Product Description
dark, moody, and melancholy are words that come easily to the mind when listening to
w a t e r w o r k s debut album, dragonfly. dragonfly is thematically about feeling too much in a world filled with both loss and grace. the sounds owing as much to performance art and poetry as to jazz ... layer after layer of musical and verbal images lay down a fresh vocabulary of aural allegory.

Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers have always been interested in music outside reggae, with the band of siblings moving from syth-pop sheen in the 1980s to a more mature and multi-genre sound in the late `90s. Dragonfly, Ziggy Marley's first solo effort, continues this trajectory. Featuring producers Ross Hogarth (Metallica, Jewel) and Scott Litt (R.E.M.), as well as special guests Flea, John Frusciante, David Lindley, and Incubus's Chris Kilmore, Dragonfly sounds closer to the adult contemporary music of recent Sting or R.E.M. than the reggae of his father. But even if the apple has fallen away from the music tree, Ziggy's voice has the same forceful yearning and brittle timbre as his father; also like his father, Marley wears his politics on his sleeve (particularly on "Shalom Salaam" and "In The Name Of God") without being rudimentary. This may not sound like the record reggae enthusiasts pray to Jah for, but Marley succeeds on his own terms, creating a wide-ranging and appealing vision. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
Best Ziggy album since "Conscious Party".......2006-10-12
"Conscious Party" is my favorite Ziggy Marley album because I don't need to skip a single track on it. This album is right up there with that one. This CD is worth checking out for the tracks "Dragonfly", "True To Myself" and "Melancholy Mood" alone. Of course in a week I will say it is worth it for a handful of completely different tracks. This is one of those albums that you like right away and gets better with every listen.
amazing.......2006-01-08
Ive got to say ziggy did this one for me every track screams my name i play it all the time and no i wont be put in a box love ziggy Had the pleasure of meeting him ,he's charming and humble . keep it up ziggy. Rayach one love
An Amzing Emotionally Triggered Album.......2005-12-05
Ziggy Marley has made a great contribution to the music industry with this reggae/blues/rock fusion album. The lyrics written by Stephen Marley are exceptional and intellectual, but it is Ziggy's voice that has blown me away. The first song on the album, Dragonfly, starts the album off with an environmental awareness message. The acoustic guitar makes the vocals understandable and better sounding. Some more great songs are; True to Myself, Shalom Salaam, Looking, In the Name of God, and Deny, but the whole album takes the breath out of everyone who experiences it. This album is a must get, and is one of my favorites of all time. I DEFINITELY RECOMEND "DRAGONFLY!!!!"

there's a rainbow in the sky, all the time!.......2003-09-09
i saw ziggy live in concert for free and i HAD to get this CD. i like every song on it except maybe for the last one.
highlights are: 'dragonfly,' ' true to myself' 'i get out,' 'in the name of god' 'shalom salaam' & 'rainbow in the sky.' actually, get this cd just for that song, rainbow in the sky, if anything. it's such a great song. and i love the message of shalom salaam.
i think this cd is great for people of all ages too. kids really like reggae. best of all this cd is so positive, the music makes you very happy and puts you in an irie mood.

can do better.......2007-06-07
not the best of franks output, but it is a franks, so how bad could it be? there are some musicians that i listen to everything they produce (miles, monk, billie, chet, elling etc). franks is one of them. listen & enjoy.
Surprised and disappointed.......2007-05-25
I've been a Michael Franks fan since I first heard "Popsicle Toes" on AM radio back in 1975, and for the record own five of his albums on vinyl and four on CD. I purchased Dragonfly Summer based on the reviews posted, and, quite frankly, because of the number of 5-star reviews, was EXTREMELY disappointed. Multiple listenings, over two different headphones setups, and on the big sound system in the living room through very good speakers didn't change my opinion. While this IS decent Franks music, it does not compare favorably to earlier works like The Art Of Tea, Sleeping Gypsy, and Tiger In The Rain, or his recent Watching The Snow. If you're considering beginning a relationship with this fine artist, I suggest you start with The Art Of Tea, and put Dragonfly Summer on the long list.
Michael Comes Full Circle To Make His Best Work.......2006-07-12
Dragonfly Summer is my favorite MF album. The key thing to consider is everything that happened previously. The first five albums (Art of Tea - One Bad Habit) were mostly smooth jazz with great arrangements played by the Crusaders, etc. Then for the next several albums (Objects of Desire - The Camera Never Lies) Michael became more (not totally, just more) electronic and synthesized using producer Rob Mounsey. Good material because it was Michael but a severe dropoff for those desiring the more acoustic sound of the previous projects. Then after a break came Blue Pacific which combined the acoustic with the electronic. A wonderful project...but only a setup for the true masterpiece: Dragonfly Summer.
Dragonfly Summer was in the same vein as Pacific except Michael's method of compiling multiple styles was more polished and consistent. The result was an album that showed Franks coming full circle and showering us with the cumulative knowledge of his experiences on both sides of the fence. Without going into a blow by blow of each individual song I'll just leave you with this challenge. By the time you get to "I Love Lucy" you'll be blown away, and that's just the first half. When you get to "How I Remember You" which ends the last half you'll be in love with love and all else that's special to you.
For anyone who liked Michael Franks but was wary of his new directions: Don't be afraid...it's okay, come on into this CD...the water's warm again. For those who know MF a little: It's okay. Come inside and relax to the warmth and shelter of Dragonfly Summer. As for the rest of you: there will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth once you go through life and find out what you missed out on.
BRILLIANT ALBUM TO START WITH !.......2003-12-31
I discovered that album one day in a store and was hooked right away. I used to have older albums by Franks, which I loved, but this was incredible because Franks had managed so brilliantly to adapt to a more modern sound.
This remained my favorite Michael Franks album until 'Abandoned Garden' came out. I'd say it's the perfect album to get started on his music, as it displays a variety of uptempo and slow songs, jazz numbers and pop tunes, funny and nostalgic lyrics. There's something for everyone in this album, but the genius of Michael Franks is to make it all sound like a coherent piece of work.
Great album which will provide hours upon hours of exciting listening.
Blissful escape.......2003-06-23
Ever since i heard one of Michael Franks songs some years ago
i knew that i had to be a fan and that holds true today his C.D.
Dragonfly summer is awesome and i recommend it to all fans who
appreciate good music.

The Montreal Days.......2006-10-24
I remember being a Montreal High sophomore back in 1970 and everyone was talking about this band playing the high school dance circuit called Mahogany Rush. The rumor was was that the guitarist had been "tripping" and had somehow been rescued from his bad trip by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, miraculously learning guitar overnight when he came back. The big single at the time was a 45 called "Buddy" which recounts this story in part. The band made a surprise appearance at our school's morning assembly to advertise for the weekend dance. I was blown away. Even at 16, Frank Marino could play well enough to legitimize the legend. Although none of the songs off his first album appear on this compilation I still recommend it...just thought I'd add this historical footnote.
Good Anthology Of Hendrix Styled Canadian Guitarist.......2002-03-09
Frank Marino was a Canadian guitarist who adeptly played in a Hendrix hippy/psychedelic guitar style with his band Mahogany Rush during the seventies. "Dragonfly: The Best Of Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush" only features his tenure at CBS. His work before and after this period is not included here. Marino's style especially later in his CBS tenure tended to be more overblown and bombastic than the work of another Hendrix aficionado Robin Trower. His playing was also not as bluesy and more metallic than Hendrix fan Stevie Ray Vaughan. That being said he still produced some interesting material and his albums always featured some great playing. Reportedly he used to participate in guitar "cutting" contests with Ted Nugent and Mark Pinera (Iron Butterfly). For most of his tenure at CBS his band Mahogany Rush was a power trio with Paul Harwood on bass and Jim Ayoub on skins. Most of his best tunes are included here such as originals like "Jive Baby", "Dragonfly", "Sister Change" and "Woman". Covers like "Johnny B. Goode", "All Along The Watchtower", and "Roadhouse Blues" prove he could also interpret the material of others. He was perhaps at his best in a live context and there are a number of cuts from his "Live" lp and a live version of "I'm A King Bee" from the rare "California Jam" lp.
I was disappointed that a few cuts like his covers of "Purple Haze" (often his concert encore) and "Rock Me Baby" were not included. I also miss "The Answer" and "Broken Heart Blues" and somewhat oddly one of his last singles for CBS "Strange Dreams" was omitted. This set provides a good sample Marino's playing and style. Rumor has it according to his web site that CBS is planning a multi-disk box set later in the year. Hopefully my favorites which were omitted from this compilation will be added to that set if it is released along with some unissued live and studio tracks. If like what you hear on this set your next step should be the purchase of the "Live" lp.
Ignore BluesDuke`s scathing review !.......2002-03-07
This guy BluesDuke speaks well but I`m not convinced he has the qualifications to be overly critical of Frank Marino or any other artist.Frank is much more talented than BluesDuke gives him credit for.So again I say disregard BluesDukes review completely! Let BluesDuke strum his 3 chords on an old silvertone with his big beer belly hangin out,we will listen to Frank Marino!
It's The One To Have If You Absolutely Must Have Him.......2000-11-30
Like Robin Trower, Frank Marino was one of a few thousand guitarists who fell to Jimi Hendrix's feet and couldn't stand up on their own again if you replaced their legs with robotic limbs. Unlike Trower, though, Frank Marino was so much flash that what little substance he bore came through when he played the blues. And even there it doesn't exactly make him much more than a hit-and-run bystander. In other words, in terms of real quality or depth Marino doesn't even come close to "For Earth Below," never mind the Electric Ladykiller Himself...
But if you really have to have something of him in the hard rock library, stay strictly with this one. It's useful as a kind of one-stop guitar lesson for those players who absolutely insist that shredding the daylights out of the fretboard is the only way to play the instrument - Marino was nothing if not a technically overendowed player. And, to whomever's credit, the selection is done quite prudently. By the time Marino and company (Mahogany Rush didn't always have Marino's name top billed, and they were just a workaday power trio who probably got in over their heads when they got the recording contract their presumed bar audiences were naive enough to believe they deserved) are finished here, it's over before you begin contemplating putting them under arrest for shameless, self-congratulatory derivation.
And at least you don't have to put up with an entire album's worth of philosophical pretentiousness (think "World Anthem"), either. Best leave that to Canada's other Rushing power trio - the one without the Mahogany in the name, that is - and let this one remain the pleasant memory of misspent youth they were really destined to become in the first place. For a Hendrix sycophant with some substance and a damn sight better feeling for the blues, the word is Stevie Ray Vaughan.
BEFORE THERE WAS SHRED!.......2000-10-10
Before there was shred, before anyone knew what to label it or how to market it, there was Frank Marino. But he was much more then a speed freak, as this retrospective (which traces his band's late-seventies Columbia years) clearly demonstrates. Songs like "Dragonfly" (a haunting bit of psychedelic funk) and "Requiem For a Sinner" (with it's droney, Middle-Eastern overtones and Marino's amazing Arabic-tinged guitar solo) are not merely testaments to his agility but also to his adventurous and creative spirit. Of course,Frank often just liked to boogie, as he most dramatically does on the scathing live versions of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Who Do Ya Love," where he plays some of the fastest and intense blues licks ever heard by man. Long may Marino wail!

A regular listener's impression.......2006-03-24
I am not an expert in classical music, but have always loved the string instruments. I bought this CD for relaxation (as the title implies) and to help me focus on writing a thesis. I was torn between this CD and the Cello for Relaxation. I am pleased with my choice. My favorites are track #2 and #10 (listen to the samples through Amazon) - I usually play these two on repeat. My least favorite is track #7 because it sounds like a piano dominated movie soundtrack.
Although I wish I could have exchanged some of the tracks for others, I think this CD was worth the money and is a nice mix for those of us who don't know specific composers by name or who want a good sampling.
VIOLIN.......2005-09-10
The selection of music was a good mix and pleasant in listening to them.
The choice of orchestras and conductors are also very well selected offering very good variety in the similar music mood.
My two long time favourites "Meditation" and "Salut d'amour" were very well played in the right tempo and instrumental arrangement.
The recording quality is good offering both clarity and defination in the recording.
Everything remembered and wanted on strings.......2003-10-16
To me, it is an extraordinary combination demonstarting the old world beauty and timeless artistry of the violin.
It will take you back to everything good remembered, and forward to everything good ahead of us.
Absolutely Wonderful.......2000-06-16
The music on this cd is so beautiful. It is perfect to listen to when you want to relax.

Lost Biker Psychedelia Of The Highest Form.......2006-06-01
Dragonfly was actually a band called The Legend who's debut album (on which they weren't allowed to play or contribute songs) was somewhat butchered by their record company. So they decided to pursue other interests. Under a different name (association with that Legend album wasn't gonna happen), they recorded this. They didn't have the best sound quality (crackles and pops still cover the sound on CD), but they had enough technology to mess around. Throughout this album, the track suddenly jumps into backward recording, slows down suddenly, or dissipates altogether. The boys explode into ridiculous giggles, get wasted by a moaning trombone, and turn into a giant rolling ball of mung at the end before returning to form. Along the way, we have some good songs. "Blue Monday" opens the album with a moan of "Oooh my God.." then harsh chords, before rhythm guitarist Gene cracks his throat in anger. "Enjoy Yourself" is bouncy, thoughtful psychedelia, "Crazy Woman" sounds very 60s and somewhat Moby Grape. "To Be Free" is a good bit of yearning and hope: the classic 60s message. There's just all kinds of good stuff here. The drums are fierce and the fuzz-toned lead guitar is excellent. There's some heavy solos on this album. Great performing. Gene's vocals sometimes sound like Keith Relf of the Yardbirds and sometimes like Jack Bruce of Cream. It's forgotten, and that's a pity. Take an acid trip ito the good ol' days of heavy psychedelic hard rock. It'll blow you away.

The Best Children's Choir Around.......2004-02-15
There's no doubt these kids are good. I have never heard a better children's choir. They sing extreemly hard material almost flawlessly. The biggest problem with this CD is some of the songs are downright boreing. Mediocre folk songs sung in unison are not highlights. But some other songs are quite interesting. My favorite is Aglepta. You can't describe it except to say it is strange, and absolutly wonderful. It is one of my favorite choral compositions of all time and this is the best performance of it I have ever heard. Overall, I would recommend this CD, but have your finger on the skip button.

Album Description
Recipient of a 2004 NAPPA GOLD AWARD! Dragonfly consists of singer Aiko Shimada and koto player Elizabeth Falconer (both of "Oyasumi" fame) with Mako, whose incredible voice and instrumental talent is introduced on this album. Mako was born in Okinawa and moved to Hawai'i at the age of eleven, and currently resides in Seattle. She performs the sanshin, a 3-stringed lute covered with python skin that is native to Okinawa, and sings in English, Okinawan, and Hawaiian, flowing easily from one style to the next. She is joined by the warm vocals and guitars of the award-winning performer Aiko Shimada, a native Japanese who has made a career in the states as a folk/jazz singer and songwriter, both in English and Japanese. With them is Elizabeth Falconer on koto, a classical Japanese instrument she studied in Japan for over a decade, an instrument she has composed and arranged for, told stories with, and collaborated with various artists on, for nearly twenty-five years. Together they are Dragonfly, creating fresh yet nostolgic music.

Shimanchu.......2005-06-28
If I close my eyes, I can see the litle shops in Koza. I can smell yaki tori, and taste soki soba... the song leaves me wanting to taste melon soda and hear more Uchinaguchi.
Four stars, not five because I have a great love for the traditional sounds of Okinawa. I did, however, find this Dragonfly interpretation very pleasing... very soothing. I would definitely see Dragonfly live if given the opportunity.
Island-hopping, Pacific Rim style.......2005-03-24
"Serendipity" and "simpatico" are apt descriptions of the musical collaboration on Island Dreams. American-born musician Elizabeth Falconer's instrument is the koto (an intergral part of Japanese classical music and traditional culture), while Japanese singer/composer Aiko Shimada specializes in Western musical forms with a slight East Asian spin. The third member of the trio -- Mako -- is from Okinawa. Her main axe is the sanshin, a 3-stringed Okinawan lute. A series of happy accidents led to the group's members finding one another, and the decidedly eclectic nature of the cuts on this disc reflect the meeting of four cultures -- and three unique takes on music.
While many recordings fall into the "world fusion" category, very few live up to the name -- Island Dreams is a glorious exception to the rule. The cuts are a whirlwind tour of various Pacific islands (including Hawaii, where Mako grew up - also where she fell in love with one of the great local traditions, slack key guitar). There's a depth and intensity to the music that emerges after a few listens -- a true sense of cultures uniting, rather than colliding. You'll also hear instruments used in unusual ways -- Falconer's slack-key koto licks, for example.
It's impossible to pick favorite cuts (too many choices here!), but I'm especially fond of "Kojo no Tsuki / Moonlit Castle Reflections" (pensive and very Japanese), "Migumi /One" (Mako's tribute to her parents), and "Ku'u Pua I Paoakalani / My Flowers at Paoakalani, " written by one of Hawaii's most beloved composers, Queen Liliuokalani. In sum, this is one of the most unusual -- and delightful -- discs to hit my CD player in a long, long time.
BE-YU-T-FUL!.......2004-12-23
Wow. If you want a recording that just plain makes you feel soothed and joyful, this is it. What a beautiful blending of sounds and cultures! These musicians were somehow able to bring together lullaby-type songs from Southern Japan (Okinawa) and Hawaii and make them all seem familiar, even to someone who does not know much about those places. I am not surprised this won some awards --- it leaves me feeling warm and happy every time I listen to it.
Interesting mix.......2004-09-14
Some people propose that Japan was settled in the south in part by people with a Polynesian background. So it's interesting to hear a CD that combines Japanese pieces with some traditional Hawaiian ukele. The juxtaposition is appealing.
That aside, this is a CD of soft, lilting music that could serve as lullabies, as long as you like high-pitched Japanese-style singing. This isn't everyone's cup of tea--but with the upsurge in Anime music, you might find this quite interesting if you are getting into Japanese sound.
A harmony that results in strong group cohesion & chemistry.......2004-07-05
Musicians are always looking to collaborate with others who share their same vision, and the partnership of Aiko Shimada (guitar, vocals), Mako (sanshin, ukelele, vocals), and Elizabeth Falconer (koto) yields bountiful rewards with their arrangements of slower, melodic songs from Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii and Tahiti. Some original material is also included, as well as some English lyrics written for a couple of the other offerings. The contemplative and reflective nature of their chosen Asian and Pacific Island fare is largely a function of tempo, and a couple more songs like the moderate-tempo'ed Tahitian welcoming song, "Mahalo," would have been helpful to demonstrate that the wind can range from mere breezes and zephyrs to also flurries and gusts. Also, some additional liner notes with translation of their foreign lyrics would have helped build a stronger sense of audience understanding and community. All in all, the members of Dragonfly have mastered the art of listening to each other, knowing when to lead and when to follow for the trio's collective greater good. Their generous sharing achieves a harmony that results in strong group cohesion and chemistry. Despite their individual differences in backgrounds, preferences and styles, these three players have built a bridge - both figuratively and musically. With these songs and lullabies, they manage to transcend their separate relationships and fuse their musical spirits and Island dreams into a much larger whole. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)
