Editorial Reviews
Guitar Player, Nov.1993
Paul Chasman weaves bits of Django, Chet, and Lenny Breau into a stunning new solo style....An essential solo acoustic disk.
Product Description
Solo guitar arrangements of songs from jazz, ragtime, rock, pop, and Latin sources. Guitar Player Magazine called Chasman's playing "stunning," and added, "His harmonics technique is simply astounding, as is his ability to execute two or three parts simultaneously. An essential solo acoustic disk."

Among the legions of rockers who died way too young--including Jeff Buckley's father, Tim--few have approached the artistic range and seemingly limitless potential on display here. In the decade since Buckley's death, there has been such a flood of posthumous releases that it might be hard to remember that he issued only a four-cut live EP and a studio debut album while he was alive. This anthology serves as an effective introduction for the initiate, showing how Buckley could rock with the slash-and-burn intensity of Led Zeppelin on "Eternal Life (Road Version)," turn rapturous with the reverie of "Lover, You Should've Come Ove," and cover the likes of Edith Piaf ("Je N'en Connais Pas La Fin") and Leonard Cohen (his by now iconic transformation of "Hallelujah"). Completists will need this for the live versions of "So Real" and the Smiths' "I Know It's Over," previously unreleased commercially. Whether Buckley would ever have been able to balance the control that mature artistry requires and the ecstatic abandon that distinguished him, such raw talent continues to startle. --Don McLeese

when did i start writing reviews? .......2007-08-02
how did i live 38 years without knowing this voice, this sound? everytime i listen, it is different but... each time, it is affects me significantly. really feeling something from (having a reaction to), music... it doesn't happen all the time but, when it does... it's amazing. jeff buckley... wow. what else is there to say?
The Best Buckley Compilation .......2007-07-29
I have to admit that I'm at a bit of a loss to explain why Buckley fans wouldn't like this album.
So Real is essentially the best songs from Grace, plus a few of Buckley's best songs that never made it to a full studio album.
Its basically Grace plus a few extras, which to me is great! If you don't currently own any Buckley albums, this one's got you covered! Why buy Grace when you can get it all PLUS great songs like "Everybody Here Wants You" and "Je n'en connais pas la fin".
Jeff Buckley was so Awesome........2007-07-20
This latest issue of some of Jeff Buckley's best selections is a must have for fans. Included are some good Buckley standards -- like Hallelujah -- but also included is a live cover of Eternal Life and a moving rendition of one of Morrissey's (The Smiths) tear jerkers, I know it's Over.
Given that Jeff was tragically lost to the world almost 10 years ago, it is sadly gratifying to have the full range of his recordings so that we can at least celebrate his talent and remember him very fondly.
THE BEST INTRODUCTION TO A GIFTED BUT CHALLENGING ARTIST.......2007-06-01
One of the best things about reviewing music is that it compels the writer to listen hard and fair to everything that comes out of a speaker. If you attempt to write something based solely on your own preconceptions, then a) you aren't listening, and b) you are not qualified to inflict others with your words. Jeff Buckley was the type of artist that I knew had special qualities, but there were elements of his presentation that held me at arm's length. He singing range was extraordinary, but his dramatic tendencies often overwhelmed me. Sometimes, I even found myself recoiling as he floated freely in the ether, conveying a part of his spirit that eluded me entirely. Until I understood this aspect of his art, I knew I was unqualified to review his music, but "So Real: Songs from Jeff Buckley" has taught me how to listen.
The problem I had with most all previous product by Buckley - and I've heard most of them -is that they presumed you to understand Buckley's genius. "Live at Sin-e" "and "Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk" both overwhelmed me, for very different reasons. "...Sin-e" is concise, but it puts Buckley on display as a performer, and left me wondering if he was emotionally attached to the songs, or simply in love with the sound of his own voice. "...Drunk" was an embarrassment of riches, with way too much material for me to digest, especially since most of it was left unfinished in the wake of Buckley's untimely death. Only "Grace" conveyed a full picture of the man as a fully developed artist, and even that record demanded that you understand and accept his strange welding of Van Morrison's spirit with Robert Plant's histrionics.
"So Real" is by far the best place for a person to discover the beauty of Buckley's music. By culling the best bits of his recorded output and distributing them intelligently over one exceptional disk, it serves as a roadmap into the soul of an extremely gifted performer. Parts of this collection are merely brilliant; other parts are revelatory. The "Grace" selections sound every bit as good today as they did back in '94, while songs like "Forget Her" and "Eternal Life" (both from posthumous releases) are frighteningly intense and emotionally stunning. For reasons similar to those I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I recently indulged myself in the music of Leonard Cohen and I now find myself with a respect for his artistry that borders on awe. Re-hearing Buckley's version of Cohen's "Hallelujah" makes it obvious that this is a definitive performance, as if sung by a fallen angel who embraces the sanctity of this mortal coil. There are still moments of excess, but instead of histrionics, I now hear an artist utilizing every ounce of his ability to convey something that is spiritual and ethereal, but also `so real'. I know I waited too long to truly hear the elegance and raw emotion in Jeff Buckley's music. I hope you don't make the same mistake. A- Tom Ryan
Excellent CD for new and old J Buckley fans!!.......2007-05-29
This CD proves again that Jeff Buckley is the greatest musician that has ever recorded music. Not only does this CD give its reader an excellent mixture of some his best tunes but also adds two unreleased songs that are truly rare and excellent in choice. His version of "I Know It's Over" can send chills down anyone's spine and will make you stop and listen to each word. You will find yourself playing this song over and over, realizing what a beautiful voice he had and how he could take any song and make it his own. If you are new to Jeff Buckley and are wondering if this CD is a good choice, it does a wonderful job of introducing you to a rare talent that has yet to be mastered from anyone else in the music industry. And if you are new, after this CD, you will definitely become a Jeff Buckley fan. To the already Jeff Buckley fan, I highly recommend it and believe me, it is NOT a waste of money - it is worth every penny and more!

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Fun Family Music.......2007-04-11
This is a fun musical experience for kids of all ages. My son (age 9) has memorized almost all of the songs and loves the humor in the music. we have given this CD as a gift numerous times and every one seems to love it.
Truly a Family Party.......2007-01-19
Good CD to listen to with the kids. Great change of pace for when the kids start to wear out one of their other favorite CDs. A few of the songs are geared more for the adults than the kids but a good mix of songs for everyone.
New Mom...New Trout Fan.......2005-09-08
OK,I admit it...I ordered this CD because of one song, My Hair Had A Party Last Night (The phrase has become a regular morning greeting in our house.) The great surprise about this CD...every song is a winner. No telling kids what to do or think, just great songs about cool stuff that sounds like fun! We love it!
Buy it!!!.......2004-05-30
Love, love, love!!! I have given this CD numerous times as a gift. Just a great collection of songs! I DARE you to NOT try to count along with 18 Wheels on a Big Rig!
For "adult" Trout, check out "Reel Life"...I listen to it all the time, even after owning it for about 7 years now. Enjoy!
kids music for adults.......2004-05-10
For everyone who has ever said "not AGAIN" when loading traditional "kids" music in the car, this is the album for your family. We got ours on cassette and wore it out; we're still not tired of it. Who can resist a group that counts to 18 in roman numerals and gets it right? The songs are singable, danceable, and great fun. It's got just the right mix of fast and slow, silly and serious, and none of the annoying frenetic goofiness often heard in kids albums.

Perhaps flamenco legend Enrique Morente was prescient when he named his daughter Estrella (star in Spanish), because that's precisely what this singer is destined to become judging by the strength of this phenomenal debut album. Originally released in Spain, My Songs and a Poem speaks directly to the heart of classic flamenco with a selection of tangos, bulerías, and other styles, with music written mostly by her father. Yet she is not merely aping Enrique; rather, she makes this material entirely her own. From the aching sweetness of "Moguer" to the fire of the opening song "Cockles," the younger Morente shows off her virtuosic dexterity, her voice's color shifting from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other. Her sound is rich and round, yet she maintains an exacting precision in her delivery. Her worthy collaborators include a notable roundup of uncles and cousins, including the Carmonas (who perform as Ketama, a flamenco-rock-jazz-world hybrid). Another guest is guitarist Alfredo Lagos, whose razor-sharp articulation is a delight. The sound of these recordings, made in a variety of studios across Spain and in live performances, is uniformly rich and clear. The most striking fact about this album, though, is that it's the work of a 20-year-old. Estrella Morente is a fully formed artist, technically and emotionally, who embodies the soulful spirit of cante jondo, or "deep song." In picking up this album for international sale, Real World proves that it's still on the cutting edge of bringing local talent to wider audiences. --Anastasia Tsioulcas

Epic Journey.......2007-06-29
Estrella provides us with the traditional flamenco music that has been upgraded to our tastes of today. I have used her music in many of my flamenco classes, I teach adult beginner flamenco, and all my students love it. She is an asset to the Flamenco community. As a dancer and teacher I appreciate her DUENDE FLAMENCA!
A beautiful singer with a beautiful voice........2007-05-13
Morente's voice is gorgeous and wonderful to listen to. Her songs are mostly quite enjoyable. This is flamenco that sounds traditional and yet modern. Good for mood music and easy listening while working around the house.
estrella morente.......2007-04-27
an amazing singer! she is fantastic and the entire album is wonderful. Great selection for lovers of flamenco and Spanish music.
Best CD I've Heard In A While.......2007-01-10
Sometimes words just can't describe how good a piece of work is. This is one of those times. This CD is A+++++++++++.
Rare, silky...sublime............2005-08-12
Estrella, at the begining of what will certainly be a long and important career, skillfully blends the deep tradition of canto jondo...with the vibrance, vigor and optimism of her relatively young age. The importance of this album will be more fully appreciated in the decades to come. For those NOT versed in flamenco....This is a beautiful, silky and dynamic introduction to the potential of the female flamenco voice.

A Treasure For Parents & Toddlers.......2004-07-15
My 4 grandsons, age 4 and under, their parents and grandparents absolutely love this CD and others by the incomparable James Coffey. His amazing train videos and his music CD's about trains and also Animal Groove, never fail to delight. The toe tapping rhythms are uplifting and even babies respond - I can attest to that - our 5 month old giggles and jumps about in his saucer when we turn up the volume and clap (or run about the room pretending to be a train) - you get the picture! We are all hooked on James Coffey words, music, and videos.
At age 3, one grandson had all the songs memorized. This grandmother in her sixties provides all the grandchildren and their friends with this CD and the others in the collection. A mood lifter, an educational tool, an all around great CD for all ages. The musical arrangements are fantastic.
Kids will love it, parents will love it.......2004-03-07
I love kid music that I can enjoy also. (Especially on those long car rides when the kids' music has to be played over and over to keep the little ones content.) The music and lyrics of all the songs on this CD are delightful to adult and child ears alike. The music is cheerful, contemporary, and full of train lore and sounds--a key to its success with the little train fan in our family. This Jim Coffey winner is right on track!
My kid LOVES this CD. Yours will too!!!.......2003-03-07
My son is totally into trains of all types. This is a trait that runs in the family. I don't even know HOW he got into them so much. He just loves 'em. I guess I am happy--its sort of an American tradition to be into trains. They meant so much to our history.
So--when at the local library I spied this CD, I borrowed it. Oh my gosh. My son just LOVES this thing. Especially the songs with sound effects--but in other songs he hears the key words: train, railroad, etc. He is only 2 years old--so the focus of this CD on one subject, his favorite subject, helps him to appreciate all the songs--not just the ones with a whistle here, a bell there, etc.
Finally, I have to say that even I really like the CD. It is some old standards mixed with new songs--but almost always in a style that an adult can stand to listen to. Coffey has a nice voice--and he is not a gaggle of kids singing nursery rhymes. It is really a nice break from that kind of kids music CD. A couple songs are a bit new-Jazzy, and while not bad are just not MY cup of tea. But others include very tasteful folky sounding songs and some straight ahead foot-stomping real travelin' music, if ya know what I mean.
From 2 to 92 years old, nobody will be offended, and many will be happy to hear old favorites and tasteful music that kids (and big kids) who love trains will love. Buy this CD if your kid is into trains.
Songs relating to the lure and lore of trains.......2002-05-17
In My Mama Was A Train, James Coffey performs fifteen original and traditional songs relating to the lure and lore of trains. Children of all ages (and a great many adult railroad buffs) will enjoy Coffey's highly recommended signature piano, acoustic guitar and harmonic stylings, along with the real sounds and rhythms of locomotive engines accenting and enhancing each piece. The songs include What Do You Hear? (2:39); That Little Red Caboose Behind The Train (3:04); Nine Hundred Miles (3:02); Counting Those Railroad Cars (1:35); Old Engine No. 9 (2:04); Build A Bridge (3:43); Rock Island Line (1:56); Wabash Cannonball (3:15); New River Train (2:15); I'm A Train (1:51); Casey Jones (2:26); Down By The Station (1:36); Little Red Caboose (1:33); Workin' In The Railway Yard (2:58); and the title piece, My Mama Was A Train (2:49).

Recorded in the wake of the late Khan's triumphant performance at the 1985 WOMAD festival, this 10-track collection features the lighter, folkier side of the Pakistani classical music singer's repertoire. Accompanied by his nine-member "party" on acoustic guitar, mandolin, and a full complement of tabla and harmonium, Khan unleashes typically stunning vocal phrases marked by blinding speed, cutting tone, and unearthly ornamentation. The infectious "Yaad-E-Nabi Gulshan Mehka," with lyrics in praise of Muhammed, finds the qawwali singer at his most effervescent, while the ghazal (love song) "Mast Nazroon Se Allah Bachhae" features an insistent hand-clapped rhythm and the full Party chorus singing together in unison. --James Rotondi

King of the Qawali Sufi Music!.......2007-03-23
I couldn't say more. This is his best album ever.
GREAT MUSIC.......2005-10-07
THE SONGS THAT ARE SHORTER IN LENGTH ARE WHAT I ENJOY BETTER.THE SELECTIONS ON THIS CD ARE SOME OF HIS GREATEST HITS THAT ANYONE WHO IS A LOVER OF NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN WILL ENJOY TREMENDOUSLY.
Exhilirating.......2003-07-14
Nusrat Fateh Ali has a commanding voice and booming sonic presence. the Music of Qawalli is often an acquired listening experience. While i cannot speak for the listeners who listen to this musical form without knowing the linguistic intricacy and beauty mentioned in Qawalli verses, i can speak for the ones that do know the language its mostly sung in.
Musically the soundscape is beautiful and full of range and pleasing to the ear, knowing the lyrics behind it however gives the listener a totally new , almost religious sense of experience to this music, which most people feel is a very trance like state often that Whirling dervishes go into.
However anyone can truly enjoy the bliss featured within Qawalli rhythms and melodies which often seem natural, resonating with the listener's mindsets. The Japanese have claimed to have said that God resides in the vocal chords of Nusrat. The range expressed herein might bring that statement to elevation. It is not for everyone though. Qawalli music often takes patience to grow into a listening experience
Once the rapture of the sounds have you, its hard to let go.
over-produced.......2001-11-19
Listen to Haq Ali Ali on this, and listen to it on something like Nusrat Live at Prince Albert Hall, you understand that there's no need to have the chorus echoing and all the voices in perfect sync, in fact that takes away from the passion of it, when it's almost discordant, that it demands something from God. This cd doesn't seem live, it seems cut and pasted and touched too much, and the string instrument, whether its a guitar or mandolin or whatever, it isn't common in nusrat and sometimes its okay, but mostly I dont care for it. It lacks the fullness, the brutality of real ecstatic quvalli, its like elevator quvalli or kennyg quvalli.
I was very disappointed with this album when I first got it, but now I like it some.
Great Selection!.......2001-03-08
This is a diverse collection of Nusrat. It has the rise and fall of his Punjabi Lyrical Ballads as well as some of his best Urdu singles. Being a Qawwali Singer, I feel his qawwali numbers are far better than the ones he has sung in pure ghazal format. That's the main reason for my dislike of his Urdu Numbers.
1. Allah Hoo Allah Hoo - Fine. 5. Mast Nazroon Se Allah Bachhae - Beautiful, Romantic and Very Careful in Analyzing the Beauty and its effects :-) 6. Woh Hata Rahe Hain Pardah - Simply Lovely. I think this number holds a lot of power among his well sung Urdu Qawwalis and Ghazals. This is a very poetic piece and has his inner voice in it. 7. Yeh Jo Halka Saroor Hae - Another All Time Great Number. 8. Biba Sada Dil Morr De - Nice One. 9. Yaadan Vichhre Sajan Dian Aiyan - Recollecting the old lover. Well, obviously sad. 10. Sanson Ki Mala Pey - Very Poetic. Very Beautiful. Here he is expressing a lover's sentiments in words and narrating them point by point.
Great Selection.

Album Description
These two classic, iconic albums from THE LOUVIN BROTHERS have certainly stood the test of time. Raven presents them on one brilliant CD, proving that Tragic Songs of Life (1956) and Satan is Real (1960) sound as thrilling today as ever. With their impassioned gospel themes, these two LPs capture the very essence of the brothers at the peak of their powers. Charlie and Ira's sublime harmonies and hard-driving take on traditional country provided the blueprint for future generations of country and rock musicians. From the enigmatic Gram Parsons and his protege Emmylou Harris to a long list of contemporary adherents (including Uncle Tupelo, Hank Williams III etc), the legend and influence of the Louvin Brothers continues unabated. Tragic Songs of Life contains some of their most powerful and emotive singing on `Kentucky', `Katie Dear' and the hit single `Knoxville Girl'. With its striking cover and even more startling contents (`The Christian Life', `Satan's Jeweled Crown', `There is a Higher Power'), Satan is Real became a signature release for the duo. With four bonus tracks from the period, this outstanding value 2-for-1 CD delivers 28 of the very best from the brothers' deep catalogue of classic songs.

Album Description
Nine highly acclaimed original baseball story-songs. Among the characters covered on this cd are Eddie Klepp (first white man to play in the Negro Leagues), Moe Berg (a catcher who also was a US spy just before WWII), Max Patkin (Clown Prince of Baseball), Dock Ellis (who pitched a no hitter under the influence of LSD), Richie Allen (booed by racist Philadelphia fans, he'd write "b-o-o" in the dirt in response), Fred Bonehead Merkle (whose baserunning error cost the NY Giants the pennant in 1908), and Eddie Waitkus (shot by a female stalker, his story was the basis for the movie "The Natural").

Chuck Hits A Home Run.......2005-03-02
I had the pleasure of seeing Chuck perform some of these songs one fine sunny afternoon before a Tourists' game at McCormick field. The music on the CD will make you feel as though your sitting in the bleachers at Wrigley Field in 1967 and the wind is blowing out, and Richie Allen is coming to the plate for the Phillies and you just know that the Cubs are going to lose again, but, hey, the beer is cold and it's not February. It's not all sunshine and apple pie, however, as Chuck covers some of baseballs darker and infamous stories most notably "Letters In The Dirt". Chuck writes with a light and clever touch. You can't help but doff your cap to him.

A very sensual CD.......2003-04-06
Aurah is a really good CD. What i like about it the most is that it combines a mystical feeling with sensuality. It feels like red velvet and silk. I used it as background music for a workshop on creating relationships and it switched everybody into this delightfully sensual mood. The music is exotic, light and beautiful and stands out amongts the many "new Age" type Cds that suggest mysticism with poor music quality. Lots of quality here. I have put it aside in my special music box.
Finally Something Amazing!.......2000-09-26
I've been looking for songwriters to incorporate filmscoring ideas into their songs. THIS IS THE ONE! This music calles for dreamers and musiclovers! Amazing music - you must have it in your catalog!

PURE AND ENCHANTING BUT RATHER MONOTONE.......2000-06-20
For an a cappella album recorded without instruments, this album represents how several human voices can merge in synergy to create a spine-tingling atmosphere of sound. The first few tracks definitely rank up there with the worlds finest music but after you have listened to this record for a while the tracks begin to seem become more undistinguished and blend in with each other because they all sound so much alike with the same basic character. Like many recordings of Georgian music, the astounding harmonies and melodies come to create an intoxicating (in a figurative sense) effect. After a while of listening to this music your head seems to get lost in a swirling effect. It's really quite unique. When I played this album for some friends, the first thing they compared it to was Gregorian chant. However, while listening to such ethnic music with a specific orientation, it is important to remember the culture behind it for that is what gives the music its extra depth. At a Georgian table ritual of feast conducted by a Tamada, individual courses of food are consumed between toasts and songs (like the ones on this album). For example the first song on this album is "sung at the very beginning of a feast being a hymn to eternal life that wishes a long life to all those present at the feast." Just the very glancing at the descriptions of the Georgian foods served such as Eggplant and beans with walnut sauce, bread with melted cheese and chicken with tomatoes, onions and fresh herbs never fail to intrigue my appetite and culinary imagination. This reminds me of the Georgian myth of when God was sending the different peoples to their destined lands, but God was enlightened at how the Georgians were still there celebrating and feasting. Consequently God gave to the Georgians the land God was saving for her/himself. Also included is some information about the ancient traditions of Georgian polyphony and how they compare and contrast between the different regions of Georgia. The wine producing region in Eastern Georgia known as Kakhetia is home to the Tsinandali Choir as these songs are common in Kakhetian gatherings. If you are curious about all the details, I suggest you get the album and read the cover booklet- I don't want to spoil the surprises or rehash too many words that have already been stated. I would have given this album a four star rating because I was expecting some music more striking at first, perhaps something akin to Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares which Georgian choir is often compared to. And I didn't expect it to be so monotone, but the idea that this music grows and becomes more striking with each listen and the wonderful culture behind it all makes up for it. All in all, it's a really great thing that there is at least one recording of Georgian music on mass distribution through Peter Gabrial's Real World label.
