Songs of the Circle
Songs of the Circle
Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
I'm so pleased to have released my new CD, Songs of the Circle. This CD was inspired by all the wonderful circles that I am part of and all the circles that I am invited to touch with song. Through my music, I have the incredible opportunity to come and go through the lives of many, under all kinds of circumstances; to join heart and heartbeat for the highest good. Again and again I am touched by the deep love, compassion, strength and wisdom exhibited by my fellow two-leggeds. Again and again I am inspired and encouraged by the pure and authentic power of people raising voices with loving intent.
So let's sing, drum, breathe, dance, feel, heal! And in so doing we will free our creativity, our optimism, our power to act on behalf of our blessed Earth Mother and our ability to hold a vision of beauty for the future. May we honor the elements that make up our physical being, the plants that feed and heal us, the creatures that teach us and the Spirit world ! that guides us. May each one of us find the gift that we came here to offer, along with the courage to offer it! In this way we will join our unique gifts and form a mighty circle of power from which only goodness can result. Let it be so. Blessings, Leah Wolfsong

On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons
Customer Reviews:
On any list of great "kids" CDs you will love too........2007-03-28
My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.
This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.
"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.
It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.
great for kids, great for adults!.......2007-02-27
for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.
favorite.......2007-01-10
This cd stays in our car stereo for weeks and weeks. We sing a long and our 3 yr old likes it too.
Disappointing.......2006-06-01
I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.
Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29
I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

Escape to the Caribbean without ever leaving home!.......2002-07-21
Brannan Lane has packed the entire Caribbean onto one small disc. From the bright,
bouncy opening track, "Welcome," to the sign off "Until Then," this CD will transport you
to an island getaway. What stands out about this project is the multitude of unique sounds
and instruments, from steel drums and pan flute to tropical birds, rain,
and waterfalls. Brannan creatively combines these sounds and instruments, enhancing a
varied selection of simple, pleasing melodies. Are you stressed out? Let the lilting rhythm
of the "Caribbean Sea" wash away those tension lines. Do you need a pick-me-up? The
percussive bonanza featured in "Fire Dance" will get you going on a positive note! Do you
need music to dream by? "Stars to the Sea" will take you to the ocean at night, as the
constellations pour themselves into the horizon. Have you visited the Caribbean before?
"Market Sq" will let you return, right back to the middle of a busy intersection with an
open market! I recommend putting this CD on "repeat play." Then try to avoid calling
your travel agent! --Jeff Bjorck
Refreshing and imaginative, this CD is a winner!.......1999-07-11
Brannan Lane's debut, CARIBBEAN DREAM, is a refreshing dose of fun and good cheer in a usually somber and dour musical genre. Using a vast array of electronic keyboards, Brannan has fashioned a sonic voyage to a tropical island, complete with steel drums and pan pipes. The music is relaxing even while it makes you want to get up and dance (which it does on some songs). The mood is bright, sunny, and full of life. In addition, the recording is very well-produced and performed. CARIBBEAN DREAM can stand toe-to-toe with many releases from major labels, and usually come out ahead. For sheer musical bravado and creativity, Brannan Lane has few equals this year. If you are looking for a good time, grab your checkbook or credit card and order this CD. You won't be disappointed!
Fun in the Sun !.......1999-06-22
Brannan Lane has created a wonderful, relaxing, CD. Amazing memories of the Barbados flood my mind whenever this CD is spinning. Sitting back, closing my eyes - I can picture the white sandy beach with the swaying palm trees - remembering all the "fun in the sun".
This CD is professionally done and captures your imagination of the Islands. It will bring back Caribbean memories and touch your soul if you have been to the islands - or it will create visions for you, if you haven't. But all in all - this CD gives you the Island feeling all around - and watch your feet - you will feel it tapping :)
Heather Baskey, Mississauga, Ontario - Canada
WOW! What a CD!.......1999-06-08
Brannan has become one of my favorite artists. Caribbean Dream is such an uplifting experience, and makes me smile. I love all the detailed and intricate sounds, and am amazed how it all comes together into a wonderful compilation. It is hard to pick a favorite track, but here are some of my favorites: Market Sq., St. Tom Tom, Caribbean Sea, Rasta Pasta, Rain Forest, Distant Past, okay.....all of them! As you can tell I really like this CD! I think this is Brannan's only one, and I am anxious for another one to be released. Brad Chambers

My first graders love this cd!.......2005-08-28
Music is so important in the classroom-and at home. This cd is great. The music is fun and the words are meaningful. I hope to get the whole set!
Sure Fire for Prechoolers!!.......2005-01-14
I've taught music enrichment classes for preschoolers for over ten years and the Allards' recordings are THE BEST! They truly understand the musical and physical needs of young children. All songs are musically excellent and great to sing and listen to, with lots for kids to do with their hands and bodies. Best of all this music is really age-appropriate, unlike so much "children's music" out there. You'll wonder how you ever lived without them! Kids LOVE this music!
Music grown ups can listen to too!.......2002-11-06
I loved this CD--very upbeat. Short songs for kids but great musicianship for grown ups.

Heavenly choir.......2003-07-05
Absolutely gorgeous a capella quartet. Stunning and soothing music. Highly recommended.
Landini; the dawn of the Renaissance.......2003-04-27
True to thier artistry the A4 conveys Landini as a courtly master; subtle and flowing. Thier singing radiates with the freshness of May.
Landini can be likened to Duccio as Palistrina to Giotto. Duccio is not a painter of angles or the other-worldy but humans on earth. Yet they are not humanized in the Renaissance sense for they lack rotunda and gravity. Rather, they are delicate and "float" and retain something of the soaring intensity and expressive flavor of Medieval art. Yet they are very human and with Duccio as with Landini one can perceive the dawn of the Renaissance.
Like a sunset to sunrise the CD ends with the piece it began (Echo la primavera) singing it with more expansion and reflection. Not bad since the piece is so short. Perhaps the A4 wants to convey an end of a journey or "My end is my begining."

While I'm more used to this music with instruments, at least
portative organ this being Landini, Anonymous 4's is what used to be called a valid perfomance. The snatches of documentation for performance practice we have of this period certainly don't rule out an all vocal approach. I've been a musician long enough to know that given the material and the ability of the musicians they will try everything and I'm sure all vocal renditions were done if an instrument wasn't available. Landini was a part of a rather refined group and his music is very subtle. You can't perform his music as if it was a contra dance without distorting it.
While I'm disappointed, and frankly amazed, that anyone could use this a background music for reviewing a paper it isn't the fault of either the listener who can do what he likes or of the preformers who do a good job.
The performance is very good their intonation is some of the best.

Instead of going round and round and round trying to narrow a meandering genre for Circle Game: Folk Music for Kids, Music for Little People limited its songwriting players to a certain era. So break out your bandana and loosen up about letting the kids wear tie-dye, because a hippy-happier mood is hard to find these days. It's not that the 13 songs collected here serve only to spread good vibes--"You've Got a Friend" does more to remind us how we'd feel without one, and "Puff the Magic Dragon" could knock the wind out of even the most freewheeling spirits--but the boys and girls enlisted to perform these tracks clearly were feelin' groovy come recording time. "If I Had a Hammer (the Hammer Song)" and "If You Want to Sing Out," both led by what sounds like a mighty and stuffy-nosed 6-year-old, carry the lyrical capacity to temporarily ease 21st-century strife, real or imagined. So do "Happiness Runs" and "Moon Shadow," which even when delivered by crooners too young to wax philosophical can't help but impart a near-mystical hopefulness. "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Both Sides Now," and "The Circle Game" pull a similar sleight of hand, sparking a winding, shifting sort of introspection. For a finale, "59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" couldn't be more fitting. Spin this disc and count on not only raising just-aroused consciences, but also on kick-starting a renewed karmic wave of harmony and lyrical insight. --Tammy La Gorce

fabulous.......2002-10-24
I think this CD is fabulous. It has a whole lot of songs from my younger days, sung by children. I play this in the car and both the kids and I enjoy it. I am asked over and over to play it. Recommend!
Fabulous Folk.......2001-12-07
Really nice CD. My son & I enjoy it together - it's fun to share these classic songs with him and he enjoys the kids voices very much.
Chipmunk Folk.......2001-11-19
I bought this CD specifically to help me sing folk songs to my newborn -- I didn't anticipate the songs to be sung by children in such high voices and at speeded up tempos! It's nothing I can sing along to, let alone barely listen to. Maybe small children would enjoy it but adults would probably find it as irritating as I do!

Circle Time.......2006-11-10
To be honest I haven't heard this CD yet. I ordered it for a friend who has young children.
What a yawn!! For insomniacs only!!! Dryer than a dessert!!.......2006-01-08
This review is based on the samples on amazon.com
and a a tape of Lisa Monet's I bought a few years ago...
She may have a good singing voice, but it sounds
so slow and lifeless...and very high!! The samples I heard
for this CD on the amazon page were so boring and slow--
and the sound effects she made during some of the samples
like in that teapot song-- stick with the singing
slowly--!!! Muffin man song -- could a song be sung
any slower!!! VERY lackluster, very dry, her voice
was good but not great-- and the guitar added to
the lethargy!!! Would of gave this CD 0 stars
if no stars were possible!!
I reccomend this to anyone who has insomnia,
and listening to this as a substitute for
sleeping pills!!! One might get addicted
to sleeping pills- and that could be bad for
someone, but this CD has the same effect as
sleeping pills as they both will put you to sleep,
and this CD is a healthier safer way to get to sleep!!
For some good Children's music that is very upbeat,
I reccomend Greg and Steve, Red Grammer, Gary The Happy
Pirate.........
Simple, Singable, Beautiful vocals.......2003-06-30
This is a wonderful, basic CD to add to your child's collection. Most of the songs and poems are familiar, or will quickly become so, if you don't already know them. The single soprano voice with acoustic guitar is soothing for a child, but still lively enough for dancing to the more rollicking numbers. My daughter started listening to it as a 4 month old--every time the first song started (Happy and you know it...) she would start kicking and smiling, anticipating the song. She would often be content in her play pen the entire time the CD played.
What can I say? My son loves it!.......2003-02-05
My 2 year old adores this CD. He sings the songs even when it's not playing. One thing I enjoy about it is that it's low key. All the songs whether faster or slower seem to have the same tempo.
I guess it depends on the temperment of your child if you'd like it or not. Mine is musical with tons of positive ENERGY. Whatever the case, it's no action-adventure. It's more like a cuddly drama.
Not that great.......2003-01-14
I have to agree with some others in that this CD is very slow. In fact, it puts my kids to sleep rather than provoke a sing along or dance. Lisa Monet doesn't have a bad voice but the CD sounds as though you were back in the 70's with the wiggly voice and single guitar music. If you are looking for a CD that is calming and somewhat boring than this is your CD. I haven't found a great kids CD yet, but this definitly was NOT not even close.
