The two-CD Steppin' Out trawls the recorded career of an ambitious artist whose work has ranged from reggae-inflected new wave to classical crossover. Cosmopolitan even at his most punky, former Royal Academy of Music student Joe Jackson found his greatest success with Night and Day, a blend of pop and Latin flavors that produced highly memorable tracks such as this retrospective's title song, "Another World," and "Breaking Us in Two." That very sophistication, however, has often proven the downfall of some Jackson discs and ultimately blurred his musical identity beyond the focus that, say, Elvis Costello has maintained through many stylistic shifts. Even powerful early music--such as several cuts from 1980's dub-wise Beat Crazy--is marred by sledgehammer irony, while excerpts from later albums are anything from tastefully bland to downright irritating. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
All Joe All the Time.......2007-04-12
This is the definitive Joe Jackson cd. It's all his performance songs and hits rolled into a great double cd set. Every time I think to see if I would skip the next song I change my mind, it's like I just ran into an old best friend and I spend the night sit, drink coffee and talk all night.
Amazing!.......2006-11-08
Joe Jackson is really underrated artist. Very mid-english timeless feeling (pubs, clubs, broken hearts, endless struggle for better life, football hooligans and finally - everything around us full of beauty).
The songs touched by a lot of eclecticism and sometimes remind you The Police, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Billy Joel and Elvis Costello.
Musthave item for all music fans.
He's the man.......2006-08-26
This is a 2 CD retrospective on Joe Jackson 1979-2000 studio works (no live cuts). Rightfully so, it focuses on his more popular early work while just sampling his later more experimental works.
His earlier rock LPs were great cut for cut and the many cuts featured from these LPs bear this out. There's a few rarities included here for the serious fans and the later cuts will give a flavor of those efforts while not getting into great depth. In his varied career, Jackson has had many highlights and this set does as good a job as possible of featuring his best.
Steppin' Out / Very Best of Joe Jackson.......2006-08-24
Great CD, I had never owned any of His work before, I had only heard the radio hits. Very strong songs with good lyric and great groove..
Fantastic collection.......2005-08-29
Joe Jackson can be something of an acquired taste, but apart from his regrettable experiment in big band (Cab Calloway retired 'Jumpin Jive'; no-one else should attempt it), this is a fantastic collection. The 'Stepping Out' stuff aside, I really enjoyed reliving the frenetic energy of the new wave stuff with 'Got the Time', 'I'm the Man', and other songs of that type. This is an extremely solid collection.

Amazing oportunity to understand the great voice and music arrangements of Tony: MUST BE IN YOUR COLLECTION !.......2007-05-30
I bought this CD thanks to the sale offer Amazong inform me. It was a hard to fine CD from long years ago. Now I believe I was purchased one of the best record of the year !. The hits compilation is the best sample of who Tony had not all the press and major press attention. Tony was as JJ Cale, great and personal music ocult below the Billboard hits.
However, unfortunately the CD had not include Tony other hits made him a great singer and musician.
Buy it now..good price for a collection CD!
A REALLY GREAT ALBUM BY A MASTER!!!.......2007-05-08
From the moment I first heard "Polk Salad Annie", back in the late '60s, I became a Tony Joe White fan. It was really refreshing to hear a fellow Southerner playing a style of music that was unique to my part of the world. Tony had real "Soul" without trying to be a Black wannabe. There were always elements of Country and Funk in his style but he combined them in an original way that others would only weakly imitate later. Sadly, after a couple of hits, he seemed to disappear and, frankly, I even forgot what his name was. Then, a few weeks ago someone mentioned him as an influence and it was like "Oh yeah: I remember him. He was cool!" So, I ordered this album and my Yankee wife and I listened to it for the first time in my truck while we were making the weekly run into town to buy groceries and other supplies. My wife is too young to remember "Polk Salad Annie" but the minute it came on, man, her head was bobbing and she got a big grin on her face...and she kept grinning and bobbing through the whole album! I had never heard most of the tunes in this collection but I wasn't disappointed by a single one! What's amazing about Mr. White is that, while he writes, sings, plays the the guitar and harmonica adequately, he is not a virtuoso on any of them. Yet, when you take the sum total of one of his performances, he is really, really great!
I guess the big surprise for me was "Ol' Mother Earth"! Who would have thought that an ol' Southern Boy would have written such a sensitive pro-environment tune. I must admit that it made my throat thicken up a little. Another extra good one was "Willy And Laura May Jones": social commentary at its finest!
This is a great introductory album for those who are unfamiliar with Tony Joe's work...and just as great for those of us who are.
I'm so happy to see that he's still around and still recording. I have already ordered more of his albums.
I just hope that he tours in North Central Florida!
Swamp Fox.......2007-01-15
I used to only have this music collection on cassette tape, and searced for some time to replace the worn out version with a crisp sounding CD. This is one of my favorite collections of Tony's. I love the bluesy guitar and soft smoldering Southern style of Polk Salad Annie & Rainy Night in Georgia. I was in high school when he hit the charts in July of '69 and "Polk Salad" was one of my favorite hits. To this day whenever it comes on the radio or I pop the cd into my player, it brings back so many fun memories of us all singing and humming to the tune, I will never forget! So pop it in and sing along you will never forget what you were doing the first time you ever heard this Southern-gumbo Style singer either!
Absolutely great!!.......2006-06-26
Until I heard Tony Joe White on a blues channel, I never knew he existed. I immediately ordered a CD and have almost worn it out. He is amazing..
Good but not his best.......2000-08-22
This is a CD that should be in most people's collection. If you can't have all of the earlier albums then this is a good sample. However as with any Greatest Hits CD's this one has some good stuff on it and some okay stuff on it. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it is missing some of the songs that more define TJW than some of these. Songs like "For Le Anne" or "The Father" or his great version of Dylan's "Copper Kettle". I was surprised that the title track, and one of his few instrumentals, "Home Made Ice Cream" did not make the cut. That song is not only short but as TJW as you can get.
If you like his older material, especially the quieter songs, then check out his last 3-4 CD's which find him in a more mellow form.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Album Description
With a booming voice that shook up the blues scene and inspired the birth of rock 'n' roll, Big Joe Turner cut many of his greatest sides for Atlantic, the very best of which are lovingly collected here. This fine single-disc compilation collects 16 of Big Joe's biggest R&B singles and album tracks for Atlantic, spanning 1951-1959. Big Joe looms large in musical history, and this Best Of CD is evidence of why he came to be called the Boss of the Blues!
Customer Reviews:
Big Joe Turner best hits.......2006-11-10
This CD is in the top 5 of the hundreda that I own.
Big, Big Joe.......2006-01-31
Big Joe Turner for me, is more than just a "blues shouter". Granted, he had been shouting the blues since the late 1930's, about 12-14 years before he recoreded the material heard here. But after a listening of his records it becomes clear that the period chronicalled here (1951-1959) is by far his most essential.
By the late forties, as the liner notes (by Billy Vera) of this superb Rhino collection say, Joe was losing his audience. As the fifties began Joe found himself (in the same boat as Sinatra I might add) moving to a new label, and evolving musically. The first single released from Joe's sessions at the Soul House, Atlantic Records (home to Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, The Drifters and later Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Solomon Burke etc) was Chains Of Love. Chains Of Love (and Sweet Sixteen) being slow, moody, blues masterpieces give this album a brooding opening.
Then however, the mood changes slightly. Honey Hush begins a string of jump blues hits that are often refered to as "proto-rock and roll...an apt term: all tracks through to number 11 were recorded before Elvis's 'Heartbreak Hotel', and really do pepper the early years of the 1950's with the birth of rock 'n' roll. Big Joe's 'Shake, Rattle & Roll' is a fine example. This new style Joe developed throughout the rest of the '50's with the stunning dancefloor hits heard here.
Overall, Joe is an overlooked originator, someone who along with Ray Charles (Mess Around, It Should've Been Me, I Got A Woman etc) started the R&B side of rock 'n' roll, leaving of course, the country side to Elvis Presley, Bill Haley and so on. Joe's music is some of the best made in the golden '50's. A must have for any nostalgia lover, or any lover rock 'n' roll. Joe was rock 'n' rolls first star, and the more people that know it, hear it, love it...the better.
Big Joe Turner, the premier shouter of early rock & roll.......2005-01-09
Big Joe Turner was the premier blues shouter of the postwar era and did everything from boogie-woogie and jump blues to the first wave of rock & roll. Even those who have never heard Turner sing have heard "Shake, Rattle & Roll," which was specifically written for him by Charles Calhoun (Jesse Stone), but you probably heard the sanitized version that was popularized by Bill Haley and the Comets. On "The Very Best of Big Joe Turner" you get to hear the original version, with its big bounce and raunchy lyrics. You will also learn why you should associate the name Big Joe Turner with the idea of screaming rock & roll songs.
With this issue from Rhino Records, part of their series of reissuing classic blues and R&B material from the vaults at Atlantic Records. What Rhino did was take a dozen tracks from Atlantic's "Big Joe Turner's Greatest Hits" and add another four tracks, "TV Mama" and "Midnight Cannonball," both of which were written by Turner, and "You're Driving Me Crazy (What Did I Do?)" and "Tomorrow Night." The common denominator on those tracks is that they are more rock & roll than R&B, which is just fine with me. The choice tracks are the rocker "Honey Hush," the aforementioned original version of "Shake, Rattle & Roll," "Flip, Flop and Fly" (which supposedly has leftover verses from "Shake, Rattle & Roll"), "The Chicken and the Hawk (Up, Up and Away)" and "Corrine Corrina," which has been done by everybody from Red Nichols to Dean Martin. But then you will discover that the more you know about the early days of rock & roll the more you will realize you have heard covers of some of these songs by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley.
Also, because this is Rhino, we are once again talking excellent liner notes, compiled this time around by Billy Vera. The only complaint is that the cover picture of Big Joe Turner is actually the smallest picture of the singer I have seen to date. Irony abounds. The only reason not to give this album five stars is because there are Big Joe Turner collections that have more than 16 tracks on them, but I really like the selection here because my primary interest is in rockabilly and the early days of rock & roll more than the blues and R&B you get with some of the other collections, which are five star albums in their own rights. Most of these songs were produced by Atlantic's Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler, which explains why there is a definitive sound here. If you check out the 1956 film "Shake, Rattle & Rock" you can catch Turner lip-synching a couple of his hits, along with Fats Domino and the music of Frédéric Chopin.
Jump blues legend, a cut or two above the greats.......2004-06-26
Big Joe Tuner was as hep as heck! This dude was singing back in the early 40's when the bozos he was competing with on the rock charts in the late 50's were born! Turner is a cut above(or 10 cuts above) the rock competitors, who were influenced by him anyway(most of them listened to Turner on the radio as kids). Turner was mature and knowing in his songs and rocks hard on tunes like Flip, Flop & Fly, and gives Haley a run for his money of Shake, Rattle & Roll. A blues shouther heavily influenced by r&b, who pioneered rock'n'roll. These are Turner's hits and best songs from the 50's like TV Mama and The Chicken & The Hawk. Every cut a gem and full of energy and pep. Turner was timeless, and I'm sure very happy to be so popular this late in his career, or should I say his second career as a rock'n'roller. A great cd of GREAT jump blues.
Fine introduction if a little skimpy.......2004-04-10
For years, Atlantic had a great CD simply called "Greatest Hits," now OOP but easy to find (and still listed on Amazon.com). Rhino has replaced that CD with this one, "The Very Best of Big Joe Turner." Here are the differences:
1. "Oke-She-Monke-She-Pop" on this CD is the original single/45 version, the first time it's ever been used for a CD. "Greatest Hits" uses an earlier, slower version (and makes the mistake of listing the session date and credits of the single/45 version).
2. "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" has an extra 20 seconds at the end (it basically fades out 20 seconds later than the version on the "Greatest Hits" CD). I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be, but it's a good thing to have.
3. A complete set of liner notes by Billy Vera. Well-written and informative, the "Greatest Hits" CD had none. Furthermore, songwriting credits have been corrected - real names replace pseudonyms and songs originally credited to Big Joe Turner's wife are now credited to him (he is the actual writer, but for various reasons gave credit to his wife).
4. "Honey Hush" is slower and has a lower pitch (not-quite-half-a-semitone lower) than the "Greatest Hits" CD. This may or may not be correct.
5. Though 9 great tracks from the "Greatest Hits" CD do not appear here in any form or version, you do get 4 very good tracks that don't appear on the "Greatest Hits" CD. Still, that only leaves 16 on this disc with over a half-an-hour to spare. They could have easily squeezed 25 to 28 classic tracks on one CD.
6. There's less tape hiss than the "Greatest Hits" CD possibly from better source tapes, but like many Atlantic R&B CD's mastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot, the sound is even brighter and harder from a treble and upper midrange boost. These recordings were pretty bright to begin with, and now they sound really harsh. The sound is also more bottom heavy and a lot louder than the "Greatest Hits" CD.
So not a bad introduction. If you're not a fan of Joe Turner or early r&b in general but want at least a little Joe Turner to round out your collection, this isn't a bad buy. Still, if you can find the old "Greatest Hits" CD, I'd pick that. It's not perfect, but in the long run, it will be more satisfying.

I must be going insane! I' m actually enjoying budget-priced compilations! "WHAT? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND, CAPTAIN???".......2006-03-24
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this eleven-track Milliennium Collection is actually somewhat worth it! Granted, some Millennium Collections are very bad ideas (listen to those by the Who and B.B. King, for instance--better yet, don't). But somehow, this one works. I don't know, maybe the presence of With a Little Help From My Friends (Cocker's best song) has clouded my visions, but this is actually somewhat GOOD!!! Granted, I would've loved to have heard the versions of Bathroom WIndow and Delta Lady from Mad Dogs and Englishmen, as well as a couple other selections from that LP (namely LEt's Go Get Stoned) but I already own Mad Dogs in the first place, so why am I complaining? Especially when it's got Cry Me A River and the Letter from that concert? Not to mention the flat-out rocker High Time We Went and Traffic classic Feelin' Alright.
Sadly, there are a couple tunes that don't work. You Are So Beautiful is the most overproduced thing Joe pulled off...possibly ever. His vocals are a big plus, though, And Up Where We Belong never really did much for me. But this collection isn't half bad!
Good songs, but not enough of them........2002-10-03
The obvious negative is that this CD has only 11 songs of fairly standard length, which is an especially lousy practice for a greatest hits album. They could have and should have added at least 1-2 more, like maybe "Let's Go Get Stoned." On the positive side, it had every song I wanted by Joe Cocker, including his lesser known hits from around 1970, like the radio versions of "The Letter," "Delta Lady," and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window."
Great Collection - wrapped up weakly.......2002-09-04
Although I have a couple Joe Cocker albums, and I love 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen,' I still regard myself a newbie. This album is a great start, and 'The Letter' makes up for any shortcomings. I can't believe that song doesn't get the airtime it deserves. However, but the last couple tracks are pretty cringe-worthy compared to the soul of the first six, mainly because of the limp accompaniments.
All the Casual Joe Cocker Fan Will Need.......2002-07-17
This is the best single-disc Joe Cocker anthology available. All of his best tracks from the '60s and '70s are included.
The only reason it doesn't deserve 5 stars is that the lesser-known "Jealous Kind" and "Many Rivers to Cross" are entirely unnecessary and should have been replaced with a couple of Cocker's '80s classics like "Night Calls" or "You Can Leave Your Hat On."
Fun!.......2002-04-16
Somehow there's nothing like cranking up "Feeling Alright" to take the stress out of the day. I keep it in my office!

Known for his crazy man gyrations, sandpaper and gravel voice, and a destructive alcoholism that imbued his songs with a desperate edge, Joe Cocker set forth with a British blues sound nearly impossible to beat. This collection features his later work. The demons controlled, he's transformed himself into an adult-contemporary singer who can deliver the pathos on cue. The simple elegance of his duet with Jennifer Warnes, "Up Where We Belong," catapulted him back into the spotlight and his work since has been a graceful bow to that accomplishment. He's restrained these days but he still delivers that sad, lonely tune as only someone who's been there can. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Mostly unremarkable.......2005-08-26
When Cocker has the right song (meaning a nice raw rocker), he turns out intense, emotional music. When he has slick 80s radio pop backing, the results are usually less involving.
HIGHLIGHTS:
His 90s smash "When the Night Comes" is truly great, combining a nice slowly building melody, some gospelly overtones, and a nicely restrained vocal that belts when it needs to. Outside of that one, his duet with Jennifer Warnes on "Up Where We Belong" continues to sound good. (Who on earth ever envisioned THAT pairing?!?! And how do we thank them?) An updated live version of Beatles cover "With a Little Help from my Friends" is an electric epic, going from strength to strength.
LOWS:
Cocker is NOT Jeff Lynne...not even if you back him with a Lynne produced track like "Night Calls". I'll stick with Tom Jones' version for the definitive "You Can Leave Your Hat On" (likewise Ray Charles' take on "Unchain my Heart").
BOTTOM LINE:
Most of Cocker's best stuff is late 60s, early 70s material like "Feelin' Alright" and "You are So Beautiful". You can get those and the best bits of this one on Hip-O Records ULTIMATE COLLECTION (ASIN B00016MSXU). Get that one instead.
Where Is "Love Is Alive?".......2003-11-27
I agree this is not up to par with Joe's best stuff from the 60s and early 70s, but given that, they even left off his best song from this period, "Love Is Alive." That song really ROCKS and it is not here. Shame.
Mixed Bag Anthology.......2003-03-03
"The Best of Joe Cocker" contains the highlights of his career from after the period covered by his "Greatest Hits" album, so it must be noted that the version of "With a Little Help from My Friends" is newer and not the "classic" version. Cocker's later career was not nearly as interesting as his late 60s and early 70s peak. A song like the syrupy duet ballad "Up Where We Belong" may have been a massive hit, but it has little in common with the raw power of his best work. The album's best moments come early. The first three songs, "Unchain My Heart," "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and "When the Night Comes," may be a bit heavy on the bombast, but they are quite tuneful and Cocker's never been in better voice. After that the songs are less memorable, with few standouts.
Overall, an up-and-down anthology from the latter part of Joe Cocker's great career.
Buyer Beware!.......2002-09-20
Having been a Joe Cocker fan in the late 60s and the 70s, I recently realized that I had no Joe on CD (only on vinyl). After picking up his greatest album ever ("Joe Cocker!") on CD, I ordered "The Best of Joe Cocker" to bring me up to speed. One of the main reasons for getting this CD was that it contained the LIVE VERSION of "Help from My Friends." However, after receiving the CD and listening to the first few notes of "My Friends," I realized that this was NOT the live version we all know and love. The classic live version of this song done at Woodstock (as well as the studio version on his 1st LP) makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck (the way the lead to "Stairway to Heaven" always does). This version is OK, but BUYER BEWARE - it is WAY less powerful than the Woodstock version. The rest of the album is OK, but all these songs are so overproduced compared those songs exhibiting the raw energy that his earlier work had. This was a disappointing buy.
Know What You're Buying!.......2002-07-17
This album isn't really the best of Joe Cocker - it's the best of slick, adult contemporary, 1980s Joe Cocker. That said, it's not without some great songs ("You Can Leave Your Hat On," "Night Calls"). But if you want classic Joe Cocker, try the "Greatest Hits," "A&M Classics," or "20th Century Masters."

Bad Boy review.......2005-09-27
I am such a freestyle freak! Growing up in NYC, it was just what you listened to. The music just brings you back to the club scene from the late 80's & early 90's. I loved the song selection on the CD, BUT>> the transition in between songs was a bit overwelming. That would be the only reason why I wouldn't put it on at a party. The songs in itself are so much fun and exciting to listen to. There is no need for all the remixing & scratching before each song, because it takes away from the CD and the music which is what it's all about. Thats my only down note about it because the CD is great!!! I have the entire collection. The music took me back to when I was a teenager hanging out at the clubs in NYC & (the boogie down Bronx) with my friends. I think it's so cool that my kids know now what Mommy's music sounds like from the 80's!Thank you :)
THIS CD IS A MUST.......2004-07-15

This CD is great! It's not filled with the same songs that are on every Freestyle CD. You'll know & love every song - I dare you to not dance & sing like crazy to this one! Bad Boy Joe is obviously the best freestyle dj around.
Bright Boy Joe.......2003-06-26
A good compilation of classic freestyle songs from the "do you remeber the late 80's and early 90's" time period as the announcer puts it on the first track. Bad Boy Joe does an excellent job mixing the songs to flow together from one track to the next and picks the key parts of every song to actually replay as beats. All the songs are common and can be heard on ktu or any station playing freestyle. My only complaint is that I wouldn't consider these the 2nd best set of songs ever in freestyle. The songs are good, but some I think could have been saved for later volumes, but that is an issue in preference I guess. I would def recommend this for any serious freestlye fan b/c it puts good songs all in one place that are just keep flowing when played.

Wow!!! What a choice of songs by Bad Boy Joe. I like every song on the cd and the mixing is great. If you are a freestyle fan this the cd to buy!!!!!
Bad Boy Joe ruined every song.......2006-06-01
Don't buy this CD with the intent of getting the original songs.... the DJ chose to perform some of his own "freestyle" scratching inside every song.... you're not getting what you remember from the radio when this material was new. Pass on this CD with a quickness!
GOOD START...........2005-05-27
This CD definitely has a lot of good freestyle songs. However, a lot of these songs should not be on volume 1. They were decent hits but not some of the super hits you expect on a first volume compilation like this. The mixing is excellent and everything flows like you would expect from Bad Boy Joe. Being 4 other voulmes are out it doesn't pay for me to say the other songs I would have rather heard on here, but if you are only buying this cd because it is the first volume then that would be a mistake, you need at least volumes 2 and three to get A LOT of hits.
Great CD.......2003-12-21

He's never had a Top 10 single, none of his albums have gone platinum, and yet Joe Ely has carved a unique--and influential--niche for himself during nearly 25 years as a solo performer, most of them spent on MCA. His incomparable stories overflow with humanity and humor, not to mention an idiosyncratic West Texas perspective. He was "alt country" before the genre existed and can be justly credited as a fountainhead of that movement. This generously programmed set may not matter to hardcore Elyphiles who have everything he recorded. To the newcomer, however, these 20 songs--dating back to his first MCA album (Joe Ely, 1977) and ending with his last (Twistin' in the Wind, 1998)--are a compelling introduction, the music reflecting Texas's rich musical stew. Numbers like "She Never Spoke Spanish to Me" and "Me and Billy the Kid" wear well, and the inclusion of material from his two stunning live albums for MCA (Live Shots, 1980, and Live at Liberty Lunch, 1990) conveys his onstage presence. One may always quibble with selections on best-ofs, but short of a box set, this is an effective first look at his enduring vision. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
The Best of Joe Ely.......2007-05-10
An excellent CD. It really is some of the best of Joe Ely.
Legend.......2006-11-02
Joe Ely has truly become a full blown music legend - and not just in West Texas, but all over. His unique sound, with Texas influence, will only leave you wanting to hear more and more, again and again.
No matter if he is singing with the Flatlanders, Butch Hancock, or by himself, Ely will never fail to create a music masterpiece - and this album is proof of that. I own enough "Greatest Hits" albums to know that the not all the songs are truly "Great."
However, that is simply not the case here with Joe Ely. While some will have their favorites, all will listen to every song on the CD and never had the desire to skip any song. If you are new to Joe Ely or a long time fan, this is a must own CD for you.
dazzling.......2003-11-06
Texas' Joe Ely has pumped out 14 albums of material since he made his debut in 1977. But as this latent collection of his greatest illustrates, his best stuff was recorded early on with chief songsmith Butch Hancock on board. Songs plucked from the first four albums dazzle with crackerjack playing, muscular vocals and a goldmine of material (Suckin' a Big Bottle of Gin, Tennessee's Not the State I'm In, West Texas Waltz, Standing at the Big Hotel) straight from Hancock's pen. Even Ely, unpressured, was able to dash off the sporadic gem (Honky Tonk Masquerade, Fingernails). But only the deaf will miss the stylistic decline which set in after Hancock bolted in 1981. Forced to rely on his own material, Ely's focused changed and the spark in the studio all but disappeared. Only a rousing live version of Hancock's If You Were a Bluebird, recorded in 1990, makes the case for any late-career relevancy and only then because Ely's true value is the work he does on stage.
An Excellent Joe Ely Primer.......2001-02-06
This is the first domestically released Joe Ely anthology, and the only one to cover everything from his 1977 self-titled debut through 1998's Twistin' In the Wind. If you're unfamiliar with this Texas country-rocker, this is an excellent place to start.
In 1972 Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore recorded their only album together as the Flatlanders and the album went nowhere. But over the next three decades each artist has garnered critical praise as a solo performer, though none has achieved more than cult status with the record buying public. Between the three of them, they wrote all but "Long Snake Moan" taken from Live Shots recorded while Ely was the opening act for the Clash. Though they don't perform with Ely on record, Hancock wrote eight of these songs, including "She Never Spoke Spanish To Me," "Suckin' a Big Bottle of Gin" and the wonderful "West Texas Waltz," and Gilmore wrote "Dallas" and co-wrote "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown."
Ely is also an excellent songwriter as well, penning "Fingernails" (the greatest song Jerry Lee Lewis never wrote!), "Me and Billy the Kid" and "All Just To Get to You." Ely's first two albums (represented by the first seven tracks) are an exciting blend of country, rock, honky-tonk and Tex-Mex. Steel guitar player Lloyd Maines provides much of the band's muscle along with Ponty Bone on accordian on the second album. By the release of his 1981 album, Ely was more rock than country and Live Shots which came out the same year is an amazing live album. Ely didn't release another album until 1984's Hi-Res, where he virtually abandoned any connection to country music. "Cool Rockin' Loretta" is the only thing worth having from that album.
After another recording hiatus, Ely returned in the late Eighties with two albums on the Hightone label. This period is represented by "Settle for Love" and "Me and Billy the Kid." Ely's two most recent albums--Letter To Loredo and Twistin' In the Wind--find him adding flamenco to the mix (and the return of Lloyd Maines to the band). The only surprise is that there is nothing included from 1992's Love and Danger.--"The Road Goes on Forever" would have been an obvious choice.
Being limited to a single disc anthology, this collection draws from nine of his ten studio albums, and two of his three live albums and provides the listener with an excellenet overview of an underrated artist. When you decide you need more, BGO has recently released his first two classic albums as a two-fer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
First US Compilation.......2000-11-30
This is Joe Ely's first compilation in the US. It covers all his MCA albums as well as one song from a 1987 HighTone release. Ely's unique style of Country, Rock, Blues and Tex-Mex lends his songs a unique flavor. A great songwriter he also is smart enough to use the talents of equally fine songwriters like Butch Hancock "Tennessee's Not The State", and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, "Dallas", on his albums. Hancock, Gilmore and Ely were members of the legendary Flatlanders, who made one classic album in 1972 (in print called "More A Legend Than A Band" on Rounder Records). At 20 songs and 78 minutes this is a great introduction to anyone who has a passing interest in Ely's music. But it also will serve the Ely fan. No, there are no new songs or unreleased tracks here, but it does a fine job of wrapping up Ely's 23 years of solo work. One could always quibble: I miss "Jericho" from 1978's Honky Tonk Masquerade and either one of his 2 Robert Earl Keen covers from 1992's Love and Danger: "Road Goes on Forever" or "Whenever Kindness Fails", but those are minor omissions. And besides those songs are on Ely's 3 best studio albums, which are all in print: Joe Ely (77), Honky Tonk Masquerade (78) and Love and Danger (92). Those 3 albums plus this compilation filling in the gaps are essential in starting your Ely solo collection. With fine up-to-the-minute liner notes by John Morthland and good, clear sound, this turns out to be one of 2000's best reissues.
