These three CDs document some of the greatest moments of culture shock in American music. Most of the bluesmen who first came to Newport had never played before audiences so attentive, large, or white. And those listening had never experienced anything like Skip James's blood-chilling whine, Reverend Gary Davis's furious testifying, or Mississippi John Hurt's twirling melodies. Most of the audience, in fact, assumed the bluesmen were dead. As a cinematic sweep of just what made those countercultural gatherings so exciting and diverse, this set is an unqualified success (though the rather arbitrary and ahistorical sequencing by blues subgenre is as puzzling as the omission of specific performance dates). While many tracks have long been available on other compilations, the unreleased cuts, 11 in all, are revelations, especially Muddy Waters and Otis Spann strutting through "Flood" and John Lee Hooker sinking into the scary groove of "Let's Make It." --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Great Selection of Blues Artists.......2006-11-04
I read about these concerts in an interview with Bonnie Raitt. I was really surprised with the sound quality on these CDs as well as the broad cross section of artists. I consider this an essential purchase for all blues afficionados as it contains performances by nearly all of the classic bluesmen
GREAT.......2006-05-19
Just got the CD....a great live recording of some of the foundations of blues...if you want to start collecting the blues, this is a great place to start. A great collection of performers recorded in a live situation. Son House, one of the originators of the delta blues is well represented. This album is grouped into three CDs' that are well stocked with some of the best there is !!! Get this CD....
A treasure trove.......2004-02-27
It's almost hard to believe that this CD exists. So many excellent performances by legendary bluesmen like Son House, John Lee Hooker, Skip James, Muddy Waters and a whole host of others, all recorded live at the legendary Newport Folk Festival. And the sound is amazing, crisp and clear.
Disc one opens with a six-song set by "Mississippi" John Hurt which includes "Candy Man" and "Stagolee", and also includes two spooky songs by an ailing but still-powerful Nehemiah "Skip" James, four songs by Son House, and songs by Bukka White and Fred McDowell, as well as two excellent acoustic solo performances by Muddy Waters. House's "Death Letter Blues" and "Empire State Express", Muddy Waters' "I Can't Be Satisfied", and Skip James' "Devil Got My Woman" are among the highlights, but there aren't really any "lowlights".
Disc two features a great little set by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, a wonderful rendition of Sleepy John Estes' "Clean Up At Home", three excellent songs by the underrated Robert Pete Williams, and several other fine performances, including Mance Lipscomb's version of Blind Willie Johnson's scary "God Moves On The Water", and Jesse Fuller's "San Francisco Bay Blues" (which you may have heard Eric Clapton cover on his "Unplugged" album).
On disc three, Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins plays an electric guitar (gasp!) on a great, swaggering "Baby Please Don't Go", and is backed by drummer Sam Lay on "Shake That Thing". John Lee Hooker lays down haunting versions of "Tupelo" and "The Great Fire Of Natchez", as well as a gritty "Boom Boom". Muddy Waters is accompanied by pianist Otis Spann on a great, swinging "Blow Wind Blow". And the 6'6" John L. "Memphis Slim" Chatman plays a version of "How Long" to rival that of Leroy Carr himself.
The vast majority of these performances are acoustic, and there is a lot of wonderful acoustic slide guitar here...Muddy Waters, Son House, Fred McDowell, Mance Lipscomb, and Bukka White all play ringing bottleneck phrases. Sonny Terry blows his customary harmonica, and Memphis Slim and Otis Spann both contribute some excellent piano playing. And while many of these songs have been available on various LP and CD releases before, "Best Of The Blues 1959-1968" includes almost a dozen previously unreleased recordings, of which Sonny Terry's & Brownie McGhee's "Drink Muddy Water", "How Long" by Memphis Slim, and John Lee Hooker's "Let's Make It", are among the greatest.
This collection is a must-have for anyone with an interest in the 60s blues revival, or just acoustic blues music in general, and you won't believe the fidelity. A wonderful two hours and fifty-three minutes of music.
A Stunning Collection Of Live Performances.......2002-03-13
If there is a better collection of live blues than this Newport 3 CD set, I haven't heard it. This stunning CD covers 10 years Newport performances during the height of the folk blues revival in the early 60's. Many of the artists were rediscovered by blues enthusiasts like John Fahey, Al "Blind Owl" Wilson and Sam Charters by canvassing remote areas of the south and locating the M.I.A.s of the 1920-30s "race" records. Some of these performers were presumed to be dead, and Newport was their first time in front of an audience in decades. There is not a single throw-away among 16 performers and the 51 (count 'em!)cuts here.
Vangaurd Records is to be commended for making the right artistic choices in thier production of this CD. Many of these performances had been floating around for years on other Newport collections. Producer Tom Vicker devoted an entire disc to each of these three categories: delta blues, country blues and urban blues. There is a sense of continuity on each disc without any jarring segues. Engineer Jeff Zaraya captures the warm analogic glory of the orginal performances and wisely chooses not to edit out foot stomping, hand clapping and crowd noises. Zaraya's mastering work captures the passion of the living blues and he avoids the mistake of reducing the performances to sterile museum piece curiosities.
The scope of performers is staggering. Son House, self proclaimed mentor of Robert Johnson, whose piercing slap-time steel guitar was the alter-ego to his gritty emotional baritone. Skip James, ghost of the delta, sings in his haunting falsetto with his mastery of complex right hand poly-rhythymic bassline fingerpicking. Jesse Fuller, San Francisco's one man band, plays his ramshackle ragtime blues. Mississppi John Hurt demonstrates his wry humor and his delicate five finger picking of his brillant orginal music. Polished performers like Muddy Waters and Brownie McGee know how to pace a show and work the crowd. Harlem's Rev. Gary Davis' does "old time religion" gospel shouting and precision ragtime picking. The suprise is an obscure ex-con, Robert Pete Williams with his eerie "stream of consciousness" lyrics and elliptical song structures. Robert Pete Williams, more than any of the performers, is connected to the roots of West African folk music. By my own count, John Lee Hooker was the last performer on these recordings to die(June 21, 2001). These astounding Newport performances are, at once, a historical document, a tribute to the diverse artistry of American blues, and some of the most passionate and riveting music I've ever heard. An essential for anyone collecting blues or roots music.
Great Set & Package.......2001-10-19
This is a nice cd set done by the folks at Vanguard records. They collected many of the cuts that have been previously released into one collection, with some tasty unreleased tracks.
Regarding the artists & their material.. well, you really can't go wrong with sets by Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy, Son House, John Lee Hooker, & etc. The artists on disc 1 alone is a "who is who" of the early blues that were only heard on scratchy vinyl before these organized festivals existed. Some might've considered them past their so called "prime", but their performances don't reflect upon it, as they take the listener & the white crowd on a trip down the Delta. Some of the performances on this package are unbelievable.
Might be me, but John Lee Hooker's set REALLY stands out. He sounds DANGEROUS, & his unreleased tracks alone make this package a well worth buy.
An interesting note, that in this mostly acoustic set is the inclusion of two Butterfield Blues band cuts. Having these cuts on different sources, it was great to hear them sonically remastered in all its glory.
Recommended, but more importantly, this is essential listening.

Much more than a nostalgia excursion, this CD stands as a critical document of late 20th century American culture. Don't expect a stodgy history lesson, however. The music from the 1963 festival is rousing and bell-clear. Jack Elliott gives a gutsy performance of "Diamond Joe" and Mississippi John Hurt's set is a triumph, especially the signature "Coffee Blues" and "See See Rider." The intimacy and excitement is palpable, even though much of the audience had never heard these songs, let alone seen this country-blues master. But it's the finale that's most remarkable, even if today it sounds surreal: Dylan and the folk elite--including Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul & Mary--singing "Blowin' in the Wind." An honestly moving moment, though not one that would last. --Roy Kasten

Although the college kids and liberal urbanites who flocked to the first Newport festivals may have romanticized bluegrass as traditional mountain music, at least they knew great pickers when they heard them. In the early '60s, most bluegrass artists were struggling to build a new audience in the wake of rock & roll and Nashville countrypolitan, and Newport gave them both a venue and a community. The Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Hylo Brown, and especially Bill Monroe responded with a palpable energy and joy. These three discs document some uniformly excellent performances, many never released before, and even those familiar with the Lilly Brothers or Jim & Jesse McReynolds will treasure these rare, live, and exhilarating moments from a pivotal period in American music. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Nice collection, but . .........2007-06-25
This is a really nice collection of great bluegrass, but what happened to the Doc Watson cuts that were on the 1963 Newport album? He was incredible even back then, and their exclusion here is noticeable.
Old Timey Music.......2002-08-27
I love this CD set. With this much music it's hard to get tired of anything. If I had a 3 CD changer Walkman I'd be listening non-stop. It makes me glad I have a job where I can sit and listen for a few hours at a time. I just wish I could keep my mandolin and guitar by my desk so I could play along. I find the quality of recording excellent and the quality of the musicianship is second to none. If you like Old Timey Music or Bluegrass, buy this CD set. I only gave it a 4 start rating because I'm stingy with 5s.
newportfolk VISITED59-66.......2002-04-17
For anyone who wished they had been there but never knew about it or was just to far away to go and LOVE good folk music/BLUES this is a good listen. It was well worth it for me. Thanks for the lost memories returned.
Very BEST of Bluegrass.......2001-07-25
This three CD box does represent the best by several of the founders of Bluegrass, including its amazing Father - Bill Monroe. The well known Mr. Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs and Jim and Jesse are here at their best. The suprise may be the band of the Lilly Brothers, Don Stover and Tex Logan. The music they play here further documents that their music was in a league with these other wonderful early bands. The music of the Lilly Brothers is a hidden gem - as was the music of Monroe and these other now prominent bluegrass bands for too long. Hylo Brown and Hazel and Alice give performances worthy of the title - Best of Bluegrass too. In fact, all the music in this set is truly beautiful!
Bluegrass Heads North.......2001-05-05
The Newport Folk Festivals were wonderfully eclectic in their definition of "folk', exposing music from the electric blues and folk-rock of Paul Butterfield and Bob Dylan to the high-lonesome acoustic sound of bluegrass, as documented on this first-rate collection. Newport, R.I. was not exactly home turf for bluegrass, but most of the all-time greats are here, performing at or near the peak of their powers, from Bill Monroe (long before the decline of his voice in later years), to the Stanley Brothers (not so long before Carter Stanley's alcohol-fuelled death), to Flatt and Scruggs (shortly before their artistic-philosophy-fuelled split-up: Earl wanted to plug in, Lester didn't). Come to think of it, this could be, serendiptitiously, the single best representation of the early giants of bluegrass. And Flatt and Scruggs even do their smash-hit, the "Beverly Hillbillies" T.V. theme song(!!) Very highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A fine collection of recordings.......2006-08-07
In short: I am on Amazon right now, shopping for this CD because my first one is worn out. Good stuff.
There are many fine recordings on this CD... I have listened to it over and over for the last 10 or so yrs. In addition I have found that people who don't usually listen to country blues seem to enjoy this collection. It has an airy and intimate recording quality.
Specifically: The whole 1st half of the CD is great... The John Hurt recordings are all charming & spirited ('Coffee Blues' is super), as are the Terry/McGhee tunes (check out 'Long Gone.'). Gary Davis' recording of 'Samson & Delilah' shows Mr. Davis at his showtime best. Skip James's 'Devil Got My Woman' and Robt. Wilkens 'Prodigal Son' are, in my opinion, the best versions extant of those performers' best compositions ... i.e. these are must-have recordings. The John Estes tune is a good example of his jugband trio with Yank Rachel and Hammy Nixon, and 'That'll Never Happen No More' by Dave Van Ronk is a clever reworking of the Blind Blake version.
A must-have for Stonesphiles..........2003-05-16
A very nice collection of songs from late 50's to early 60's at the NFF...most of these are on the 3-cd set that was recently released. However a handful are not on that set - including a powerful 9:30 rendition of Rev.Robert Wilkins classic Prodigal Son, which of course was covered by the Stones on Beggar's Banquet. Here you find the inspiration for the Stones version, which included only a handful of the many verses that Wilkins' had...also, you hear how Charlie and Keith appropriated the guitar and percussion (Wilkins' foot, here) parts for the Stones' version. A must-hear experience!
