Editorial Reviews
Chicago Parent, August '99
It's a great day for me when I listen to a children's music CD that towers above almost everything else I've heard. And to think that I almost missed this one...
Product Description
13 original songs beloved of children and adults alike. Winner of the 1999 Children's Music Web - Special Judges Award. 1996 Juno Award nominee and 1997 Pacific Music Industry Award nominee for Best Children's Recording. INCLUDES the zany Spike Jones tribute "The Wild Bunnies of Kitsilano", the mini opera "I Don't Wanna Sing On Your Song" and Rick's celebration of special needs children "Angels Do", with guest vocalist Shari Ulrich. "Angels Do" has become an anthem for the special needs community since release of the FACTOR funded video of the song currently airing on the Disney Channel, Knowledge Network and Treehouse TV. An enhanced CD of "Angels Do" and "Grandma" was released in the UK in 1998.

falls short.......2006-08-06
Sure I love the Beatles. And while I don't have much of an ear for classical, there is a lot I like. And I'm a sucker for rock music with real string sections. But this CD just doesn't hold my interest; it sounds like elevator classical. Who'd've thunk that one could make a string arrangement of Yesterday or Yellow Submarine that would bore me?
Perhaps if I could discern the "wittily chopped up [variations comparable to those] which Mozart and Beethoven wrote on the well-known songs of their own day," I'd like it more. But my wife (who plays in a local symphony, and does have an ear for classical motifs) also finds the songs uninspiring.
The only tracks which held my interest were Help and Can't Buy Me Love.
Ah, the beuty of the cello:.......2006-06-04
Okay, I have no idea why people are judging this based purely on lablings: quite frankly, it should be about the music, and nothing else.
Now, with that said, I have to say this is one of the most beutiful arrangements for a Band I've ever heard. The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Phil have done a phenominal job at creating something amazing and new out of something amazing and old. I have to say that this is for any fan of the Beatles, classical music, and anything cello related. I'd deffinately suggest the buy, as the entire album is gorgeous.
Oh, and Cello Choirs are probobly the best string ensembles in existance (biased, yes: but that's okay, because cello deserves my bias)
Very well done.......2005-09-19
First of all, I LOVE the Beatles, and I LOVE Classical music. Personally I do not care how Amazon lists this CD.
That being said, I have played many arrangements of Beatles songs (mostly for string quartet) and they all leave something to be desired. These arrangements are bright, colorful and imaginative. Some of the songs have quite lengthy introductions that can have even the most devoted Beatles fan without liner notes in hand skipping forward to find out exactly what song they are listening to. I especially loved Norwegian Wood (I almost like it more than the real deal!). I have long been a fan of cello choirs, and for those who can't get enough cello this will be like a trip to heaven! If you like this CD, also try out the London Viola Sound
BEATLES IN CLASSICS.......2004-04-30
This is the title of a CD I have by the 12 Cellists Of The Berlin Philharmonic.Obviously the same one with a different sleeve.
Yet anyone who claims to know anything about the Beatles knows that "Lennon/McCartney" was agreed on at the beginning whoever wrote the song
You're missing the point...............2003-04-15
While I am sympathetic to the concerns of the other reviewers' issues with the song credits, with all due respoect to Beatlemanics, they can get a little carried away with Beatles trivia and forget that we're talking about MUSIC, something they neglected entirely. I found this CD to be filled with very creative arrangements, that were beautifully and flawlessly executed. This "Dandy Dozen" puts a spin on the Fab Four that takes them into a different dimension, artistically speaking, far from the dad-whistled muzak that another reviewer mistook it for. My only objection was that the recording quality was not the highest quality, and a little "noisy".

Sibelius wrote a large number of songs, but they are not terribly well known, nor are there very many great ones. Like his piano music, he wrote them primarily for the money. Nevertheless, there are some masterpieces, particularly the lengthy orchestral ballad, "The Rapids- Rider's Brides," which has its own opus number (33), and which directly foreshadows the music of the evocative tone poem Luonnotar. Sibelius and several other composers orchestrated a fair number of his songs, which is a good thing because his piano writing was seldom very effective, his musical ideas being naturally orchestral in nature. This award-winning collection offers 18 orchestral arrangements of Sibelius's finest efforts in the genre, excellently sung by Jorma Hynninen, the great Finnish baritone of his generation. The music is well worth knowing. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Sibelius.......2000-11-17
Many of these songs were not originally written with an orchestral accompaniment in mind. But orchestra brings out new colors in these works, that I hadn't realized before when listening to them with piano accompaniment.
Hynninen sings beautifully throughout, and is in my opinion at his best in these songs. He has a special kind of light high baritone voice, that doesn't always work well in opera, but in Sibelius it works fantastically. Understanding the language and the cultural background of these songs helps as well.

Andy Williams is the best!.......2007-02-01
Just saw Andy Williams at Branson this Christmas! Fabulous! What a great man and entertainer! We purchased this album because Andy sings the song "Words" at his concert but he no longer sells this album in Branson. Amazon is the only place to get this great album! Classic!
Greatest of Andy Williams Works! I give it 5+++++stars!!.......2000-08-22
I just want to second the motion that reviewer Jennifer Leskala has written here on behalf of this album of truly wonderful music. I think it's Andy's best ever. And, I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for it because, I, too, witnessed the dance performance Natalia Melony gave to Andy's work of art. Perhaps you will be able to envision in your mind a beautiful long-haired blonde goddess dancing divinely, and twirling about to this beautiful music.....and I think you WILL see the "Vision" of her as you listen to these incredible pieces of music, done as only Andy Williams can do. Truly one of my favorite albums of all time. It is one you will treasure and want to listen to time and time again. Thanks, Andy, for the wonderful entertainment you continue to give the world. Al Reinking
This is Andy Williams finest work!.......2000-08-13
I happen to believe this is Andy's best album. I can listen to it over and over, it is so beautiful, the words written for the classical melodies are perfection. I also love this album so much because I once saw a lessor-known entertainer by the name of, Natalia Melony, do an entire show of dancing to this entire album of songs. She was something to see. The combination of Andy's music with Natalia's beauty and incredible dancing, was breathtaking. It was so incredible it gave me chills up my spine. In case you are wondering who she is, you can join her fan club on Yahoo. Just punch in her name in the Clubs search box. To my amazement, I just found her name listed and joined her club! To anyone thinking of purchasing this CD, you will not be disappointed. It's one of the best albums in my whole collection of music. Thank you. Jennifer Leskala
One of Andy's best albums. Andy has never sounded better!!.......1999-10-30
This album, recorded in London in 1984, is the finest Williams album of the past several years. The unique blending of classical melodies with lyrics makes this album unlike any other you will find. Andy truly did something magical here. With albums like this it is no wonder that Andy has been a world wide favorite for over forty years. This album is a MUST HAVE for any fan of ANDY WILLIAMS. In addition, any lover of classical music will find this an excellent addition to their collections. Thank you ANDY!!!

Customer Reviews:
OK, you have "The Planets"..........2007-01-12
"Gee, I like this piece, 'The Planets'. I wonder if this guy Holst wrote anything else?" Welcome, music lover. This collection is the next step after Holst's most popular piece. The otherworldliness of the "Hymns from the Rig Veda" may surprise you, as they prepare you for the world of "Savitri", based on a folk tale from India. Want to fall in love all over again? Young Janet Baker will melt your heart as the heroine of this 3 character/1 act opera, conducted by the composer's daughter. A stunning performance, in lovely 1960's sound. This set is worth it for the first disc alone.
I'm not as familiar with some of the other performances, but the pieces are a good sampling of Holst's "other" works, and the "Moorside Suite" will blow you away. It is arguably the best piece ever written for a brass band.

Customer Reviews:
What a Great Deal!.......2002-11-17
There is no need to debate the merits of either of the two major works featured on this two-CD set. Both Carmina Burana and The Planets are sweeping and amazingly beautiful works. The orchestration, the melodies, the grandeur, and the timelessness are all beautifully captured in these readings by David Hill and Sir Charles Mackerras.
While the Bournemouth Symphony (Carmina Burana) and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (The Planets) may sound like obscure orchestras, the sonic excellence and maturity on these two CDs are enough to rival any other recording I've heard of these pieces. O Fortuna whips into a raging torrent and lights a fervent fire that doesn't extinguish until its terror returns twenty-four movements later. Mars burns with the fury and tumult of war, and Jupiter's jovial boisterousness is displayed in full, while its passionate central lyrical section overflows with expressiveness. These recent (1989 and 1995) DDD performances feature sound that literally fills the room. The engineering is perfect in that it serves to underscore the sweeping scope of these pieces.
The other piece, the Ballet Music from the Perfect Fool could be considered a time filler, though it is by no means to be considered a "weak" or "lesser" piece. Its merits are clear, and, as with the rest of the other two pieces, the orchestra brings out its best qualities.
Combine this expert playing, engineering, and conducting with a great price for a double-CD and you get an undeniably good deal. I typically shy away from inexpensive recordings, fearing inferior quality. Such is not the case here. These recordings would sell just as well if the price were doubled, because the recordings are at least that good. Buy it for yourself and find out what I mean.

Muzak of the Fab Four.......2007-01-30
THE BEATLES GREATEST HITS at first glance is classic "music of your life" fare-- stuff that plays quietly in the background as you pretend to read an old magazine while waiting for an oil change or chiropractic appointment. But look again-- there's actually life stirring behind these orchestral cover versions!
"Beatlephonic Medley" is lively from the outset and stays that way, as the orchestra skips rapidly through samples of "Got To Get You Into My Life," "Eight Days A Week," "Penny Lane," "Yellow Submarine," "Get Back," "Day Tripper," "Ticket To Ride" and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," all in barely over four minutes!
The only non-Beatles track here, "Mull Of Kintyre," opens with a lone female voice, followed by some gently expanding music, and then the full choir. The song has a rousing finale that seems to include every bad bagpiper in Edinburgh and beyond.
For "elevator music," "I Am The Walrus" is quite nice, staying remarkably true to the original-- the violins "singing" the "goo-goo-ga-joobs" are most impressive. The Royal Choral Society's efforts on the SGT PEPPER'S intro are a real hoot. This six-minute track includes a hint of "With A Little Help From My Friends," which is equally grotty. Then follows a lovely "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," lovely that is, until that chorus starts up again. The coda is the predictable SGT PEPPER'S outro.
The other selections on THE BEATLES GREATEST HITS are equally interesting. Anyone who appreciates quality orchestrations and also likes the music of Lennon & McCartney is certain to enjoy this album.
