Whew! If you thought Jodeci and Dru Hill were the masters of putting sex into soul, think again. The Time are anything but subtle: there are tracks laced with heavy breathing, words like "straddle" and lines like "I wanna get you off, baby" are commonplace, and they're completed with a sultry style of soul that is equally as enticing in its uptempo forms (the very '80s-sounding "Jungle Love," "My Drawers") as it is in slow doses (the raw "Chili Sauce" and "If the Kid Can't Make You Come"). Even the more mellow, midtempo funk like "Ice Cream Castles" is addictive. The Time make you realize there's more to old-school funk than just George Clinton and Parliament. --Rebecca Wallwork

It will have you jamming!!!.......2007-07-25
The Time definitely will have you on their dials with this album. Funk music at it's finest. Every song on this album is stellar, especially Jungle Love, and the Bird. I wish that they would get the recognition that they deserve.
yayess!!!.......2007-04-24
The most successful(mainstream wise) of The Time albums...largely in part to the Comedy provided by Morris and Jerome in "purple rain"...this album isn't about Prince though...it's personality screams MORRIS E. DAY..."Chili Sauce" is Halerious!..."if the kid can't make ya cum"...is for the true Time fans. The anthums are of course "Jungle Love"...&"The Bird"...This is an album that should have been the Time's coming out party and launched them into the mainstream audience but like so many bands of the past...they broke up...Success followed quite a bit of the band...Jesse Johnson"s Revue...Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis...Morris was the biggest star but he fizzeled out to say the least...still this album lives on thru the Old School dancefloor's of today...This is a real good taste of Prince's creative side being allowed to live thru the "Drawers" of Morris Day and the Time. This album is a must for those who are taken in by the "Minniapolis Music Sound"...i was and still am...(Mazarati, the family, Tamara and the Scene, Alexander O'neil) the Time were among the pioneers of the Stage showmanship to come fronm the 80's...this album is Danceable and fun!!!
An Unfortunate End To A Great Band...........2007-03-08
We all know the story surrounding The Time. Prince wrote for and produced them and put the group together. Unfortunately because of his alpha male syndrome he exerted too much control over the band until they imploded. Ice Cream Castles reflects the tension that was going on in the group (infighting, Prince's dominance). Somehow with Terry, Jimmy and Monte leaving-well being fired by Prince in the case of Terry and Jimmy, the chemistry seemed no longer to be there. Don't get me wrong, Morris was very charismatic and a great lead man and Jesse Johnson on guitar was simply unbelievable, but the spirit and thrill seems to be gone as it seems as if they are just going through the motion. The album seems as though it is pieced together. The title track "Ice Cream Castles" is a mesmerizing song about love and harmony-which is ironic because there was nothing harmonious about climate the group was working in-I love the song but it does seem a tad bit out of place given the songs that proceed it. The synthed out "My Drawers" is a bit of an oddity-but it'll do. I don't need to talk about "Chilli Sauce" which acts as filler. Morris even uses the same line he uses in Purple Rain-the bit about having "a brass waterbed" and having "an Italian cook". The song "If the Kid Can't Make You Come" is not at all satisfying. Then there are the songs for which the band is best remembered, "Jungle Love" and "The Bird" which are hot tracks and the stand outs on this album.
The Time was an extremely talented R&B/Funk band that was not allowed to flourish. Prince was indeed a genius-this has already been established. The problem is he should have given the group the opportunity to have some artistic freedom (something that he ironically preaches day and night about these days). By the time he "allowed" the group to be involved in the process it was too late-Morris and Jesse were headed on their way out of the door. I think Prince never intended them to be anything more than just an opening act. When they began to outshine and upstage him in their live shows-where the music sounded as good if not better than the studio album-he would pull dirty tricks like demoting them. He played too many games-I mean the stories are legendary I'm surprised they endured as long as they did (which was only 3 or 4 years!). I love Prince he is probably my favorite artist of all time-but The Time is a sore spot for me because I love this band and I long for what they could have been. Who knows what the band would have become-unfortunately we'll never know.
The Clock Was Ticking.......2007-02-18
In the life imitating art category was the Morris Day - Prince feud that ultimately found The Time clocking out of the music scene. Such a rivalry was the plot to the movie, Purple Rain.
Ice Cream Castle features music from the movie and is highlighted by the funk rave-up, The Bird. Even today you have to get those arms moving up & down when the beat heats up.
Another dance club gem is Jungle Love, as My Drawers keeps the pace swift, while the catchy title track has a midtempo clip. The facetious lyrics in Chili and If The Kid Can't Make You Come rounds out one of the most satisfying Prince projects from the 1980s.
Prince was building a recording dynasty with a lineup of artists who would dominate the charts. The Time was arguably the best group from that impressive roster.
Them boys good.......2006-11-23
After the sucess of Purple Rain, The Time seemed destined to be huge. Prince was talented but Morris was a cool a jerk you just wanted to hang out with. The CD includes tehe huge hits Junge Love and The Bird both of which can still get a party started. Also worth noting is the ballad If The Kid Can't Make You Come.

Snow Cones for Pavlov's Puppies.......2007-07-13
Yeah, why not?
With all this technology around us, with music coming at us from all angles, why are ice cream trucks still driving around emitting the same twenty second loop of a glockenspiel playing "Turkey in a Straw"? Why not some new music?
Forget the parents, forget the kids, think of the poor ice cream truck dudes. I bet some new tunes would do wonders for their spirits. I don't know how it is in other regions, but out here we have an epidemic of grumpy ice cream men, which can be a bit of a bummer.
Despite the potential, this is not a boring album. Mike Hearst has undertaken an exercise, which is to write music in the spirit of traditional circus music or ice cream truck music, but make it new and refreshing. Listen for yourself, but I think he pulled it off. It's got calliopes, glockenspiels, the occasional choir, in nice little waltzes and foxtrots, and with enough repetition to approximate the simplicity and feel of the more traditional tunes. But he adds enough variation to keep it palatable. Plus, there are some tasty, sinister undercurrents in these compositions, warbling forays into minor modes, to remind us that the ice cream truck is a parasitic capitalist appendage intruding into the naïve serenity of our playgrounds to extort parents and condition the palates of our children.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

P's best.......2006-07-17
"Ice Cream Man" is by far my fav P album. Lots of laid back beats & flows....a lot more Westcoast influenced than his other sh**. Pick this up if you're a fan of the South or West
this is a classic ya know.......2006-05-07
Just buy it. I mean, Break you off sumptin, check my crackhouse, no more tears, bout it bout it, 1/2 on a dank, is a real solid album from the P durin tha golden years of rap, specially in the south.
Tha Don Makes A Classic Right Next To "Ghetto D".............2006-01-24
Before Master P became the much-maligned, often-satirised lampoon that he is today, he was the owner of a veritable empire- one built on the seminal N'Awlins thump of gladiators like Mac, Soulja Slim and Mystikal. While his output today would certainly suggest otherwise, Master P also held his own against even his most prodigious upstarts, cranking out a string of classics that includes Ghetto D, the first TRU record and Ice Cream Man, widely regarded as Master P's foremost artistic work and one that belongs in the pantheon inhabited by the likes of BG's "Chopper City In The Ghetto" and Juvenile's "400 Degreez".
What separates this recording from the aforementioned Cash Money classics is its seamless incorporation of West Coast sensibilities into its swampy Cajun jambalaya. As all faithful No Limit fiends know, Master P's transplantation from California to the third coast had a marked influence on his musical produce, and this is pronouncedly evident on this record- the thudding, subwoofer-mauling basslines, the layered synths, the hypnotically midtempo rhythms, all coalescing into a thick, arresting sound built for leisurely cruises in the Coupe Deville. While there is nothing startlingly original about this record, its strengths lie in its startling consistency- by all standards this is an incredibly long album (20 tracks, practically none of which are skits), but the quality, from the downtempo thump of the title track to the uncouth, misogynistic but downright funky "Playa From Around The Way" and the horrific dirge of "Bout That Drama", never threatens to wane.
From a lyrical standpoint P casts his net across familiar ground, spinning compelling yarns of murder and narcotics that were so prevalent in early (and hell, modern) N'awlins rap. While the depth of P's commentary never really veers beyond gratuitously callous narratives delivered in a simplistic, honest fashion, it's hard to hold this against him when the album is so grippingly listenable and thoroughly enjoyable. The gems are innumerable- the cess-blowing haze of "1-2 On A Bag Of Dank", the Rick James meets Nino Brown boogie of "How G's Ride", the timeless vitriol of "Bout It Bout It", all radiating the striking sense of immediacy that characterises the very best gangsta rap. The imagery is stark, portraits of P's bleak, filthy psyche unobscured by overproduction or verbose pretension. For such a long album, Ice Cream Man radiates with succinctness- everything on this record aims for the throat, each song a 3 to 5 minute, hook-laden anthem that should put a goofy smile on even the most disillusioned rap connoisseur's face.
Forget the fact that this is the same grisly looking grandpa who dropped the immortal lines "I'm like Tiger 'cause I live in the Woods" and do yourself a favour- pick this record up, settle into the plush leather interior of your lowrider and give this record a spin. You might find that it might become a permanent resident in your disc changer. A remarkable snapshot of the No Limit empire at the height of its creative powers and a vital listen for anybody who couldn't figure out how P managed to shift so many units.
Make Sure It's An Original.......2005-12-06
This album is very good. It is one of Master P's best. The original pressing is very hard to find. Reprints have flooded the market, but those can be considered as worthless. The original pressing has 20 tracks. The rerelease is missing "The Ghetto Won't Change." The original pressing has a blue box on the front cover artwork. The blue box says, "also contains hit singles, Mr. Ice Cream Man and Bout It, Bout It," The rerelease will have FBI warnings and "EMI" on the spine of the album. Either copy is worth having, just don't be scammed into thinking it's an Original and in reality it's a cheap fake. This album is a must have for any Bay Area or No Limit Rap fan. 5 Stars
classic album.......2005-11-26

MR. ICE CREAM MAN!!!.......2007-07-06
When I listen to this CD it brings bak a lot of memories from when I was younger. This CD right here to me is what set it off for Master P. He took note of what Eazy-E did with Ruthless Records and made his own southern version called No Limit Records. But put aside all of the success Master P had with No Limit as an amazing businesmen. This CD is one of the top 10 ever released in rap history period. It's very dynamic and has not only the Bay Area/Richmond, CA feel that a lot of early No Limit releases had but it also has that Dirty Grimy Southern sound that Master P help push to the forefront of the rap scene. If you are a fan of rap and don't have this in your collection your missin out on an very importand piece of the puzzle. . .

'Ice Cream' is a sparsely minimal Punk Funk jerkout that sounds like a distaff version excursion on Disco-era Rolling Stones fronted by the Slits' Ari Up and produced by David Byrne and Brian Eno. Intent on establishing something distinctly potent and exciting, Andy and Tahita formed NYPC in 2005. Now a five-piece with the additional members, Igor (bass) Lou (keyboards) and Sarah (drums), New Young Pony Club provide the kind of tight and bass-heavy future discoid noise currently setting hairs on end up and down the country. Features five versions of 'Ice Cream': Album Version, Extended Edit, Herve Goes Bananas Remix, Metal On Metal Remix and Enhanced Video. Island.

Customer Reviews:
John Brim Comes Back From Obscurity.......2002-01-28
John Brim began playing music as a teenager while growing up in Kentucky. he moved to Chicago in 1945 and over the next two decades he played with John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, Eddie Boyd, Muddy Waters, Jimmy reed and others. When the Blues declined in the 1960's he faded out of the limelight.
This album shows that John Brim can still front a band with style. Backed by top Blues players like Bob Margolin on guitar and the amazing Jerry Portnoy on harmonica, Brim sings with panache, exhibiting that over the intervening years, he's kept up his chops. I'd even recommend that you get yourself a recording of "Ice Cream Man" from the 1950's and compare it to this later version. Very nice indeed.
