There seem to be two major camps of U2 fans now: Those who dig the early albums (good and sensible people), and those who only like the ones from the '90s, putting everything previous down as "classic rock." But U2 only became a classic rock sort of band in 1984, with The Unforgettable Fire. The real early stuff, from '80 to '83, still comes off as edgy--and it's comparatively ignored. Here's a sampler: Under a Blood Red Sky is from a U.S. tour (1983's) in which U2 still thought of itself as a hungry little band from Ireland--and draws (fairly wisely) from the band's first three albums. There's nary a misstep on the entire disc, although it could stand a few more tracks. --Gavin McNett

Twisting, turning.......2007-08-02
I still have my original cassette tape of this--my very first U2 purchase. I adored it, and I adore it, still. I realize one of the tracks isn't exactly "live" as they are all labeled, but no matter. The passion and strength of the songs on this CD stand. It's brilliant!
Am I imagining this or is the CD missing something?.......2007-07-16
I wore the vinyl out in college so I replaced it with a CD copy a couple of years back. I just listened to it and I believe the audio CD is missing a portion from "Electric Co." There's a slow breakdown in the middle of the song - I could swear that my vinyl contained a part where Bono is adlibbing "Send in the Clowns". There's a clumsy edit on the CD on this part (it's very abrupt) which leads me to believe my memory isn't as bad as I rhought. Anyone else with this memory?
Agree about the repackaging.......2007-03-31
I'd take it further and have a box set from the first 3 tours, include "Under a Blood Red Sky" video UNCUT with U2 Commentary (it's long overdue), US Festival, and the TV appearances from 1978-1983.
I have noticed U2 starting to go backwards in putting their live shows on DVD. We've got Popmart now, but Zoo TV, the 1988 windup show of the Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum tour, the Unforgettable Fire live performances (making of is part of "Go Home") and this one still have yet to be released. It is interesting to see how they've gone through a lot of changes as live performers.
It might have to be something similar to what Neil Young and KISS are planning, a multidisc retrospective.
A good look at the first three album.......2007-03-25
This album contains the best from U2 from the three first album.
The choice of song is quite good and the songs are played with energy by the band. The highlight are "11 oclock Tick Tock", "Sunday bloody Sunday", "New year's day" and "40"
It's U2's early years... enuff said!.......2007-03-09
Classic U2 - the band that continually gets better with every album released. My only 'gripe' with this one is the poorer "live" recording quality of the time.

Condescending, insulting, and just plain bad.......2007-07-14
What's this? Bob Dylan, arguably the greatest lyricist of our time, writing NURSERY RHYMES? Please, spare us! This is an example of my "Dylan Conundrum": His successes are spectacular, but his failures are equally so. Obviously Dylan suddenly was put under the impression that his fans were mostly of the preschool set: I mean, a four-year-old may find Wiggle Wiggle, the title song, 2x2 or Cat's in the Well amusing, but I do NOT. The lyrics are a big problem of this album: the semi-profound ones are painful (Born in Time, TV Talkin' Song), and the love songs are unoriginal at best and disgraceful at worst (God Knows, Unbelievable, 10,000 Men). Musically the melodies are rudimentary, but most Dylan melodies are (even on his classics) so that's not real reason to complain. The thing to complain about are the aforementioned lyrics, and all the wasted star power: Slash, George Harrison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Elton John, David Crosby and longtime associate Al Kooper are all very talented folks whose instrumental presence should lift this above the level of pure misery, but they unfortunately can't. Okay, so Handy Dandy's actually pretty good by this album's standards (read: merely decent), but that's one song of ten. A pathetic, miserable excuse for a record that just may be worse than Down in the Groove, Knocked Out Loaded, Self-Portrait and Empire Burlesque. There is plenty of tremendous Dylan out there - Freewheelin', The Times They Are a-Changin', Another Side of, Brining it All Back Home, Highway Sixty-One Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, Blood on the Tracks, Infidels, Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times, etc. This isn't worth it.
almost great dylan. excellent music and vocals. silly lyrics.......2007-04-23
great tunes, excellent vocal performance, bizzarre (and or) silly lyrics. that sounds like a description of many great bob dylan albums. so then, what's not to love about this one? it fits the same description. if the silly lyrics bother you, forget them. check out the music and vocals instead. they're excellent. this underrated cd is both lively and fresh sounding. and somewhat catchy. it's much better than most of his 1980s output. ardent dylan fans should at least check it out. i love it. 4 and 1/2 stars.
Dylan's Worst Album.......2007-04-01
His alimony payments must have been due, or something. Despite guest appearances by the likes of Elton John and George Harrison, this album never gets off the ground. The songwriting is the worst of Dylan's long and fabled career. (The single was called "Wiggle Wiggle," for God's sake!) Consistently lackluster performances fail to inject any energy into what is worse-than-mediocre material to begin with. In my opinion, there are only two reasons to actually own this horrendous album: either because you are a fanatical Dylan completist (I am), or because you're morbidly curious to see just how far a great singer/songwriter can fall in an off-year. Dylan promises that the much-anticipated second volume of his memoir, "Chronicles," will deal in part with the sessions at which this travesty was recorded. I can't wait to hear his excuse for such an unmitigated disaster.
Poor Bob, victim of himself!.......2007-01-23
Awful. I mean, really awful...and I liked "Self Portrait" because you knew Dylan was just trying to have some fun with his image. This album is just a disaster. The lyrics are OK on most songs (I've seen worse by Dylan), but the music is unexciting, not very creative, and downright embarrassing on some tracks. Why, oh, why did you have to make an album like this, Bob? Such talented people at your disposal for these sessions, and you threw it away on garbage arrangements. Shameful. Really sad.
Lost and found under the red sky.......2006-06-28
I had lost track of Bob Dylan after his 80s gospel albums (which I loved and still do) until my son tunneled his way up through the Beatles to Dylan in his 2nd-generation interest in the music I had listened to 20--OK 30 years ago.
Then I got a 20GB iPOD and started loading it up with all the music I had, and all the music he had, and I was back onto Dylan. Then I bought Love and Theft (yes I know, that's a different album than I'm reviewing here, but I'll get there, really!) and after listening once put it away. Dylan had COMPLETELY LOST HIS VOICE!!! How could he put this out?
Then I went with my son to a Bob Dylan concert in May of this year. Yep same thing, NO VOICE AT ALL--but it worked!! He had a tight well-rehearsed band behind him, and he laid down 90 minutes of solid classics. His version of "Masters of War" left shivers running down my spine.
So now I get it. He can no longer sing like Bob Dylan 20 years ago, but he uses his new voice to sing the old songs new again. I went back to Love and Theft, and found several great gems there.
Then I bought Under the Red Sky. I find this one of Dylan's best albums, with great backing musicians (you've already read the other reviews, you know their names)--and his lyrics are so many layers deep I keep listening for more.
I approach Dylan's lyrics from a Christian worldview, and from my view, as both a converted and an unconverted Jew, Dylan's best songs have always been about salvation (what else could you find on Highway 61?). So where other reviewers here hear nursery rhymes or nothing good at all, I hear great depth of spiritual insight.
"Wiggle wiggle wiggle" is about man's attempt to justify his sin while trying to wiggle away from its consequences. I don't know, maybe its nothing more than a silly song, but I also make this connection in justification of my interpretation: Slash from Guns N Roses plays the lead on this song, which mines the same vein as "Welcome to the Jungle."
"Unbelievable" is about the desperate loneliness of life being nothing more than the satisfaction of every desire and lust and how empty and "unbelievable" it is that people will live for just that!
"Handy Dandy" could be about Ronald Reagan as others here claim, but I picture a celebrity surrounded by his "posse" and afraid to live without them or the mansion on a hill where he can hide in fear from the world he's afraid of (even though he protests too much his fearlessness).
"God Knows" is an awesome hymn to the presence and peace of God in a life and a world no one can understand or control. In case we didn't get the message of the only source of peace, 'Born in time" follows up: "You don't get nothing you don't deserve, where we were born in time"--no you don't, but from 2000 years ago, when HE was born in time, we get what we don't deserve, God's grace that saves and keeps us still today in our born-in time.
Are these interpretations a stretch? Probably. Am I completely insane? Maybe. But regardless of what Dylan may say now, I believe he is a committed Christian AND a committed Jew. His depth of genius needs no bounds of orthodoxy like the rest of us who rely on well-worn pathways to make sense of our most heartfelt spiritual or philosophical thoughts. The Apostle Paul writes of the goal of Christians to have the "mind of Christ." Dylan has it, and he gets it!

Great accompaniment to Vheissu.......2007-03-25
The first two tracks on this EP are amazing B-Sides to the album Vheissu, that for the life of me I can't figure why they were left off in the first place. They are brilliant. Also the following acoustic versions of three songs give them a new light, especially the very stripped down "Under a Killing Moon". This is a definite recommendation to fans of Thrice.
I know what lies beneath..........2007-02-22
I had already downloaded the songs on this record before it came out, but still bought it regardless.
If you're a diehard Thrice fan. This is a "must have".
Definitely worth it.......2006-04-23
This EP contains two really good B-sides from Vheissu (Flags of Dawn and The Weight of Glory) and live versions of Red Sky, Under A Killing Moon, Of Dust and Nations, and For Miles. The live versions are softer renditions of these songs, and it really changes the dynamic of the songs and I think Dustin does a fantastic job on them.
As for the two B-Sides, I really don't understand why they weren't put on the album. Thrice is my favorite band and Vheissu is their best album talent-wise, but there are a few songs on there I would easily trade for these two. Great songs.
If you've liked any of the Thrice albums, especially Vheissu, this is definitely an ideal pick up for you. If you've been a fan all along, this is a no-brainer.
Must have for any Thrice fan.......2006-04-20
Only 6 songs, but it's great. I can't believe "Flags of Dawn" and "Weight of Glory" where kept off of Vheissu - they are absolutely incredible songs.
The other 4 songs aren't new, but they ARE new versions of them. The only one I had heard before was "Of Dust and Nations," which was from AOL Sessions. The rest are awesome acoustic versions of the originals. "Under Killing Moon" was especially interesting to hear since the original is so heavy.
Maybe it will be released in the US soon so you can avoid the hefty import price-tag. However, die-hards shouldn't have a problem shelling out the cash for it. If you love Thrice, its worth it.

Album Description
Wøllo's latest exploration into the creative possibilities of the guitar is rich with texture and melody, highly sculpted and detailed - a pulsing vibrant and atmospherically three-dimentional experience. Influenced by his travels to the North American Southwest, Wøllo manifests the natural wonders of the area through his instrument, painting profound vistas with many types of acoustic, electric, electronic, and classical guitar voices.
Erik Wollo has continually reached the top of prominent music critics' Best Of The Year lists, including Amazon's Best New Age Album for 2003 (Emotional Landscapes).
Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining music........2007-03-10
I really enjoy this CD. I usually don't get new music, in fear of getting something I am bored with, but if you liked Wollo's Wind Journey, and Guitar Nova, you will like this as well.
As Good As It Gets.......2006-10-13
Definitely my favorite Erik Wollo album, which says a lot considering his incredible discography. The man really knows his stuff, coming from an electronic/ambient background and translating that knowledge into a fantastic combination of acoustic guitars and various organic-sounding (though often electronic) instruments. Very relaxing and tasteful, fit for any time of day, but especially good at night in a quiet room. This receives my highest recommendation.
Put on your headset amd enjoy!.......2005-02-27
Just amazingly clear and deep sound rich guitar melodies. Eric Wollo's work is absolutely inspiring, and very creative!
An enchanting journey.......2004-11-05
Simply put, this album is stunning. It is melodic and poignant, and so rich in depth and texture. I found myself dreaming of a place where the canyons run still and deep, and the sky goes on forever. I think I'll linger there for a while...

Album Description
Tokyo's Mono is a peculiar group. While most bands offer up their sincerest and most genuine recordings in their infancy and spend the rest of their careers trying desperately to rediscover their youthful energy, Mono's trajectory has been quite the opposite. This flourish of hopeful creativity was captured by Steve Albini in the form of the eight pieces that make up their third album Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined. More lush and orchestral than previous recordings, the album couples an overall slow-melting ambience with a thunderous drive that reaches far greater heights than the band's earlier work.
Customer Reviews:
immerse yourself in this.......2006-05-19
listen to it straight through, all at once. remember what a music experience used to be. let them take you somewhere new. let it build. there is magic here. if you have an adventurous spirit or seek something new, soulful and slightly dangerous, then please give this a try. there is yet hope for guitar bands. but think of the creative explorations of 'godspeed you black emperor' rather than the lame redundancy of 'lynyrd skynyrd'.
beautiful music sadly mistaken for another band, yet brilliant...........2006-03-26
Obviously, there are 2 bands called Mono. This one is the one that creates brilliant pieces of music that could be best described as among the post-rock movement. You can hear a lot of Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai in these recordings, but Mono has imprinted it's own signature self into the music so that it explores other realms of music rather than dwell in the genre of its influences. The cello is a great aid to adding a serene flow to the already smooth, beautiful pieces of music.
So listen to "16.12", "Halcyon (Beautiful Days)", and "Lost Snow" and you won't be dissapointed. Serene, lush, instrumental rock that needs to be heard to be understood.
What is this? .......2006-01-26
How could Formica Blues be so good and Walking Cloud so bad? The first two tracks sounded like trying to listen to music standing next to a moving train. The symbols are intolerable. Then the third track sounded pretty good until they started blasting without warning right in the middle of the tune. I tried listening to the fourth tune, gave up a ejected the CD.
They truly sound like a high school band in a garage trying to learn to play.
the soft - loud confusion.......2005-09-19
hello all.
i feel that 'walking cloud' is a very beautiful record, and deserves to be heard by many in its entirety. the sound-bites on amazon do not really do this record justice. a few seconds of 'halcyon' cannot truly tell the beauty of that song.
concerning what some other people have mentioned regarding this album, and some other records whose sound is akin to Mono's (explosions, godspeed, mogway, etc.), i have to say that to speak of the 'soft-loud-soft'ness of these records seems very superficial to me. yes, all these albums have their peaks & valleys if you will, but these seem to me to be intrinsic in the 'story-telling' of each record. to me it is very much like a baring of the soul, revealing all the good-bad, light-dark, the beautiful and the ugly.
in his 'decline of the west', oswald spengler wrote regarding classical music that the people of this time turned to instrumental music so that 'they might better express their relationship with God'. it seems that this is happening all over again with musicians who fall under the dubious umbrella of 'post-rock'. all seem to be trying to better express their relationship, perhaps not with god, but with themselves, no? personally, it does seem to me that their is something akin to religious ecstacy in some of these recordings, but this would be better left undiscussed, as i do not know any of these musicians personally.
this all being said, 'walking cloud' is a rather beautiful record, and i look forward to more releases from these very talented & beautiful people.
don't concentrate on anything.......2005-09-01
yes, it's repetitive. that's been said. listening in the record store bored me to tears until i started doing something else. but this *is* good music for studying.. great for drawing - that's a reccommendation. i can't imagine setting them apart from Mogwai, though, especially in terms of what happens melodically as well as a similar approach to sonics and engineering in general, anyway...
yes, listen to tracks before you get it. get a few. play them and do something else. see how you feel.

oui oui.......2007-06-21
everyone who has ever explored Swedish death metal has At the Gates' _Slaughter of the Soul_, or at least had a metal-loving friend play it for them. that's a bloody good metal album! and rightly considered a classic. yet surprisingly the band's most startling and unique release is their obscure debut, _the red in the sky is ours_.
first i want to say that if you have read negative reviews of this album ignore them completely. I think there is something of a cop-out in saying, as some critics have, that this is some kind of "Entombed clone" or that it's immature. At the Gates is possessed of an impetuous musical ambition of the sort usually only found in the youngest metal bands, but they have crazy chops and progressive songwriting skills beyond their age. A valid comparison would be the earlier Dark Tranquillity albums - fast and tremolo-y, with an explicit melodic focus -- but at the same time being thrashier & deathier, with more of a tech/progmetal angle, and a violin. Jespers the violinist contributes a unique quality to about half the songs, fr'example with florid solos ("The Season to Come") and lamentful leads during an ultra-melodic metal fadeout ("Windows"), and fast trills with galloping double-bass and dual guitar leads ("Neverwhere"). Very unusual, and it is implemented with faultless taste. The songs are longer on average than their later tracks, with movement-like structures, spastic time-changes, and lacking the typical metal motivic progression. The riffs are completely deranged, the dual guitar playing evil and tight, and the drumming some of the most complex and impressive in the style. it may sound incoherent at first, which is perhaps why many reviewers dislike this album when compared to their strike-n-recoil tracks on later discs. The variety is also remarkable. When you hear songs like "Claws of Laughter Dead" (sic) and "Neverwhere" you'll at times think you were hearing something like Atheist; when you hear "Within" you'll wonder why this album isn't revered in underground prog-metal circles; and when you hear the short, weird "The Scar", with its unsettling whispers and electronically processed dual guitar constructions, you'll feel a shiver pass through your flesh. The production would be dated out of context, but most of the early albums of this style sounded like this so it's basically idiomatic and suits it rather well. If you are looking for some of the best, "old style" of Gothenburg metal then don't forget to pick this up with your Dark Tranq and In Flames albums.
An Underrated Gem From A Legendary Band.......2006-11-06
At The Gates is a highly influential band that's basically looked up to by 80% of melodic metal bands nowadays. However, there is more to this band than just "Slaughter Of The Soul". And this will be an insight to their very first full-length, "The Red In The Sky Is Ours".
Released in 1992, this was when At The Gates were a different band from a few years following after. This CD is more dark, technical and brutal than the rest of their works. They laced more death metal into their sound at this time. The CD has insane riffs and melodic leads, and the tempos really make it stand out. Drums are excellent here, especially in "The Red In The Sky Is Ours". It is a real blistering album that deserves to be heard and not to be missed.
AMAZING !!!!!!!!.......2006-05-02
This is great metal in the Swedish early 1990s scene.
Lots tremolo picking, depressive melodies and odd tempo changes, plus full time violin player. And of course ultra depressive screaming, which creates really depressive atmosphere!
This album definetely underrated, and should get more exposure!
Metalheads get it!
SOTS is killer but its a shame that ATG's 1st 2 get ignored.......2004-09-10
Everybody always raves about Slaughter of the Soul, and I guess I can see why, as I was one of those people.... but ATG's first 2 albums, once you let them sink in, are easily ATG's best 2 albums, and not only that but they are 2 of the greatest metal albums of all time. I didn't like this too much upon first listen, and while I love Slaughter of the Soul, I never considered ATG one of my favorite bands. "The Red In The Sky Is Ours" and "With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness" changed that. "The Red In The Sky Is Ours" is certainly ATG's most technical, twisted, and brutal album, but still has loads of excellently used melody and it never falls into "wankery" (bands trying to make music as complex as possible, but sacrifice SONGWRITING and end up making garbage) as it seemed to me upon first listen.
The majority of this album is based on 2 guitars weaving in and out of each other in brilliant fashion. Riffs range from melodic tremolo picking to energetic and "exciting" riffs to very odd and twisted riffs that make you go "???".... The guitar interplay is so deep on this album, there is so much to hear and will have you coming back again and again. The production is very raw and leaves the guitars very thin, but whats important is that they are clear and the production is adequate for an album which requires clarity in each guitar note. Song structures are complex and will be a challenge for the listener early on, but once they begin to settle in the music is all the more rewarding for this.... The arrangements seem so clever and limitless in comparison to the verse-chorus-verse structure of SOTS, as this makes for an unpredictable album where anything goes. Not that there's anything wrong with verse-chorus structuring, but in the end it just seems that the most satisfying music is the more adventurous music. And The Red In The Sky Is Ours is one adventurous disc. Put it on, you will be pummeled immediately by the brutal title track.... So you know what you are in for, and the rest of the album is one hell of a ride.
Favorite tracks: Within, Claws Of Laughter Dead, Neverwhere, City of Screaming Statues
Progressive, prophetic, and blistering.......2004-03-23
I'd heard often enough that this was the definitive ATG work (not surprising; a bands first album is often considered their best) but I wasted too much time before getting it - a shame because it is everything it is said to be and more. For those coming in from the Slaughter of the Soul end of things, this album is the complete opposite. There is less in the fast-tempo department and more room for odd rythms, turnaround patterns and weird time signatures; try tapping your foot to this! Several songs feature an extended violin break; at this time there was a full-time violinist in the band, a breath of fresh air for early 90's metal. Every song is vital and has a life of its own; if you're not yet an At the Gates fan, this is a great place to start.

He did it again!.......2002-01-18
What else is there to say about a Billy Crockett cd? Everyone mentions the excellent guitar playing, but there is more to his work. From the first note, he carries you away to a better, more thoughtful, place. I think I am a better person because of this music. I notice the greatness of being alive. The small things in life mean so much and he won't let you drift mindlessly anymore. "Tune your heart to the birds that fly out on the edge of the deep blue sky..."
The first ten notes of "Come and See" can break any bad mood. This is good medicine! "Song and Dance" is a great guitar tune and melody. "The Wake Up Song" is very reminiscent of "Marketplace", a highlight on his Surprises in Disguises. "Are You" and "Friends at Last" are both heart-filling songs. "Thankful Boys and Girls" is a great message to the kid in all of us. Life is beautiful and we don't deserve it, so appreciate it! Picket fences, puppy noses, shadows and memories. Wow. Those are some good things. How about sugar? Where is sugar? Sugar is not in the song. "Kisses on the mouth" doesn't count. I am thankful for sugar, too.
Buy any of his cds and I guarantee you will buy another one. Actually, Any Starlight Night is my favorite. That or Watermarks is the place I would suggest you start. This cd is sweet, but more eclectic than Starlight or Watermarks. Billy was my musical hero from the moment I heard Surprises In Disguises. I'm glad I found him so early on and I wish he was more appreciated. He is more deserving that lots of other "stars".
Thanks Billy!

Album Description
Celtic Music for Guitar by Allan Alexander contains 31 songs transcribed for guitar mostly originating from Ireland and Scotland as well as three charming original pieces written in the Celtic style by Allan. Listen to the haunting melodies of the Irish Harper O'Carolan, take a musical journey with dances that were written more than 400 years ago and experience Celtic traditional music in a solo guitar setting by one of the masters of this musical genre.

For the Aspiring Celtic Guitarist..........2005-08-07
I must admit, this review is of both the CD and the accompanying book of transcriptions. The selection is quite unique, ranging from the renaissance lute manuscripts of Scotland purely traditional (and much more recent-most of the jigs, reels, and airs of today's Celtic music might sound primal, but they date from the late 1700's-early 1800's)tunes such as 'The Butterfly'. Most of the work-about three quarters-is taken from the work of 17th century blind Irish harpist Turlough O'Carolan. O'Carolan's work has a distinctive sound for the most part, equal parts baroque and Irish folk, with a few songs leaning strongly one way or the other. So be warned, this is NOT the Celtic music you would hear from traditional groups such as the Cheiftains or Altan, nor is it classical or baroque in the style prefered by Bream or Williams. It is instead a blend of, to me, the best of both genres, combining the sophistication and delicacy of early classical music with the haunting soulfulness of Celtic music. It is also a glimpse at the earliest known examples of music from Scotland and Ireland, predating the dance numbers that are recorded more today.
As a guitarist, I thoroughly enjoyed working through the book. The selections are all beautiful and impressive to hear, yet many are very, very easy to perform. Most of my playing has been acoustic rock and folk with a flatpick, so I was very pleasantly suprised to find that some of my favorite pieces from the recording were not only within my grasp (after a reasonable amount of practice!) but even primer-like, the notes by the author making each song learned a lesson in technique. The transcriptions are also in tab, which is a big plus for me and I'm sure many others. It IS good to be able to read music, I suppose (I can decipher, myself, but not sight read), but standard notation was not designed for fretted instruments, and anyway, tab was always traditionally used lutes by composers such as J S Bach, anyway, so can even be considered more 'correct' for the guitar. Just be aware that the tunes here are more archaic than what is normally heard. Tony McManus wannabes will have to go elsewhere, I'm afraid.
Excellent........1999-04-04
An incredible recording. The music is rhythmic and driving. The arrangements and original compositions are exciting. This is something for lovers of Celtic music who want some originality while still enjoying the classic celtic melodies.

Boy George's musical-theater debut has been unfairly maligned. Set in the glamorously decadent London nightlife of the early 1980s, the show is unquestionably hampered by a weak book. But Boy George's original score (which is credited to his actual birth name of George O'Dowd) boasts several strong pop songs and generously spread-out tour-de-force numbers among a handful of performers. The plot follows the rise to fame of Boy George (impeccably channeled by Euan Morton) and his interaction with lovers and hangers-on, friends and foes. One of the most striking characters is Australian-born performance artist Leigh Bowery, confusingly played by Boy George and Matt Lucas, who took turns during the London run and who both appear on this cast album (George sings "Everything Taboo," for instance, but Lucas gets the striking, Cabaret-like "Ich Bin Kunst"). Confused yet? Well, that's Taboofor you. But never mind the plot: There's plenty of cool, theatrical tunes on this CD, which is more than you can say about most contemporary shows. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Jolly Good!.......2006-06-16
Boy George may be to blame for the failure of his musical in the United States, though he would rather fault Rosie O'Donnell. Still, critics praised him for his lyrical skills here. There are catchy songs with various gay themes here. I enjoyed it though I've never seen the musical. I think musical fanatics will appreciate having this piece in their collection.
Bravo Boy George!.......2004-05-26
Don't hate me, but I saw the Broadway production five times including closing night. I'm still unclear why this tremendous production did not catch on, it was truly amazing. It's the first time that I've seen a Broadway show more than once. I received my Broadway CD today, as I ordered it the day after the show closed - I understand that it will be available in July, 2004, hopefully sooner in time for the Tonys. The soundtrack CD is absolutely brilliant, completely capturing the fire and energy of the live production. My favorites from the show are still my favorites here, especially Euan Morton's haunting Stranger In This World and his beautiful Pretty Lies; Liz McCartney's unbelievable take on Talk Amongst Yourselves; Guttersnipe (so funny and cute live); I See Through You; Raul Esparza's heartbreaking Petrified plus the opener Freak; Out Of Fashion and the finale, Come In From The Outside. My fingers are crossed that the Tony's are generous to this show and hope Rosie O'Donnell keeps her promise for a return for this show! Get a copy, you won't regret it, even if you are not a Boy George fan, his lyrics and beautiful melodies are his best ever - everything here is eons above so many Broadway shows that run for years. I guess I'll just keep wondering why mass audiences didn't get it, although the show did receive a standing ovation every performance.
holy crapper!.......2004-05-18
well first off, being a huge boy george fan... i was interested in his musical... i bought this cd... and i must admit most of the songs are written well and are catchy.... the most touching song is STRANGER IN THIS WORLD... euan morton's voice is soothing and the lyrics are sad and beautiful... and i recommend this album to all boy fans... although this is the london recording.... (as i patiently wait for the broadway score)... this album is good.... although george only sings on one song its still being rotated in my stereo.... get this album now....
A Very Pleasant Surprise.......2004-04-23
I did not see the Broadway Musical, but I am curious why it failed. I bought the cd just out of curiosity and absolutely love it. The songs are witty and the ballads are especially beautiful. I would highly recommend this cd.
No words to describe this.......2004-04-12
My review is going to be short and i'll get right to the point. Buy the soundtrack. The singers are beyond anything you've ever heard before. Euan Morton, be still my heart. His voice is mesmerizing. The song STRANGER IN THIS WORLD will leave you breathless. Just listen to it and you'll be transfixed, I know I was and am everytime.
