It's perhaps inevitable that Keane's debut album, Hopes and Fears, will draw numerous comparisons to Coldplay. Like them, Keane were discovered by indie label Fierce Panda, who released a single ("Everybody's Changing"). And, like Coldplay, Keane also do a fine trade in catchy and heartfelt indie-pop, all bruised verses and soaring choruses. But though their sound is sure to please fans of Coldplay and Travis, the reality is that Keane manage to sound that little bit more delicate. This could be due to the band's relatively unusual makeup: rather than guitars, the trio uses a piano.

At its best, Hopes and Fears is reminiscent of Bends-era Radiohead, and singer Tom Chaplin's voice is closer to Thom Yorke's falsetto than Chris Martin's cracked whine. On tracks such as the hit single, "Somewhere Only We Know" they manage to squeeze an epic-sounding poignancy from their stripped-down sound (a lot of this is due to the album's superb production). Across 10 tracks, all this slow-burning melancholy skates a bit close to self-indulgence, and you can't help but wish they'd rock out a bit. But Hopes and Fears is still a remarkable and surprisingly mature debut album from a young band with a bright future. --Robert Burrow

Such a terrific album. It is of my favorites (along with Muse's "Showbiz", Our Lady Peace's "Spiritual Machines", and Rammstein's "Mutter" --I know, they're all much different). So beautiful, inventive, 'cry', fresh, and Tom chaplin's voice KILLS me. Some of the things they do are nuts, and they can get away with it perfectly.

I definatly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

The first time I heard "somewhere only we know", I was blown away as never before. Actually, the last time that happened, I think I was a little kid and "Careless whisper" by George Michael came out!

Anyhow, back to Keane and hopes and fears. Such a solid album with out of this world melodies, lyrics and production and a beautiful voice of Tom the lead singer.
Every song on the album is very special and the album is the longest staying CD on my CD player I think I listened to it endlessly and religiously for nearly 8 months. No wonder it won the most prestegious and most coveted award in England "Best album, BRIT awards" in 2005.

"Somewhere only we know": Keane's best song. A painfully beautiful song with touching lyrics and melodies. It still brings tears to my eyes. They will always be remembered for this and I think it will haunt them to the end of their career as the song they wrote and couldn't out do!! One of my favorite songs of all time.....

"This is the last time": A tower of glory. The music is amazing and it just takes you! The cressendo in Tom's voice once again makes my hairs stand and I still have goosebumps all over!!

"Everybody's changing" a massive giant, the essence of keane's flawless beautiful work. It was a massive hit all over Europe.

"Bedshaped"....Many's the time I ran with you down
The rainy roads of our old town
Many the lives we lived in each day
and burried altogether....
Doesn't get any better than this ha!?

"Can't stop now" strong beautiful lyrics and melodies. I relate very much to this song and its strong painful lyrics and soring music go straight to the core of me. It reminded me of one of my best friends who is in Seattle at the moment and I'm sure we share the same sentiments about a town we lived in for a good while!!

"She has no time" Don't even get me started on the painful hurt voice of Tom in this. Very honest and tender!

Won't bore you anymore but I promise you, every song on the album is worth listening to. A very mature yet accessable crafty art work. How many acts do this with their first ever debut release?.

Keane are now up there in my mind and heart with the great legends of music and song. All I can say to them is love and respect.

I got this CD mainly for "Somewhere Only We Know" after hearing Blake Lewis sing it. But I like other songs on this cd too. Band is different than anything here in the US, and I like their way of singing and playing music. I have to say, I like the cd that they made after this one, even better.

my niece loved it!.......2007-06-28

Bought as a gift for my 4-year old niece for her birthday, this CD stays in my car for her use when I'm driving. She loves it and asks for individual princesses and we sing along. I don't know how many times we've listened to it already (4 or 5, I imagine), but I anticipate many more. It's a heck of a lot easier than trying to remember the words on my own. :)

A Perfect Princess CD.......2007-03-30

I want to start off by saying that if you're looking to buy only one Disney Princess CD, this is the one to get. This CD contains 12 tracks featuring 7 princesses (at the time that this CD was made, Mulan did not yet exist, in fact, the Disney Princess line itself did not exist). Unlike many other Disney Princess CDs, this one contains a *complete* collection of princess songs. That means that all the songs that any Princess actually sings is on this CD. No, not every song from every Princess movie is on here, but I wouldn't expect them to be, nor do I think that they'd even fit onto this CD. Something that's nice about this CD compared to some of the other Disney Princess CDs is that there is no subversive advertising. That means no mediocre songs from Cinderella V or the Little Mermaid X are on it. There aren't even any songs sung by non-Princesses, all the songs that are sung partly by others are at least partially sung by a Princess as well. One of the most interesting things about the album, in my opinion, is that it contains 'Home' by Susan Egan as Belle. In Beauty and the Beast, Belle has no large solo songs of her own, so they included this track from the original 1994 cast recording of the Beauty and the Beast Broadway musical. This addition makes the CD more interesting and does not at all detract from the quality of the CD.
Again, if you are looking to buy only one Disney Princess CD or just find the best one, I would encourage you to buy this one. The selection of songs is complete and there isn't any annoying, mediocre album filler. I highly recommend this Disney Princess CD.

Perfect for a Princess.......2004-08-24

I bought this cd for my daughter's 3rd birthday. She LOVES it! She asks me to play it every day and we both sing along to all of the songs. She has even picked up on the songs that she didn't know before she received it. I love it because now she is more interested in listening to the cd and dancing with me in the house than watching a video. In quiet times, she likes to sit on my lap and look at the pictures in the liner notes. The recordings are beautiful, it is the one children's cd that I can listen to over and over. If you have a little girl who loves princesses, this is definitely worth the money.

This has not really been my listening genre - but I gave it a try and was hugely impressed! Really enjoyed the album, and will no doubt be getting more... Awesome vocal with great beats behind it!

Good even for non-metal fans.......2007-03-30

For those that don't know them, Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band.

Now, I am not really a metal person, yet when I got this album as a present from my cousin (who listens exclusively to symphonic/opera metal) I realised it is pretty good. The opera vocals surfacing from the symphonic melodies and quitars are capturing, and the songs themselves quite interesting to listen to.

To make a long story short: this is not as bad for your ears as you may think. It is somewhat louder than hard rock but it is not the kind of metal that becomes unbearable after two minutes when you are not used to it. It is pretty melodic and the arias are beautiful.

I am not really familiar neither with the genre or the band's other work, so I can't actually say anything to the fans. But for first-time listeners, go for it.

The CD is enjoyable, not great as a "Best Of" should be. I will have to be honest in saying that this is my first CD from Nightwish and based on what other people have said (best of their songs, etc), it may be the last. Don't get me wrong, I can play this over and over, but if these are the best, they do not bode well for me buying more.

I love all of the tracks on this album, though it is missing a few songs. But that`s alright, of course. Not everyone likes the same songs. For those who are new to Nightwish, this is a great way to start off. Before this came out, I usually reccomended Once, their most latest album. But now there`s an album that has Nightwish from the full nine years. This is great.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

One of my favorite Starting Line songs is on this CD...'Greg's Last Day'. This EP is what started it all. I remember not being able to find this EP around my town when it first came out and then I went to NYC and got lucky and found it. That was pretty much the best thing that could have happened. With Hopes of Starting Over contains the earlier versions of 'Leaving'(my favorite version "2-12-99 at the stroke of midnight...") and 'Saddest Girl Story' along with a cover of 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now'. If you don't own this EP yet, what are you waiting for? Seriously, do whatever it takes to get this! I've been a Starting Line fan for 6 years and almost 5 of them have given me the privilege of hearing this EP. So do yourself a favorite and pick this little piece of The Starting Line history up today!

Softly bewildered broken chords break the silence, echoing the way patients must often feel during the odyssey of serious or chronic illness... Then they modulate into a dreamy, hopeful tune in a major key, with a steady, comforting pulse of lower instruments below, nudging the listener on to accept a new routine of life that may lead to recovery or at least peace. "Hopes and Dreams" is another album of lush and gentle beauty by New Age harpist Lisa Lynne and her ensemble of talented instrumentalists. Here, she is joined in her original compositions by George Tortorelli on bamboo flutes, whistles and recorders, Nick Brown on guitars and bouzouki, Stephanie Fife on cello, Jem Moore on hammered dulcimer, co-producer Gil Morales on bass and keyboards, and John Wakefield on bells, chimes and hand percussion. The rich, nuanced, laid back sound they produce is truly calming and uplifting--the perfect, nurturing atmosphere in which to step out of the world of daily cares and seek healing or resolution. In the liner notes for this album, Lynne writes: "On my days home between tour dates, I drive my van full of harps [to City of Hope, a Los Angeles cancer treatment center]. We have workshops and concerts for patients and staff, and I play my harp in the various rooms, halls and treatment areas. I am humbled beyond words at the courageous and brilliant people that I have encountered at this place of hope and healing. They are the inspiration for this record, as most of this music has been written during my time there." Music born of love and offered in that spirit--who could ask for more? Soothing..........2004-10-09

Composed at the City of Hope Cancer Center near Los Angeles, this music was developed during Lisa Lynne's frequent visits to the wards, chemotherapy rooms, and intensive care unit. Personally, I find it amazing that a busy musician would take the time to play to patients, helping to create a few moments of peaceful reflection in what is otherwise a traumatic process.

Lynne uses the Celtic harp, in consort with cello, dulcimer, acoustic guitar, various flutes, bells, and chimes. Most of the woodwind duties are carried by Lynne's partner George Tortorelli, who really does a lot of the album work, and should get equal billing. Nobody turns in virtuoso performances, but that's not what the album is about. Instead, the effect is meant to be melodic and soothing, and that's what it is.

The impact of the composition is what is important to the players, not the composition itself. Something that often gets put down as 'mood music.' But in this context I'm will to cut Lynne some slack. I do find listening relaxing and comfortable, and I don't have to mind that it isn't as complex as many of the composer/player efforts to which I am drawn. I don't mind relaxing every once in a while.

This was my 2nd CD purchase of Lisa Lynne. I previously purchased Moonsongs and couldn't wait to get this one. This one did not disappoint. Just as beautiful as the other one. Relaxing, but not boring. Great music to have dinner by, riding in the car, a romantic evening or even quieting a baby. This is sure to become one of your favorites.

Another exquisite musical work from New Earth Records, Lisa Lynne's Hope and Dreams is a soothing and beautiful composition. It guides us from the very first notes into a realm of harps and subtle melody, turning our attention away from the business of life towards soft nuances of being. At times it is uplifting and ethereal, reminiscent of the gentle light of the sun at dawn, illuminating a delicate landscape. At others, melancholic, tugging at the tender parts of our heart that still holding sadness, it coaxes out soft tears from the hidden folds of our being, so we can heal. New age music of true quality, perfect for those quiet and reflective moments or for gazing tenderly into a loved one's eyes

Very different from the original.......2007-03-24

This was one of the first SACD surround sound CDs that I got after buying an SACD player. I love the album, Keane is a great band playing wonderful music. The surround sound version appears very different, much less 'direct' in favor of being much more immersive. I played the original CD version side-by-side and switched back and forth and the difference is stunning. My partner agreed that you hear much more details that are not apparent in the original CD. Very well remixed, great experience!

Hopes for fears.......2005-02-10

British mope-rock is alive and well, as Brit-pop trio Keane makes their debut with "Hopes and Fears." Strong, soaring vocals from Tom Chaplin are backed up by some solid piano-based pop and rock. Despite constant comparisons to Radiohead, Travis and Coldplay, Keane shows plenty of promise as a unique new band.

It starts off with a strong piano solo in the quiet "Somewhere Only We Know," followed by a stream of catchy pop like the thoughtful "Everybody's Changing" and the shimmery "Bend And Break," and gossamer ballads like the melancholy "We Might As Well Be Strangers" and soaring "She Has No Time." It wraps up on a strong note with the plaintive "Bedshaped."

If any British band breaks the rock mold, it seems to be labelled as a Radiohead/Coldplay wannabe. On some superficial levels, Keane sounds rather like those bands. But it manages to remain a bit apart, rocking a bit harder and sounding a bit more straightforward and simple. It's hard to truly classify Keane as really being pop -- the lack of guitar and the prevailing piano seem to edge its catchy melodies closer to classical pop.

The first thing to know about Keane is: No guitarist. At all. Ever. Don't let it scare you -- the mix of rippling piano and gentle percussion are enough to make their melodies catchy without electric riffs. At the same time, they take some musical risks. Psychedelic piano-pop? Believe it or not, Keane does that.

Tom Chaplin's vocals are the strongest point of Keane's lineup; his solid, high soars along with the shimmery music. At times his vocals get a bit TOO high, like when he sings the title line of "She Has No Time," but most of the time he manages to sound like a heartbroken guy exorcising his breakup demons. The songs themselves aren't terribly complex or insightful, but they can be quite poignant: "And if you have a minute why don't we go/talk about it somewhere only we know?/This could be the end of everything/so why don't we go/somewhere only we know?"

Keane needs to distance itself more from the other Brit-mope-rock bands before it can blossom into true greatness. But in "Hopes And Fears," they have succeeded in the basics: bringing forth some beautiful, sometimes heartrending music.

Oh please. This cd was mediocre at best. My daughter bought it, and I can understand why. He is a cute guy, and sings OK. However, to compare him to Hank Jr. or Randy Travis is ridiculous. Not that I am HUGE fans of either, but c'mon.

Music is full of pretty faces and mediocre voices. I suppose if it weren't for the high school kids buying this stuff, these people would have no careers.

I love everything this man does, and it's not because of what he looks like..... He truly sings from the heart and has the purest voice in country music today. Too bad people like "Hank Williams" and "Randy Travis" can yodel out tunes and make millions and achieve notariety, and a talent like Ty ends up on the fringes. But, it's all in who you know. Someday, real talent will take center stage. I think that day is coming, and I'm sure you'll hear and see more of Ty Herndon.
