If you can imagine Nick Drake and Tim Buckley a little more focused but just as deliciously melodic and melancholy, you'll have an idea of what Roberts is after and what he achieves here on his solo "adult" debut. Songs like "Old Cafe" document the ache of a modern breakup with an ear for the civilty on the surface and the chest-cracking emotion further down. When that bass slowly kicks in and Roberts channels Van Morrison, no listener can help but KNOW what is going on. Goosebumps follow every time I hear that moment on the disc. Roberts has diverse and excellent musical, literary and cinematic influences but has the good instincts to play to his own strengths and not bow too far in the direction of his various artistic meccas. Many latecomers to Roberts' career may not know that beneath the amazing kindergarten pop artist of "Great Big Sun" renown lurks a documenter of rue and remorse with the Tinman's heart medal pinned, not to his sleeve, but maybe just inside his lapel.
