About the Artist
Many moms and dads remember the great music of Wendy and Mary from twenty years ago. That same Mary - Mary Rice Hopkins - continues to touch the hearts of children and their families with her fun-to-sing, easy-to-learn, Bible-based original music. Mary's redesigned and re-released older titles continue to be strong sellers as parents and children's workers introduce their children to favorite Mary songs like "Hip Hip Hooray Hippopotamus," "In My Garden," "Boomerang" and "Superman." Far from being retired, Mary is still writing, composing, recording and performing for families and for Mom's groups around the world. Scheduled new releases include a preschool praise and worship album, a Scripture-memory album, and the next volumes in her new Sing Through The Bible series!

Stanley Kubrick's demanding perfectionism in all aspects of the filmmaking process has led to some of the most memorable soundtracks of the modern era. Kubrick's taste for the classics led to his scrapping Alex North's original score for 2001: A Space Odyssey in lieu of the "temporary" tracks he had used for editing, turning Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra into an unlikely 20th-century pop icon. For his 1971 adaptation of Anthony Burgess's cautionary future-shocker, Kubrick once again turned to the classics. Malcolm McDowell's protagonist Droog Alex's taste for Beethoven is given a nice tweaking by Moog pioneer Walter (now Wendy) Carlos's synthesized take on the glorious Ninth Symphony. Some have complained that the now-primitive electronics involved give it a dated feel. Disturbingly--and effectively--other-worldly is more like it. Kubrick also imbues repertory standards by Rossini and Elgar with dark, frequently hilarious irony, and makes Gene Kelly's sunny reading of "Singin' In The Rain" the underscore to an all-too-accurate prediction of societal nightmares to come. --Jerry McCulley

Prisoner 6 double-five 3-2-1.......2007-03-16
The soundtrack album of CLOCKWORK ORANGE, even with it's simple (and supposedly) outdated Wendy Carlos recordings, holds up far better than the actual film has over these 36 years. This story takes place in the 1990s, and we all know that today's world is nothing like Anthony Burgess' dismal and nightmarish vision . . . don't we?
Most of the CLOCKWORK ORANGE soundtrack's classical selections are by Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. These spirited Beethoven and Rossini interpretations remain some of the very best ever recorded.
The excerpt of Wendy's "Timesteps" is the most compelling piece here. In the film, this stark aural collage is background to Alex's behavior modification. In order to shorten his prison sentence, the violent sociopath is made chemically ill while forced to view scenes of rapine and bloodshed. His sickness can only be arrested by replacing his natural criminal urges with passive thoughts.
It's hard to listen to "Overture To The Sun" without recalling the spotlighted naked girl who tempts an on-exhibit Alex into a state of unwellness that he likens to "wanting to snuff it." His freedom to choose brutality has been taken from him forcefully, through violent reprogramming. The subsequent events that precipitate Alex's restoration into a fully non-functional member of society beset him in a fashion ironically similar to the chaos he once left in his violent wake.
The stark images and perversities of this movie tend to stay with a person. Perhaps watching Kubrick's CLOCKWORK ORANGE has in some way "programmed" the viewer, too, by desensitizing us to the madness that is all around. Maybe this film holds up better than I thought. I must have a glass of choko moloko and reconsider . . .
Kubrick At His Best.......2007-01-11
This is a fantastic Kubrick movie. Based on a novel of equal respect, this movie details troubled youth, violence, and sex in a modern-yet-more-so world. The slang of the young men in the movie is a mixture of British and Russian slang terminology created by the book's author. A must-see for the Kubrick fan out there.
Good soundtrack.......2006-02-20
I own this on vinyl and yes an exellent soundtrack from an exellent movie
Easier to experience than the movie!.......2005-08-17
Having purchased this soundtrack along with its respective CD score (by Wendy Carlos), it is a wonderful installment to any soundtrack fan/buff. The awesome sound of classical music, contained in the CDs, in which director Stanley Kubrick chose for the picture, is so juxtaposing it is brilliant. Even if one does not know a lick of classical music, one can easily suggest this soundtrack as a useful introduction into the genre. Though the film may not be as easy to experience as the music contained inside, the soundtrack stands as a milestone for music in film perhaps only beaten by the director's previous work in '2001 A Space Odyssey'.
Horrorshow Lomticks of Music to do the old Ultra-Violence By. .......2005-07-28
Bolshi Yarblockos, my droggies. Viddy thou this incredible soundtrack from the film A Clockwork Orange. Cued from the novel by Anthony Burgess, the musical selections mainly focus on the Beethoven obsession of the main character Alex, however Carlos's deep knowledge of the classical repetoire and Kubrick's neurotic perfectionism combine to fill out this album. I love most of the tracks here, and have listened to them since 1972.
My personal favorite is the title music of the film, Henry Purcell's "Funeral Music for Queen Mary," a piece so appropriate to the film that Purcell must have been channelling the future when he wrote it in the late 17th century. Carlos's interpretation of this Purcell piece is astounding in its forboding textures and alientating timbres. Electronic tympani have never sounded better - and were never used like this before. Ring modualtions, filter sweeps, phased sawtooth angel trumpets and resonate devil trombones - oh bliss!
I also liked the strange music Kubrick chose - "I want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper," and "Anthem to the Sun," both obscure and perfect.
Carlos's avant-garde composition "Timesteps" appears in abbreviated form here, and for most listeners this abridgement is enough.
The concluding ironic use of "Singing in the Rain," is wonderful, and after an album (and film) full of electronics, classical music, and weirdness, a standard is shocking enough.
There is a new version of the soundtrack put out by Carlos herself, which includes only her work. Some tracks composed but not used in the film appear here, as do some track used, but not appearing on the OST as well. Timesteps in its 13:37 form is also on this album.
For those fans of Prog rock: Viddy the film when Alex visits a record store: Notice the Vertigo swirl above the main desk, also in the wrecked foyer of Alex's highrise, one of the figures on the vandalised mural has "Suck it and see" written on it, also the name of a Vertigo music sampler of the same era.

Album Description
The shore-front Lighthouse Café at Hermosa Beach was the hub of the L.A. Jazz scene throughout the '50s. From 1949 until 1961, this Californian beach front niterie may have hosted everyone from Miles to the MJQ, Lee Morgan to Cannonball Adderley, The Jazz Messengers to The Jazz Crusaders but it is for its resident (Light) House Band that this venue is fondly remembered. Mainly comprised of former Stan Kenton soloists, The Lighthouse All-Stars boasted such stars as Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Giuffre, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli and many more. . On this Giant Steps release, it's Stan Getz plus Teddy Charles (vibraphone) who are in the spotlight. In doing so, it recaptures some of the magic that was unique to those nightly sessions at The Lighthouse back in the day. Giant Steps.

Customer Reviews:
One great song and..........2007-04-08
I remember (with warm feelings) the Orange County Teen Club dances of my youth.
One of my favorite songs from those dances was "One Fine Morning" by the group Lighthouse.
You remember those days, Rare Earth, Blood Sweat & Tears, Chicago... etc, when actual bands played dances and actually had horn sections... I was so nostalgic, that I bought this album thinking that I only remember one song, but it should all be good.
Oops!
One good song, mediocre reproduction and a bunch of stuff I didn't bother to copy into my 70's folder of music on my computer.
Nostalgia can be sweet, but if you want this song, you are better off to pay for a single song download.
Worst sound quality I've ever heard on a CD.......2007-01-10
OMG...
What a crappy audio remix! Sounds like my decades old worn out 8-Track tape with the treble turned off and a bass that must have come from another band. I am sick. The only thing available from a great group and I get this. The selection of the songs is not too bad, but the sound quality is so poor that I am about ready to toss it in the trash and get out my worn - but still much better than this - LPs. Please, can someone reissue this with quality sound?
I give it a 3 (5 for the great band and songs and 1 for sound quality)
A good quality LP recorded directly onto CD would have been 10 times better. Too bad we can't get the early RCA LPs too.
Poorly Mixed/Engineered - They Ruined It.......2006-08-15
I give the CD 3 stars simply because I love "One Fine Morning," but I have to agree with Bill Larkin, the guy who submitted his review on July 23, 2006. The remix is in large part a disaster. The intro to the song sounds nothing like it did on the original vinyl release; it sounds like it was recorded using a cheap cassette recorder in someone's garage. The ride cymbal is muted as though a blanket was thrown over it. The driving rhythm guitar is also muted, lacking the sharp, punctuating sound on the original recording. The solo piano in the middle of the song sounds like it was recorded in another room. To the people who engineered this song: IT'S A SOLO - IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FEATURED, NOT PUT INTO ANOTHER ROOM!!! Overall, the remix of One Fine Morning sounds like it was done by a bunch of kindergarten kids exposed to a mixing board for the first time. It is just all out of balance and that is very disappointing for those of us who bought this cd in large part because we wanted to hear One Fine Morning again. I had read Mr. Larkin's review prior to purchasing this album but I was hoping that he was wrong. Unfortunately he was right on the money. For some reason they didn't ruin the other songs, though. "Pretty Lady," the other song I wanted, sounds like it did on the original vinyl. Why they had to mess with One Fine Moring and ruin it like they did is a tragedy.
Ok, I am writing this two months later. I thought perhaps my memory wasn't serving me right, but today I listened to the original mix of One Fine Morning from the original LP and my memory is fine. Unfortunately the remastered version IS NOT. It stinks! They totally ruined it, throwing it all out of balance and taking away the electric feel of the original mix. The remastered one on this album sounds like they found bits and pieces of the separate instrument tracks and just threw them together without any regard for what the song as a whole should sound like. For those of you who remember what the original mix sounded like, you will know exactly what I am talking about when you listen to this disgusting poor excuse for a remaster. Poor Lighthouse. Note: my acerbic comments apply only to One Fine Morning. To the deaf souls who did the remaster - couldn't you have had mercy on us and chosen another track to ruin instead????
One Really Bad Morning.......2006-07-24
The backcover touts "Digtally Remixed". Above it says "from the original tapes". The CD credits "re-mixing engineered by Frank Marrone and Robert Hanson". The CD goes on to credit "re-mixing produced by Paul Hoffert, Ralph Cole, Skip Prokop, and Bob McBride". They should all quit the recording business immediately and find other work.
If you are like me, you look for quality re-releases of older material. Since there are 16 tracks on this one, it caught my eye. Particularly for the 70's hit "One Fine Morning". I figured the existing releases currently available of that track were not that bad, but it could always be improved upon with today's technology.
Not by these guys. They have to be deaf. Or they let the wrong take get on the final CD. Or they were hung-over when they re-mixed "One Fine Morning". If they want to continue working in the recording industry, they should get the label to quickly re-call this disaster and get it right and then re-release it. It's that bad.
As someone else here already noted, the bass track sounds different than the original. But that, is the least of the problems. The string section sounds like it was in the parking lot. The electric piano solo sounds like it was in the next room. The cymbals have no high-end at all. The lead guitar solo sounds like it was recorded in a 55-gallon drum. The horns and the vocal come out on top (as they should) but when the rest is in the mud, it's horrible.
This is a real shame. Especially when you spend your hard-earned money only to find out that the one track you really wanted should be used as a prime example of how NOT to re-mix music. If "One Fine Morning" was want you wanted from this CD, save your money.
If the other 15 tracks is what you wanted, amazingly, they are ok.
one of my favorite bands ever........2006-06-04
i just really love lighthouse. a horn + strings +etc. band that sounds brighter than chicago and more fun than blood sweat & tears. i wish more of their stuff was on cd, i only have this, my aunt's "can you feel it" on record, and the newish one from the 90's, song of the ages.
i especially like one fine morning, the songs from can you feel it (can you feel it, magic's in the dancing, pretty lady), hats off to the stranger, and little kind words. around the middle isn't too special to me, but it's still good.
you should also look at "song of the ages". the whole album is terrible, but if you're not too cheap then the last song, time tides, is worth the price of the whole thing. more really, but don't tell anyone or they'll raise the price :P

Album Description
This double LP, which was trumpeter Lee Morgan's next-to-last recording, contains four lengthy side-long explorations by the trumpeter's regular quintet of the period (with Bennie Maupin on tenor, flute and bass clarinet, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Mickey Roker). The music is very modal-oriented and probably disappointed many of Morgan's longtime fans but he had gotten tired of playing the same hard bop-styled music that he had excelled at during the past decade and was searching for newer sounds. The influence of the avant-garde and early fusion is also felt in spots but the trumpeter's sound was still very much intact and he takes some fiery solos that still sound lively decades later.
Players Include:
Lee Morgan (trumpet)
Bennie Maupin (flute, tenor saxophone)
Harold Mabern (piano)
Jymie Merritt (bass)
Mickey Roker (drums)
Jack DeJohnette (drums)
Customer Reviews:
Good on vinyl; better and complete on CD.......2006-01-01
The music on this album, even in its LP version, was the sort that made West Coast listeners wonder why "East Coast guys" seemed to play so much HARDER than other folks recorded at the same venue.
Lee was at the top of his post-Messengers form, and Maupin's work is among his best, even looking back from today, thirty-five years later. The rhythm section cooks, and Blue Note did NOT edit the songs down into "pop" length, even on the double LP.
There's a marvelous slow piece, "Neophilia" ("love of the new") featuring Lee's rarely heard and gorgeous fleugelhorn and Maupin's bass clarinet, rarely heard outside of his Davis/Hancock dates. (Why isn't this tune a standard by now?!?) and Lee's uptempo "soul-jazz" standards (added to the box set) including one on which an eager Jack DeJohnette guests on drums, champing at the bit. HARD post-bop lived!
Sad to think, these many years later, what else Morgan, and this band might have gone on to do....

Not your 60's Morgan.......2004-09-03
Lee Morgan was listening to the Miles Quintet and was ready to leave his 'Sidewinder' days behind. That says a lot about the man who was expected to write bogaloo songs for the rest of his career. This is a different kind of Lee Morgan record, and a little diffcult at first if you are expecting a classic hard bop live album. Thanks to Blue Note for releasing a 3 CD, documenting the best of 3 nights at the Lighthouse. The sound is not the best it could be, you need to crank it up, but that is the only minor flaw for a stellar release.
Lee Lightin' Up The Lighthouse.......2002-02-02
This is by far one of the better jazz albums ever assembled. If you're a fan of Lee's "Rumproller" and "Cornbread" albums, you will love this one. The groove of these live performance couldn't be generated in a studio. This isn't just Lee Morgan's music, this is his soul poured on this album.
Approaching greatness.......2000-11-17
"Live at the Lighthouse" is a wonderful live album from the decidedly deceased Lee Morgan. It falls short of greatness for the simple reason that the "head-solo-solo-head" format was getting a bit old on folks at that time (and now as well!)But that criticism aside there is some terrific jazz being played on these three CD's.I won't list the tracks but the closing version of "Sidewinder" is worth the entry fee alone. The only real bummer is the self-serving liner note written by Benny Maupin. Great player that Benny is, he should let his sax do the talking. I mean Lee was his greatest friend ever on Earth but he missed his funeral because of "..performance commitments.."?? Come on Benny, you'll need something better than that!
Great Late Lee.......2000-09-23
Lee Morgan's "Live At The Lighthouse" is great look at the master trumpeter in the year before his tragic murder at the hands of his common-law wife. Originally released as a posthumous double LP, this is the kind of release we were all promised with the advent of the compact disc! Three discs packed full with more than an hour of music each, half of the songs previously unreleased, and improved, remastered sound. Joining Lee on this voluminous set are Bennie Maupin (on tenor sax, bass clarinet and flute), Harold Mabern (on piano), Jymie Merritt (on bass) and Mickey Roker (on drums, with Jack DeJohnette replacing him on a few tracks). The material covered on these discs is typical, classic late Lee. Always the tireless innovator, he only returned to two of his mid 60s Blue Note hits, "The Sidewinder" and "Speedball." The rest of the tunes are new, and exemplify the modern innovations and directions Lee was taking his music in the new decade of the 70s. Along with "The Last Session" and Larry Young's "Mother Ship" (currently unavailable on CD), "Live At The Lighthouse" paints the final portrait of a jazz great taken from this world all to soon.

good old album.......2007-02-21
Had the original album - I was surprised to find the cds.
Canada's Answer to Chicago in New York City.......2005-12-15
I get goosebumps when I think of this album. "Live" doesn't even do it justice. It was explosive. Feb 6, 1972 at Carnegie Hall. "One Fine Morning, Take it Slow" and "I Just Wanna be Your Friend" were the staples of this one fine album but I particularly like the band's versions of "Rockin' Chair, Insane and the "Byrd's" classic "Eight Miles High", the latter mainly because Lighthouse just doesn't play it anymore. The only complaint with the album is I had wished they had done another if only so that songs such as "Pretty Lady" and" Sunny Days" could have been included. I'm fortunate enough to be living in "Lighthouse country" so I get quite a few opportunities to see them even now. If we can get Amazon to put some sound clips with the album selections, then more of you can find and appreciate what most of us already know. Lighthouse rocked...and still does.
Best Live cd I have ever heard.......2003-04-15
WOW! If you like rock/jazz with the power of a live gig, this is the cd for you. Lighthouse, for those of you who don't know was an powerhouse in the 70,s. Under the leadership of Skip Procop this group broke all bounderies, groups like Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, owe much to this group. Songs on this cd that stand out, 1849, Sweet Lulabye, and The Byrds-Eight Miles High.
This is one of those must haves for your collection.
Thanks for coming back to Carnegie Hall.......2002-05-19
I have a special place for this album because of two reasons. I listened to the original concert which was broadcasted on a local FM station while I was at a drive-in movie back in '72. Along with Tom Northcott and magician Doug Henning, they were the first concert I went to at the old Memorial Gardens in Victoria B.C.
This is a stong performance which yields such classic songs as "Eight Miles High", "Take it Slow (Out in the Country)" and "One Fine Morning". Lighthouse has great arrangements on all their songs especially the melodic "Sweet Lullabye" and "1849". They tear a strip off on other notables such as "Insane" and "Rockin Chair". Bob McBrides voice is powerful and blends well with the symphonic sounds of Canada's premiere rock orchestra.
If you listen to the introduction, they were hell bent on making the return to Carnegie Hall a triumph and the audience knew they were in for a great evening of music. Although slightly different order of the songs from the original vinyl, nothing is lost in the text. If you like Chicago, you'll love Lighthouse.

Tight ensemble, great solos.......2007-07-03
This live album was recorded at two performances on the same day, so the solid renditions of the quintet's challenging arrangements clearly demonstrate that this was a tight ensemble that didn't need umpteen studio takes to get it right. The solo work is great all around, and the energy level stays high. Only one track of the seven, "Blue Daniel," is laid back.
One of the aspects of Cannonball's playing I've always liked is the way he used the alto's full range rather than relying too heavily on the horn's upper register for impact. His playing here displays this quality along with his characteristic rapid-fire flow of ideas.
Nat Adderley's cornet shines bright on this session. I've always felt that Nat deserved more recognition than he got. He could play circles around Miles Davis even on a bad day, and yet we tend to think of him as Cannonball's little brother rather than a great jazz artist in his own right. Listen closely to him on this album, and maybe you'll think of him a little differently from now on.
Fantastic!.......2007-06-07
Don't miss this one. Hard Bop at it's best. Cannonball's playing is amazing as usual. Live jazz in 1960 was never better.
Where theres steam theres nuclear fission.......2006-11-03
This ensemble really kick hard on this recording Sam Jones and Louis Hayes thump some of the best rhythmsection playing that exisits , with Victor Feldman so cool in comping he's almost invisible . Add to this Adderley brotherhood at its best, always super groovy , ultra hip ,smooth, but always looking for the knockout blow.
As is with many, if not most live recorings, at times balances are a bit uneven , not of any concern to regular jazz listeners, and in all the recording quality is really good.
Cannonball At the Lighthouse.......2004-12-27
Of all the amazing recordings Cannonball did with his many great quintets/sextets, this I feel is the best. In my opinion, the Adderley quintet records best when live, as this wonderful album proves. It all starts out with the finger-snapping groove of "Sack O' Woe", Cannonball's most famous composition. Every soloist really swings hard, and sets the tone for the rest of album. "Big 'P'", a Jimmy Heath tune written about his brother Percy, continues with the driving feel. Things then slow down a bit with the lovely jazz waltz "Blue Daniel", which shows a more sensitive side to Cannonball and the gang. Victor Feldman, the pianist on this recording, is the only new member of the quintet for this album (the rest are the same as in "Them Dirty Blues", another masterpiece") and he really shows off his compositional skills with the next two numbers, "Azule Serape" and "Exodus", two up-tempo burners. The album then comes to a swinging finish with an amazing version of "What is This Thing Called Love?" and a bonus track of Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight". If you're a fan of any of Adderley's work or just love music that really swings, you'll love this one, guaranteed.
Victor Feldman Joins The Adderley Band!.......2004-08-24
I haven't yet heard an Adderley Brothers recording I didn't like and this one, recorded live at the legendary Southern California club The Lighthouse, is no exception. Adding to the interest here is that in addition to the usual lively playing by Cannonball, Nat, Sam Jones & Louis Hayes, it includes the fine English pianist Victor Feldman. I first heard the late Feldman on the powerful Miles Davis recording "Seven Steps To Heaven." When both the Brothers Adderley and Miles Davis ask you to play with them you must be doing something right.....and Feldman certainly was!

Excellent Live.......2007-02-25
Excellent live from grant a lil short but it s a pure moment of jazz guitar
Best Grant Green Live Album Ever.......2006-05-12
I disagree with the other reviewers that this is not on par with Green's "Alive." In fact, it's much better--possibly the best live jazz album in my collection (and with a collection that includes Miles Davis's 1964 Concert, that's saying something). You can really tell it just all came together for Green and his band that night some 34 years ago. Every time I listen to it I feel bad there aren't another 5 or 6 songs on the CD--but then I just start it over again. The playing on this album is AWESOME, and everyone was great, though the drummer, Greg Williams, and the bass player, William Felder really delivered sterling performances. A must-have for any jazz fan.
Get Alive Instead.......2005-10-27
Much as I like Grant Green's funky jazz cd's, I really didn't like this one. If you want to hear a good live, funky set, get Grant Green "Alive" instead. It is much better than this one.
GRANT GREEN +LIVE+1972= FUNKY GOOD TIME.......2004-08-23
What's wrong with this album? NOTHING!! Well, it is missing Idris Muhammad on drums, but other than that it's great. I do like "Alive" better, but I played that one to death. Now I can go back to it with fresh ears. I hesitated to pick this up because of all the negative reaction by people who were really into Alive, but DAMN! this is good stuff. Come on people this is Grant Green!! Live!! and at the funky high-light of his career. I am also a big fan of Wilton Felder's bass playing and he is all over this album. To all the people that gave this 1 or 2 stars- "Put down the Kenny G and give this another listen"- Dig it!
great album...don't listen to the naysayers.......2003-01-17
I gotta say this is one of the best Grant Green funk albums you'll ever find. I saw that some reviewers said that the playing is sloppy and unfocused on this album. I don't think anything could be further from the truth!!! I own over 50 albums that feature Grant Green and I say this is definately one of his best. From a musicians standpoint, I don't think Green has ever been more inventive on an album. This is way more funky that his earlier blue note work and he uses his guitar more like a snare drum on this album. It is absolutely amazing and completely innovative. I admit that the saxaphone solos are pretty bland on this album but it's really Green who shines. Buy this album if you are even the slighest Grant Green fan...you'll not be dissapointed!

Falls Short of Amazing .......2006-06-13
Ok. And so I've had this album on my Amazon.com Wishlist for over a year and a half now, and I just got this 2 weeks ago. So I probably don't have to explain the extreme anticipation I was experiencing prior to popping this one into the stereo.
But ah, the sheer disappointment I have suffered with this record since then is difficult to put into words. And that's because I'm such a massive fan of Lighthouse Family that I don't feel like writing a single bad review about them. In fact it pains me - so I won't.
All I will say is that you're better off not buying this one. A couple of remixes are good and most of the acoustic versions are nice... but all just fall short of being amazing - as should be (and has been) with all (the other) Lighthouse Family releases.
