About the Artist
The hits continue for Marcus Hummon, named "Nashville's Top Songwriter" by the Nashville Scene's Readers Poll for the second year in a row. Most recently, his co-written, "Born to Fly," perched Sara Evans on top of the charts, along the way garnering a CMA nomination for Song of the Year. This comes on the heels of back to back chart-smashing singles from the Dixie Chicks, "Ready to Run," which also won a Grammy, and "Cowboy, Take Me Away," both co-written with Dixie Chick Martie Siedel.
Marcus has been one of Nashville's most consistently successful and innovative songwriter/musicians, often playing on the recordings of his own compositions, as is the case on the Wynonna's #1, Grammy nominated, "Only Love." Other notable hits include Tim McGraw's powerful number one song, "One of These Days," Bryan White's summer smash, "Love is the Right Place," Alabama's ode to baseball's bush leagues, "The Cheap Seats," and many others.
Along the way, he has also found time to record and release four albums of his own. The first, the critically acclaimed All in Good Time, on Columbia Records, then two sterling independent label releases, The Sound of One Fan Clapping and Looking for the Child on Velvet Armadillo Records, and finally the recent release of Supernatural on the London Rock Label, Track Records. Marcus's diverse career has also included a published book of poetry, and the lyrics for the PBS children's cartoon series, "Book of Virtues."
Venturing into theatre, Marcus has received Metro and Tennessee Arts Grants for his three musicals, American Duet, co-written with Bill Feehely, Artistic Director of Actors Bridge, Francis of Guernica, recently performed by Tennessee Repertory Theatre, and his latest musical drama, Warrior, a work based on the life of Jim Thorpe, the great Native American Athlete, which premiered at the new Country Music Hall of Fame. His work has not only played to sell out crowds, but also generated great reviews. In his review of American Duet, The Tennessean's theatre critic, Kevin Nance, wrote:
"...Hummon offers a visionary alternative. His score for American Duet-a pulsing, yearning, soaring amalgam of Afropop and country styles- masterfully delineates and then subtly blends the two genres so that, by the end, the differences between them all but disappear and a new thing, a third thing, has taken their place. The result is no self-conscious hybrid; it has its own kind of integrity, perfect and whole."
Along with several releases, current and upcoming from Chely Wright, Rascal Flatts, SheDaisy, Lee Ann Womack, Joanna Janét, and many others, Marcus continues to move into new challenges with a screen play co-written with Alice Randall (Wind Done Gone) for Storyville Pictures, slotted to begin filming this year, and who knows what else...

Fiddler Andrea Zonn, a major contributor throughout the record, is especially forward here, taking over in the chorus behind Hummon's sympathetic tenor where normally a guitar or piano would do the expected thing.
As the title cut suggests, Hummon is no world-weary cynic. His songs all betray a joy and optimism fired by faith. You get the feeling he'd be an engaging companion on a long drive, as would this record.
