Fisherman's Blues" I also highly recommend "Live Adventures," "This is the Sea," "Pagan Place" and the solo albums--just don't buy "Dream Harder," which remains the black hole in Scott's career.

Customer Reviews:
Horrendous sound quality and production!.......2005-06-16
Tough love from a major Waterboys fan: Will someone please steal the master tapes, pro-tools, etc. of this CD from Mike Scott and remix it! It is harshly distorted--musically and vocally, which ruins the bulk of the songs. Whoever introduced Mike Scott to singing through a micro-synth should get the death penalty. And the pronounced Irish affectations in his voice have reached their preposterous zenith. Half the songs on here would be decent if they were stripped down to basics and cut shorter by 3 minutes (not every coda is worthy of Hey Jude treatment). If you are a new fan, stick with Mike Scott's Still Burning and the Waterboy's first 4 CD's. This is for aural masochists only!
The genius morphs into a retard.......2004-10-31
I'm quite sickened by the rave reviews of this horrendous CD. The once brilliant musician and poet named Mike Scott somehow lost it past age 30 and couldn't produce a worthly album if his life depended on it. "A Pagan Place", "This is the Sea", and "Fisherman's Blues" are among the best albums released by any band ever. However, on this album Scott has been reduced to releasing silly creampuff songs that would fit well on a Loverboy or Outfield album. Even the lyrics are sickening. I tried listening to this CD 10 times and then, after realizing I could no longer stomach it anymore, threw it in the trash where it belongs.
Music for a Weary Land.......2004-04-24
The highly charged songs on this cd go beyond what The Waterboys have presented in the past-at least in their studio work. An interview promo cd was released with Mike Scott discussing his experiences and the making of the cd. While it's not for everyone (those who want to pigeonhole Scott into "This is the Sea" or "Fisherman's Blues" mode may not like it, those of us who "get it" and richly rewarded.
Brilliant Songwriting under the annoying production.......2002-12-18
Say Mike Scott at First Avenue supporting this album. The
songs were awesome but the album's production is truly annoying!!
Dream Harder!.......2002-07-09
Come on Mike, stop taking yourself into places you know you should not go. Go into the wild places where you play your heart out with your friends. Fisherman's Blues and This is The Sea places. Or, maybe just you and a guy on fiddle. Kinda like Nebraska from a Scottish perspective. Something from the spirit and the darkness. Where redemption can spring forth and change us all.
Peace.
