"On The Edge," "Heart Thumping," "Poetic," and "Romantic." These are some of the ways to describe David E. Carter's new CD release."
Product Description
Death Defying is a reflection of my life experiences. "Whisper" really relects how I feel about my sister taking her life. "Still I Don't Know Me" is about having many of my questions about life finally answered, yet, still not feeling as though I know myself. "Meant To Be" is a tender ballad, about two people, wanting to be loved-wanting to love in return-but at a point whether neither are possible.

Those involved thought it would be a good idea to record this album live in a studio, complete with audience, rather than in a performing venue as was, and is, custom. It would seem that this was done to facilitate producer Jack Nietzche and the sound he was looking for while still providing Henske with her 'element' - the live experience and a sympathetic audience to project herself at. Assuming that was their intent, they succeeded, though I would argue that the record would've been more powerful if it were a proper studio recording, sans audience. Even in its 'liveness' the studio itself can always be heard in the acoustics and the instances in which Judy rambles between songs she has no sense of place because it sounds like she's talking in a studio, which she is. The songs still sound great because with Nietzche's small army of session players and singers, they were meant to be recorded in-studio. That's why I think the album would've been better as a straight studio record.
Musically, this record is the logical middle-ground between Henske's earlier acoustic recordings and her later-'60s work with Jerry Yester, though a little closer to the earlier period. As mentioned before, Jack Nietzche of Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound' fame is on board with his penchant for slicker, more elaborate arrangements than one was accustomed to hearing on previous Henske recordings. No knock on Nietzche though - his production matched with Henske's big voice is the magic on this album - as well as the work of guitarist John Forsha who plays an electric 12-string throughout the record, giving the material a distinct folk-rock feel that's very 1966.
The opening track, 'Hey Baby', will make you forget all about Eric Andersen's original acoustic version which wasn't bad itself. It's a perfect folk-rock recording. I also like 'Sing A Rainbow' and how Henske makes what is essentially a nursery rhyme sound soulful and important and as if there's some deeper content than what everybody else realizes. At the risk of being esoteric, compare 'Sing A Rainbow' to Pharoah Sanders' 'Colors' from his 'Karma' album and laugh at how similar they are. 'Saved' is an enjoyable gospel send-up in the same vein as 'The Salvation Army Song' from her debut. 'Ace In the Hole' starts sluggishly but catches fire halfway through, and 'I've Been Loving You Too Long' and 'Nobody Knows' are both interesting and competent though I prefer the originals by Otis Redding and the Dillards, respectively. Henske says 'Betty and Dupree' is her favorite song off this record, but I think it's the big lemon, because it's too long and also because it's the kind of murder-ballad she wore out on her previous records.
All in all, good singing, good production, bad live feel, and bad comedy too many times. Three stars.
