"
Jack West negotiates surprising twists and turns and attains boggling musical heights
remarkable."
Product Description
Big Ideas is the fifth release from 8-string guitar virtuoso Jack West and his ensemble, Curvature. Produced by Lee Townsend, who specializes in recordings of an interdisciplinary, cross-genre nature by contemporary composers and improvisers (Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, Charlie Hunter), this recording is a perfect fit for both musician and producer. First class players include drummer Scott Amendola, marimba player Joel Davel, and cellist Mark Summer. Each of these musicians has developed his reputation based on his distinct approach to his instrument-the perfect combination for West and the right timing for producer Lee Townsend to step in. West's strikingly original compositions, his soulful slide-guitar work and the band's seamless ensemble playing have drawn rave reviews.

Customer Reviews:
Mumy Music is truly perfection!.......2006-11-11
Bill Mumy proves it for the sixth time with "With Big Ideas". From the title track to "Save Me a Seat on the Aisle" each song is very well done. I think this album, along with each of the previous albums, is a fine example of Bill Mumy Music at its absolute finest. I listen to it all the time from home to car and even while on the stairmaster at the gym! The lyrics are inspiring, the music is amazing, the vocals are exceptional and the musicians are sensational! Buy it, listen to it and enjoy it!
Excellent music!.......2006-11-10
I'm no music expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I do know good music when I hear it. Bill Mumy has an extraordinary blend of rock/country/blues sounds that go back to my very roots. For me it's great 70's music morphed into today's world with a large portion of just plain, pure talent. It's not often I purchase a CD that doesn't have at least one song that's not quite up to the rest, but this CD is definitely the exception!
Yes, Bill Mumy is "Will Robinson" from the 60's Lost in Space TV series - along with many other great acting roles - past and present. My only regret is that I spent so many years unaware of his remarkable musical talent.
This is Mr Mumy's most recent album and I encourage all to purchase it. You will not regret it! And while you're at it do a little search of Mr Mumy's other albums. Each one is a musical treat worth much more than it's cost and each is a treasure all should have as well!
CD BRILLIANCE!.......2006-11-10
This brand new cd out of Bill Mumy is one of a kind! Each song has a life of its own. His voice is better than ever...rich, soft, strong, tender, beautiful and very powerful! If you don't have this cd in your life, you are missing out! After this cd, you will want to collect all of his cds! These songs make you feel rejuvenated, renewed and born again! There are a lot of special feelings here on earth, and this one will make you have a feeling all of its own. Each song was brilliantly written by Bill which is another reason it is so special! Bill writes and does all of his music! A lot of hard work and talent went into this album as all of his albums! Other talents on this album are Gerry Beckley with harmony vocals, keyboards, octave mandolin, Steve Bishop - pedal steel and lap steel, Carlos Cordova - bass, Russ Kunkel - drums and percussion and Gary Stockdale - piano on "Mystery Road." A combination of talent at its finest! I cannot even count the times I have listened to it already! It's hard to take it out of your cd player at home and in the car - Only until he makes a new one will that happen!
10 STARS **********DOUBLE THE RATINGS!!!
Music the way it should be.......2006-11-10
For someone like me who has been listening and playing music for 35 years, it's very unfortunate that music is just not like it used to be...well almost. Until you discover someone like Bill Mumy, recording and playing music the way they did when music was something you listened to and not felt through massive speaker systems. . Bill's new CD, With Big Ideas is a refreshing copulation of story book songs that reminisce music back in the early 70s with a touch of the modern sounds mixed in. The title track, With Big Ideas is a wonderful masterpiece and there isn't a song on the CD that you won't find intriguing and wonderful. Cherokee Books, about a local Comic Book store, is the kind of song that takes you back to your childhood when everything was fun and problems where something you knew nothing about. This is the kind of music that will make your troubles go away. Well, at least while the CD is playing :)
With Big Ideas is the best of Mumy Music! .......2006-11-06
Bill Mumy has done a first-class, first-rate and exceptional job with this album! It is loaded with fourteen powerful songs and it's very easy to become addicted to any of them or all of them! I honestly can say that I do not ever want to stop listening to these tunes. Each song has incredible lyrics, blended with perfect music and polished with outstanding vocals! It's hard to pick any one favorite, because I love them all. I will say Mystery Road is quite a rocker that could easily become a hit. I think Rising Falls is a very impressive song and it really demonstrates that this is perfect music. From rockin' songs like Mystery Road, Overdue, and A Little Goes A Long Way to mellow songs like The Fire, A Man Of His Word and Missing The Missing. I feel this album has a little something for all musical appetites!

What an excellent two'fer from Les and Larry Elgart!.......2007-07-04
If you remember American Bandstand, you probably remember "Bandstand Boogie" by Les and Larry Elgart as its theme song. The Elgarts presented a string of succesful big band albums in the 50s and 60s. This collection features renditions of Gershwin tunes, and the classic "Slaughter on Eighth Avenue" recorded in 1958 and 1961. Great sounds of the big bands from the Elgarts!!

Unsung Power Pop for 2002!!.......2002-12-26
their major label debut, 'You Are Here', showed the group advanced songwriting and pop savvy. the new 'Big Ideas' is even better...a leap forward in both their pop and rock sides have elevated a good band into a great one...they may not be on a major label anymore, but 'Big Ideas' is a major follow up and one great record...r.i.y.l. Cloud Eleven, the Flashing Lights, Matthew Sweet, the Posies, Teenage Fanclub
"Big Ideas" should make Big Impact.......2002-12-24
I've been a CHURCHILLS fan since the first moment I heard "Beautiful", the opening track off of their 2000 release entitled "You Are Here." In an era when a lot of "rock" sounds more like rap and "country" sounds more like pop, a trip to the local CD store can turn into a downright frightening experience. Maybe I'm just getting older, but I find myself running back to my high school record collection more and more often these days. The Churchills are one exception to that rule. With them, I can have the kind of sounds I enjoy and still feel like some young, hip (do people even say "hip" anymore?) dude who's on the cutting edge of the music scene! Actually, I coaxed myself out of an early semi-retirement from writing reviews only for the fact that I heard they had a new album out.
Half a minute into their latest effort, "Big Ideas", and I remembered why I dig this band so much. The opening guitar riff of "Lights Are On But No One's Home" gives a first impression of some young modern rock band. A closer listen, however, reveals complex harmonies and chord structures (courtesy of Ron Haney & Bart Schoudel) and clever rhythm changes (Alex Smolinski)... evidence of a well-crafted and unique musical style. Their infectious hooks are reminiscent of the 1980's more melodic groups (Squeeze, Split Enz, etc.), but with a vibe that's commercial enough to deserve heavy rotation on Top-40 radio stations nationwide. "Close My Eyes" is the tune that's stuck in my head at the moment, and the year's Best Ballad Award would go to "Smile." It's sung with a perfect vocal delivery that requires none of the overdub-laden production techniques so favored by many of today's recording artists.
One of their lyrics goes, "She thinks I'm a star..." Well folks, she may not be far from the truth. I plan on seeing a lot more of this band in the near future. Happy listening...

I LOVE THESE GUYS!.......2006-06-18
i love this CD, and I love these guys. I have met them many many times and every time they manage to astound me with there amazing sound and wonderful personalities. They are soooo much fun to hang out with and talk to!!! Anyone who has written a review saying that they dont like this music and therefore no one else should is weird...I understand if you dont like the music but you can not say that they dont have creativity and they dont rock...because when you've met them as many times as I have...they become the best friends who could ever have!!
:gag:.......2005-10-02
zero stars. who actually listens to this crap? frickin' A make good charlotte look like the modern saviors of rock music. no substance, no meaning, no nothing. this is "music" at it's absolute worst. I'd almost recommend a britney spears record before this one, only because BS is more memorable. please do yourself a favor and skip over this terrible excuse for a musical act.
Frickin' A? More like Frickin' Awful!.......2005-07-26
I would have given this album zero stars if the Amazon rating system would have allowed it. This band is as terrible as their name. I cannot stress this enough. Bands this bad get signed after the media has exploited and over-exposed the genre-of-the-week until there's no juice left. Record labels never quit when they are ahead and so Frickin' A gets signed after being scraped from the bottom of the barrel.
Seriously, even if this style of music appeals to you this band probably won't. Every band in this genre is better than Frickin' A, even the sucky ones. There is nothing here to sink your teeth into and it sounds as though the album was produced extra-wimpy because someone thought Blink 182 was way too heavy. From the cover picture it almost looks like one of those groups a sleazy record label creates by picking members based on how cute pre-teen girls will find them. I say pre-teen because even 13 year old girls deserve more credit for taste in music. Any male this group appeals to must me a delicate little flower indeed.
They have the worst name EVER! Could it be any more cutesy? With a name this bad it's no surprise they can't write a decent song, songs have more than two words and they couldn't even get that right when naming the band.
Poor Rick Springfield. The butchering of Jesse's Girl was uncalled for and makes the original shine like a diamond and the original wasn't all that great in the first place.
Great CD.......2005-04-02
This is one of the greatest CD's that I have ever purchased. I can't say there is a song on the album that I skip by when I'm listening to it. I think what makes this album so likeable is that the songs deal with stuff that everyone has had experience with at some point. Break ups, fantasys, trends, etc. Their new single Jessie's Girl is an EXCELLENT cover of Rick Springfields song and is doing extremely well in the ranks. I think this is only the beginning of Frickin' A's existance and much bigger and better things are going to come from them in the future. And if you think their CD is good, wait til you hear their live performances. You can't truley appreciate the band until you see them live in concert, the guys are all friendly and fan-oriented. I can't wait to see them succeed!
Absolute worst album of the year............2005-03-21
Unless you are 15 years old and never listened to the radio, you have heard this "band" 1000 times already. The most derivative, marketing department produced, teen-mag inspired catch phrased, excuse for a record I think could ever be unleashed on the public. It is mass-market targeted so precisely as to be diabolically cynical. Someone is laughing all the way to the bank, and anyone who gives it anything but 1star must fall into the category of the first sentence or is truly oblivious to the world around them. This "band" is either painfully ashamed at what the label did to them, or they are totally ignorant of what the word CREATIVE means.

I picked this disc up after seeing KCQ live in Columbus,Ohio. Great live act, and I was worried I wouldn't like the recordings. How wrong I was! The music is twangy, but the production values are fresh and interesting. Virginia is an especially fantastic song in this regard. This is a sweet, mellow, smart album and I highly recommend it.

When I first heard "Big Comet Headed for Earth" by Jack West and Curvature, it seemed like it came from nothing I've ever heard before and was written directly for me. It is one of the freshest, sexiest, most exhuberant, and musically brillant CD's I've ever heard. The latest release, "Big Ideas", proves that West's compositions and concepts have only grown deeper, more soulful and sophisticated while the individual and ensemble playing has reached masterful heights.

DAN MARKELL - BIG IDEAS
An artist coming out of Burbank California, with an album of material that for some reason, reminds me of the songwriting behind XTC' sound with just a touch of Beatles influence, though the songs found here aren't really of that style, just the general feeling.
The various songs featured on this album take a number of different influences, with many of the tracks relying on an acoustic sort of backdrop, while there's a cool organ sort of sound that's found on "Should Be You", which is listed as a Wurlitzer Electric piano & certainly gives a much different sound to the song than an ordinary piano might.
Pick tracks are quite a few, the highlights being closer "Do It All Again", "Element Of Chance", which kicks along with a great rocking pace & "First Kid On The Block". There are quite a number of people Dan has to thank on this album, with various guests & these people all help to give us a good listening experience.
