About the Artist
Born in 1972, Amy Martin grew up in the small eastern Iowa town of Preston. She attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where she majored in philosophy and sang in the choir for four years. Her foreign travels have included significant stays in Ecuador and Peru, with visits to Bolivia, Chile, Mexico and Cuba. She currently lives in Missoula, Montana. To You is her first recording.
Product Description
In making To You, one of my top priorities was to create an album that moves, in several different senses. I wanted movement between the songs; a variety of moods, styles and ideas. I wanted the songs to get into the listener's body; to encourage physical movement. And I wanted to move the heart and mind; to inspire emotion and thought.
The foundation of this process is the song itself. In my songwriting, I attempt to utilize both of the tools of my medium - music and language - to mine a feeling, experience or idea. The songs on To You hopefully dig deep enough to strike central emotional veins, so they can ring true within the listener's own experience. I also tried to chose songs that are different from one another in terms of groove and subject matter. Adding bass, drums, cello, mandolin and electric guitar helped me bring out the unique feel of each song, and added fullness and drive.
The title of the album comes from a Walt Whitman poem by the same name. Words from that poem are used as lyrics for the album's title track. I feel honored to have also included the artwork of Missoula artist Stephanie J. Frostad on the CD cover. My intention is for the music, the Whitman poem and Stephanie's painting to relate to each other in an open-ended conversation, in which the listener/viewer is invited to become an active participant.

There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion.
Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley

I can only agree with others who like the style and sound of Josh Groban. I will certainly be looking to obtain more of his CD's.

Josh Groban and Charolette Church! Yum. This is a very good album and a must buy!
superb.......2007-07-05
What a voice, what an artist, what a man.
Underestimated in Europe. His concert on 21 May 2007 in Amsterdam was superb!
Oh my Gosh, Josh!.......2007-07-03
I love Josh Groban's music! It is romantic, mellow and beautiful :)
This CD has two songs on it that are very unusual. I believe both are from Cirque de Soleil, and draw you into the music--warning-- While driving, do not close your eyes!
a true star.......2007-06-24
First saw and heard Josh on the Tv and was blown away by his talent! it was about a year later that I found out who he was and bought the first album and can honestly say that I have never tired of his work. Every song is magical and he is truely wonderful. Have since purchased all his work and have also had the priviledge of seeing him live in concert in Glasgow/Scotland and was amazed. such a talented young man with a truely magical voice

There are thousands upon thousands of children's albums out there, but the one that quietly left its mark with more '70s children than perhaps any other album was this disc. Free to Be...You and Me was a pet project of proud feminist Marlo Thomas (a.k.a. "That Girl"), and it was born--according to the liner notes--by the desire to provide her niece with music "to celebrate who she was and who she could be." Harry Belafonte sings "Parents Are People," ex-football great Rosie Grier offers an incredible, touching melody titled "It's All Right to Cry," and Diana Ross waxes future-positive on "When We Grow Up." A great hour of brain food for young--and not-so-young--children. --Denise Sheppard

Okay but definately 70's sounding.......2007-07-10
I remembered this from childhood so I bought it. It's okay but you don't want to listen to it over & over, the songs and skits get irksome after the first run through. Not actually all songs, some short skits - a lot to do with gender equality wich is good but not alltogether entertaining... I prefer Billy Jonas - What Kind of Cat Are You!!!
Oldie but a Goodie.......2007-06-27
This title was great when my children were children; now they're adults with children of their own, and it's still great. We keep it in the player in the car for when the grandkids ride with us along with Peter, Paul and Mommy and Peter, Paul, and Mommy Too. The grandkids enjoy it just as much as our kids did.
I still remember all the words.......2007-05-24
Every time I hear these songs, it takes me back to my very first Fisher Price record player! I can still sing along with every song. My husband thinks the collection is a bit cheesey, and he is probably right. But that never stopped me from loving the best memories of my childhood. We are buying the collection for our children for sure!
Still fresh and new.......2007-05-12
Not literally fresh and new, perhaps, but thirty years ago when I was first listening to this on vinyl, I never would have imagined that the message would still be essential in the 21st century. I've been buying copies for the kids of all my friends and relatives, because I hope that the more people listen to this growing up, the more likely that eventually we'll live in a world where this CD isn't needed.
Still great after all these years! .......2007-03-14
An early birthday gift for my daughter (to be nine in April '07) - she can't get enough of this CD! After one listen, she was quoting bits and bites and getting up to hit "repeat" on the CD player. Cool.
My sister and I loved it as kids and though it's a teeny bit dated, the messages are sound, clear, and still 'work' today. The comedy is great for all ages(who can beat Mel Brooks and Alan Alda?)
So, my review says: get it! Listen ofen! And give it to someone you love!

Rod Stewart's mellowing years have neatly coincided with a commitment to smart ballad choices and a generally warmer musical persona. Rod the Mod liberated at last? Like many a pop singer, Stewart returns here to what's become generally known as the Great American Songbook, that evergreen body of mid-20th century songcraft that continues to inspire singers across oceans and generations. It's said that Stewart has been vocalizing many of these songs in private for years, and given the warm, human scale of most of the performances here, it's not hard to believe. Producer Phil Ramone's spare, unobtrusive arrangements inspire the singer to some of his most subtle and rewarding performances in years. Stewart's slightly weary vocal tack handsomely suggests the smoke, booze, and aching heart that lie at the best of these songs. Such back-to-the-future efforts can often sound like a last career gasp; here, they seem a refreshing breath of fresh air. --Jerry McCulley

Another Great CD.......2007-06-02
Once again, Rod Stewart "Great American Song Book" Series is great. We now have all of them and enjoy them all. He has always been a talent and these series of CD's are just as wonderful as all of Stewart's music. Highly recommend.
Save Your Money!.......2007-05-15
I already had his "As Time Goes By" album and listen to it constantly so I figured it would be a natural to buy this one. Couldn't wait for it to be delivered. Played it once and it was Awful all the way around. His voice, the accompanyment, the sound! It's sitting in front of me as I type this and I have no desire to ever play it again, that's how bad it is. On the other hand, his "As Time Goes By" disk is fabulous! But if I had bought "It Had to Be You" first it would have ended there. Unfortutely, I can't get my money back. Don't make the same mistake unless you adore this guy and will put up with anything he recorded no matter how bad it is.
a real disappointment.......2007-05-15
I bought this CD with great expectations, however after hearing it several times I have to say that Rod Stewart failed. His singing is unable to convey the soft swing mood which is fundamental to this beautiful songs. His voice sounds dull and does not transmit any emotion.I think Mr Stewart should return to what he really does masterfully,pop/rock
Rod Stewart, Crooner.......2007-05-07
Wonderful! If you ever danced to or just listened to these songs way back then, you will love the new Rod Stewart singing about romance.

Lesser bands might have been put off their stride by the death of their lead singer, but not AC/DC. No sooner had Bon Scott met his whiskey-sodden end in 1980 than AC/DC recruited a new singer, Brian Johnson--who sounded almost exactly like Scott--and released, in Back in Black, the biggest-selling album of their career. For Those About to Rock...We Salute You is a suitably triumphant follow-up. The cannon-punctuated title track--the most auspicious marriage of music and artillery since Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture"--still provides a spectacular finale to AC/DC concerts. For Those About to Rock also confirmed that Johnson's lyrical preoccupations were broadly congruent with those of his predecessor: "Let's Get It Up" and "Inject the Venom" are as subtle as their titles sound. This is a record Beavis and Butthead would describe as "cool"--and, as usual, they'd be right. --Andrew Mueller

Customer Reviews:
Best AC/DC album hands down.......2007-06-06
I've never claimed to be a big fan of AC/DC, and my best friend loathes them. However, I've been able to tolerate them and respect them from a musicians' point of view, and who could forget the classic tracks on the multiplatinum Back in Black LP. However Back in Black was still 80s heavy rock mainstream garbage to me in my mind. I couldn't get past the cliche lyrics of sex, wine, women, drugs, and the AC/DC cliches such as guns, fire, and hell.
Well, one night I was at a gig, with a band that I'm really great friends with. In between sets they threw on the track "For those about to Rock". I forgot how great that song was and I hadn't heard it in so long. I decided to pick the album up within the next few weeks and surprise, it dropped in price and it came with all of the original LP art.
However! There was a sticker on the front that said "remastered" and I was a bit skeptical. I mean, why fix something that isn't broken? Nonetheless I bought it and popped it in my car stereo. The explosive sound of this album just floored me. The masters sounded so good and the songwriting on this album is top notch.
I decided if any AC/DC album was worth picking up and mentioning to friends, FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK was the one to recommend. No euro-trash here. No cheesy 80s drivel here. FTATR is actually a very modern sounding record! Nothing wrong with classic albums, but this was a nice touch. Every song leaves with a hard hitting ending, and the next song punches you right in the face not a second later. The tracks glide into each other seamlessly and without flaw. I have no complaints here.
I lost Back in Black a long time ago and I haven't really missed it much. The same with The Razor's Edge. But if I lost this one I would probably pick it up the next day. Great songs, great sound, great price.
most creative chording and drumming the band ever did.......2007-04-26
I agree with almost all of the positive comments on this great album but wanted to add my own two cents worth.
As a guitarist and drummer myself I have to say that this is malcolm's best album by far as a guitarist/songwriter (even if the songwriting isn't as exciting as that of back in black), his chords are far more interesting than his typical work.
Angus too, his contributions to the songwriting are excellent throughout the album, and his lead playing is full of intense raging emotion in this album, if such a thing could ever be said of his playing.
the bass playing is typical ac/dc, great playing, great tone, really simple and dark, occasional cool bends and riffs, but sitting perfectly in the mix with rudd/s drumming and malcolm's excellent playing.
Also definitely worth noting is that compared to everything else I've ever heard by one of my favorite straight ahead classic rock drummers (talking about Phil Rudd of AC/DC), this album has by far the most amazing drum playing of any ac/dc album. Not something one generally thinks of with AC/DC, but Rudd is largely responsible for the tone, feel and memorable rhythm riffs. Throughout back in black and most of the band's career up to and including for those about to rock (after which he frustratingly left the band for many years causing AC/DC to lose a major character of their signature sound until his relatively recent return), Rudd has been vital to the success of AC/DC with his incredible feel, understanding of the songs, and great tone (this is a man who's always known how to tune his sonar drums perfectly, listen to their live stuff from the bon scott days, his drums still sounded incredible even with low budget unproduced small venue live recordings). Throughout for those about to rock Rudd is permitted to contribute more than his typical creativity into fills (or, as I understand it, just forced his musicianship onto the recordings against the will of the young brothers, which is part of why he eventually quit due to the young brothers not understanding how unique and important he was to the band's sound). Also the engineers and producer (Mutt lange) did a great job of bringing his sound to the front of the mix while still leaving plenty of room for everyone's sound to come through evenly. This is an album you can play air drums to with the best of keith moon's and john bonham's triumphs. Well done Phil Rudd! I take off my hat to you.
Also this is the last album where Brian's voice sounded brilliant. After this is really did start losing it's tone and becoming more of a noisy scream, albeit still the best noisy scream I've ever heard.
Compared to later flops like flick of the switch, fly on the wall, the terribly produced who made who soundtrack (talk about inconsistent engineering!), and even the best of their later work such as thunderstruck (by now on their third drummer I believe after rudd's departure, AC/DC still wondering why their feel just isn't as good after "for those about to rock" hahaha), I would put this album at the top of the heap, equal to back in black in many ways, slightly better in a couple of ways, and a little bit less great in a couple of other ways notably, songwriting isn't quite as amazing, but still really good).
This and back in black are the best two brian johnson led ac/dc albums period. After this things went down hill with occasional good songs but nothing outstanding and many filler songs in albums that were just not interesting to listen to at all. They've gotten it back together recently with Rudd and the original lineup and the sound is back, but sadly the young brother's just don't write like they used to, and johnson just doesn't have the tone any more, so a great rhythm section and great players just are getting a little too spent now to come up with the magic even if they now sound almost like they did in the highway to hell days (oddly, but that's what I think they sound like anyway now).
Another level.......2007-03-21
Brian Johnson helps take the band to another level after the mega successful Back in Black. Though not as much of a commercial hit as the former, this album showcases some extraordinary guitar work by Angus Young.
Play This On 10.......2007-01-25
Ac/Dc is amazing....they have been around since the 70s and have never changed their sound...they still do heavy blues tinged rock better then ANYONE in the business
this is the 2nd release with Brian Johnson fronting the band...to those that thought the unbeatable Back In Black was a fluke this is proof that Brian has what it takes...this CD is powerful! If you play it at a low volume it still sounds good but it loses over half of it's punch...the guitar tones really only come out when you crank it up to 10...which is how rock and roll is meant to be...the title cut 'for those about to rock' is rock and roll perfection...a call to all rockers to unite and sing loud and proud, complete with cannon sounds...very powerful...followed by 'put the finger on you' extremely catchy and melodic and full of power,'let's get it up' more sexual charged lyrics backed by very melodic rock fury...'inject the venom' more power...unfortunately the rest of the album doesn't quite keep up that pace...but come on,how can you follow up a start to finish perfect album like Back In Black with another album that is absolute perfection...they come close...snowballed,breaking the rules, night of the long knives and spellbound are not quite up to the beginning tracks but they still ROCK with power...and evil walks rocks hard and is right up there with the beginning of the album...and then there is c.o.d which in my opinion is ac/dc's most underrated song...it is awesome....this CD is a great example of what rock should be
upside - C.O.D..the title cut 'for those about to rock' let's get it up,put the finger on you, inject the venom and evil walks...great rock...great production...great solos and rhythms and Brian Johnson screams with the best of 'em
the downside - the second half has some songs that get a little slow and lose a little steam but it still rocks
the bottom line - a fantastic follow up to the unbeatable 'Back In Black'..if you are just starting out with Ac/Dc start with Back in Black and Highway to hell and then check out this one and Dirty Deeds...honestly,rock doesn't get much better then this...this is powerful and you should run out and buy it...donutman says so!!!
Review #100, Baby.......2007-01-10
I have now listened to all but a few of AC/DC's albums, and I would probably declare this one the second worst (with Highway to Hell being a painfully obvious last place). This was an absolutely horrible follow-up to the phenomenal "Back In Black"; it deserves every ounce of its low ratings and isn't the slightest bit underrated. I don't even know how this band ever got popular; their style is horribly repetitive and simple. If nothing else they were able to influence the future awesomeness of Jet and other such bands, but it's releases like this that make me wonder why the heck classic rock bands even have fans. I don't care for Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Rush, Styx, or other such bands. Oh, I also loathe The Who more so than any of those bands. People need to stop being so trendy and liking all the albums considered "classics" and find some more recent albums to consider classics since the 2000's are shaping out pretty good as rock music goes. As for this specific album, though, it has one good song; the title track. Bands use this technique often when they only have one good song on the album; they make it a hit. The rest of this album isn't as heavy as "Back In Black" and really it's boring enough to be classified a "snoozer". One star is what I'd give it; the AC/DC albums that you should buy are "High Voltage" and "Back In Black". Didn't like the rest.

Awesome Rock.......2007-07-13
I heard Rocco Deluca & the Burden for the first time at a John Mayer Performance at the Hollywood Bowl. I was in heaven. They have a great sound: classic rock and roll!
I bought the album and have not been disappointed!
Refreshingly original..........2007-06-26
I've been a Jude Cole fan for ages and have praccitally all his work in my admittedly oversized music collection...when I heard Jude had started his own label I was particularly interested in what kind of stuff we'd be seeing. Well, Lifehouse's stuff has had the Jude Cole treatment and I can't complain. That's why when I heard Rocco DeLuca was on Jude's label, I knew I had to check it out. This is some excellent stuff that needs your attention...very stripped down, very straight forward, very nicely done. I wish Jude would come out with another CD but to hear his touch on stuff like this is just as good. "Colorful"..."Bus Ride"...Mystified"...
all this stuff makes me want to hear more. I hope these guys are around for a LONG time to come. But don't take my word for it...go ahead and buy this one!
Much Ado About Very Little.......2007-06-25
Rocco Deluca combines the most memorable characteristics of three legendary talents:
George Michael's beard.
Fonzie's jacket.
Barney the dinosaur's lyric sheet.
This Is One Great CD - Do yourself a big favor and buy it now.......2007-06-03
Wow, this is ONE GREAT CD. Do yourself a big favor and BUY IT NOW. You can thank me later after you've played it 20-times in a row and are looking forward to the 21st. Original song writing, vocals, musicianship, production (cheers to Jude Cole), song arrangement and red hot single called Colorful (check out the video on VH1)!
All of the reviews I've seen try to compare this band it to other artists and bands. I remember when the Cars released their first CD and seeing a reviewer compare them to Lead Zeppelin and wondering what planet (other than earth) he was from. The same goes with this band. How about "this is a great band with an original sound"!
The flow of the CD makes you feel like you just sat through a concert. There are classic rockers like Colorful, How Fast, Gravity and Soul mixed with some beautiful acoustic numbers like Bus Ride and Mystified. The majority of the CD is rock. There are a couple of songs that have a blues feel like Swing Low.
Rocco Deluca's dad was a touring guitar player with some of the best blues artists in the business. Rocco followed in his footsteps backing up greats like Taj Mahal, John Mayall, John Lee Hooker and Johnny Cash. Needless to say he's been groomed his whole life to do this and it all comes together on this CD.
Complete from Start to Finish.......2007-05-10
Rarely is there an album I listen to in its entriety without skipping over lesser tracks. This slickly produced CD is an exception. Just about every track pops with an infectious energy that lifts your spirit. My faviorite tracks on the record are the first single "Colorful", "Swing Low", and "Soul". Believe the hype surrounding this band because they will eventually be huge.

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

"I know you can't resist, trying to re-open a sore...".......2007-05-08
Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!

Another great CD from Sarah McLachlan.......2007-02-20
I particularly enjoyed this CD - as inspired an endeavor as Mirrorball.
love it.......2007-02-15
I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.
Classic Sarah.......2007-02-06
I can listen to this CD over and over and still find it refreshing and beautiful. Sarah's songs are soothing to my soul.

All for You is a tribute to the Nat "King" Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummerless trio--here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. Their sense of intimate rapport is especially valuable on ballads such as "You Call It Madness" and "I'm Thru with Love," but also allows such uptempo tunes as "Hit That Jive Jack" to swing with surprising lightness. --Geoffrey Himes

A lady you can never get tired of hearing.......2007-07-04
Its so good to hear a musician who doesnt force the music but rather lets it flow, lets it just drift out from within. Beautiful, soft and mellow; this is definatly chill out music. Hard day at work, in need of something to take your mind off the rat race? Just slip this CD into the player and sit back and listen to a wonderful gifted jazz musician.
a pleasure to listen to.......2007-03-08
nice voice, nice music.
When it's good there is no need to go on and on with words.
great combination.......2007-02-19
The magic of Nat King Cole's music sung by the beautiful voice of Diana Krall, a great combination.
Another great album.......2007-01-22
Diana Krall's voice is like no one else's and I love listening to her. She's very talented in her piano playing, of course, but that voice of hers and the songs on her albums --- I've never been disappointed in any of her work.
Incredible singing instrument .......2007-01-01
Most of the songs here are unfamiliar to me. But in every track one hears the remarkable singing voice of Krall. She is one of those singers like Streisand who makes the voice a musical instrument. She moves us in so many subtle ways. And there is something about the quality of her voice, its fullness, its beautiful timbre. She seems also to have such control of what she is doing , and she is always making it interesting with new little riffs here and there. She is the best 'new singer' I have heard in years.
Just a remarkable singer who it is pleasure to hear.

Album Description
Depending on who's counting, there are anywhere from 100 to n-frigging-thousand subgenres of rock music a band can slide into for easy categorization. And depending on where you drop the laser on Fair to Midland's debut album, Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True, at least half of those subgenres are being reinvented at once. But to call this Dallas quintet merely eclectic is to sell them way short. No, Fair to Midland are masters of fusing those subgenres into something that's cohesive, intensely focused, and in a bold new category all its own.
Recorded with art-rock super-producer David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, Peter Gabriel), Fables From a Mayfly finds Fair to Midland stretching out even further into the aggression and atmospherics at their core while taking their inherent gift for melody to new levels. Tracks such as "Kyla Cries Cologne," "April Fools and Eggmen," and the gripping first single, "Dance of the Manatee", showcase Fair to Midland's flair for combining progged-out virtuosity with lead-heavy riffs, dynamic tidal waves, and frontman Darroh Sudderth's operatic vocals. Even when the volume lets up--as in the softer, spacier folds of "The Wife, The Kids, and the White Picket Fence" and "Say When"--Fair to Midland create sonic tidal waves big enough to level arenas.
With Fables From a Mayfly, Fair to Midland have truly delivered, capturing the kinetic energy of their live show while harnessing the array of influences that make them impossible to pigeonhole. "For the most part, our musical tastes are completely different," says Sudderth, who rounds out the band with guitarist Cliff Campbell, drummer Brett Stowers, bassist Jon Dicken, and keyboardist/electronics manipulator Matt Langley. "We've just gotten better at listening to each other over the years. All of our songs are just us trying to find a happy medium between what everyone in the band listens to--and I think that actually being able to do that is what makes us so different from a lot of other `rock' bands today."
Customer Reviews:
One of the best albums this year.......2007-07-31
Fables From a Mayfly is definitely one of the best albums I've heard all year. Its heavy, yet melodic tracks can keep anyone hooked on this Texas band. Their sound is impossible to label, and anyone will love this band. One of my personal favorite tracks on this album is "Walls of Jericho", which, along with the rest of the album, is simply amazing. This album is definitely worth the price (it's worth more actually, so this is a great deal), and would appeal to people of all ages and musical tastes.
What's holding them back?.......2007-07-27
I stumbled unto Fair to Midland's Fables from a Mayfly, and I have to say that I was really stunned when I engaged in my first listen. Sonically tight, and with an amazing vocalist, FTM proves to be a standout band among the hoards of bands that emerge almost daily. IN a strange twist of contradiction though, their music doesn't really do ANYTHING different than any other band out at the moment, or those that came out last year or the year before that.
Signed to Serjical Strike (Serj from System of a Down's record label), FTM show the world, through Fables from a Mayfly, that they can stand their ground and produce some musically tight material the soars with an epic feel.
However, throughout the whole album, I got the feeling that the band is holding back. Sure, each song is wonderfully crafted both sonically and musically. But it seems as if the band could do....better. None of the 12 tracks stray from the usual and predicatble cookie cutter rock structure. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it left me wondering what they could REALLY do if they were not confined by the lines and managed to color far outside the pre-designed picture.
It seems as if they created each song to cater to a radio-friendly audience. That reeks of a band that desires to be in the lime light a la'MTV.
Though make no mistake, each song is amazing and well done.
There are crunching, head nodding riffs, wonderful clean strummed passages, beautiful piano parts and some of the best singing of 2007. Seriously, the vocalist has PIPES! He can hit high notes like they were nothing. His lyrics are not too shabby either - posed a seemingly metaphorical and meant to convey a message.
But, Fables from a Mayfly sounds suspiciously like the years of released music that preceeded it. If that doesn't bother you, then you are in for a wonderful, soaring treat.
One thing that bothered me,the drumming left much to be desired, as it never really strays from the path - which can be good, and bad.
Overall, the music seems to be caught between the whole Modern Rock world and the Alternative Rock world, blending these styles together to form a well created album. A lot of people are stating that FTM has a Prog-Rock sound incorporated in their music, but I have yet to hear this. If you know true Prog-Rock (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson, Dream Theatre) then you would know as soon as you heard FTM that they sound NOTHING like Prog-Rock.
FTM do bear a vague resemblance to Dredg's El Cielo days, which is a very good thing, as El Cielo is a very exceptional album (which I happened to stumble upon in a small record store one day)
While its nothing you haven't really heard before, Fables From a Mayfly is an album worthy of your time and energy and will certainlyuplift your spirit with its soaring vocal harmonies and well put-together rock.
Another Tomorrow Fills Up My Front Window.......2007-07-21
Every so often a band comes along that just completely blows your mind. Fair to Midland is one of those bands. Every song on Fables From a Mayfly is simply amazing. The lyrics are no less than pure poetry. The combination of lead vocalist Darroh Sudderth's throaty growling and amazing singing, along with the talents of each of the other band members (Cliff, John, Matt, and Brett) form what I can only describe as a work of art. The band revisit some of the songs from they're second album, inter.funda.stifle, and while they are the same, they are also different. Each of them sounds more refined and filled-out. "Dance of the Manatee," which is probably they're most well-known track, has been transformed into a pulverizing, yet strangely brilliant tune. The biggest surprise (and my favorite track) comes from the bands first album, The Carbon Copy Silver Lining. "A Wolf Descends Upon the Spanish Sahara" is fan-freakin-tastic. Every time I hear this song it sends chills up my spine. My recommendation: BUY THIS ALBUM. You won't regret it.
Fair to Midland's Dance of the Manatee ...........2007-07-19
Fair to Midland - Dance of the Manatee is a excellently crafted song. Singer Darroh Sudderth's voice is very powerful through out the song. His singing style is very unique and very catchy to anyones ear.
The whole album proves to be a wonderious treat to try. The lyrics and the music provides endless minutes of listening pleasure and the artwork on the album is strangly beautiful and reminds me of old circus style drawings and pictures.
Awesome Beakout.......2007-07-15
I heard these guys on the radio not long before the album came out and I immediately loved it. I listen to a variety of rock, classic rock, metal, prog etc. and found it to be refreshing. It's one of those cds where you can listen to it all the whole way through. I highly recommend it.

Album Description
Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.
Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.
"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."
Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."
With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08
This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.
Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08
Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!
Very soothing.......2007-05-14
Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.
very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13
the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.
Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20
Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.
