Here's a handy collection of popular works for violin and orchestra. The title apparently refers to the mix of warmly romantic music, like the Massenet Méditation, and flashy virtuoso stuff, like the Sarasate Carmen Fantasy and Zigeunerweisen. Sarah Chang excels in both areas. Her Dvorák and Beethoven Romances are sweetly sung, while the insanely virtuosic Tzigane by Ravel, with its wild staccato and chordal effects, she tosses off without breaking a sweat. Except for the romanticized Bach Air from the Suite No. 3, there are no stylistic transgressions, and the mix of fiery virtuoso fare and romantic slower beauties keeps interest alive throughout. Conductor Placido Domingo's proficient accompaniments don't get in her way. All the selections are familiar. Such violin virtuosi as Suk, Oistrakh, Grumiaux, Vengerov, and Perlman have recorded most of them, often coming closer to capturing the inner glow of the music. But Chang's exciting performances can't fail to please, especially if you want all these favorites on one disc. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Fire and Ice? Fire, yes. But ? Brava Sarah! Theresa NY.......2005-04-22
After listening to this CD by Sarah Chang I can see the Fire in all of the selections, even the "Meditiation" by Massenet. But where the Ice comes in I cannot tell. Sarah plays with such vibrance and zeal and even if you've never heard the selection before it doesn't matter. Her interpretation of "Zigeunerweisen" is the best I have ever heard. And I think Placido Domingo also does a fabulous job of conducting. All in all, this is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable CD's I own. I urge you to buy it. You won't be sorry.
I'm impressed . . ........2004-10-22
I put the CD in CD player, turned up the volume, and went about the house doing domestic things. I had to stop doing the dishes, dry my hands, and run upstairs (and I do not like the stairs, have major issues with the stairs!) just to check the disc information. The playing was that good, jaw-droppingly so. I'm impressed.
Chang v. Perlman.......2004-10-03
This album has almost the same repertoire as one by Perlman. Some days I prefer the Perlman version, other days I prefer Sarah's version. Sarah has been a perfect technical virtuoso since she was 13. At age 19, she has matured in her artistic interpretation to rival the best in the world. (I consider Itzak Perlman to be the best, but Sarah is nearly his equal, and she is yet quite young.) I eagerly await each new album she publishes. I wish she would come to town so I could hear her live. I also wish she would record occasionally on analog LP, especially direct disc. I find CDs much less faithful to the sound of live music than LPs, though at least todays CD players are somewhat listenable, instead of making the dreadful sounds they did when the medium was new.
Great Sarasate.......2002-12-25
This recording of Carmen and Zigeunerweisen is hard to do any better. Simply great fiddle playing! Chang's vibrato and virtuosity suits this style perfectly and not many can play the page full of thirds in Carmen as well as she did it! Least successful was Beethoven and Bach. I rather prefer a more poetic mood (slower tempo) and a slightly less expansive vibrato for this kind of music. Sarah has a sometimes very broad vibrato well suited for fiery stuff but not so well suited for music that demands a certain level of sophistication. Anyway that is just my personal opinion as a violin freak. I guess the broader audience would not mind since the sound is very nice even if the vibrato is a bit out of control at times.
Thanks Sarah for yet another great recording!
Wow!.......2002-11-16
I think there's only two words to describe her playing --- Absolutely Awesome!

Elton John's Ice on Fire album.......2007-06-08
Very good ablum & great CD; good purchase all around.
Fans can never be objective..........2006-05-06
From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...Nikita is a great pop song, but the rest of the album is sorely lacking. Even a duet with George Michael is mess.
Some very good ones on it.......2006-01-27
When Elton John released this cd i saw him playin a concert in Madrid. He played two songs that are overlooked gems: "Paris" and "Cry to Heaven"...two extraordinary songs from the Elton John catalogue. One on this songs is on this cd "Cry to Heaven". Also very good are "Nikita" (a smash hit all over the world) and the beautifull song he wrote for John Lennon "The man who never died", a piano and synthetiser instrumental played with great passion and power. There are other lesser good songs on this cd but you can bet the ones are very good.
Where is "Act of War"??.......2005-01-06
The track listing for this remastered version of Ice on Fire is missing the last track (Act of War) on the original CD. What's up with that?
In any event, I think this is an OK album (the original one), but not one of Elton and Taupin's best. Still, if you are an Elton collector, you need this in your collection, too.
NOT SO GOOD AS USUAL BUT ALSO NOT SO BAD AS SAID.......2004-09-14
When I bought this record, I was thinking it would be a disaster, but after listening it carefully, I discovered that it was not the usual average quality generally delivered by Elton, but at the same time, I found some songs very interesting. I heard and knew "Nikita", the obvious hit, a great song, and I wondered what about the other songs on the album. Now in my point of view at least "This Town", "Soul Glove", "Cry to heaven", "Too young" and perhaps "Wrap her up" are very worthy songs. But I felt a little dissapointed with the other songs. The sound on this album is dominated by electronic keyboards rather than the usual piano, which is only hardly audibe on a very few songs in the background. If I had to rate the overall original album, I'd give it two stars. And why do I rate it wiht three stars? The answer can be found hearing the bonus items included, "The man who never died" is a great instrumental and the other three live tracks are not great but good. An album with some good songs mixed with other dark stuff that it's not what you can expect from Elton, but is far from being the disaster I supposed when I read the other reviews.

Misunderstood & unfairly reviewed.......2007-03-04
Yes, roots reggae enthusiasts have labeled this album as 'uncharacteristic,' 'unexpected,' etc. However, most people just don't get this album...It's NOT "The Right Time" masterpiece, but how could the trio possibly be expected to re-create one of reggae music's all-time top albums?!?!
Although it ventures away from classic reggae-style music, listeners are asked to approach it with an open mind. It is NOT a sell-out album and it is NOT a bad album; in fact, it actually grows on you with each repeated listening...the trick is to get people to give it a try!
For thier second album (released in '77), the Mighty Diamonds traveled to New Orleans and hooked up with producer Allen Toussaint in order to try their hands at a different musical genre, and they seemed most sincere in their attempt. The experiment - New Orleans Funk - was critically mauled at the time of the release. But, listeners should judge this album for what it is, and NOT for what it is not!
The Diamonds re-crafted a couple of their previously recorded songs ("Back Weh Mafia" and "Country Living") a la N.O. Soul. In addition, they tried their hands at cover songs, such as "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" and "Tracks Of My Tears." Overall, the album has, in places, a touch of 'reggae feel' to it, but it is decidedly 'un-reggae' compared to the Diamonds' other roots reggae '70's releases.
Throughout music history, other, bigger musical acts (Beatles, Miles Davis, Dylan, just to name a few...) were heavily criticized at the time for embarking on new (and uncharacteristic) musical territory, but it didn't stop those artists from putting out challenging/creative/ground-breaking records. The Mighty Diamonds are no different - they should be given the same musical freedom to roam because taking chances sometimes involves putting oneself 'out there' musically, but from experimentation comes growth.
On "Ice On Fire," the Mighty Diamonds have achieved musical growth...And, in doing so, they also made a catchy New Orleans Soul/Funk album! Judge it for yourself!!
*Other great Mighty Diamonds albums include: "The Right Time," Tell Me What's Wrong," "Planet Earth," "Planet Mars Dub," and "Stand Up To Your Judgement."
The ICE has Melted!.......2004-03-14
This album was not what you'd expect from the Diamonds. Unfortunately, this album was not representative of the hardest substance on earth!

Album Description
"Analogue Smoque's deportment owes much to Dada, which positions it some 85 years late for lunch. The work's disjunct, shard-like character looks in significant measure to the manner in which it came together as a pastiche of youthful bits." Mike Silverton
A truly surrealistic pillow of a text/sound work, Analogue Smoque combinates poet and La Folia honcho Mike Silverton's epic poe(m) (with Mike recitating) and the sounds (both electronic and not) of Tom Hamilton and Al Margolis. Sounds combine and contrast, highlight and ignore, as Silverton's opus unfolds in all its glory.
Mike Silverton will only say that "At first blush, the alert listener detects a link between Analogue Smoque and Madam Blavatsky. The magi demur. Rather, they say, the text reveals its author's interest in cryptorchidistics, i.e., states of non-descent." Tom Hamilton has composed and performed electronic music for over 30 years. Rather than addressing traditional modes of presentation and observation, Hamilton prefers to explore interaction and simultaneity as aspects of "present-time listening" on both the performers' and listeners' parts. Al Margolis has been working with electronics/sounds since New Year's Day 1984. His work can best be described as "sound fingerpainting."

definitely a good buy.......2006-01-22
for someone of persian descent, this album artfully presents the familiar, comforting, and beautiful sounds of classical persian music. bijan plays excellent violin, though if you're looking for solos of other persian instruments, such as santour or dombak, you may want to supplement this CD with others.
for anyone looking to choreograph traditional persian dance pieces for groups, tracks 5 and 6 provide solid instrumentals with good beats and good melodies, and they have the characteristic sound of persian music that will get an audience excited.
a few of the tracks are a little too dramatic and/or synthesized for my taste, but there's a nice variety of sound throughout, and you'll probably be able to get some good use out of this CD. i recommend it.
fire on ice.......1999-12-07
This artist feels his music as he plays and allows the listener to enter his world. The music is very emotional and a definate recommendation for people who love instrumental music - especially the violin. A real masterpiece. I am ordering this album for another family member who loves music as I do.

T.C. underrated,------ cd underappreciated.........2002-01-25
..By those who now OVERAPPRECIATE him !
WOW, I am always interested in the subjectivities and objectivities in people's "opinions". Terry Callier,so long overdue for some solid "recognition" has been "discovered" in Europe during the early 90's. His old Cadet recordings are now being LAVISHED over as mini-masterpieces ,rightfully so!
For some reason, the 2 Elektra recordings seem to be ignored, the main criticism is that they are "overproduced".
We are dealing in irony now, as Elektra was only trying to do what has finally been accomplished--to get the great Terry Callier compositions some recognition(read-SELL COPIES, hehehe).
The cd features the usual Chicago session musicians, and of course, there is more lavish instrumentation/orchestration on the tracks..
"Holdin On" is re-recorded (originally on the cd "Turn You To Love"),with an eye towards the "R&B" market, and it is STILL a wonderful song! On the flip side, the pandering "Disco in the Sky" is not a terrible cut, but the disco groove on the chorus IS a bit annoying.
All the tracks have the dreamy, image laden TC jazz/folk doowop sound, save only one COMPLETE DOG track-"Street Fever". This track is a totally inappropriate "riff-rock" travesty,I dont know what they were thinking.........
"African Violet" hints at the sounds of the lament of the griots, and "Butterfly" a whimsical jazz/ballad.
I disagree with the "criticisms" of this recording, it isnt overproduced, it is just a different approach to presenting the musics of this fine , expressive singer, a composer of beautiful and heartfelt songs.

African Violet And Other Delights.......2005-03-31
Before today I hadn't a clue who Terry Callier was.I was listening to an album my father had purchased today by him and this was the one-and this is proof how,in the right hands how superb a first impression can be.On 1978's 'Fire & Ice" Callier employs the talents of Eddie Harris,Phil Upchurch and Minnie Ripperton for an arresting, intense mixture of acoustic guitar with firey soul and funk-rock.The biting "Street Fever" with it's powerfully rocking, slamming chords is a visceral commentary on the plight of the cities dislocated. On the Philly soul inspired "Disco In The Sky" Callier speculates on where rock stars will go after death. The most potent song is the soulful, poetic "African Violet",in which Callier encourages the black community to continue it's struggle for acceptance in society, despite past faliers and resentments.
During the disco era in which 'Fire & Ice' was released, politically inclined message songs were hardly in vogue.Nore was it always smart for a black 60's folk-rocker like
Callier to start playing Gil Scott Heron by integrating funky rhythms and R&B arrangements into his sound. But he did and with the right people he did it extremely well. This sound continued for at least one more album I noticed but for those who know Callier only for his earlier career I suggest you give this a listen. For those who enjoy protest R&B and funk with great songwriting and arrangements this will be right up your alley!
