Heralded as the future of Irish music, Kila discourse in a cut-loose Afro Celt sound that's fresh, funky, and altogether disarming. In polar opposition to what many modern bands do, aping acoustic beats with electronic means, the septet Kila hit a stellar tribal ceilidh groove, translating what might otherwise be electronic sounds back into acoustic indigenous instrumentation and timing. The group sings, chants, and raps in Gaelic, surrounded by fantastically frenetic fiddle, Uilleann pipes, flute, bodhran, bouzouki, guitar, and bass. Tóg É Go Bog É (Gaelic for "take it easy") features 14 brilliant pieces of caustic beauty that range from dervishlike hypnotic frenzy to ambient-textured soundscape to flyaway acid reels to generously progressive tripped-out traditionally based tunes. Kila are the Pogues meet Dave Matthews Band multiplied by the Incredible String Band meets Dirty Three, but not really. They'll blow your lid. Guaranteed. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars The only thing better is to see them live!.......2004-09-10

While in Ireland, a bodhran player recommended KILA to me as an exciting and unique Irish band and he especially praised "Tog E Go Bog E". Like all Irish music it is full of motion and rhythm, but much more complex and compelling. These are accomplished musicians who weave and build their songs into a sound that can physically be felt. To see them live, like I did in Dublin, is an experience I do not ever think I'll match again.

5 out of 5 stars Ireland's Grateful Dead.......2001-02-27

Multi-facetted, frenzied, graceful, bohemian, contemporary Irish tunes and poetic lyrics that are energetic to the end and written and performed by this Irish musical pantheon that have obviously made a pact with the fairies. Fair play to ye lads! Magical stuff from a group that is sure to acquire a cult following. Buy it. Buy 'em all and watch out for their live performances. Blasta go deo. Tóg go bog é agus sin sin.

4 out of 5 stars Good and different!.......2000-08-02

This is one of the most innovative things to hit Celtic music since Mike Oldfield. The label says "Acid Céili [celtic?] Tribal Groove," and that's exactly what you get. Some of it is hard to get into (the tribal stuff) and the acid part is fairly jarring, but without them, it would be just another Celtic disc. Check out Rusty Nails and the title track.

5 out of 5 stars FINELY BEATEN HIPPY TRAD.......2000-03-23

Great addition to a Irish Trad collection but the best Kíla experience is the LIVE experience. WOW, do they put on a great show! Nice people as well. I can only see these guys improving their playing and recording as the years pass. Do your self a favour, Buy this album and keep in touch. Slán slán!

5 out of 5 stars A raw and "reel" disc.......2000-03-18

This is a really great band to see live if you ever get theopportunity. This is one of those discs that you can listen to overand over again; it is by far the most frequently played in our collection. For some inspirational yet simple lyrics take time to translate the Gaelic songs. You might like to check out an artist called Susan McKeown too. END

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful contemporary Celtic music........1999-03-19

I saw Kila last year at the San Francisco Celtic Art & Music Festival. Fantastic! My fondest memory of that year's fest. I hope they tour the states again soon. Get ahold of all of their cds. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......1999-03-14

I first saw Kila in Dublin and purchased their CD "Mind the Gap"- which I highly recommend, but is hard to find. At the end of the evening, the audience wouldn't let them leave, so they sang us a lullaby- one of my favorite memories of Ireland. Their new CD defintely lives up the the first, a wonderful mix of old and new, Irish and other. A definate must have!

5 out of 5 stars The best Irish band I've ever heard.......1999-02-26

The highlight of Womadelaide for me was KiLA who far outshone all other artists at Australia's foremost World Music Festival.Their music brought the audience alive with its Irish jigs, Haunting melodies, and irrisitable dancing rhythms. It was impossible not to buy this CD and take them home with me.

5 out of 5 stars Listening is enjoying.......1998-11-30

Never heard as fascinating mixture of my favorite ingredients in music as this is. Balanced combination of ethno, traditional irish music and raw human voice... And playing live they are more than just sounds around you, they're the atmosphere and the joy of hearing... My life needs a soundtrack and this is such a perfect choice to recommend for any of you who likes to get lost in the music.
