This is a beautiful CD - very clean and extremely well-produced. I was impressed the first time I heard it on loan from a friend and bought it immediately. Lots of dynamics, and a refined and powerful sound.

    If you're looking for a single CD that will introduce you to the treasure-house of Bartok's piano works, you can't do better than this. Szokolay brings each of the 55 short selections here to vivid life, from the simple and understated ones to the harmonically challenging, from the folk rhythms to the austere and meditative mini-masterpieces. The piano sound is just a little thick compared to the best piano recordings, but its very lack of sharpness helps to keep some of the more percussive pieces from sounding too brittle. I enjoy this more with every hearing. Hats off to Naxos for a great buy.

      Complete recordings of Mikrokosmos are relatively common these days, but aside from guiding students I wonder what purpose they serve. This is a series of piano study pieces starting at the most basic level, and the music with genuine listening interest really begins only with Book 3 (of 6). Similarly the duets are mostly teaching pieces, and though they make for good listening in small groups, the entire series becomes tiresome. Bartók wrote magnificent music, and the later books of Mikrokosmos are filled with superb little pieces. But though the performances in this set are all excellent, not much of the music is basic Bartók. --Leslie Gerber

            If Balkan folk music is your passion - you want to own this CD.
            The clarinet virtuoso improvisations are phenomenal - winding, twisting, turning, with unexpected curves - only a true master musician can create. While many can imitate but only *ONE* can create, Petko Radev is "the one"! "Clarinet afficianado alert", you will love this CD! The selection of folk tunes and dances on this CD are exceptional. I would say more but the titles are written in Bulgarian which I do not read or speak. Petko Radev had classical training in the clarinet and he returned to his roots, traditional music, after a successful career with in Milan at La Scala. Bulgarian music has neve been the same!!! The liner notes tell us Peto Dachev was the first to combine the Strandija and Thracian style of accordion playing - it has become the standard employed by most instrumentalists. I am less familiar with accordion styles but indeed this CD has music that is sensational, exciting, and very distinguished. Bulgarian music is original and highly stylistic. In the genre of "folk music", i.e "world music" it is easily recognized and has enormous audience appeal. This CD clearly demonstrates the reasons why. Listen, be amazed and buy it!             Petko Radev can be regarded as one of the formative voices of modern Bulgarian folk clarinet playing. He taught Ivo Papasov and was principal clarinet in the state symphony orchestra for many years,his playing style is therefore clean,precise and controlled. The arrangements are traditional and very well done. Overall the style is more like folk music than Stambolovo but some of the numbers are just as exciting, my favourite is the first tune in a driving 13/8.
