Sea shanties are like beets..........2004-06-06

you either love 'em or hate 'em. If you love 'em, get this disc. One of the leads, the charismatic Jonathan Eberhart, is exceptional. He shines on track 5, "The Cruiser Baltimore"; "Solid Fas" sung to the tune "Shenanodah"; and "Come Down, You Roses", track 9. This group- composed of non-professional singers, each with day-jobs in the DC area- approached the material with a passion for research and love of the genre. Several songs came from primary research done by the group themselves, and are previously unrecorded. The liner notes, 14 pages long, are a model of CD scholarship. The only weak song is track three, where accompanied by several instruments- guitar, mandolin, banjo- "Otho's Song". Fortunately, the disk is mostly performed a cappella, with a few pieces accompanied by a single concertina. My two favorites- track 6, "Hogeye Man", for some real mid-19th century baudiness; and track 11 "Johnson Girls", from Florida c. 1940, contain lyrics pieced together from research as they were originally deemed "unprintable"-

Hogeye Man--

Her long golden hair hangin' down to her knees.

(With a hogeye;
Railroad navvy with a hogeye.
Row ashore with a hogeye, oh,
