My favorite song is "Pertinear Gone", the yodeling is excellent. This is a definite must for the eclectic listener.

A tasty blend of Renaissance/Folk/Country/Art Rock/Colonial/Skiffle and anything else you'd care to pour in. This man drives all over the road and it's a thrill and a pleasure to ride with him. With extremely original lyrics and themes and haunting melodies ranging from Tender and Touching ("Dangling Autumn", "Best When I'm Gone") to Deliciously Dark ("Pumpkin Patch"), this wonderful CD will stand alone on your music shelf. A recent re-listen to this late-90's release by Virginia-based singer-songwriter Stephen Christoff has brought me a rekindled appreciation for the magic of odd and obscure cross-genre music. Christoff, a virtuoso octave mandolin and singing saw player, crafted this album with a range of sources in mind, drawing equally from traditional Americana, Eastern European folk, and a variety of mysterious music from around the globe.

The indescribable musical eclecticism of this record can only begin to be gleaned with a glance at the musician's credits in the liner notes. Christoff, apart from his deft work on the mandolin and saw, peppers the panacea of sounds with hand flute, fretless throat bass, bottles, cupped voices, slide tenor banjo, Tibetan Monks, and vocal trumpet. As if this musical stew was not enough, Christoff brought in a variety of other musicians to play anything from accordion and djembe (on "Dangling Autumn") to gut snare and viola da gamba (on "Human Cannonball Reunion"). As should be imagined, the resulting music is shear wonder to enjoy - and is anything but what you've heard before. And this only touches upon the musical side of One Ring Circus.

Lyrically, Christoff weaves stories of pickpockets and executioners, human cannonballs and gravediggers - brewing up a vast mix of images that spark the imagination into carnival fury. A prolific wandering minstrel and world traveler in his own right, Christoff writes songs that leave the listener wondering if these tales are fantastic fables or journalistic accounts of a life of perpetual mystery and absurdity - or perhaps, a little bit of both.

As a whole, One Ring Circus creates a strange and beautiful world of its own, where hitchhiking lives on, everyday objects can serve as musical instruments, and wanderlust is the norm....
