Savall family extravaganza.......2006-01-27
Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras are the two giants in the Catalan early music scene. On this album they enlist the help of percussionist Pedro Estevan and their two children to produce some truly exceptional music. Jordi Savall, the most famous family member, almost fades into the background, although he is obviously the rock that anchors the album. His playing is superb, and it seems as though it was most likely him who chose the excellent repertoire. Figueras, like wine, is only improving with age. Also like wine, however, she's a bit of an acquired taste; I am a huge fan of straight tone singing and even I took a while to get used to her bizarre, raw sound. It's worth it, however, as she is one of the most intriguing singers of this era.
Daughter Arianna is a world-class artist in her own right. Like her father, she is multi-talented; she sings, plays the harp, and composes (her contribution to this album, "La Salve," is beautiful and affecting, but some of the selections on her own solo album "Bella Terra" are far superior). Like her mother, her voice is haunting and beautiful, more polished than the elder woman but slightly less interesting. She sounds particularly lovely in the background of the first track. Ferran Savall also lends his voice to the album, although his singing is far less classical sounding, which may be a plus to some listeners. "Noumi, Noumi, Yaladatii," which Figueras has previously recorded as a solo, includes a vocalise from Ferran astonishing in its power, although his one solo on this album, "La Canco Del Lladre," is the least impressive track, as his voice can be irritating after a while and the song itself is repetitive and overlong.
The instrumental tracks are universally excellent. Jordi Savall is one of the world's best viola da gamba players and this album proves that he is still at the top of his game. Arianna's virtuosic harp solo is one of the album's highlights; her playing is less restrained and more visceral than most harpists. Pedro Estevan seems to have very little to do, but a little goes a long way with this music.
I sincerely hope that this will not be the last album to feature the Savall-Figueras family together. These five musicians have produced an album of surreal beauty, not to be missed.

Album Description
Here is the captivating sequel to The Fairie Round - and Shelley Phillips once again dazzles the ears with her work on oboe, harp, English horn, recorders and pennywhistle. With her talented friends including Barry Phillips, William Coulter, special guests Linda Waterfall and Harris Moore, and others, on guitar, cello, flute and more, she presents enchanting instrumental arrangements of folk, traditional, classical and contemporary music from England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Brittany. Indie Award (AFIM) nominee 1995.
Elizabethan songs (When Laura Smiles, It Was a Lover and His Lasse), Renaissance dances (Pavane and Galliard, Courante), traditional Celtic airs (Sally Gardens, The Faerie Queene, The Parting Glass) and Breton rondes are among the delights you'll discover on this charming album by one of Gourd's favorite artists.
Customer Reviews:
Pastime With Good Company.......2004-06-29
Shelley Phillips credentials are quite remarkable. She plays harp, recorders, oboe, English horn, and whistle. Not just to dabble, but very well indeed. She is a member of several consorts, appears on an armload of recordings, and directs the Santa Cruz Community Music School. Whew!! And if you take the time to read the liner notes on this album (my favorite) wou will discover she has a far roving ear and eye, and despite a strong fondness for celtic work, is quite capable of performing Faure, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and a few friends as well.
Her chief accompanist is Barry Phillips, who plays enough instruments to make an ensemble between the two. But the cast includes many others, including an appearance by William Coulter. Seriously, if the music making on this album does not satisfy you, there is nothing to be done for it. Phillips wavers back and forth between original instruments and some fairly daring arrangements. Which makes the albums more than just an idle pastime.
Frankly though, this is light music - no distressing airs permitted. Much dance music, and a few things that very well could be. A sunny spirited album that reminds us that our ancestors knew how to have a good time. This is the kind of thing that we used to get together in college and rattle out on the back steps and stairwell. Not so well played (well, some of us played well) but in the spirit of entertainment and edification.
The last thing I expected when starting this review is that I would have an attack of nostalgia, but there it is. Phillips has a knack of drawing out the nature of the music rather than producing academic performances, and avoiding over production as well. This is extremely accessible work - buy all means give it a listen.
A delight and a treat.......1998-10-09
The very talented musician Shelley Phillips delivers a consistently wonderful offering of traditional instrumental tunes, most of Celtic and European origin. She is one of the extremely talented group of musicians who comprise groups like Orison and Northern Lights, and all of their work is a musical feast. This is no exception. A CD to be treasured and listened to often.

Nigel Eaton is one of the great hurdy gurdy players of our time. He's recorded widely in popular (remember Page and Plant?) as well as classical performances. This is a well-rounded selection of 18th century and beyond--not to be missed by any music lover.

The pristine tones and lilting melodies of the Celtic harp are immediately inviting. Celtic Harpestry, a companion to a PBS performance special, explores a sound both traditional and modern in a tasteful and evocative collection. This isn't a purist's album--half of the harpists aren't even from the Celtic isles, and among the album's old Irish chestnuts is "My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic. The otherwise-joyful Belfast Harp Orchestra tromp through the James Horner tune, almost pulling some subtlety out of its overwrought themes. Turlough O'Carolan, the blind patron saint of the Celtic harp, might wish he were deaf as well, if he could hear it. But the bard would be thrilled to hear the 12-piece BHO playing the traditional "Brian Boru's Set" or one of founder Janet Harbison's zephyrlike originals. Her "Earth, Water, Wind and Fire" elicits shifting textures and colors that belie their traditional roots. The song also exemplifies the ethereal side of the Celtic harp explored on Celtic Harpestry with artists like Rüdiger Oppermann. Playing a wire-strung harp accompanied by bass and keyboards, the German harpist soars through crystalline melodies whether he's playing traditional tunes or originals. The most traditional sound actually comes from the American players. Cheryl Ann Fulton gives a straight-up rendition of "Breton Medley," and jazz harpist Deborah Henson-Conant is refreshingly restrained, faithfully rendering "Londonderry Aire (Danny Boy)" and "The Minstrel Boy." Although Celtic Harpestry focuses on slow airs, there are robust performances here, including those by Máire Ni Chathasaigh's group and the harp and vocal duo of Sileas. Outside of the Titanic love theme, Celtic Harpestry is an elegantly wrought collection. --John Diliberto

Celtic Meets Classical.......2007-07-12
Hard rock it ain't. Celtic Harpestry: A Contemporary Celtic Collection may cite "contemporary" in its title, but the style is classic. Rich harmonies and intricate musical textures rise to a crescendo in "Earth, Water, Wind And Fire," the final cut, performed by the Belfast Harp Orchestra.
This collection overlaps several genres. Celtic, classical and New Age meet in what may be the instrument most associated with classical melodies.
If you are a fan of Rap or Hip Hop, keep looking. If you want a hoedown, this is not going to be your cuppa joe. But if you are looking for something elegant - background music for a business or important meeting, for example - this is a wonderful, understated choice.
Excellent Celtic Cd.......2006-12-30
A sibling to "Harpestry," this is a wonderful cd. I am a harper and head up a Celtic Harp Choir at my church (I'm a fulltime church music director), and I have used this cd as a model for my musicians. It's very pleasant to listen to, and you definitely get a good feel for the Celtic style. I highly recommend this!
Just lovely!.......2003-05-25
This uplifting compilation CD from Imaginary Road Records, actually the soundtrack to the public television special "Celtic Harpestry at Lismore Castle, Ireland", is simply beautiful. Especially wonderful are the five numbers by the Belfast Harp Orchestra, an ensemble of 12 harpists who demonstrate remarkable intonation and stunning coordination as they play together on instruments that are difficult enough just to play alone. What a great concept, and what great musicianship! Also featured are individual performers such as Maire Ni Chathasaigh on Irish harp, Rudiger Oppermann on wire-strung harp, Cheryl Ann Fulton on a contemporary lever harp, the harp and song duo Sileas, and Deborah Henson-Conant on a "Camac `Baby Blue' Celtic electroharp". Other instruments, including Uilleann pipes and whistle, violin, viola and concertina, occasionally join in, but the focus is on the harp itself. In all its many forms and combinations, the harpestry on this recording remains soothingly delicate in timbre while at the same time scintillating in technique--in short, a pure delight. If you enjoy "Celtic Harpesty", you're sure to like it's companion release, "Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection", featuring more of a worldwide assortment of harpers. Another great harp compilation CD is "Faces of the Harp" from Narada.
Amazing.......2001-08-30
I always had a desire to learn to play the Celtic harp...and the PBS special and especially this CD made that desire boil over. Don't buy another harp CD before you've listened to this one!
No matter how many times I have listened to this recording, I ALWAYS break into a smile when the Belfast Harp Orchestra begins to play. Nothing prepares you for that 12-harp sound!
Order this CD with overnight shipping!!!
The best harpestry CD!.......2001-07-23
One day in a music shop, my hand knocked three CDs off of a rack. The first CD, though the case was cracked, caught my eye. I bought it five minutes later. In this sweetly harmonized collection, nearly all the songs are wonderful. I would have bought the CD for only My Heart Will Go On-the song is a skillful take of the Titanic (movie) theme, and it seems almost to have a voice of its own. This is a must-have for any harp music lover!

Gaelic Fiddling: A Musical Feast.......2002-12-29
I knew I would love the music on this CD from the cover alone, a close-up view of a violin (fiddle)! The back cover photo was just as inviting, rolling hills, with a field of wild flowers, and a small farm building. The music is fresh, lively, and full of expression just as the Gaelic language itself! Most of the tunes are jigs, reels, airs, and strathspeys, many are accompanied on Uillean pipes or bagpipes, one is played on the guitar and another has a piano accompaniment. The titles to each sets speak volumes: "O'er the Moor Among the Heather", "Clumsy Lover Set", "The Iron Man", "Brucie and the Troopers", "Kilts in the Fire", " Gaelectric Blues" ... each has 3 - 6 different pieces played in succession, while difficult at times to tell when one begins and the other starts, it is absolulely thrilling to have about 45 - 47 *different* musical tunes on one CD. This is dance music at its BEST! The liner notes give a brief bio on each fiddler (there are about 15, only one of which I recognize, Natalie McMaster). It describes some family background about musical origins and connections, describes the musician's rise to recognition in the Cape Breton community, some have come national attention and others to international, as well. It really makes you feel proud of their achievements, as if *you* were a friend & neighbor, wishing them success on their rise to fame and fortune! Word descriptions of this music: hypnotic, mesmerizing tunes, musical frenzy, spiralling ecstasy, rousing, passionate and magical playing (some of the violins have been passed down from generation to generation)!!! If you love the violin when it is called a "fiddle", this CD is for you! Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Good introduction to Cape Breton music.......2000-07-05
Cape Breton must be in the lead for the "musical talent per capita" award, as this album amply illustrates. It's a good introduction to the wide range of styles found under the general heading of Cape Breton traditional music, from the traditional stylings of Buddy MacMaster to the contemporary energy of Slainte Mhaith. In between are the amazingly versatile Barra MacNeils (this album features an instrumental, but they are equally strong on vocals), the incredibly talented J.P. Cormier (equally virtuostic on fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, piano, and bass and a great singer and songwriter to boot), and the unique piano stylings of Tracy Dares. As with all samplers, not every cut is equally strong - Stephanie Wills' intonation is painfully bad and Graham and MacDonald's isn't much better. You'll want to buy a number of the albums sampled here, but will be frustrated by their unavailability (unless you're lucky enough to be Canadian).

Traditional Cape Breton music.......2003-11-29
This compilation of Joe MacLean's work belongs in the collection of everyone who loves Cape Breton (or other celtic) music. Collected from 78s, most with Lila Hashem on piano, they are a window into the playing style of a past generation. SOme of the recordings are somewhat scratchy but the rhythmic drive and melodic interpretation are well worth it.

Third Time Is A Charm.......2003-12-11
This is the third disc in the Christmas series REJOICE: A STRING QUARTET CHRISTMAS and it basically follows the same formula. Christmas carols are arranged for a string quartet. Listeners may wonder if a third collection is too much of a good thing. While this collection is similar to the first two string quartet collections, it is also significantly different. On this disc listeners enjoy some carols some carols, but it also has some strictly classical tracks. People who love classical music and enjoyed the first collection will certainly enjoy this disc as well as well.
Bravo!!.......2002-09-04
The third CD of the Rejoice series continues this profound exploration of the unfamiliar songs of Christmas. Sound and performance rate 5 Stars with me. What I like most about this series is being able to listen to them at any time during the year. They do not get put away with the ornaments and lights. They stay out in the rotation. I'm waiting for the next installment in this line of superb music, artistry and sound.
Worth it for the last track alone..........2001-12-03
If you have ever been fortunate enough to attend the annual Candlelight Carol Festival at New York's Riverside Church, then you're no doubt familiar with the hauntingly beautiful piece that closes the service each year "Sleep of the Infant Jesus" by Henri Busser. It's performed in arrangement for viola, harp, and organ and it is truly inspired.
In searching for a recording of this piece, I came across this CD here on Amazon and purchased it. Little did I know that not only was I getting the music I wanted, but it is in fact a recording of the very same arrangement, by the same musicians -- and it was recorded at Riverside Church! This track alone (the last on the disc) is worth the price of the CD. But you'll also be treated to several other gems. This is a fine quartet and their performances are uniformly excellent.
There are some familiar -- and some not so familiar -- carols here, but it doesn't have to be "Jingle Bells" to evoke a holiday spirit. One curious piece entitled "March of the Three Kings" sounds to me like the beginning of Bizet's "L'Arlsienne Suite No. 1", but I'm not complaining.
If you're looking for something a little different to put on during holiday get-togethers, this CD is a great choice. And if you've been to the Carol Festival at Riverside Church, it's a no-brainer.
A Wonderful Christmas Recording.......2000-12-16
The third disc in the very enjoyable Rejoice series features beautiful seasonal works, some less known than others, but more than a few will be recognized by serious music lovers. The quartet's musicianship is exemplary, and the sonics, as one expects from this label, are wonderful. If you like musical, highly polished string playing, this fine disc has many treaures and new discoveries awaiting your pleasure. Highly recommended - perhaps the perfect gift for the classical music lover who has everything.
pretty music, not particularly festive.......1998-11-18
This is beautifully done, but many songs are not familiar. This does not sound especially Christmasy.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Scottish fiddle music.......2006-12-10
This is one of the best records of Cape Breton fiddle music, one of the truly great fiddling traditions of the world. Theresa Morrison has been playing the violin for well over half a century. Her brother Joe McLean will be well known to lovers of this music, but Ms. Morrison has not recorded before--unfortunately. Her music has not accommodated to the up-tempo, flashy style of the post-"folk revival" decades. She plays simple, rather slow tunes, with exquisite note-shaping and dynamics and bow work that sounds like a foretaste of Heaven (my idea of Heaven, anyway). The full, aching, sometimes almost unbearable beauty of Cape Breton music comes through here. If you want to see strong men weep, play this record. It must make the rocks of the Nova Scotia headlands break into tears.
