About the Artist
Los Llaneros (Los Yah-NEH-Ros) bring to the stage the often energetic and sometimes haunting melodies of the Colombian/Venezuelan Llanos or plains that surround the vast basin of the Orinoco River in South America. The Llanos is a geographically and culturally unique and little known area of Latin America, and its music evolved from the contact between nomadic Indians and Jesuit settlers five hundred years ago. Due to the distinctly characteristic syncopations and harp techniques used in the music of the Llanos, it is rarely performed in its authentic style outside the region, and hence it remains one of Latin America's best kept secrets. Los Llaneros have won several awards at international music competitions held in Latin America. They tour internationally and have been featured in a variety of TV and radio shows. They recently provided the musical score for CNN's documentary "Soldiers of Peace," which has been aired world-wide several times.

Product Description
"Macapay" is a must-own album! Most members of the group are originally from the Llanos region of South America, the vast plains that stretch out along the Orinoco River basin and unite northwestern Venezuela with eastern Colombia. The musical traditions of the Llanos are among the richest and most diverse in Latin America. This album reflects the breadth of musical styles from the Llanos, brilliantly sung and played on folk harp, cuatro (a four stringed guitar characteristic of the region), and maracas. Music and instruments from other Latin American regions are also featured. The singers blend their voices in haunting melodies one moment, then let them soar with bursting energy the next moment. This is a most delightful roller-coaster effect which pays tribute to this group's unlimited capacity for musical expression. The album contains 14 songs (51 minutes).

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat, authentic sound.......2002-12-05

I borrowed this CD from the library, and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I love the energetic rhythms, and the fact that there are both female and male lead vocals. The traditional instruments are beautifully and skillfully played. Since I can't keep the library's CD, I definitely plan to buy one for myself!

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get more authentic than this...!.......2002-10-27

This album is a rarity. First, it features the seldom-heard-in-the-U.S. music of the Colombo-Venezuelan cowboys. Second, the leader of the group is a woman! Pretty unusual for the male dominated culture of the region. The cd contains moments of wonderful musicianship which juxtapose the simple lifestyle of the cowboys with the complexity of their music. "Orinoco" is a breath-taking jewel. It includes, oddly enough, the Mexican standard "Rogaciano" as well as a masterful rendition of "Pajaro Campana" where the harpist shines!
My suggestion: Get this recording!
