About the Artist
Judith Dunlore was born and now resides in Southern California. She has sung classically in Opera and Chamber Music in the United States and Europe. She has been Music Director of several southern California churches, and has had a number of her own choral compositions published. Many holiday events have been entertained by the Lamplight Carolers, an organization that she founded and developed.
The hammered dulcimer is a relatavely new addition to Judith's musical repertoire. As a child she heard an old lady playing it for the tourists on the porch of a Ghost Town and held the delightful memory. Many years later, when she once again heard it being played at the Sawdust Festival, she took one home with her. It didn't take her long to be playing for others at parties and fairs.
"Afternoon Shade" is an effective combination of all Judith's musical skills.

New Age 1, Leprechauns 0........2005-02-03
This is the kind of recording that brings a certain amount of embarrassment with it. Not that there is anything wrong with liking the hammered dulcimer. It is a pleasing instrument, one that is capable of far more than most would expect. But when you mix it with synthesizers and throw in a large dollop of 'Celticism' you are in danger of crossing over into a romantic vision that frankly has nothing to do with either dulcimer or Celtic. A lot to do, however, with the performer's dream of what the world would sound like if leprechauns went into the new age electronic music business. And now here I am admitting that yes, I actually bought it.
So, to some degree, this is meditation music for pixies, or it would be if pixies meditated. For us humans it is slightly a saccharine melodic combination of acoustic and electronic sounds that really isn't unpleasing, but is difficult to come out and freely admit that you kind of like it. I think I'll to the line at confessing that I find it listenable, and a break from the not quite musical noise that appears at my ears when I turn on the car radio. But if you are hoping for an album of clean, honest dulcimering, you (and I) need to look elsewhere.
Judith Dunore's approach is to adopt snippets of genuine traditional music and then amplify the experience with a synthesizer or two. I like the intimacy of the recording, but I with this was a wee bit more representative of the real hammered dulcimer, which has a beauty all it's own. I would keep the close miking though. All to often dulcimer music is under produced out of an excessive desire to be genuine. I personally don't care what the audience hears, I like to feel I'm inside the instrument, and Dunlore has managed a bit of that. Just pray that there are no leprechauns listening.
Delightful, contemplative soul music........2000-09-26
Afternoon Shade is a wonderful CD for relaxation, meditation or just plain listening. Ms. Dunlore has taken familiar folk tunes and with her dulcimer and imagination has given them each a whimsical twist that grants them new life. Soothing but never boring. This CD has rapidly become one of my favorites.
