4 out of 5 stars Kenton in Action at Newport !.......2001-08-18

This is an interesting package that provides the Kenton fan the opportunity to compare three distinct editions of Stan's orchestra. The sound quality is excellent on the first two discs, slightly less on the third. The '59 band really screams on this one, featuring one of the best recorded versions of "Intermission Riff". The '63 Mellophone band tears through the set taking NO prisoners, much to the delight of the 4th of July crowd, who can be heard going absolutely nuts at the conclusion of "Malaguena`"!! The 71' band is featured minus Stan, who at the time was recovering from surgery. This does not detract from the thrilling performance presented here. Arranger Ken Hanna's "Macumba suite" is performed and is ample proof that Stan's 70's band was fully equal to the previous bands, capable of heading into wild, unexplored territory with ease !! Detailed notes and great packaging make this well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars A great and versatile voice.......1999-04-09

Leonhardt playing Bach is more my line than that broad category called popular music. Nevertheless, Judy Collins breaks through all the categories through sheer virtuosity and style. 'Anethea' is basically the same plot as Shakespeare's MEASURE FOR MEASURE, and here it is, prefaced and concluded with howls of grief: scalp-tingling. 'Turn, turn, turn' is an audacious adaptation of that most beautiful of Biblical books, Ecclesiastes, and is one of the loveliest songs I know. I am not ashamed to say that it helped me through a period of personal grief. This is a marvellous album to start with, though I think FOREVER is perhaps the definitive collection.

5 out of 5 stars FOLK MUSIC AT ITS BEST.......1998-10-26

This recording is Classic Folk Music at its BEST. Judy Collins is Fantastic on this one. Every song is a piece of folk history. There are songs of love and songs of hope and even great whaling tales. This one is recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival. Listen to the history, from a true folk legend. Every tune strikes a great chord.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to bluegrass music........2001-06-30

24 tracks recorded live in the late 50s/ early 60s, but sounding as fresh and fiery as if they had been performed yesterday. What these musicians (among them Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Clarence Ashley, Doc Watson) do is truly amazing, the sound quality is very good, too. If you like the fiddle and the banjo, you will love this collection. My favourite songs on this collection are the haunting 'Train 45' by the New Lost City Ramblers and the 'Maggie Walker Blues' by Clarence and Doc, but there's lots more to thrill you.

5 out of 5 stars You Must Have This CD.......2001-06-12

I am amazed at how well this stuff has stood up over time. This CD contains some of the best bluegrass I've ever heard, particularly the selections by Jim and Jesse. And half of this CD (the better half, actually) is not bluegrass but old-time mountain music. Some of the selections by Ashley and Watson are haunting. Overall, for both vituosity and sheer energy, the music on this CD is head and shoulders above anything produced today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fine collection of recordings.......2006-08-07

In short: I am on Amazon right now, shopping for this CD because my first one is worn out. Good stuff.

There are many fine recordings on this CD... I have listened to it over and over for the last 10 or so yrs. In addition I have found that people who don't usually listen to country blues seem to enjoy this collection. It has an airy and intimate recording quality.

Specifically: The whole 1st half of the CD is great... The John Hurt recordings are all charming & spirited ('Coffee Blues' is super), as are the Terry/McGhee tunes (check out 'Long Gone.'). Gary Davis' recording of 'Samson & Delilah' shows Mr. Davis at his showtime best. Skip James's 'Devil Got My Woman' and Robt. Wilkens 'Prodigal Son' are, in my opinion, the best versions extant of those performers' best compositions ... i.e. these are must-have recordings. The John Estes tune is a good example of his jugband trio with Yank Rachel and Hammy Nixon, and 'That'll Never Happen No More' by Dave Van Ronk is a clever reworking of the Blind Blake version.

4 out of 5 stars A must-have for Stonesphiles..........2003-05-16

A very nice collection of songs from late 50's to early 60's at the NFF...most of these are on the 3-cd set that was recently released. However a handful are not on that set - including a powerful 9:30 rendition of Rev.Robert Wilkins classic Prodigal Son, which of course was covered by the Stones on Beggar's Banquet. Here you find the inspiration for the Stones version, which included only a handful of the many verses that Wilkins' had...also, you hear how Charlie and Keith appropriated the guitar and percussion (Wilkins' foot, here) parts for the Stones' version. A must-hear experience!
