5 out of 5 stars quialty music.......2004-04-15

this album is outstanding. illogic is a true mc, that deserves respect. his lyrics are fun, deep, broad, astract, original....everything!! the thing i like most about him tho, is his delivery--the way the words flow out his mouth, his cadence, is simply outstanding. just great breath control. Contrary to others, i loved the production of this album. every track complemented ILL's direction. i got this album about a month ago and can't stop listening to it. Really feeling him. My favorite cut...."check it out"

"purified, still i demonstrated the wack is eliminated'"

4 out of 5 stars worth buying for "hate in a puddle alone".......2001-11-28

illogic. what an amazing talent. his lyrics are incredible and "hate in a puddle" has to be one of the greatest tracks i've ever heard. some of the beats are misses but on the whole this album is a must and illogic's upcoming lp will no doubt be great as well

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical Masterpiece!.......2001-05-31

This album is absolutely brilliant! At first, I recieved it and didn't enjoy the beats that much, but once I sat down and listened to the lyrics I was just amazed! Imagine listening to Ras Kass's Soul on Ice and you'll understand what I mean! Well, even though the production isn't amazing or will get you to bump your head with pounding bass every song, there are some majestic production moments. My two favorite beats are from the songs "Angel" and "Hate in a Puddle" in which producer Blueprint uses soft piano to correspond with the tone of the song. Illogic is an emcee that should rank in the upper echelon of any knowledgeable hip hop head's list. His ability to switch from battle raps ("Blaow and "Me Vs. Myself") to conceptual poetics that are amazing ("Angel and "Hate in a Puddle"). For fans of underground rap, there are a few guest spots. These include Dose-One, BlackSmif, Lioness, and Blueprint. So to conclude, GET THIS ALBUM JUST FOR THE ILL LYRICS!!

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2000-02-12

Coming out of an already diverse music collection I haven't been able to stop playing this disc. I've been listening to it everyday since I got it and continue to love it even more. All in all it's happy music. I don't think there is a single bad song on this disc. I have yet to hear any of their other stuff but I can't wait to hear some more of it because it's just that kind of music that makes you feel happy. It's just great, check it out.

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL, PHENOMENAL , 100% TALENT.......2000-01-30

This band music is a must to listen to. Been a life time dead head, I injoy phish also. But no band has moved me the way STRANGEFOLK has. As writers of music ;everyone of their songs are moving.I never heard a bad song from them.Their music will make you dance (don't dance "maby"but you will find your self moving)If you have chance to see STRANGEFOLK do so you will have no regreats. If you read this review buy all their CD'S. You will not regreat it.Enjoy People.

5 out of 5 stars Expansive with evidence of maturity............1999-11-17

This album, as opposed to their previous semi-independant efforts, has a higher quality of production while retaining the earthy feel of their off the cuff style of music. Expansive vocals and lyrics accompany the incredible guitar playing with songs that also have more of a groove than their previous, but none the less inspiring, efforts. An excellent presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Disc from an excellent band.......1999-11-05

I can't stop listening to this CD. I absolutely love it. The Band is amazing, catch them anytime they're in town.

5 out of 5 stars SEE SPOT RUN IS A KOSHER GOOD TIME.......2003-07-26

I recently saw SSR perform, last night actually. These guys, especially Randy, are simply genuine entertainers. They aren't glitzy chumps putting on a dance recital. They are pure musicians with talent pouring out in every song. I have only heard their music on Sarnia, Canada radio stations, because in the USA, we don't quite have their albums in circulation. Downloading their music is quite difficult as well.
They just relaxed after their show and hung out in the bar they played in. Good people. Cheers to them.

5 out of 5 stars See Spot Run - Weightless.......2001-02-01

See Spot Run had a huge hit in Canada with Weightless. The song was the first time in Canadian history that an independant band made it to Top 10 on the Rock chart. The band then remixed the song (which is on the singles collection) and the song went Top 5 on the Top 40 chart. As if that wasn't enough, then they translated it into French (the band is from Montreal) and it went to number one in French (this is also on the Singles Collection and is weird but fun to listen to if you can't speak French). In fact Weightless is now recognized as one of the Top 100 Canadian Hits of All Time - I think it is #82 on this chart.

I have worked with these guys and they are amazing people - super nice guys. They tour a lot, but only in Canada so far, and their show is great! If you get a chance - check them out - you won't be sorry.

Anyway, the cd rocks and there are a couple of good tunes to dance to also.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Canadian Band.......2001-01-02

Jan. 2001. See Spot Run is one of the best bands anyone will ever discover, unfortunately not many people have discovered them. They have been working hard with their music since before their first little known album, "Traces" in '93 .Weightless is their Third Album, Ten Stories High being their second. Weightless is completely different from their other two and yet just as amazing. Every time they come up with something new and exciting and none of their songs sound like a repeat of the last. Weighless is not the only great song on this C.D, Terrified, Girl LIke you, Do you Want to be my Grilfriend and the rest of the songs are also equally as exciting. All the songs you will find are wonderfully written and fun to listen to. Weightless, the title track is my favorite song, and it has been since it first came out in '99. There are other versions of Weightless, including more than one french version. See Spot Run's lead singer (Chris Brodbeck) and their Guitarist (Randy Bowen) are both originally from Montreal and it is great that they write fantastic French songs as well as English. These French versions can't be found on this album, but can easily be found on the Weighless single so not to worry:) The Weightless Album is full of great songs, as is the band full of great members. If you ever get a chance to see them live, go for it! It will be one of the most fun concerts you will ever experience! This Album is worth having, and the music is enjoyable for everyone. Keep Smiling all! :)

5 out of 5 stars Fun,Fun,Fun!.......2000-05-22

There is no other way to describe See Spot Run than FUN! I don't know a lot about music, but I do know that variety is something this band does possess. From "Terrified" to "Do you want to be my Girlfriend", you'll never mistake one song for another; there's something for everyone on this album. See Spot Run is one of those "best kept secrets". If you ever get the chance to see them live, you'll know they play for fun and understand that's what it's all about. They'll never sell-out and probably will never be famous; I think they're actually O.K. with that. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD to hear what music is supposed to be about; and if you can get your hands on their debut album "Ten Stories High", don't think twice; the song "Au Natural" rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Rock than spans generations.......2000-05-13

This is terrific CD with nearly all the cuts being enjoyable, which I find to be a rare trait. Some songs are superb and I don't understand why they haven't done better on the charts: Weightless; Girl Like You; and Terrified. My wife & I have played this CD way more than any other duirng the past 3-4 months.

2 out of 5 stars Let's be Real.......2001-05-08

I think this is grossly overrated by previous reviewers. Comparisons to "No Depression" acts like Son Volt don't hold up well (Son Volt can actually write songs you want to hear over and over). As far as original songwriters, Joe Henry has it all over this act. Rusty Miller is an average songwriter, arranger, and singer. This release is OK, but barely so. Much better pickins elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars best original outing of the year.......2000-12-07

Easily the most interesting release of the year, and, possibly the last few. Nary a clinker song on the release. Admittedly, they sound quite a bit like the long-gone Replacements at their very (too brief) best--that's certainly not a bad thing to sound like. Funny, interesting lyrics and arresting tunes. When they do venture into some country-esque stuff, it makes one realize what country rock might have been, if it hadn't been perverted by the '70s schlock. This reclamation service is worth the listen, alone. Highly, highly recommended. Keep your ears open to these folks in the future. And the other reviews are correct: they are blisteringly fine live.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2000-11-28

Jackpot's latest album is a example of pure rock. There are 11 excellent tracks on it, with my favorite tracks being weightless and She's So Cool. If they are playing live in your area, make sure that you go see them!

3 out of 5 stars California's best kept secret.......2000-05-18

As with most great live bands, the true essence of Jackpot's music cannot be conveyed in a recorded format. However, their latest release "weightless" comes pretty close, especially on the slower numbers. A much more cohesive album than their last offering "Boneville", "weightless" is a collection of finely crafted American songs that readers of "No Depression" will love. "Whiskey" gets my vote for the best song of 1999-2000. Likes its namesake, that song is the sickness and the cure! However, the album as a whole tends to drag a bit. Rusty Miller is an incredible songwriter and the rest of the band is top-notch, but I just wish they would have produced a more diverse collection of songs that better represents their infectious live shows. Still, well worth the money and definitely a band to keep an eye on. If Jackpot is playing near your home, it is your duty as an American music lover to go ckeck them out.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing...If you like hard-rock/metal.......2005-07-17

This is everything hard music should be...makes me proud to be a Texan knowing these guys are from Dallas. If you're looking for a comparison, I'd have to say these guys remind me mostly of Drowning Pool (DP's first cd). What made Drowning Pool so great in my opinion is the fact that they knew how to do metal. I can't stand hard music when the vocals suck, and trust me, these are about as good as it gets with hard rock/metal.
Gotta give a listing on this one..

    1. Boys Lie Girls Steal - 4.5/5 - Excellent opener in the vein of skrape or bands of the sort. Sure the title is corny but who cares, the song kicks.
    2. From Laughing Comes Crying - 3.5/5 - Not the catchiest but it has its moments, just a lil repetitive.
    3. Piss And Vinegar - 3/5 - Cornball lyrics "too many freaks and not enough circus" make this hard to listen to even though the hooks are catchy and pounding.
    4. Comfort From A Bomb - 5/5 - The #$%! nothin more to say.
    5. Silverback - 4.5/5 - Also a little repetitive but dang its too good to skip.
    6. Audio Star Satellite - 2.5 - They kinda change their style with this one, and not for the better.
    7. Racer X - 5/5 - Besides the cool sounding title I'd have to say this is not only the best song on the cd but the BEST metal song in the genre today..if nothing else, listen to this song. Killer chorus.
    8. Mouth Wide Shut - 4/5 - If you can get past the "uh huh" thing the singer does this one kicks @$$. Awesome riffs.
    9. Paperheart - 4.5/5 - Yikes, a really angry love song. Nice guitar work and vocals.
    10. Radio Drowning - 4/5 - Nice outro, with less metal on this track than the rest, more of an angry southern hard rock sound if you will.

Looking forward to picking up the other two discs by this band.

5 out of 5 stars SLO RO no more........2005-03-15

Although the band is no more, this is a great CD. I fully recommend this CD to all fans of this type of music. I first saw them at a concert here in Dallas called BFD. They were on the side stage and were great. Spent more time watching them than on the main stage watching the big bands.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2004-05-09

I first heard Slow Roosevelt in the most recent DBZ movie, Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, in which they play 2 of their songs, Boys Lie, Girls steal, and Silverback. I thought the music was awesome and I decided to look into the bands. I found this on here and it was only $2.88 so I decided What the heck? The music is really great, and even if you aren't a DBZ fan, you should buy this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great CD.......2004-04-26

I really love rock and after I had heard Slow Roosevelt, I loved it even more. I had first heard of Slow Roosevelt when I had seen Dragonballz "Broly the Ledgendary Super Sayin". The movie was great and the music was just as good. So I checked out one of the bands (which was Slow Roosevelt). They did two songs from the cd on the movie and I loved them. Not only were the two songs from the movie great but so was everything else. I hope my review encourages you to get this great cd.

    5 out of 5 stars GREATNESS.......2004-03-25

Peter Thomas is a God. This CD has no flaws. Every song from the single Boys Lie Girls Steal to the hardcore Silverback rock. If you are a fan of hardcore rock music you need to buy this album. Here is a song by song rundown:
Boys lie girls steal: 10/10 The radio single off of the CD
From laughing comes crying: 10/10 Very good vocals
Piss and vinegar: 10/10 One of the best songs on the album
Comfort from a bomb: 10/10 The lyrics to this song are absolutely amazing
Silverback: 10/10 Best song on the CD
Audio star satellite: 9/10 Love the guitar work on this song
Racer X: 10/10 Another great song
Mouth Wide Shut: 10/10 Very catchy song
    Paperheart: 10/10 Good song
Radio Drowning: 10/10 Very good lyrics on this song that mean something

      Product Description

“Superman” Jay Harrison, along with his brother “Shockin” Shaun Harrison and their cousin, beat-box maniac Jacques “Jock” Harrison, put forth one of the illest Warlock releases from the mid 80s. Along with Krown Ruler’s “Paper Chase”, “Weightless” is one of the ‘harder’ albums from the Warlock catalog that comes to mind. Released in 1986, this family affair laced us with incredibly powerful cuts like “Feed Us The Beat”, “Rip the Cut” and the track “Ill”, all featuring the qualities that make the Skinny Boys dope: strong rhymes, scratches and mouth beats to boot. In the 80s, the Bridgeport, Connecticut based trio sold hundreds of thousands of records, and toured the world with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop. With the release of this official reissue from Warlock and Traffic, here is your chance to own this now hard-to-come-by album from a group that never really received the recongition they deserved.

      2 out of 5 stars Derivative and off-key "darkwave".......2005-12-30

Let's put the inevitable, obvious (and tedious) comparisons to Depeche Mode aside for a moment. Xero/G's Are You Weightless is, pun intended, weightless. The arrangements (all synths) are standard without anything original or interesting standing out. It's utterly derivative. You've heard it all before and most of us with a mid-priced synth could come up with equally mundane stuff. But that's not what kills it for me (I usually enjoy such stuff for, at least, background to everyday life)- the vocals (female) are amateurish. As much as I hate to be harsh and insulting, this singer should keep it in the shower and/or car. She has no range, no style, and, worst of all, no ear. If you have any sense of pitch (which the singer and producer apparently have not), this music may even make you cringe a bit. In a word, and to my disappointment, this artist is BLAH.

5 out of 5 stars great synth new wave revived.......2005-10-31

The who remake is incredible. I love this cd. I realy dig the music on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Good music, flat singing.......2005-08-25

While overall I do like this CD, it has interesting composition and beats that don't fall into the repetitive realm like some electro does and it's even very dreamy. I like the singer's attempts but I have to point our her singing is very flat at times, something I hear in many corny female sung goth music. She needs to stop singing in all of her low ranges as it's limiting the stuff she could be performing.

If it wasn't for the singer's flatness, I would have given thes album 4 stars instead of 3. For those into the new type of sythy music and somehat dreamy compositions I still recommend you at try this album as it's not bad at all.

5 out of 5 stars So Amazing I Can't Find My Out Of Here.......2005-08-02

This CD is simply one of the greatest that I have ever listened to. Seth and Victoria have combined to produce a tremendous sound. I haven't been this excited since Xymox "Twist of Shadows". If you like a wonderful voice, great beat, and serious synth - then this is it.
Try these 5 songs and you will see why this band will really break out.
      1) Falling into Dreams - for so long and all along I have waited for this song
      2) Remember - driving beat and great vocals
      3) Carry On - Haunting
      4) Too much - Lyrics are just too much
      5) Baba O'Reiley - I don't typically like remakes but she has such a wonderful voice that Roger Daltrey would give it 2 thumbs up.

They have a follow-up CD due out soon and it can't come soon enough as I can't get this CD out of my player or my head. And no I do not have anything to do with the band nor the label.

      5 out of 5 stars Great synthpop.......2004-12-26

This is a great CD by a new "new wave" band. Dreamy female vocals enhance the music. I love Run, and here is a statement that will aggravate classic rock fans, but who cares. Xero G's all-synthesized cover of The Who's Baba O'Reilly dwarfs the original! Ok, now that I have fans of The Who up in arms... Long live the Synthesizer!

        Product Description

City Canyons Records proudly announces the release of Sara Wendt's new album WEIGHTLESS WITH LOVE. A former lead singer of the East Village cult band, Homer Erotic and the founder of her own band, Went, Sara Wendt's other-worldly lyrics and bell-like voice have been charming Manhattan audiences for several years now. The songs from Sara's first record, PARACHUTE, have been described by reviewers as music for dreams or like a swim in warm and lovely tropic seas. City Canyons, a Manhattan independent label critically acclaimed for its fresh and orginal releases, recognized the haunting brilliance of Sara's songwriting, and signed her. Now, as she moves out under her own name, Sara's songs gain a whole new emotional intensity. Critics referred to Sara's first City Canyons release, the EP "Here's Us"-- a prequel to WEIGHTLESS WITH LOVE--as a powerful pop gem. But if the EP was powerful, WEIGHTLESS WITH LOVE is majestic, glorious alternative pop rock enriched by folk, Celtic and Far Eastern influences. The new album features exquisitely textured music, both rocking and dreamy with lyrics that glitter like precious jewels telling vivid stories of mystic journeys. It is an album to be savored like the finest of wines.

5 out of 5 stars Abstract? He barely spits a simile..........2003-11-06

Is there a six I can give this album, and why not? This album's production (by Blueprint) is simply put, amazing. Nothing too OUT there, just plain straight up fresh beats that fits Illogic's style and intent for this project perfectly. This album shows the originality and maturity independent artists can have. If I was just reviewing this due to the beats it would get a five, but what captivates me is the lyricism from Illogic. He instantly became high amongst my favorite emcees upon hearing his classic "Unforseen Shadows" album that I accidentally stumbled upon. The level he has raised his vocals here is outright insane. Although this was supposed to be an EP, it turned out even better as an LP, and I doubt the spoken word would've been included.

One review compared this guy to Jay-Z?! Why, because he has confidence that what he says no "pop" rapper could ever dream about writing? Because he accuses the industry of releasing (for the most part today) nonsense to the masses? It's not that industry rappers can't spit, it's that alot of them seem to be doing it as a gimmick JUST to cash in, that's not emceeing. I can see how Blueprint's occasional smirky comments may make it seem like they're "stuck" on themselves (especially on "break bread"), but listen to the content! Listen to what Illogic is saying! Better yet, check out Blueprint's solo album and co-ops with Greenhouse Effect and Soul Position (with RJD2).

There's ten minutes of spoken word, although slightly dry if you were expecting some kind of "Saul Williams" or "Sekou da Misfit" quality slam content, but excellent in its own right at the end of the album. The writings are just plain honest heart felt and inspiring poetry. I'm sorry, but this is just another quality of rhyming that we're dealing with here. This man rhymes at a level unseen to most heads. And the fact that I can play this album to any person who HATES hiphop (or what theyve deduced as hiphop from mainstream hip-pop) and they instantly have RESPECT for the art. They actually get to see hiphop as an ART and not just as "entertainment".

This emcee sets a standard not unlike KRS-ONE, and if he keeps releasing albums of this caliber, I have no doubt he will attain the title of one of the top UNSEEN emcees (which some feel, including myself, that he's already there) of all time. Head's feelin this look out for his more personal, "Write to Death Vol. I" album.

5 out of 5 stars A real poet in hip hop.......2003-10-24

Illogic's definitely got my attention. The man turns his music into pure poetry. After buying this cd about a year ago, I can't wait for this guy to develop a little more and release a full length album. And by full length, I'm not talking under 10 songs. Illogic is unique to the game. His flow is spectacular. His lyrics are deep and abstract. His whole voice and presence, however, aren't what some would call "nerd rap". He isn't a nerd, like some other rappers out there, and his flows are a testament to that.
Blueprint, the Producer, also impressed me a lot with the beats on the album. For some, they may be somewhat hard to sink into. Once you get into them, however, the beats grow on you.
The decent tracks here are Got Lyrics? and Day by day. Got Lyrics? has a neat horn in the backround and a cool chorus, but Illogic's rapping is the highlight. Day by Day features a nice, somber, and smooth beat over more Illogic flows.
The standout tracks, however, are Stop Lying and screenplay. I'm not even going to try to explain how well concieved these songs are, even though that's kinda the point of this review. These tracks prove that when Illogic is at his best, and when blueprint is at his best, these two are some of the hottest artists in the industry. Illogic is a poet's poet. It's like having a modern day Robert frost on the mic. Get this cd. He beats out Aesop rock any day of the week. peace.

5 out of 5 stars Got lyrics? Yes. Got beats? Yes. Perfect Album? Yes........2002-04-22

First heard him on the Aesop Rock - Labor Days album. I read lots of reviews on this album, most of which labeled it a masterpiece. I bought the album, listened to it, loved it, and the rest is history. The new vinyl pressing has an extra song with Aesop Rock, the song is incredable but its only on the vinyl version. I dont give out 5 star ratings that easy, so I really like this album. After hearing the track with Blueprint I'm about to order Greenhouse Effect.

4 out of 5 stars solid performance from the underground's Jay-Z.......2002-03-30

Hate me for comparing Illogic to Jay-Z, but they have a lot in common. Both are talented MCs with big mic presence and lots of attitude. While Jay-Z brags about his money and his women, Illogic brags about his mic skills and generally big-ups himself and his dj. Both have a laid-back attitude that says, "I have nothing to prove." In short, both are long on personality but short on ideas.

And sometimes, that's just fine. This is a nice album with classy, flawless beats by Blueprint (who is a pretty decent MC too). Illogic does his thing with clockwork precision and the confidence of a pro. There's nothing really experimental here (except for a pretty abstract piece of spoken-word at the end of the album), just a solid block of catchy, smart, head-nodding beats and some fairly impressive rhyme-flipping.

One nice thing about this album, by the way, is its length. No huge intros, no wandering skits, no filler. Just one tight song after another. The spoken word at the end is pretty cool too, even if you're not really into that kind of thing.

Illogic is not the savior of hip-hop but he's helping to keep it alive, and with Blueprint backing him he's a force to be reckoned with. This isn't an innovative album but it has a tightness and quality that make it repeat-worthy. 3.5 stars is probably a more accurate rating, but four isn't stretching things too much. If you're new to underground hip-hop and you want something that's not too far out, this is a good place to start.
