Product Description
Lyle Ritz is well known for his mastery of bass and ukulele, on completely separate and highly successful recording ventures. This is the first time, however, that he has played both uke and bass together on a CD of his own. Here is a chance to fully appreciate Lyle's gift for coaxing the essence of jazz and pop standards out of a limited amount of strings. These masterful arrangements in miniature are a reflection of Lyle's experience, intelligence and, above all, taste. It's all here, the melody, the harmony, the swing, the grace. No frills indeed! A must have for Jazz and ukulele lovers alike!
Customer Reviews:
Great jazz no matter the instrument.......2006-10-09
Any instrument can make beautiful music in the hands of a good musician. Lyle Ritz is a good musician. Therefore he can play any instrument and the music will be good. Ukelele is just a four string guitar, and anything you can do on guitar, you can do on uke, so long as it's on the top 4 strings. This is just plain nice stuff. Melodic, swinging and fun to listen to. A great soft jazz album
Lyle rocks the uke.......2006-08-18
I found this disc while doing research to begin playing the ukelele. Lyle's background as a studio musician gives him complete command of the ukulele and the bass. It's fantastic what delightful sounds he can extract from them here. This disc helped me decide to purchase a ukulele for myself, and serves as an inspiration to keep practicing.

Bette Rocks!.......2006-03-14
I am glad they finally put this and 'Broken Blossom' on cd. They prove that Bette can stray from the path and come out smelling like 'The Rose' that she is.
Her cover of 'Beast of Burden' by the Stones is delectable. The video was excellent and got lots of airplay but, alas, the song didn't make it to the charts. Neither did any of the others here.
However... take a listen. Bette takes to rock well. 'Only in Miami', 'Let Me Drive', 'My Favorite Waste of Time' and 'Come Back Jimmy Dean' are all great songs and she does them well.
The concert that went out with this group of songs, 'Art or Bust', is a great one! Unable to locate on DVD, but if you have a vcr and can find the tape... definitely have a look see!
This is certainly a departure for Bette, and it was early enough in her career to be tossed aside, but it is most worthy of applause.
NO FRILLS IS RIGHT.......2005-08-05
Bette made a great album in the 80's that nobody bought and got zero airplay. Why? The video for Beast of Burden got lots a play on MTV at the time, should have been a huge hit for her. But it wasn't. Oh well. Who says radio programmers or most of the public for that matter, know what's good and what isn't.
Bette in the 80's.......2005-06-22
This albulm is real departure to Bette's earlier stuff and is a real reflection of the 80's, and once again Bette has captured the sound and feel of this time. This is not the greatest Bette albulm, but any Divine Miss M fan should have this in their collection.

Customer Reviews:
She's Gonna Make It After All.......2004-07-15
Amy Allison's vocal and musical styling harken back to an earlier time, almost Cline-like in that same way that Carolyn Mark is. She actually feels like a soul sister to Mark, or the equally real Amy Rigby. These are not a Kasey Chambers invoking images of windswept praries alone with the little ones, or an Allison Moorer who seems almost to be the pretty girl singing about the heartbreak that causes. These are the best friends girls, the ones you can kick off your shoes and put your feet up on the coffee table with. She is the musical equivilent of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Simply Thrilled.......2003-10-14
Amy Allison is one of pop's GREAT poets. If the likes Shania Twain recorded the Allison's poptastic "Baby, You're The One" she would probably turn it into an international multi-million seller and ruin it for us already loving it. Many of the songs could be BIG hits for more "normal" voiced singers. Amy Allison's voice like her talent is something unique and something to be treasured. No one else could sing these songs quite as great as Amy does. You believe she's lived every song and she comes over as a much smarter version of Karen Black's character in the movie classic "5 Easy Pieces".
The spellbindingly gorgeous but edgy production from David Scott of The Pearlfishers provides perhaps the best ever setting for Amy's songwriting and vocals. "Don't String Me Along", the album's most beautiful song is surely up there in the all time top 20 greatest heartbreak tracks.
If all you can hear is that Amy's voice isn't exactly average it's time you cleaned your ears out and opened your mind. Albums this great are very rare.
Absolutely magnificent!.......2003-10-11
What a great CD. What a talent. Amy Allison keeps getting better & better and this CD is her best yet. Her voice, her songwriting, her production are all first class. Can't say enough about her unique quirky voice, her brainy thoughtful down but up again lyrics and all around musicianship. A true artist that you hope gets the wide recognition she deserves but even if she doesn't, you know she has the respect of her fans, her friends and the people she makes music with.
Christagau's review informs us.......2003-09-10
The Maudlin Years? Sad Girl? Here's where she gets really bereft. After declaring abject loneliness in the title tune-"If you want to take a walk downtown/I'd be happy just to move my legs around/We don't have to say a word, but then again/We could just make comments now and then"-she makes a principle of dashing her own hopes, song by song. The wanly jubilant "Baby, You're the One" leads directly to "What will we do when the money runs out?" "Don't String Me Along" generates "Say It Isn't So." "Dreaming's Killing Me," she knows it, only then it's "Thank God for the wine/That made me lose my mind" and also "loosened up his tongue." The finale is a love duet with her producer in which she proposes they "leave the world behind."
If you don't dig this then you need help..........2003-08-01
So, this album marks the latest adventures of the best kept secret in music history. You'll hear lazy, closed minded individuals kvetching about Amy's "nasal" vocal delivery. Don't listen to those malcontents, Amy Allison sings and writes with the best of them and deserves to be a huge star. This could be the outright pop album of the year but that'd depend on justice being done. When was the last time that happened...?

This album has some weird but wonderful song choices........1999-05-21
This is a kind of Persuasions classic, because it features their concert standards, "Under the Boardwalk," and the autobiographical "Still Ain't Got No Band." But it also has some weird and wonderful song choices. I mean, The Partridge Family? Yes, the Persuasions sing The Partridge Family's "I Woke Up In Love This Morning," and make it a heavyweight tune. This is the only album to feature a female Persuasion---Bev Roehler, who sang the high stuff on more than half the tracks. Oh yeah, and Paul Simon's "Slip Sliding Away" is pretty good, too.

Album Description
Most people think of Doris Day as a Hollywood girl-next-door who sang in her films. Posterity hasn't quite placed her where she belongs: among a handful of truly great singers - Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney - who made lyrics sound so personal and true that you forgot you were hearing a so-called "performance." James Cagney, Day's co-star in Love me or Leave Me, summed up her gifts: "The touchstone is simplicity, the simple line of performance, directly to you, uncluttered." In her best and worst films, in "The Comb and Paper Polka" or in the Rodgers & Hart score of the movie Jumbo, Day's utter genuineness never fails to touch the heart.
So it is in Karen Oberlin's jazz-inspired salute to Day. For the last few years, Karen has charmed cabaret and theater audience in and out of New York, her hometown. Were this 1945 - the year that Day brought Les Brown's orchestra to its peak of glory with her vocal on "Sentimental Journey" - swing bandleaders would be vying for Karen's services. But we're lucky to have her here now: a singer who, like Day delivers each song with warmth, honesty, and no frills; who radiates positive energy; and who makes you feel she's by your side, singing in your ear.
-- James Gavin, author of Deep in a Dream: The long night of Chet Baker
Customer Reviews:
Not Doris.......2007-07-25
Karen Oberlin is not Doris Day. Her voice doesn't have energy or power, her range is narrow and often misses the tone sounding thin and weak. To do a whole album of someone like Doris Day - it should dazzle, but it does not.
It's not that I was expecting Doris Day - but that it would be an album that scintillated with it's own energy and would modernize the arrangements with a jazz sound. Doris's voice sparkled. In comparison this album is quite ordinary and Karen's voice in this sounds ordinary. I was disappointed.
My favorite singer.......2006-12-09
This is without a doubt my favorite CD ever. I have been fortunate enough to hear Ms. Oberlin perform live many times in NYC and this CD almost captures the beauty of her live performances.
Her rendition of How Are Things in Glocca Morra is the greatest version ever sung. She now owns that song!!
Karen Oberlin Is Pure Velvet..........2005-02-18
Listen to the soft, dreamy, vocal styling of Karen Oberlin and it will take you back to a simpler, more romantic time. Listen, and you will be carried back to a little restaurant, a beautiful, vocalist at the piano, melting your heart. Many of these standards including, "I'll See You in My Dreams," are envisioned in the abstract...gathered in your memories...take the time to close your eyes and listen. Karen's performance is just so soothing. I listened to every facet of these classics, trying to find the dagger that will take me out of my "journey." It wasn't there. Oh yes, this is about Doris Day, or is it? I'm listening to Karen singing to me, right now. That's all that matters.
The Return of Doris (or at least the next best thing).......2005-01-28
Probably because she first came to my attention as a movie star--and as the polar opposite of the screen sirens who stirred the hormones of a teen-aged boy--Doris Day somehow never reached me as a singer. It's been only in recent years that her voice, with its consistency, vibrancy, power and freshness, inerrant pitch and sublime musicality, has led me to collect her recordings. There's no question in my mind now that she was the real deal--a seasoned trouper who learned her craft in the '40's and could hold her own in front of any of the big bands--probably even without a microphone. There's an "edge" to every one of her performances, but nothing was forced. Moreover, as anyone who has seen her as Calamity Jane knows, she was the complete package: the voice, the persona (if that's an accurate term for so natural a presence), and the indomitable, unflagging spirit were all one.
Karen Oberlin's generous album (18 tunes!) is both a heartfelt homage to the great forebearer and a sparkling and highly personal set of performances that would do any present-day singer proud. She replaces Doris's tightly spinning vibrato with a smoother, more "contemporary," tone and employs more dynamic contrasts than Doris, allowing today's sensitive microphones to catch subtle shadings and vocal inflections. On "Que Sera," for example, the second "will be" in "whatever will be, will be" becomes not a repetitious iamb but an unexpected trochee in the artist's playful, dramatically effective emphasis on "will." On "It's Magic" she practically makes us associate the magical with the miraculous in her slight pause and then embracing of the critical word.
Credit, too, the always surprising arrangements of pianist Peter Firth and the sensitive accompaniment provided by two of New York's finest--David Fink (ironically, a favorite bassist of Andre Previn, who accompanied Doris on one of her most memorable albums) and Kenny Washington (also the preferred drummer of hard boppers like Johnny Griffin).
Oberlin includes the little-known jewels, such as R&H's "Nobody's Heart," alongside the '50's Hit Parade songs. But even the latter sound like staples in the Great American Songbook (newly minted ones at that) thanks to the inspired musicianship, good taste, and respect for the overseeing muse that is in abundant evidence throughout the project. The entire program is a labor of love, one that no listener (even someone who doesn't remember Doris) can't help but love.
A magnificent tribute album.......2003-02-06
This is one of three Doris Day tribute albums that I own. All are brilliant, but in different ways. None of them are straight copies and there are fewer songs that they share in common than one might expect. Karen's interest in Doris's music was really stirred when she heard some of the early jazzy recordings that Doris made with Les Brown. Karen firmly believes that Doris is not taken as seriously as she should be, so this album avoids anything lightweight. The style of the album is jazz, using piano, bass, drums, guitar, tenor sax and flugelhorn.
Whatever will be will be (Que sera sera) is given a completely different arrangement, created especially for Karen, which brings out the true meaning of the song. The result is impressive. Karen states that two her favorite albums are Duet and Day by night. Doris recorded Close your eyes twice, once for each of those albums. Karen's version opens this set. Yes and Nobody's heart are two other songs on Duet that Karen covered for this album, which also includes The night we called it a day from Day by night.
Secret love, I'll never stop loving you, It's magic and Sentimental journey are four famous classics here, all exquisitely covered by Karen. I'm not sure if How are things in Glocca Morra? really belongs in this collection, but I love that song as much as Karen does, and Doris did actually sing the song.
With eighteen tracks, all of them wonderful, this is a great tribute to Doris. It is my first Karen Oberlin album, but it certainly won't be my last.
