5 out of 5 stars The Works.......2007-04-12

The Works is a great piece of awork from Queen. I recomend this for any Queen fan. I got the song Tear It Up stuck in my head for a few days after listening to this album. It really show a renewal for Queen.

5 out of 5 stars I ain't gonna go and see the Rolling Stones no more........2006-09-07

This was the first Queen album I ever bought (on vinyl, of course). It features Queen's last US hit, "Radio Ga Ga". Of course, they continued to be popular in the UK, where this album yielded four hits ("Radio Ga Ga", "I Want to Break Free", "It's a Hard Life" and "Hammer to Fall"). This is a strong Queen album, with a good mix of ballads and rockers, and no bad songs. The CD adds three bonus track; "I Go Crazy" (the b-side of "Radio Ga Ga"), and extended versions of "Radio Ga Ga" and "I Want to Break Free". Most people won't agree with me, but I think that this is Queen's best album.

5 out of 5 stars Quite A Comeback.......2006-08-05

After Hot Space(In my opinion their second to worst album) many people had figured it woud be all downhill from there for this band. This album is a lot more poppy than most of their seventies stuff but it also returns to their hard rock roots. It spawned 4 mega-hits(Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Its A Hard Life and Hammer To Fall). Of course this album can't compare to stuff like Bohemian Rhapsody and other things on previous albums but its definetly their best of the eighties(tied with The Game).

P.S. Most people think Hot Space is Queen's worst album. Actually it's Flash. At least Hot Space has the great song Under Pressure on it. Flash is a soundtrack album to Flash Gordon and its absolutely horrible.

5 out of 5 stars Saving the 80's.......2006-05-18

Like The Game, The Works is a solid album with a couple of classics and no bad tracks. It has two of Queen's biggest songs and is probably their rockiest album since New Of The World (77). Though it only has 9 songs, each one is classy.
1. Radio Ga Ga is a great song. One of their best know from the 80's. Written by Roger it's a nice change from his previous (though excellent) work and would be a sign of his growing song writing abilities.
2. Tear It Up is a nice rocker from Brian. One of their heaviest songs.
3. It's A Hard Life is a gem. Having said that, Freddie's songs on this album are solid, but hardly his best.
4. Man On The Prowl is a nice change of mood. Fast paced, almost a jive, almost Elvis.
5. I Want To Break Free is one of Queen's best. Written by John, the album version is different to the single version. Never really been sure which one I like better.
6. Machine (Back To Humans) is the most experimental song here. Probably the weakest track here but still solid. Freddie's vocal is polished as always.
7. Keep Passing The Open Window is a good song. Like most of the album though, solid without rising to greatness. Written for a movie that wasn't made.
8. Hammer To Fall is another Brian rocker. Great track, pretty standard fare though.
9. Is This The World We Created is a nice closer.
10. I Go Crazy was the B Side to Radio Ga Ga and it's nice that it's included here.

4 out of 5 stars Queen's Return to Fame (4.5).......2006-05-15

Although Queen made a fantastic turn into the 80s decade with their hit album "The Game", their disco-funk album "Hot Space" left them off charts in the United States and other long time fans skeptical. "The Works" marks the hit pop/rock band's return to the top in the UK, featuring several classic hit singles. However, as a full length studio album, "The Works" does not quite stand up Queen's best material. Read on for more.

The album opens with probably the best song Roger Taylor ever composed in his time with Queen. "Radio Ga Ga" is a beautiful, synth-driven pop classic which showcases Queen's ability to still write pop hits. "Tear it Up" is simply an all-out 2 minute rocker, and is well done. "It's A Hard Life" is maybe Freddie Mercury's best contribution to this album, and he pioneers it with his superb vocals and infectious piano line. "Man on the Prowl" is a folk/rockabilly song which is lacks a catchy melody. "Machines" is a little too ridiculous of a song, but has its moments. "I Want to Break Free" was a huge hit off this album, purely a fun pop tune. "Hammer to Fall" is an excellent rock song from Queen, showing that Brian May could still rock out with his guitar anytime he wanted to. "Is This the World We Created..." is a haunting melody, backed beautifully by Mercury's gorgeous vocals. "I Go Crazy" is another solid rocker to close and the remixes are decent.

Overall, this is a pretty solid studio album by Queen, and skyrocketed them back on top of the charts in the UK. Featuring a few hit singles, this marked Queen's use of synthesizers excessively. Although it does not stand up to their 70s albums, this will be a hit for any diehard Queen fan. Recommended.

It's tough to forecast which bands are built for the long run. The Eagles emerged as part of a genre (country rock) that proved to be a passing fancy. And with two talented frontmen sharing the spotlight, how could artistic differences be fended off for long? But, of course, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and the boys had a juggernaut on their hands, generating a dozen top 10 hits in their initial eight-year spurt. Selected Works: 1972-1999 gathers all the highlights from the group in all of its '70s and early '80s glory on three discs, dubbed "The Early Years," "The Ballads," and "The Fast Lane." The handsome box is fleshed out with a live disc from New Year's Eve 1999. With striking packaging, extensive liner notes, and a surplus of vintage photos, Selected Works is a suitable retrospective on a band that defined the California sound and took it easy, and, in the process, took it to the limit. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Great for those who don't have the original albums on CD.......2007-08-02

First off, I'm an Eagles fan, so that fact may or may not bias my opinion of this boxed set.

If you don't already have any Eagles albums on CD (or if you just have 1 or 2), this boxed set is the way to go. It has ALL of their 70s hits and a few not-so-well-known singles as well ("Try and Love Again" is fantastic). The 4th disc was recorded live on New Year's Eve in 1999 (therefore titled "The Millenium Concert") and is fairly decent, though I have heard better. The song selection for this disc is pretty weak. They play mostly "b-side" singles and a few of their minor hits as well as a couple of cover tunes.

I only had a few Eagles albums on cassette, so this boxed set was the way to go for me. There are some "outtake" tracks from studio sessions that shows a humorous side to the band which, I for one, found very funny and refreshing. Now we know why it costs millions of dollars to record an album!

There is a nice booklet in this set that tells the Eagles story and has some nice photographs (mostly black & white) of the band from then and now.

All in all, it's a good purchase, but again, if you already have the Eagles albums on CD, you might want to save your money.

1 out of 5 stars BIRD DROPPINGS.......2005-12-16

EAGLES-SELECTED WORKS 1972-1999: If ever a music act could be rightfully accused of "feathering their nest", it would have to be the Eagles. Never mind that they initiated the era of the overpriced concert ticket, charging a then unheard of $75 for their first reunion tour in the mid-90's. SELECTED WORKS 1972-1999 is a superflous box set that stretches the point by...oh, let's say twenty years (after their last studio LP, '79's THE LONG RUN, they've only managed to dole out five new songs, none memorable). Worse, if you already own the Eagles' half dozen albums, you also own everything here, save a lame live disc containing a pair of tracks from Don (You want your face ta freeze like that, dude?) Henley's solo flight, a Joe Walsh tune, a Tom Waits cover, and not one, but TWO Xmas cuts! So how many EAGLES concert classics IS that exactly? (Don't even bother doing the math-even THOSE are available elsewhere). Let's call this un-thology what it really is---THE GOOSE (or better, THE TURKEY) THAT LAID THE GOLDEN NEST EGG! Man, I sure hope Randy Meisner is at least gettin' his cut! RATING: ONE BAD YOLK

3 out of 5 stars A Good Concept Poorly Executed.......2005-11-02

They had the right idea. Giving each disc a theme ( "The Early Years", "The Ballads", "The Fast Lane")and selecting the songs appropriately almost works except for a couple of enormous missteps. First, each of these discs includes bits of studio jackassery that is neither particularly funny or even slightly enlightening. The space taken up by this nonsense would have been better used for missing selections, possibly a few from the band members' pre-Eagles days. Secondly, the fourth disc, titled "The Millenium Concert"is a disappointment. The song selection here is tepid at best, while Glenn Frey singing the lead on "Take It To The Limit" two or three octaves below the original Randy Meisner vocal borders on sacrilege. I held on to this package for over a year, and gladly traded it in for the Catalog Box Set. If that is more than you want to spend, get the two disc best of. It's cheaper than "Selected Works", and you won't have to listen to multimillionaire rock musicians cleverly calling each other "farthead" while goofing off in the studio.

4 out of 5 stars Good selection - mike p.......2005-09-14

As one could decipher from the title of this collection, "Selected Works" it does not contain the Eagles complete discography, however it does include almost every song an Eagles fan would like to hear. Released in November 2000, it is compiled from all the hits from 1972-1999. "Selected Works" is a 4-cd set, which includes cd's entitled: "The Ballads," "The Early Days," "The Fast Lane" and "The Millenium Concert." This seems to be enough to satisfy either a hardcore Eagles fan or just a casual fan. Each album in the collection looks as if it were had picked by the biggest of Eagles fan. "The Ballads" is a assemblage of their most popular slower tempo songs, including: "Desperado," "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Lyin' Eyes." "The Early Days," most obviously contains sogns from their earlier days as a band. This album contains such hits as "Witchy Woman" and "Take It Easy." The third cd, "The Fast Lane," is a collection of their more upbeat songs, such as, "Already Gone" and "Pretty Maids All in a Row." The fourth and final album in this anthology is "The Millenium Concert." This cd is compiled from the Eagles 1999 concert at The Staples Center in Los Angeles. This final cd includes some of their greatest hits, and some rarities, performed live. On one of the tracks, Don Henley says, "For the record we(Eagles) never broke up, we just took a 20 year vacation." This may ring true for many Eagles fans out there, who have remained Eagles fans throughout the many years with no new music.

4 out of 5 stars One Of Those Bands.......2005-04-07

I really am surprised about how many times older artists keep coming back into the mainstream and on the record store shelves, especially acts from the 70's. Yet, out of all of the group have still maintained that success, The Eagles have constantly been returning as reunions, and more importantly, the songs just keep getting better and better. While so much drama has fallen into the group after the status the group has earned into the 70's, and now, there just hasn't been all that way with a perfectional boxed set to reflect on their career. There was the recently issued box set that displays the highlights that have taken them to the limits.

Selected Works 1972-1999 is a detailed reflection of The Eagles career from the 70's and there recent revival in the 90's with the status of Hell Freezes Over. The collection includes so many great hits including well-receieved tracks like Hotel California, The Long run, Take It To The Limit, Desperado, and their more recent hits, Love Will Keep Us Alive and Get Over It. The songs on this collection have all been remastered very well, without any faults. However, so many of those may consider the more respected 2003 Very Best Of The Eagles collection instead of this because of the price, or the recently 2005 Eagles box set, which includes all of there albums restored graciously.

Yet, The Eagles Selected Works really is a very well detailed reflection, without any problems or faults that were overshadowed. I suggest this for anybody who wants a inexpensive reflection of this legendary band that hasn't lost the edge over all these years.

5 out of 5 stars My personal favorite JP compilation.......2007-07-15

If I was going to gripe about this song or that left off, I'd buy Metalogy. Since I own every Judas Priest album ever printed, that would be a waste of money. This compilation does give me an inexpensive way to carry my favorite Priest songs around without needing a suitcase. I can listen to a solid hour and a half (plus!) of Priest, and IMHO, it all rocks! Of course, I don't like EVERY JP song ever written (I just collect them), and I usually don't buy compilations of artists I like, due to the fact that there are usually songs on the comp's I dislike. I can genuinely say that I love every song on this collection, and when I feel the need to hear "Green Manalishi", or "Diamonds and Rust", I pop in "Unleashed in the East". Simple.
This 2 CD set stands out due to its affordability, coverage, and portability. Otherwise, why buy second sets of songs you already have? This one is worth it!

    5 out of 5 stars Don't own this but..........2007-07-01

I have a huge metal mix cd with some judas priest songs and I must say they were alot heavier and more bad a** than I thought. Like pain killers love their rich speed riffs and solos they sure can kick a** with songs like that I have alot more but I forgot the names they are also on this album too like breaking the law which is not my favorite but good. Judas priest rules and I give em a 5/5 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars A great Compilation.......2006-03-11

This is a very good and thought out album. It remains as one of my favorites. But obviously it might be a problem for people who can't afford it. But if you can you should think about it first. one time i listened to one song from a band and decided to get a "best of" collection. It cost me about 4 months worth of allowance. Turned out that the song i listened to was the only one i liked. I made a big mistake that day. So please, for your own good, do a little research and listen to music samples before you buy this great compilation

    4 out of 5 stars METAL GODS.......2005-12-10

THIS IS A VERY GOOD PLACE TO START IF YOUR JUST GETTING INTO JUDAS PRIEST.ALMOST ALL THE CLASSICS ARE HERE ALTHOUGH SOME OF THEIR EARLIER WORK IS NOT FULLY REPRESENTED.I COULD'VE DONE WITH THE STUDIO VERSION OF HEADING OUT TO THE HIGHWAY INSTEAD OF THE LIVE ONE BUT OVERALL THIS DISC IS PRETTY GOOD......

4 out of 5 stars Good compilation of essential metal band .......2005-10-08

Metal Works provides an interesting compilation of 2 decades of metal history. Judas Priest is one of the most important metal bands of all time, though they never were and never will be among my favourite bands. For every good song they wrote, they wrote at least one awful one. This also shows through on this compilation. Awesome cuts like Painkiller, Metal Gods, Breaking The Law, Eat Me Alive, Beyond The Realms Of Death, Sinner, Night Crawler and Victim Of Changes. And then truly hideous songs like Wild Nights Hot & Crazy Days, Heading Out To The Highway, Before The Dawn and Turbo Lover. And everything in between (You've Got Another Thing Comin', Living After Midnight, Desert Plains and so on). The band has always bounced back and forward between grim, sinister metal and commercial, poppy metal. Still, in their peak period (77-84) they laid the foundation of many things that were to come and they are an enormously influential band. The good thing about this compilation is that it allows you to skip all those inferior Judas Priest albums like Turbo, Ram It Down, Rocka Rolla and Point Of Entry because all their good songs are represented here. Buy this compilation, together with albums like Painkiller, Stained Class and Defenders Of The Faith, and you've a got a pretty good picture of what this band could do when they focussed their energy on the dark side.

A consistent highlight of rocker Lenny Kravitz's live show is the explosive drumming of the big-hair, sticks-flashing powerhouse Cindy Blackman. Despite her rock & roll prowess, she is first and foremost remarkable jazz drummer, and Works on Canvas shows why. A disciple of the late polyrhythmic drum genius Tony Williams, Blackman has moved beyond being a mere Williams mimic to using his approach as the core of her own evolving aesthetic. In this case, that evolution is more in service to her as bandleader and producer, exhibiting decidedly more substance than trap-drum flash. Her compact quartet of tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen, pianist-keyboardist Carlton Holmes, and bassist George Mitchell operates as a true ensemble unit, rather than as a soloist and backing band. Case in point is the subtle opener, the familiar "On Green Dolphin Street." The evergreen is given a fresh arrangement with a decidedly subtle feel. The trio of interludes, "The Three Van Goghs," neatly tie the program together. There's a well-calculated shrewdness in the way Blackman and company navigate this material, and the incendiary bandleader remains a force behind the drum kit. --Willard Jenkins

I am a drummer/vibist. As a drummer I have followed Ms Blackman's career for the past ten years. As a vibist I have had the opportunity to play with bassist George Mitchell, so I really looked forward to this cd.
My expectations were met. There is lovely playing and great interaction among the players. Many of the pieces are a bit moody and it is great to hear serious drums being played on slower tunes. Proof that there can be musical drumming in all contexts.
Blackman uses her cymbals beautifully to create colors under Allen's horns. Holmes provides some great solos and it is great to hear george in this context.
My only two complaints are too many of the pieces sound alike, and the bass could have been a bit more forward in the mix.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite drummer.......2003-02-22

Having seen Cindy Blackman play several times, most recently tonight at the famed Van Dyck club, all I can say is that she and her band are making some of the best music on the planet. She's not only a virtuoso but also a tremendous bandleader who has a real telepathy with her fellow musicians. This album grows with each listening, like the great ones always do.

Though Billy Strayhorn is best known as Duke Ellington's tireless collaborator, his contributions to the jazz cannon make him one of the most important composer/arrangers of the century--with or without the Duke. Take the A-Train, the song most associated with Ellington is, in fact, a Strayhorn composition. During his 28- year relationship with Ellington, Strayhorn wrote an average of one piece per week--an astounding output especially considering the painstaking detail and highly crafted nuance for which Strayhorn is known. On Portrait of a Silk Thread, the Dutch Jazz Orchestra led by Jerry Van Rooijen unearths pieces, which, unlike "Lush Life," or "Passion Flower," never made it into the Ellington band's songbook. While the treatment here is certainly reverent, it also underscores the highly stylized grace and almost withering beauty of these richly lyrical compositions. Strayhorn could compose with a masterful, sense of wonder and ornamentation. Just as importantly, he could make those gilded creations dance. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars This record is gigantic!.......1999-03-25

The compositions and arrangements on this amazing CD are beyond master-class. Strayhorn never runs out of colors or instruments. Each cut is like listening to a symphony orchestra--yet it is only a sixteen piece band. The Dutch Jazz Orchestra is superb in its execution. I keep trying to listen to other CDs in my car, but I keep coming back to Strayhorn. I have been listening to it for 8 months everyday, and I keep hearing new things each time I play it. I bought and gave away eight copies as Christmas presents to my band members,(I bought them at Tower for 16.99 apiece) and I just ordered 3 more here at Amazon for 12.99 apiece.) This album is a masterpiece, and the Music SWINGS! I hope they do another CD.

          Album Description

JAZZ MEMORIES takes a trip back to the Golden Age of jazz. Clifford Brown and Max Roach were wailing away over at Basin Street. Thelonious Monk was holding court at the Five Spot. Count Basie's mighty orchestra was raising the temperature to the boiling point up at Birdland. It was a miraculous time when everyone from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, to Swing Era sages like Roy Eldridge and Lester Young to bop innovators like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to second generation modernists like Miles Davis, Stan Getz and Clifford Brown were all alive and well and playing at their brilliant best.

A beautiful 72-page book offers unforgettable images of these jazz masters by the great photographer Herman Leonard, who was always there when the action was going down. Two CDs overflowing with extraordinary music, complement the sensitivity and artistry of these photographs, forming an audio-visual gallery of some of the finest, most soulful jazz ever recorded by over 30 of its greatest practitioners. Intimate session stories about each performance enrich the listener's experience by detailing exactly what went down in the studio while these recordings were taking place.

We are sure that all jazz fans will appreciate the extraordinary effort and love that have gone into the making of Jazz Memories.
