A rivetting acoustic guitarist who's very funny.......1998-10-27
There should be a category called "rhythmo-sardonics" where you'd find David Hughes, Loudan Wainwright, Randy Newman and other seriously funny singer-songwriters. However, you'll probably find him under "folk music". His previous album "Active in the Parish" was a Q Magazine Folk Album of the year in 1997, but Hughes' "folk" is a sophisticated guy struggling to be "sensitive" with his tongue firmly in his cheek. In "50 Yards of..." his witty and wicked lyrics are combined with seemless musicianship and crisply clean production, as you would expect from an artist who acknowledges as his mentor the great master Bert Jansch, with whom he toured for a couple of years in the early 1990s. Great stuff this, from a true artist.
