About the Artist
Anne Dodson has brought her own special blend of traditional, contemporary & original folk music to audiences throughout the U.S., Canada, Russia & Great Britain for the past 20 years. Accompanying herself on guitar & mountain dulcimer, singing a cappella & playing penny whistle, she creates an atmosphere of living room ease, whether she's playing for 4 or 4,000!
Originally from New Hampshire, Anne started playing music at an early age, along with her brother, David Dodson. After a few years "in retirement", she decided to make a career of music when she was in her 20's. For 5 years she worked with the highly acclaimed trio "County Down" & then moved on to the 5 member band, "Different Shoes". Presently the majority of her work is solo or with Matt Szostak. At festivals & for individuals or groups, Anne teaches workshops in guitar, mountain dulcimer & folk chorus, specializing in sessions in learning to sing harmony by ear. Anne also works with children of any age, in school & library workshops & residencies. (brochure available on request).
Anne has shared the stage with such notables as Gordon Bok (with whom she records & does concerts & workshops), Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton & she also has recorded & performs occasionally with Noel Paul Stookey.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

A Class of its Own.......2003-08-18
I have had the privilege of seeing Marilyn Taylor live, and the sound of her voice on recording is every bit as expressive and entrancing as her face and acting in person.
One senses that Taylor's voice effortlessly negotiates Frazelle's music, which has the quality of folk music set in a classical genre. Taylor instinctively adopts the vernacular and inflection of the characters and makes a (refreshing) departure from traditional lines. As she said about these songs, "My voice sat down in this music. It kicked its shoes off and felt cold bare earth and said, `This is home.'" Taylor indeed brings this "classical" music home to the listener.
Taylor further shows her gifts for stylistic flexibility and interpretive nuance as she brings to life Vardell's and Ward's more traditional music. One can almost see the far off look in her eyes as she whispers love's memories. The strength in her mid-range makes her all the more qualified to communicate such tender poetry. A listener is wrapped around her finger as she sings these stories.
A Splendid Recording.......2003-08-06
RETURN: ART SONGS FROM NORTH CAROLINA is a splendid recording representing works by three well-respected composers long associated with the state of North Carolina and its musical heritage. Soprano, Marilyn Taylor, brings forth a renewing and highly musical interpretation to each work. Accompanied by first-rate pianist, Robert Brewer, Taylor sings with conviction, warmth, and sensitivity, placing herself and her voice in character for the work she is performing. This recording would serve as an excellent addition to any personal collection or music library.

Warm and Melodious.......2001-02-07
Anne Dodson brings a wealth of life experience and a vital quality to the delivery of her material. Her infectious joy in singing and playing traditional/folk songs on the dulcimer, cello, guitar and pennywhistle shines through whether solo or as part of an ensemble. After many years of collaboration with her fellow Maine-based artists who accompany her on this (and previous albums), their smooth vocals flow out of your speakers. Sit back in your favorite chair, crack open your favorite beverage and let Anne soothe your stress-racked frame with her warm, inviting telling of historic myth and contemporary serendipity.

Album Description
The American art song found a champion in Mary Howe (1882-1964) whose songs, though often sung by colleagues during her lifetime, were rediscovered slowly after the emergence of the women's movement of the late 1970's. Diversity of style, language, subject, and level of difficulty gives Howe's songs great appeal to a wide range of listeners and performers and allows for the versatile programming contained on this disc.
Typical of Robert Ward's songs, his love of language is apparent in the evocative settings of St. Vincent Millay's sonnets. Voice and accompaniment are tightly linked, producing stirring dramatic effects. Romantic and colorful in nature, yet injected with expressive chromaticism characteristic of the twentieth century, the songs are a welcome addition to the American art song repertoire.
