East L.A. native Lysa Flores returns with her second solo release The Making of a Trophy Grrl, a post-feminist collection chronicling the coming of age of a Latina in the southern California world of Botox and boob jobs. The record features such luminaries as legendary "X" drummer D.J. Bonebrake and Quetzal Flores from roots-rockers Queztal (Vanguard Records). Her band has toured with the likes of Los Lobos, Rage Against the Machine, Victoria Williams, Ozomatli, El Vez, Green Day, and Mexico's leading rock group, the Jaguares.

Accompanied by an artwork homage to vintage Mexican movie-posters, the songs range from the bilingual narrative of a young immigrant couple's new world struggles (Novia), power-pop sarcasm (The Damaged Ones), raw-tender ballads (Light Among Shadows), and romantic anthems (Birthday, En Que Te Falte). Much of the CD was recorded live-to-tape, to capture the immediacy of her vocal performances. Lysa Flores was born and raised in East Los Angeles, a first generation Mexican-American, and has been a pioneer in the Chicana alternative scene since her teens. She was named by Newsweek as one of 20 young Latinos to watch in the new millennium and was featured in John F. Kennedy's "George" magazine. She has been a member of legendary performance-artist El Vez's band since 1996, traveling across the globe to crowds of up to 100,000 people. As a solo artist, she has opened for the likes of Los Lobos, John Doe of L.A.'s legendary punk-band "X", Green Day, Victoria Williams, and Mexico's leading rock group, the Jaguares. In 1997, she landed a starring role in the critically acclaimed indie-film Star Maps --a favorite at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival-- and, for this, earned a Best Debut Performance nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards. She also served as the film's musical director (which was the first feature film to utilize a track by folk cult-hero Nick Drake), as well as producing the soundtrack for Geffen Records. Additionally, she's appeared in the film "Menace" (1999) with Allison Lohman of "White Oleander" fame, was musical director for the film "Blink of an Eye" that same year , had a recurring guest-starring role on the popular telemundo novela "Reyes Y Rey", and was the lead for the sold-out Hollywood theater production of "The Furthest Room" , a play based on her songs. She runs her own record label "Bring Your Love" which has released her bilingual, street-smart , but literate, folk-punk-- "Tree of Hope" (1998) and roc en espanol artists Los Tijuana Bibles "Women Are From Venus, Men are From Mexico"(BYL2002) Lysa is also featured in "The Best of The Mexican Divas" (Opcion Sonica2003).

Technically a very clean album. It has a good selection of tunes, particularly for the history buff, however some of the polished choral pieces sound funny when you think that most of them are essentially folk tunes that should be sung with a somewhat less practiced air. Overall, worth the purchase for historical value and good production.

A great collection of music from 18th century America.

If you enjoy fifes and drums, choral compositions, patriotic songs, and uplifting music from the birth of America, please get this CD.

A perfect selection for a patriotic American to play, especially on the 4th of July.

5 out of 5 stars Protest Songs of the 1770s.......2002-01-24

The music that was composed and performed during the American Revolution is presented on this 1 hour CD. Since I was a child, I've enjoyed hearing the drum and fife corps on the Fourth of July and during the Presidential inaugurations, and this CD has several good drum and fife marches. Other selections are 18th century protest songs about taxation ("A taxing we will go...} and British tyranny. There are also some good harpsichord numbers contained on this CD. The musicians are excellent and the sound is clear. I don't know how many common people got to hear music like this during the Revolution, but at least this CD gives the 21st Century listener the opportunity enjoy the "popular" music of 200 years ago. Classical music lovers will enjoy this CD too.

I fell in love with this CD from the first track.The music of the American Fife Ensamble is stirring, I felt positivly rebelious. The satarical songs based on the tunes "British Grenadires" and "Hearts of Oak" are like the paintings of W. Hogarth set to music. You should have more than a cursory knowledge of the 18th century though, to fully enjoy this CD

We will never know exactly how these songs sounded when the citizens of Boston were darting black looks to the British regulars on the streets, but I would wager quite a bit that these renditions come pretty close. Of course the "American" accents are an anachronism; but most listeners might be puzzled to hear British accents used for these anti-British songs (with one exception, composed by a British regular!)I have already used selections from this CD to a groups of 3rd and 5th graders and they loved it. So teachers, take note, but be sure they have the words in front of them. A very valuable educational tool that also happens to be a very enjoyable program to hear for its own sake. And as with most New World releases, the annotations alone are worth the price of the product.

This is not Howard Shore and no-one should think it is, however I found it a nice addition to my LOTR music collection. I have all the Shore music and it is outstanding - this is interesting, nowhere near as good, but very nice nonetheless. I especially like the soprano Charlotte Kinder on this CD and I would recommend it just for her contribution in some ways I prefer her to Renee Fleming, but that is of course a subjective statement. The other female singer is ok, but nothing special compared to the originals.

I had real high hopes for the soundtrack cause the movies ROCKED!!! This was a disappointment cause the vocal version of "Into the West" "sucked" cause the lady sounded like she lost her voice an faded in an out. They should have gotten Enya to do the vocals or AT LEAST the Into the West cause the ldy that sung it made the volume "suck" when I thought it would have a BIG finish but instead it had a BIG disappiontment!!!

Just be sure to read up on this closely... it's not the orchestra you hear in the movie, and you may be especially disappointed when you hear the vocal tracts - gone are great talents Enya and Annie Lennox, replaced by no-name voices. This is not BAD music, but don't think you're a genius for capturing the music of the movies on one inexpensive 2-CD set.

Howard Shore's scores to the three Lord of the Rings movies are a classical masterpiece in their own right, and as such I don't mind hearing them played by a different orchestra. While I prefer the originals on the whole, this set has some very nice things to recommend it. The best part is that you get instrumental renditions of the end credits song from each film. My favorite is "Into the West," from The Return of the King, with a cello replacing Annie Lennox's vocal performance. I really disliked Lennox's ugly, popified performance of the song, but I thought that the melody and orchestration were gorgeous, so I could not be more delighted to hear the song performed by a cello, with all original orchestration intact. That one track is worth $20 to me.

5 out of 5 stars This Collection Captures the Lord of the Rings Aura.......2006-01-27

From the song titled "Concerning the Hobbits" which is lighthearted and cheerful, to "The Bridge of Khazad Dum" with it's intense shadowy drums and chants this collection of The Lord of the Rings trilogy's music ensues the essence of all three movies. My favorites are included along with some new added bonus favorites now. "May It Be," "Into the West," and "The Riders of Rohan." The vocals are absolutely beautiful in some of the songs with soothing women's voices that just glide along as if riding the wind of white cottony cloud. The only down side to the CD's that I found dissapointing was that the last three songs, not being sung by the original artists, don't quite rest as well with the soul as the original's, yet are still very beautifully executed. I have listened to them over and over again even as they are different artists. I highly recomend this soundtrack compelation to anyone who enjoy's the Lord of The Rings Movie's Music.

I played my official soundtrack CDs to death so I was looking for a replacement. This is not the real thing. A lot of the tracks aren't even on these, and the order on the rest of them is all mixed up. Bad quality sound, without the energy and passion of the original -- sounds like elevator music. There are even misspellings throughout the playlists. It is not readily obvious to the buyer that it isn't what you think it is, until it arrives.

The Fellowship volume won't play on one of my hard drives at all; it plays, but fuzzily, on my laptop. I gave up before trying it in the CD player in my vehicle.

I was expecting this to be the music from the movies - it isn't. It is nicely done, but if you're expecting the same style and sound as from the movies, look elsewhere (this sounds more MIDI than orchestra).

Simply put, this is one of the finest recordings you will ever hear in its genre. Bel Canto is a world class children's choir, as is evident on every track of this disc. The 2-disc set includes many original compositions by Dr. Z. Randall Stroope, including "There Is No Rose" and "Psalm 23", as well as "Magnificats" from several composers from both the U.S. and abroad. The recording of Biebl's "Ave Maria", in conjunction with the University of Nebraska-Omaha Concert Choir, is simply second to none. If you think you know what a children's choir sounds like, then try this CD. You're in for a surprise ...

    For the many fans of MewithoutYou this may come as a suprise that four of the five members of each are indeed the same.

    This CD itself sounds nothing like mewithoutYou, but enough comparisions to them. If you were to find similarities in the sound it would prob be anywhere from Dashboard Confessional to Sullivan. Very punk and emo, with high ranging vocals.

    The music is very catchy and will have you singing along soon enough.

    This cd is seriously great. The Operation are a great band that gets less than they deserve in terms of popularity. This is soft (dare I say emo? yes), smooth, indie rock at its best.

    I saw this band live and they put on a great show. The fifth song on this cd, "The Together Tree" is their absolute best song. Completely amazing. This is a really great cd for those looking to be inspired and looking for a new way to worship God (who, of course) is the source behind the great lyrics. All in all, very well done and appreciated.

    I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

    I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

    This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

    While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

      She's been compared to so many female vocalists, the comparisons have become meaningless. Lysa Flores creates...with words, with music, with her voice...images and moods that surround us. Lots of people will know and love "Beg, Borrow and Steal" from the Star Maps soundtrack - it has an open-hearted, lusty sentimentality that makes me believe in love. But other songs are just as great if not better - "Queen of the Boulevard" brings a girl driving solo through the mean streets of L.A. to the whole world; "Tree of Hope" evokes Chican@ heroes Diego and Frida in a tragically happy folk dance. Lysa doesn't fit into any category - she is the future of music.
