Based upon their past credits, one anticipates a segmented division of labor from the three principals in Hamilton Pool. The Voice would be Fairport Convention founder Iain Mathews. The Technician would be multi-instrumentalist Mark Hellman, who's produced albums for Mathews, Carole King, and Sara Hickman, among others. And the Writer would be Michael Francasso, whose When I Lived in the Wild established his name among upstart Americana singer-songwriters. But any notions that Return to Zero is an assembly line collaboration are quickly dashed; these guys built this chassis using the Japanese team method. Lead vocal duties are shared just about equally, and while Francasso brings fewer songs to the mix than his two, he assumes frontman duties on two noteworthy covers--the Rolling Stones' "Back Street Girl" and Bob Neuwrith's majestically bleak "Eye on the Road." --Steven Stolder

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

4 out of 5 stars This Group Rocks.......2003-02-20

I heard about this band a couple years ago and went everywhere to find the cds. I found the 1991 release of "Return to Zero" and "Lost". Both are amazing, ecspecially "Return to Zero". I know Boston just came out with a new cd, "Corporate America"... but I feel that RTZ should reunite and continue writing, everyone deserves to hear the talent on these CD's. If you're into the sounds of Boston you'll dig Return to Zero.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta LOVE any continuation of that BOSTON sound!!.......2001-11-30

This is a FANTASTIC 'lost'2nd c.d. by a great band!!Hearing the soaring (and very melodious) guitar solos on each of these tunes makes you wonder if Mr. Tom Scholz even PLAYS any lead guitar on those first two Boston l.p.'s!!In case you're wondering-BARRY GOUDREAU is the guitarist of RTZ-and does he SMOKE!!Not to mention the incredibly smooooth lead vocals(as usual)of BRAD DELP-also of Boston fame. This one REALLY grows on you!Nobody writes great edgy pop/rock like this any more.GET THIS-you'll dig it!!And while yer at it-try to find the debut c.d. as well!!

4 out of 5 stars A BIG BRADLEY DELP FAN 2-7-2000.......2000-02-08

I'VE ONLY HEARD THIS ONCE. BUT I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BIG FAN OF BRADLEY DELP, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE WAS WITH BOSTON. THIS IS NOT SOME OF HIS BEST MUSIC. BUT IF YOU WOULD GO BACK TO HIS 1991 DEBUT ALBUM, THEN YOU'LL SEE HIS BEST IN ACTION. BUT THIS IS A GOOD ALBUM. PICK IT UP! I WOULD OF GIVEN HIM A 5 STARS BUT ITS JUST NOT THERE.

      Album Description

The Long Beach, CA quartet's Kapow Records debut album Return to Zero has a ghostly warmth that seems impossibly compelling. The Alleged Gunmen's chiming and chanting reverb-drenched sound echoes the hybrid roots of The Clash's Sandinista. There are traces of western Americana, early rock'n'roll, dub, postpunk, R&B and country scattered throughout the 14-song album. Return to Zero provides the perfect soundtrack for starting anew in the aftermath. Standard Jewel Case.

5 out of 5 stars Rubber Soul of the Nineties.......2004-04-06

This album is simply breathtaking: soulful and heartfelt renditions of original and other songmaterial combined with superb singing and playing performance as well as brilliant production. Even Jagger/Richards' "Back Street Girl" comes to new life, the adding of a dobro works beautiful here. Each song is a jewel in its own right, the whole album being more than the sum of its parts. Call it a song cycle, if you will, I'd call it the "Rubber Soul of the Nineties". Too bad that group has been so short lived.

      5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Jewel.......2003-06-05

With all the artists generating attention from Austin, I'm still surprised that more hasn't been made of Hamilton Pool. This is one of the finest works ever to come out of that area. Hamilton Pool's engaging folk-rock is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, but in its own inimitable style. This album could've easily generated five big hits had the marketing stars been aligned. Everyone I've played this album for loves it. This is a real hidden jewel.

4 out of 5 stars A great melding of styles with exceptional talent.......1998-08-25

I found this album of music to be exceptional. The talent and melding of styles were very well represented. I'd like to hear more from this group.

if you are into melodic rock sang by a great vocalist, you'll enjoy "face the Music","Rain down on Me", "Hard Time in The Big House", and the hit ballad " Until your Love Comes Back Around". great stuff by the late Brad Delp. He will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding album from an under-appreciated band.......2007-06-19

I'm a long-time Boston fan but I only discovered RTZ recently, even though I heard about the band when Boston's "Walk On" came out and learned that Brad Delp wasn't performing the vocals on that CD because of his commitment to RTZ.

I've purchased all the RTZ albums and enjoy them all. This album is packed with outstanding songs. Delp sings passionately with his uniquely beautiful sound and also demonstrates his capacity to sing in a variety of styles. Goudreau is outstanding on lead guitar as well.

One aspect of RTZ that I really enjoy vis-a-vis Boston is that many of RTZ's tracks are much more personally expressive and emotive. This is true of all the RTZ albums, including "Delp and Goudreau", not just Return to Zero.

Face the Music, All You've Got and Rain Down on Me are beautiful but rock at the same time. Every Door is Open and Until Your Love Comes Back Around are outstanding ballads. Devil to Pay and Livin' for the Rock 'N' Roll are much more bluesy and truly demonstrate Delp's master of multiple vocal styles and Goudreau's outstanding depth as a guitarist.

4 out of 5 stars Goudreau scores at last with a solid rock recording.......2007-05-07

Another project from Barry Goudreau, the eponymous Return to Zero is easily the best recording from any Boston alumni. Nothing in the music is even slightly innovative, but most of the songs are reliably crafted, feature strong performances, and are backed up with solid production (a sore point on Orion the Hunter and Barry Goudreau). On hand for RTZ was Boston vocalist Brad Delp, as well as keyboardist Brain Maes, formerly a touring member of Orion the Hunter, graduate of the Berklee College School of Music, and composer of RTZ's most popular song, "When Your Love Comes Back Around," an infectious ballad that could fit quite comfortably on any Journey album and that peaked at #16 on the Billboard US Hit chart. Together with Goudreau, Maes also cowrote the album's first single, Face the Music. The album features another nine songs, seven cowritten by Goudreau and Delp. RTZ toured the US in 1991 and 1992 playing versions of Boston's "Long Time" and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" and appeared on ABC television's live music program, "In Concert." Serious fans of Boston or RTZ might like to have a look around the internet; bootlegs for a few of RTZ's `91-`92 shows are in circulation.

During the band's recording sessions for the first album there was enough material left over for a second album, which Goudreau hoped to release following the `91-`92 tour. But when label Giant Records lost interest, the band lost its contract and quickly folded. After such a solid debut, the band's unreavling must have been a great disappointment to Goudreau and Delp, who for so long struggled under the shadow of Scholz. Goudreau shopped around for a label to market and distribute the second album, titled Lost, but by the time the material was released in 1998 all the band members had moved on to other projects.

Buy this album not for the Boston connection, but because it's well crafted, middle of the road melodic rock.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Purchase For Boston Fans !.......2007-03-18

The late Brad Delp and RTZ bandmates totally excelled on every song of "Return To Zero". Delp's vocals resonate perfectly on many songs including "There's ANother Side", "All You've Got" "Everydoor Is Open" and "Until Your Love Comes Back Around". Delp's paramount vocal performance is on the poignant song "Rain Down On Me". I love all the RTZ CD's but this is the one that sounds like Tom Scholz played on it. He did'nt but the engineering and production is very good akin to Tom's impeccable, perfectionist style.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Brad, we'll miss you............2007-03-10

I've always had a weak spot for Boston and this disc from RTZ. Polished and slick, true, but that was the name of the game back then. I had the chance to see RTZ on this tour at The Ritz outside of Detroit and met the band prior to the show. The one thing I always share about that meeting is what a GREAT guy Brad Delp was. I was expecting a big ego after the monster success of Boston, but that was not the case. Having met quite a few "rock stars" over the years I'll always keep Brad near the top of the list. He was incredibly friendly and eager to chat with all. A clsssy guy who will be missed by many. Buy this RTZ disc while you can before they're horded by the opportunists seeking to cash in.
