Album Description

Before the sudden passing of the great Gerald Levert, he teamed up with his father Eddie Levert Sr. one more time to record this smash album. The last time the two worked together they released a great collection of music with the album Father and Son.

5 out of 5 stars Do they give us something to talk about?.......2007-07-29

For the true Eddie and Gerald Levert fans, this is a culmination of the best work of two of the world's "soul singers." I was skeptical that they would be able to do justice to Something to Talk About, as I'm a big Bonnie Rait fan, but she would be proud of their cover. My personal favorite on this disc is the cover of Bread's "Make It With You." I realize how much I am going to miss Gerald's voice.

If you are a fan, this is one you definitely must add to your collection.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointed.......2007-07-17

I was sadly disappointed with this CD. Unfortunately, it sounded like it was not completed prior to Gerald's untimely passing and Eddie's voice was digitally added to the tracks.

5 out of 5 stars My love is gone but not forgotten.......2007-07-03

I have listen and cried just to hear the strong and handsome voice of a man I LOVE so Dear. Gerald's music is a blessing to me, I Thank God he allowed Gerald to pass this way! The CD is an AWSOME piece of work, if you do not have this project in your collection. I urge you to get it, you will be blessed.

4 out of 5 stars What a PHENOMENAL duo father & son made!.......2007-07-02

Eddie Levert Sr. & Gerald Levert were perhaps one of the most soulful, powerful duos to ever live in my opinion. What may be most perplexing about the second collaboration between father and son, SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT, the follow-up to the exceptional FATHER & SON, is the pair sound even closer vocally than they did on FATHER & SON. Indeed, history may have never seen two voices who complemented each other any better than Eddie Levert, Sr. and his greatly missed son, the late (hard to say that), great Gerald Levert. While FATHER & SON will always be the definitive duet set between the two, SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT is a brilliant effort, finished just prior to Levert's sudden death in November 2006. There is no "Wind Beneath My Wings" or anything that is as soulful as the brilliant, better-than-original remake of the O'Jay's "You've Got Your Hooks In Me", but soul, sweat, and vocal perfection ooze throughout SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. I have to say, Gerald would be so proud, and I know Eddie is definitely proud of this fine addition to the Levert catalogue. If only Gerald were still here...

The album starts with the rousing "S.O.S.", where any Levert fan instantly recognizes the power and soul of the Leverts. The production is contemporary enough not to sound dated, but soulful enough to recall the power and vigor of 1970s soul. "I Like It" doesn't downgrade or sacrifice any quality, keeping both the new and old alive via soulful production. Once again, the melding of two voices with only small variants makes for another hit. One of my personal favorites follows via the Grammy worthy "Close & Personal" in which both Leverts bear their souls and achieve such a raw grit within their voices. The production lies somewhere between R. Kelly's "steppin' music" and vintage 70s & 80s sou. Equally good is the follow-up track, "That's What I Do", where the Levert men slow the tempo down and sing a beautiful ode to women - one of the most tear-wrenching duets of the album, where Levert tells the woman she should be "given carte blanch". The refrain is certainly the most catchy and most beautiful of the entire album, making you wish that the 4:08 track lasted for days. While not necessarily as good as "Close & Personal" or "That's What I Do", the great "Bad Habit" provides the fifth consistent track of SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. The refrain is absolutely marvelous in which the duo sings: "I can't let you go, baby you've become my bad habit..." I have to say the Levert men NEVER miss a step nor a beat.

"Slip Away" features production reminiscent of the sensual R&B sound of the 1980s and once again the Levert's provide for another top-rate number. The remake of "Something To Talk About" doesn't rival "Wind Beneath My Wings" for the best cover track, but it is a very worthy remake with very smooth background vocals that absolutely make the track. Honestly, the Leverts are very good at covers, moreso than a number of other artists. "Make It With You" isn't bad either while "Tapped" is another personal favorite of mine in which any doubt of datedness with the group is erased with its playful production job. "A Situation" isn't the best track on the album, but it is definitely solid and above par. "Get To Know Me", the penultimate track is very welcome here while
"The Simple Life" proves to be phenomenal ending to an overall exceptional final album by the duo that should've lasted forever.

Overall, there isn't a misstep on SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT. It is well produced and I think it is another exceptional addition to the R&B market in 2007, which I think has been very strong this year in particular. Gerald Levert, you will never be forgotten. Your music and musical contributions are timeless; death can't make us forget you. 4 stars.

This double record from 1972 remains the definitive collection of Rundgren's long career. With Rundren acting as a one-man-band for three-quarters of the session, it was also his bid for a Ph.D. from the college of musical knowledge. He deserved the degree for simply writing the lead-off track, "I Saw the Light," a melodic pop-rock gem that remains Rundgren's greatest hit. Rundgren excels at Beatles-esque pop-rock ("Couldn't I Just Tell You," "Wolfman Jack") and Philadelphia-styled soul ballads ("It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," "Hello, It's Me"). He also sticks his toe into heavy metal ("Black Maria"), jazz-rock fusion ("Breathless"), and cerebral pop ("The Night the Carousel Burnt Down"). Like most double albums, there's fat on the play-list, but the best of Something/Anything gave credence to Rundgren's boast of being a wizard and a true star. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars What's more to say? TR is a GENIUS........2007-07-22

I've been a Todd fan for....37 years now and though I've been away from his light for a few years, I am in the process of re-discovering his music. ALL HIS MUSIC MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD! We can debate pros and cons of this and that, but the simple fact remains that EVERYTHING he puts out is "city in my head" preciously supurb. You can pick any cd...go ahead...pick something/anything...and you'll see what I mean. A lot of what he does in the solo masterpieces he does all by himself...vocals, instruments, production, treatments. And Utopia is so very, very excellent. What more to say?

5 out of 5 stars something/anything What a talent!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-08

I recently bought a Bonnie Tyler CD(super hits) because I loved a couple of her songs(Bright eyes,I'm holding out for a heroe)which by the way is terrific.Every song was great but I loved her duet with Todd Rundgren. I searched the internet for Todd Rundgren and fell in love with him. He is probably the most talented man in the music business. He does it all. I am buying everything he has ever done. The man is amazing.!!!! I went to the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida recently and I can understand why they have a wall dedicated to him. My dream would be to meet him to tell him how wonderful he is. DEBBIE

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-08-06

An amazing double album by , at the time, a very young Todd. An interesting variety of songs. Todd can rock, he can croon, he can play bubble gum, he can jam, he can harmonize, he's got soul. "Hello it me" was a fav when I was young and it is still way up there today.

It so wrong that this ultra talented musician, song writer, performer, producer, and chance taker is not in the rock and roll hall of fame.

5 out of 5 stars excellent double album.......2006-05-23

todd rundgren really proves to be great in many different areas on this double album. he dabbles in a bunch of musical styles, writes some great songs with great melodies, produces everything, he's a one man band, he's a band leader, he's a one man carole king album, he gets heavy, and does some pretty weird experiments. one man... doing all of that! wow! listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THAT TODD.......2006-03-23

Todd Rundgren is definitely one of the best songwriter's ever. Pop, rock, jazz...the man can write anything. This double album is awesome and one of his best. Besides the obvious hits, Wolfman Jack is rockin' as is Black Maria. I recommend it.

Nikka Costa's fiercely bootylicious first single, "Like a Feather"--that song with the thick, clapped 16th notes--has already garnered the 28-year-old singer one hell of a buzz, and for the most part, she's got the goods to back it up. Already a platinum-selling artist in Europe and South America, the Tokyo-born, L.A.-bred singer's stateside debut bulges with ambition. It's a mixed bag of musical tricks that's equal parts '70s-style funk, hazy Led Zeppelin-inspired psychedelia, and angst-ridden alternachick yowling, with healthy dollops of soul, hip-hop, and thrash thrown in for good measure. Produced by Costa, Australian rocker Justin Stanley (who's also the singer's husband), and high-profile New York City DJ Mark Ronson, the album works best when it piles on the noise--like on the standout "Tug of War," which features the unmistakable rim-shot work of Roots drummer ?uestlove. On that track, a flurry of scratched samples, layers of soundboard-smeared noise, and a few luscious string sweeps break into gospel-choir harmonies that swirl gorgeously beneath Costa's reedy mezzo-soprano wails. It's a shame that she can't match this intensity on sparser down-tempo ballads like "Nothing" and "Just Because," where she sounds like Fiona Apple's slightly less annoying older sis. As the album's title says, everybody got their something, and Costa sounds best when she sticks to hers. --Sylvia W. Chan

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Costa Has Got That Something.......2007-02-10

With a guitar riff that traces straight back to Heartbreaker by the Rolling Stones, Nikka Costa gets out to a fast start on the first track, Like A Feather, and then shows her range as a songwriter/vocalist throughout this excellent CD.

She reaches deep into her soul for real interpretations of R&B, blues and gospel, with a variety of mixes in the production. Though I am not a fan of layered vocals, Costa is able to do an admirable job because of her range of expressions in delivering the parts.

She sings it like she's lived it in Push & Pull and Corners Of My Mind, with Tug Of War and the title track compelling enough to make you stop what you're doing and listen intently.

A dynamite CD likes this one means that the artist has refined the material over a period of years and may struggle to reach the same peak or is starting one of those magical runs of quality releases. Costa has set a solid foundation and Everybody Got Their Something will stand on its own no matter what the future brings.

5 out of 5 stars A unique favorite.......2007-02-03

I've had this CD for awhile and it remains one of my absolute favorites. So it hasn't been played on the radio? I love finding a musical gem that others haven't heard, though why Nikka Costa remains obscure to radio stations is beyond my guess. This is one funky and unique collection of songs that sound like no other.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sound!.......2007-01-17

This album has all the variety that showcases Costa. Motown, soulful, pop, rock, riot grrl. Not a boring cd. However, with that said. You do get the feeling that you heard the song before. But, great execution.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Infectious.......2006-11-26

I had been hearing that song "Everbody Got Their Something" on the Desperate Housewives for the last year. Then I heard it again on an episode of Nip Tuck. I investigated..and I found a gem. This CD is TRULY infectious. Her voice, the lyrics, the music is all so beautifully put together. I can't believe a TRUE artist like Ms. Costa hasn't been recognized with mainstreem attention. I love this CD and i've only owned it for two hours now. The song "So Have i for You" gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it. Unbelievable!

5 out of 5 stars Funk and Soul are alive and well............2006-01-31

I saw Nikka Costa perform "Like a Bird", live not lip-synched, on the "Arsenio Hall Show"(of all places). I could not believe the voice coming out of this, well, little woman. Didn't hurt that her band was just Kickin'! But she was just incredible. I finally got around to buying this CD and let me tell you, she is much, much more than just that "one-hit wonder" song (God I hate VH-1). This is one of those CDs that, if you're into the style of music, that you absolutely have to listen to from start to finish (after you get over the "What was THAT?" songs that you have to play 20 times in a row). Nikka Costa proudly continues the traditions of Janis Joplin, Sass Jordan, and other female singers who do what they want, when they want, and it kicks-your-ass every time. Make sure you pull the curtains and lock your door so you don't get caught "bad dancing and air-guitar playing". ;)

4 out of 5 stars Tell Van the (old) Man Something - stop singing!!!!.......2004-06-17

In a perfect world, this would be a great mini CD and a masterly tribute to Mose Allison. Georgie Fame and Ben Sidran excel both as singers and keyboard players - excellent phrasing and keyboard technique - who do full justice to Mose Allison's wonderful songs. Fame I am familiar with, but Sidran is new to me. His playing on this album is what the jazz piano should be, dazzling but un-fussy. Fame and Sidran complement each other perfectly. It would be interesting to see them do more albums together. Mose Allison must have been tickled pink at this paring.

Sadly, this is not a perfect world and this is not a mini CD. Van Morrison sings on half the songs and he is uniformly dreadful. He sounds like he is singing through a mouthful of mushy peas. The gentle humour and subtle craft of Allison's song writing is butchered by his self-important, pompous and soulless delivery. It is sad to think that in the 60s and 70s, he was one of rock music's best singers. Recordings such as Listen to the Lion or Madame George or his haunting version of Richard Cory are a testimony to this. These days are long gone. He has let himself go physically and artistically and he should call it a day and retire. Listening to him is now an annoying embarrassment.

Don't let Morrison put you off buying this recording. You can set your CD player to skip the Morrison tracks and just listen to Georgie Fame and Ben Sidran who are worth the price of this CD alone. It might also be an idea to type Ben Sidran's name into the Amazon Quicksearch and find out what else he has done.

5 out of 5 stars DISCOVERING !.......2003-01-15

I usually bought everything by Van Morrison, so I did with this one. And what a great surprise !!! I discovered one of the best composers of the 20th Century !
I had the chance to talk with Mr Allison last November in the Jazz Showcase in Chicago and I told him I knew him by chance, because this album. He replies: "Yeah! I know ... this is a good album!". I asked him to play Benediction (one of my big temptations here!) but he told me he didn't have anybody to sing the harmonics ...
So, I stayed for the second set, we were just 12 of us, and he was performing songs from this album and he was looking at me. What else can I say ... ? A great pleasure and a luxury.
I got a picture by him with his signature, and believe me, the bass player told me he never does that, but that night in Chicago ... I touched the moon !
Try to get some by himself, like Allison in Wonderland, or the two discs he recorded in London last year.

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2001-09-14

When I first played this it struck me how much Van Morrison sounded like Robert Johnson. Unbeliveablly great record. Get and you'll hear some great music.

5 out of 5 stars I'd give six stars if I could........2000-02-18

This album finally arrived today after my long and eager wait. I think I've played it at least six times already! "Songs of Mose Allison" oozes charm and it will put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. I have been a fan of Van Morrison's music for some time and now thanks to him I've realized the amazing talent of Mose's songwriting. Who knows, maybe some day soon my collection of Mose Allison's albums might rival my collection of Van's...

5 out of 5 stars What a Find!.......1999-11-06

Great cd, shows the tremendous versatillity of Mose, and Van Morrison. Great songs, if you like this c.d., you obviosly have great taste and would love Van Morrison w/ John Lee Hooker as well as pure Mose.

5 out of 5 stars U.N.V. had something goin' on back in '93.......2005-04-07

U.N.V.(Urban Nubian Voices) came onto the scene in early 1993 with their debut album "Something's Goin' On". This CD has a mix of new jack r&b sounds and smooth slow jams. The group hailed from Detroit, MI and only released one album after this which was the self titled "Urban Nubian Voices". The best track on here is the heavy hitter self-titled "Something's Goin' On" which is in my top 5 of slow jams all-time. The group really put a great sound into this song with a great keyboard sound as well. U.N.V. had the sound of gospel group but at time they did not get marketed very well as their second album, their voices could have made them a mainstay in the industry but the music scene was in a transition from the popular new jack swing to the g-funk era at that time. Also some other standout songs are "2 B or Not 2 B", "Straight From The Heart", & "UNV Thang". Overall a very solid debut. The reason I give this CD 5 stars is because "Something's Goin' On" would get 5 stars by itself. Pick this cd if you love great old school like me.

If you only preview the song, and don't buy the album you'll be satisfied. It's that good. If you only buy the single you'll be satisfied =).

i think unv did some wonderful tunes on this cd, though there are some hip-hop tracks but they are not so bad as to keep me away from listening to it. i really love the group, especially when i listen to "when will i know;close tonight;hold on;no one compares to you and my favoured "something's goin' on". i don't regret buying this cd, it is "rythm & blues"

5 out of 5 stars Snow as a pop rock princess.......2001-11-02

This album seemed so long coming that I had begun to wonder if I had heard the last of Phoebe Snow. Since Snow is eclectic to say the least one never quite knows what to expect, but she is certainly right at home here. Pop is what its all about - latherings of catchy melodies and exuberant and slick playing and production from Ricky Fataar and others. Snow's vocal control is a always exemplary and she makes it all seem so easy - today's pop princesses could do worse than to take some lessons out of this classy demonstration of power pop Think Bonnie Raitt's Nick of Time and you'll be in the right territory but like Raitt, Snow's voice is very much her own and comparisons are odious.

5 out of 5 stars Her comback survival!.......2000-08-17

Phoebe sang alot of comercials and deep jazz cuts like Thankful And Thoughtful in the 80's. She had a AC hit with Dave Mason titled Dreams I Dream. By the end of the 80's she had suffered a heart attack, hence the song Cardiac Arrest, and comeback to the pop/folk scene with this CD. It's a combination of her traditional thoughtful folk writing like the title track to the the spirited single If I Can Just Get Through The Night. She even went as far as recording an updated version of the Emotions disc classic, Best Of My Love, very effectively! Also listen to Mr.Wondering, We May Never Feel This Way Again and the jazzy Soothin'.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASS ACT ALL THE WAY! ! !.......2000-06-04

Phoebe Snow means Talented and gifted. What a truely amazing woman, I wish I had half her talent, Id be rich and famous, but alas I can only dream!

Phoebe has a unique voice that is easily distinctive from the rest, the music is not harsh, allowing her voice to drift over you in all its lyrical beauty is wonderfully satisfying.

I love this album, I have three copies of it in case I lose one, I love it that much, to me she is on par with Stevie Wonder which is high praise indeed, since I love him absolutely! I wish she would recieve more recognition as she is an incredible artist, a singer songwriter a brilliant guitarist and pianist she is so obscenely talented it makes you ill! I am inadequately glad that she exsists, this world would be all the poorer without her. So she is yet another who I HIGHLY RECOMMEND, get a copy enjoy and be pleasantly blown away!

Doin' Something, Soulive's Blue Note debut and second album overall, sees the organ-based groove-jazz trio creatively stretching beyond their heralded debut, Turn It Out. Where that session was a lean, live cooker that cemented the trio's appeal to the acid-jazz and jam-band crowd, Doin' Something reaps the rewards of time spent in the studio--there are overdubs and, more importantly, an ambitious, varied overall vision. Rather than just rattling off a dozen jams based on a single line, the tunes here are actual songs with memorable melodies that draw upon hip-hop, soul, funk, and pop to go along with the rump-shaking jazz grooves. Furthering the funk foundation, the trio--guitarist Eric Krasno and brothers Neal and Alan Evans on organ and drums, respectively, also brought in James Brown-veteran trombonist Fred Wesley to lead a four-piece brass section (and contribute horn arrangements) on a few tracks. This is the sound of a hot young band putting its best foot forward, and the great thing is, you won't be able to keep your foot from bouncing along. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars The Blue Note Debut, Soulive!!!.......2005-06-22

This is a great follow up to Soulive's first album. Now they're signed to probaly the greatest record company in the country; Blue Note, which also hosts Medeski Martin Wood, Terence Blanchard, Joe Lavano, Charlie Hunter, Cassandra Wilson, and many more.

I am a huge fan of organ trios. Sometimes I wish they just recorded with the three of them, but the horns do sound nice. This is tight grooves. Soulive are the kings of modern soul funk jazz.

Soulive hasn't released a studio album in a while. And it's really bugging me. I want to hear how these guys are progressing. With their last studio release, Next, Soulive proved to have some soul left in them, but we haven't gotten anything in a while.

I happened to catch a Soulive preformance on BET jazz the other night, and these guys were smoking. Smoking soul, Soulive knows how to bring down the house.

I think one of the reasons Soulive is so successful is that they appeal to everyone. They have the style, the looks, that appeal to the younger generation, yet they can still get down and groove and play some real jazz.

I think we're only in the early stages of Soulive, but my guess is that they grow into a very decent band. They are one of my favorites, and probaly will be for years to come.

In the mean time, keep listening to this funky album! It's got some killer grooves that can put you right in the mood. Soulive, the great soul jazz ensemble!

4 out of 5 stars fresh sound.......2004-04-02

Great sound a -little smooth at times though. This is a great trio of young players but the guitarist's "hep-jazz-cat" look is pretty funny.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Soul-Funk-Jazz.......2002-10-15

Before I delve into my review, I must say that this will be rather biased, as I know the drummer somewhat well and have other connections to the band (namely, their manager, jeff Krasno, Eric's brother). But I digress. This was my first Soulive album I bought, after seeing them 3 times live. I wasn't sure if I'd like the studio efforts for I know that they work extremely well live. However, after the first listen though, I was hooked. Yes, it doesn't have that same raw energy that they posess live or on Turn It Out; yes the sonic qualities and mastering of the recording may not be top top notch; but it just gives it its own flavor, which I think should therefore be viewed in a slightly different light from how you'd view them live to truly appreciate the efforts on here, which are plentiful. Onto the music.
The album opens with one of their better known tunes, Hurry Up...And Wait. If this doesn't get your foot tapping, then I don't know what will. I do not tire of this song ever. Definitely an album highlight. These guys posess that organic funk groove that makes the Meters or James Brown so much funkier than all the newer stuff held down by click tracks or (ugh) drum machines. However, as another reviewer noted, it's not AS organic as MMW gets. Next is one of three tracks to have a 4 piece horn section. Now I share the same sentiments with most other reviewers on here that Soulive loses some of it's essence having these guys play along. The tracks (Doin' Something, Cannonball and Roll The Tape) just don't seem to be as spontaneous as the others as just a trio or plus one horn feel, which of course would make sense since it is trio plus horn arrangement. But still, I prefer it to be just as a trio or trio plus horn. Track 3 is Evidence, and this is the debut of Neal playing piano, which some may not like, but I absolutely love. This is another one of my favorite tracks off this album by far. Next is another well known tune, One in Seven, and is one of the more distinctive cuts. Bridge to 'Bama is next and is quite good. Check out how the tenor sax man (not detrimental to the song in any way) always comes back into the same melody during his solo, giving the song a strong sense of unity for which to expand off of. Cannonball is next, one of the horn section pieces, and is fine in its own right, but questionable as to it belonging on here.
Shaheed is track 7, possessing a rather memorable melody played down low on Neal's B3, and serves as a great transition from Cannonball into Romantic, the album's one vocal piece. Stephanie McKay provides those, and one can tell she has as much soul as the three backing her in easily the most emotionally moving piece on Doin' Something. Afterwards is another one of my favorite tracks, Solid. It just has that quirkiness to it which I've grown to love from these guys. Next is Roll The Tape, which I like best of the three horn section pieces. Some of the solos on here seem rather haunting for the key/mode they're chosing, very modern and cool. Last is another on of my favorite cuts, Joe Sample. Two simple melodies start it off and they end it all with one statement of the Steppin' riff off of Turn It Out. But wait! Probably the most surprising thing of this album exists after the song supposedly ends. It is Neal playing solo piano in more of a true jazz-classical style, and it is astounding; first because one most likely wouldn't expect it from him, and second, one wouldn't expect to hear it on a Soulive album! Assuming you can appreciate the piano greats like Bill Evans, McCoy, Chick and Herbie, you should love this. This album I hope I should not tire of for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars Horn Controversy.......2002-03-30

As there seems to be a bit of controversy over the horn section I thought I'd break the tie. First of I play trumpet so there's nothing I like more than some fat brass licks and solos, however, most of the tracks with horn arangements seem a little out of place and choppy if you will. Also in comparison with their first album this one does have a smooth and slightly overproduced sound which seems to be taking them farther and father from their original vibe of "live preformance as the escence of music" (or somthin like that). Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad albumto put on and groove to, it just doesn't have that same raw, in-the-club, jam feel that turn it out did.

5 out of 5 stars Soulive is amazing.......2002-02-07

I love this CD, and would definately recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Sweetheart Throws Down Again!.......2007-03-12

In a world dominated by the likes of Keith Frank, Boozoo Chavis, and Rockin' Dopsie, Rosie Ledet has solidified her place in Zydeco music. With "Show Me Something," Ledet gives the listener everything they can handle and more. There's the pure party tracks such as the title track and "Get Your Dance On" and then there's the bluesy, Creole soul found in songs like "Zydeco For A Living" and "Days Gone By." Where Rosie works best is in her sultry, sexy, and sometimes dirty tunes like the blistering cover of "Lady Marmalade," "For Your Love," "Set My Soul On Fire" and the wonderful "Open Invitation." My personal favorite track on this album is "All Part Of The Game."

If you're looking for straight ahead, party time Zydeco, Rosie Ledet is the lady you need. If you've never heard Zydeco before, start right here with "Show Me Something." From there, take on the aforementioned players like Frank and then explore the history of Creole and Zydeco music with Canray Fontenot and Amedie Ardoin.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginning of a wonderful career.......2005-11-04

This 2-Fer package collects Nancy Wilson's first two albums, recorded in 1959 and 1960. Only 22, she sounds like she's been singing for many years beyond her age. Her voice is earthy and instantly captivating, and on slow numbers in particular she demonstrates tremendous control: she can do almost anything with her voice.

Although she can sing anything handed her, she is best on ballads that are at least somewhat blues inflected: her ability to get inside songs like PASSION FLOWER, NIGHT MIST, and GUESS WHO I SAW TODAY is incredible. The arranging by Billy May is very supportive of her stylings. This is an excellent CD, and illustrates why jazz musicians such as Cannonball Adderley were so crazy about her. Definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars A Young Singer On Her Way To Stardom.......2004-10-20

Don't let Nancy Wilson's young age fool you at the time she recorded these excellent songs. She was only 22 when "Like In Love" was made and a mere 23 years-old for the "Something Wonderful" sessions, but she was already an old pro. "Something Wonderful" can also be used to describe this great 2-fer (2 albums on one CD) EMI Import from Europe. The sound remastering is superb. You can hear every nuance of Nancy's voice and each instrument in Billy May's great orchestra comes thru loud and clear. I hate to say it, but these European and Japanese Import CD's of jazz artists really put the American CD versions to shame. For some reason, the Import CD's just sound so much better.

Back to Nancy Wilson......again, don't let her age fool you. She may have been young, but her voice carries a world of experience, sounding like someone who's been thru decades of joy and heartaches in the game of love. She gives some words just enough "bite" to add emphasis to a phrase or syllable. Ms. Wilson's phrasing has always been impeccable, it's just unconceivable how someone so young could pull this off. Every song here is well chosen and demonstrates Nancy's remarkable artistry. Not too long after these recordings were released to the public, Nancy Wilson became the best-selling artist at Capitol Records, and it's easy to see why. A "Must Have" for any Nancy Wilson fan ! You won't regret it. The sound quality alone is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Tart, swinging, and sexy.......2003-12-02

It's amazing still to hear such musicality and personal style in a singer so young at the time of these recordings. Her sources (Dinah Washington, Jimmie Scott) are clear, but
it's already pure Nancy.
