5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of songs........2006-02-01

Being that I was born in the mid-eighties, I did not have the priveledge of growing up listening to music of this sort. When I found this CD among my dad's collection I decided to give it a listen because I recognized some of the songs. I'm very glad I did!

I greatly enjoy almost all of the songs, in particular The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.

The rest of the songs are top-notch "oldies" as well, easily recognizable classics. The only song I don't really care for is "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan & Dean, though it is still an okay song.

Overall, I would certainly recommend this CD... when you find one both a father and a daughter can easily enjoy together, it must be good.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on the KID who put this one together.......2002-11-18

This is one BAD example of the music of this decade. First, the 60s started on JAN.one but I guess that dosen't count!
If your looking to get a handle on where R+R (all) comes from this turkey an't it.

5 out of 5 stars I know all of the songs!.......2002-01-23

I hate compilation CD's that are supposed to be the best of something but manage to be the best of whatever singles the producer had lying around in the backseat of his car. This CD, however, is what it claims to be. I've never seen a compilation album with so many hits and so many recognizeable tunes. All of these songs are fun to listen to and the few songs you may not recognize are catchy 60-ish sounding riffs anyway. This is, by far, the most versatile CD I own.

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous CD.......2000-06-23

Hello. It's a real nice collection most of all because it includes some artist i thought I never heard again. Some of them as The Kinks, The Vogues or Jan and Dean aren't easy to find in some other collections. The sound is excelent and the artists are well selected. Congratulations.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to sing with!!.......2006-08-10

These ageless classics are Great. This mix of songs really gets you back to the 60's, crusin' main street, school days, sock hops after the football game, and teenage love. Wow! Great times and Great music!!!!

5 out of 5 stars '60s: Gold Various Artists.......2006-08-03

This series Gold, put out by Universal Music Co. is usually of top quality. Culling from the vast Universal Catalog, the '60s, has an excellent selection of well known standards as well as several "hard to find " chestnuts. The sound quality is very good and 40 songs, make this a thrifty purchase for the asking price.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...'60s GOLD Will Satisfy That Nostalgia Craving.......2006-07-18

'60s GOLD is the latest release in Hip-O Records' "Gold" series. As usual they do a fine job in remastering and song selection--and amazon.com's discounted price makes this a real bargain! I have purchased several previous "Gold" series releases (SOUTHERN ROCK, '70s, BLUES, among others) and have always been pleased, and this is no exception.

However, here are a few points to consider:

*Most of these tracks are from the mid-Sixties. Twenty-six of the tracks were released from 1964 to 1967--eleven from 1967 alone! [Note: All tracks are presented chronologically.]

*There is a heavy emphasis on Motown hits. [Five of which are duplicated from MOTOWN GOLD.] My only concern is why was it necessary to include three(!) Supremes songs?

*The British Invasion is represented by only three artists--The Mindbenders, The Troggs and Procol Harum. The heavy hitters (Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, et. al.) are missing. Also, two of America's biggest bands--The Beach Boys and The Doors--are also MIA.

*Finally, with each disk under sixty minutes, it would have been easy to add another ten to twelve tracks and perhaps rectify some of the above concerns.

But if you're looking for a collection of songs guaranteed to satisfy your Sixties nostalgia craving, there are few releases that will provide that fix better than '60s GOLD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

2 out of 5 stars Why these songs?.......2004-10-19

"A Music Fan" says he only knew one of these songs?!! What cave has he been living in?? His gross lack of music knowlege is scary! You can do better than this compilation - Too few songs and chosen rather arbitrarily. The songs are classics though. Still can't believe previous reviewer didn't know "Sounds of Silence", "Pretty Woman", etc. --- How sad!

2 out of 5 stars skip it.......2004-05-17

This is definately not the 60's compilation CD to get. Who was in charge of choosing the songs on this boring album anyway? I bought it for Van Morrisson, and was not familiar with any of the other songs but one. They weren't good.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Collection - But There Are Better Ones!.......2003-03-24

This fourteen track 60's collection is good but could have been better had it been a 2-cd set. There are some serious deletions here such as The Mamas & Papas (Monday Monday or California Dreaming) , Lovin' Spoonful (Do You Believe In Magic or You Didn't Have To Be So Nice), Creedence Clearwater (Proud Mary or Bad Moon Rising) to name just a few. You do, however, have some great songs here such as "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Byrds, "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison, "Kicks" by Paul Revere & The Raiders, "Sunshine Superman" by Donovan, and "Down On Me" by Big Brother & The Holding Company, etc. For an even better collection I would suggest the 2-cd set entitled "Positively 60's".

Almost 35 years to the day from it's original release, it is our extreme pleasure to re-release this favorite Arlo album. This is the first time Rising Son Records has released it on CD. We have digitally re-mastered every song to give them the highest quality sound available. Seven of these songs are Arlo originals. Doug Dillard, one of our favorite banjo players, joins him on a couple of tracks, notably, "Washington County". These songs are truly timeless. Make a new old friend.

5 out of 5 stars A back to the garden, laid back beauty..........2006-12-13

This was a favorite album for many "hippies" in the early 70's. Still basking in the idealistic, post Woodstock belief that simplifying life can solve all of man's problems, Arlo released this album of uplifting, well played, almost spiritual songs. Listen to this album a few times and you'll be scanning the real-estate ads for some country acreage. This is a feel good album that was released during a time of social turmoil. It was a salve for the spirit at the time and even now soothes the nerves and offers simple rest and some cool shade. Just looking at the album makes me want to grab my overalls and hoe and head for the country. Great memories of a way of life that promised escape from what was perceived as a corrupt, materialistic society. Too bad the majority of the people of that time now live the same lives they rebelled against 35 years ago. Want a break from the complexities of life? Next sunny day, grab this CD; jump in the car; and take a drive in the country.

5 out of 5 stars razor sharp.......2005-11-16

1970's 'Washington County' is easily Arlo Guthrie's finest collection of songs, and so exists as one of the finest albums in one of the most accomplished years of rock and roll history. In the same year Rod Stewart released 'Gasoline Alley', Neil Young, 'After the Goldrush' (at number 18 this was Rolling Stone Magazine's highest rated album of 1970 in their Top 200 albums of the 1970's; 'Washington County' doesn't make the list), and Tim Buckley, 'Starsailor'. But for my money none of these fine works approximates what Arlo Guthrie accomplished on 'Washington County'.

Arlo Guthrie has always been something of a spiritual explorer, and on this release, it seems Christianity was on Arlo's mind, in his heart, and just a bit on his sleeve. Several songs feature direct, intimate allusions to a faith awakening, including 'Gabriel Mother's Highway Ballad #16 Blues' ("Come on children, all come home, Jesus gonna make you well"), 'Valley To Pray' ("I went down to the valley to pray, learnin' about the good old way", and "who will wear the starry crown, Oh, Lord, show me the way"), and on 'I Could Be Singing' ("You and your friends have a party, Welcome your heavenly Dad"). That last song also stands as the strongest protest song on the disc, illustrating how the Guthrie tradition continued to meld morality and social consciousness. The lyrics swipe at Spiro Agnew, the '68 police riots in Chicago, and the shootings at Kent State (which took place only months prior to the recording of 'Washington County'). Despite the drab storyline, 'I Could Be Singing' chimes with an upbeat tempo and melody, as do many of the other tracks Arlo offers. Similarly, 'Percy's Song' (written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1963, but not released until his 'Biograph' box set appeared in 1985) begins with the lyric "Sad news, sad news..." and proceeds to tell a tale of judicial injustice, yet with a light and airy acoustic atmosphere. The only songs even hinting at 'the blues' are the eighth track, the yearning 'If You Would Just Drop By', and Arlo's cover of his father's 'Lay Down Little Doggies', which comes off warm and tender until, in the final verse, we find the 'doggies' are cattle being carted to the stockyards. Again, despite the sad conclusion, one cannot help but to crack a wry smile.

The first seven songs on 'Washington County' will whisk you off to a country and folk dreamland. 'Introduction' caresses us with a promise, "Come closer to me babe, and hear what I say, lay down beside me, listen to my song, it's something other than it's right or it's wrong", before blending into 'Fence Post Blues', carrying a guarantee of "Stand on the good land, children, you know it won't do you in". Of the seven tracks, only the slick and jumping, banjo driven instrumental title track has not yet been mentioned. The album concludes with 'I Want To Be Around', another upbeat track emulating the 'love and peace' values the era idealized with lyrics like "I want to be around, when the stars fall on the ground, walking hand in hand with everyman, sleeping in the sun with everyone". Appropriately, the cover photograph shows Arlo hand sharpening an axe. It was razor sharp by the time he was ready to cut each of these tunes.

'Washington County' was remastered in 2004 and reissued on Arlo's own label in 2005, so there has been ample opportunity to pad the 10 original vinyl tracks with live or alternate takes, or perhaps an unreleased recording from the 'Washington County' sessions. Unfortunately that hasn't happened. Nevertheless, the disc is nothing less than a gift from above (thank God, because it includes printed lyrics), with Arlo and friends (including Hoyt Axton, Clarence White, and Ry Cooder) lovingly tracing out these special compositions. It truly represents the epitome of folk and country rock from an era not easily forgotten. I don't hand out five stars easily, but this is an easy call.

5 out of 5 stars A Priceless Gem.......2005-11-09

Heard this album so long ago and I played it out. "Down in the Valley to Pray"-- you have to feel good after you listen. "Gabriel's Fence Post Blues" is an incredibly complicated guitar accompaniment that Arlo plays effortlessly-- the lyrics are some of the most moving I've ever heard. And "I'll see you in a tin can when you get shipped around"-- his goodbye to the dogies-- is priceless. If you happen to find your way to this CD, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasure for the ears & mind.......2005-11-01

I was 11 years old when my older sisters boyfriend brought this shiny and new from the record store. I remember listening to it and thinking that it was really cool. The title track, "Washington County" is a smoking hot bluegrass instrumental that you can't help tapping your feet and any other loose appendedge to.

From the roots of his father, Arlo Gutherie has been aming increadably timeless music, this was released over 35 years ago and it still is relevent and speaks to the concious human inside you.

The words of the music on this record still echo in my mind. They provoke thoughts about who we are as a people, who I am as an individual.

Get it, listen to it, enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars From hippie to responsible adult this has stood the test of time!.......2005-10-14

I first heard this album when I was a hippie. Now that I'm a responsible adult I get up and make coffee instead of rolling something in paper. But, somehow this is still in my music player some 30 to 40 years latter. I probly bought it 3 or 4 times over the years as it was lost, stolen, and went from LP to 8-track to CD. It is an astonishing record - deep, melodic, intelligent and oh so pretty. For anyone who enjoys Dylan, or Sheryl Crow, or anyone in between, the lyrics are profound, the instrumentation complex and powerful, the joy unavoidable.

Album Description

Long after the one-two punch of Dylan and the Beatles rendered traditional material unhip, folk's influence continued to assert itself on the airwaves, as folk-schooled artists transported the songs and sounds of the coffeehouse into a new era of musical electricity.

This collection serves as your window to a time when folk music was as much (or more) of a fixture on the pop charts as rock 'n' roll.

These tracks were all once major hits or became standards in their own right or both and every one is by the original artist.

Some have been forgotten, some were reviled by purists at the time of their release and some can still be heard on oldies stations (or around campfires) to this day. But taken together, they reveal the glorious elasticity of the folk idiom, while refuting the notion that all great folk music must necessarily be politically oriented. If these tracks don't put a smile on your face, you must have been suckled by a lemon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a Hootenanny!.......2007-07-07

If you watched the ABC Hootenanny TV show during the Sixties this CD will seem a pleasant drive down memory lane. Although only a handful were true coffee house songs, this is a nice mix of the lighter songs of folk music. These were songs that played the airways of AM radio and could be heard on top 40 stations. Listening to this made me think of the political outcries and the dreams of youth making a better world. This will appleal not only to those that joined the Peace Corp, but anyone that likes music with good melodies and light to languishing verses. A must have for any pop or folk music collector. I have collected a number of folk music CDs and this is a favorite. I highly recommend this CD.

Oh joy! Like being back in Albuquere NM in 1964-67 and listening to my beloved folk station 24/7. There are a couple of songs here from the late 50's that carried over to the 60's The sound quality is pretty good too.It doesn't have that scratchy sound that some of the music that was originally on vinyl does.If you're an old hippie or maybe just hip get this CD.Almost makes me feel like I'm 19 again!

This 59-track, triple-disc anthology was loosely inspired by Public Television's examination of the turbulent '60s. Thus its three chapters ("The Vietnam Backbeat"/"There'll Be a 'Love-In' There"/"Message & Meaning") come not only organized around historical themes rather than musical ones, but focus almost exclusively on the decade's closing, Vietnam-war dominated third. Thus the only genuine artifacts from the Beatles-led British Invasion era (the movement that arguably defined much of the decade's music in one way or another) are the Kinks' proto-metal classic "You Really Got Me," Texan Bobby Fuller's roots-rousing answer to the shaggy Englishmen then dominating the charts, "I Fought the Law." Yet there's still enough leeway within that scope to showcase the era's rich eclecticism. Indeed, "rock" is a very loose term to describe a collection that includes classic soul (The Temptations, Jr. Walker, Percy Sledge and Martha and the Vandellas), sunny pop (Tommy James, The Monkees, Association), nascent psychedelia (Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly, Strawberry Alarm Clock) and rootsy folk-rock (The Byrds, Grateful Dead). It's also a tribute to both a spirit of boundless musical possibilities and an inclusive, long-gone radio era where all of these disparate styles could and did thrive literally side-by-side. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

59 hits from the decade that put the message in music!

The '60s were the most turbulent decade of the 20th century, with the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the sexual revolution all upsetting the status quo that had settled in during the Eisenhower era. Luckily, turmoil makes for great music, and the artists of the `60s rose to the challenge by putting messages—of anger and fear, happiness and peace—into their music. The '60s Rock Explosion, a companion piece to the hit PBS special, collects some of the most memorable songs from that magical era into a blast from the past that still has the power to move us today.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the center of your mind.......2007-03-25

This CD digs pretty deep and doesn't just repeat what's on (and on and on and on!) classic rock radio stations. Good variety, good sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars I like it!.......2007-02-17

I don't like to think too much about this stuff. No over-analyzing here. When I'm cruising down the road in my Mini-Van....this music takes me away from work and other nagging issues. Good tunes. Worthy of cranking up and testing the factory speakers.

3 out of 5 stars Still waters run deep,... but not necessarily do the rapids.......2005-04-30

Ultimately a companion piece to the TV mini-series about the 60's,this collection of music treads rather familiar ground duplicated in one fashion or another on numerous other collections/compiliations (albiet with improved sound).

For the sake of brevity it is a quick way of purchasing a sampling of the mainstream music that dominated the Era, but falls way short of making any kind of definitive statement. The breakdown of the 3 cds into "themes" (ahem) is really quite arbitrary if anyone who live during that period examines the choices (frm 1960-1970 I was 8-18 yrs old, moving frm Ohio to San Francisco during the summer of love).

It seems the designers of this package emphasize Vietnam as a dominant "theme" (ahem) for at least 2 of the 3 disks...excluding other possible choices to focus on. In our age of terrorism and warfare in Iraq it seems too easy an association for convienience sake.

Other themes of equal importance (arguably), and perhaps a more interesting theme listing might include; The British Invasion, The Underground Scene, Consciousness Experimentation (non-drug), Consciousness Expansion (drug), Counter-culture kitsch, The Advent of FM radio,...to name a few. Sure, some of these tracks apply, but only in a radio friendly (MOR+AM) sense.

Nothing here really ventures into challenging territory, and if anything, challenge and confrontation were the essence of this Era besides the incense'n peppermints.
If only 1 track adventurously broke the 2-3min time restaints I'd of added a star.
Sure, I'm not expecting the full length 'Inna-godda-davita' of Iron Butterfly, but I'd a been more than thrilled with the full Chambers Brother's 'Time Has Come Today'.

Bottom line: this is The 60's Experience for the lazy. Seek and you shall find, better collections are out there. PEACE

5 out of 5 stars Superb Collection.......2005-04-21

Nobody who lived through the 60s could fail to be moved and taken back by this collection!! It seriously kicks. Both the selections and the order of presentation are excellent. I would highly recommend this set to anybody who was of high school and/or college age during the period and particularly if you were both like me. The 60s was a seriously unique time that deserves the reflection this wonderful collection evokes.

2 out of 5 stars Not full length songs.......2005-03-23

2 out of 5 stars Izz this Izz?.......2004-09-29

This is truly a disappointing release - nothing at all like the first two releases for at least the first nine tunes. What a shame! They seem to have lost most of the adventurousness that made them unique.

5 out of 5 stars Ampersand, Volume 1.......2004-06-08

The Bar Song "rocks", for this song alone this CD deserves 5 stars. But everything about this album is just incredible. I can't say enough about it. IZZ plays intensely, techincally speaking they are master musicians.

3 out of 5 stars Ampersand is a great addition to your IZZ collection.......2004-06-02

I've been waiting quite a while to get this one. It's a great addition to Sliver and I Move, but it doesn't stand alone. Ancient Memories starts off like a CSN tune, with tight vocal harmonies and acoustic guitars, but evolves into a great prog track with an awesome keyboard solo by Tom Galgano. Confusion is one of the strongest tracks and also features wonderful harmonies. Paul Bremner has a solo acoustic jazzy piece which I found to be wonderfully done, but out of place. Laura Meade takes the lead, voice and piano, on My Best Defenses, another beautiful piece that seems out of place.
Buy "I Move" and "Sliver of the Sun" first, then Ampersand. IZZ: The FUTURE OF PROG.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing new collection of songs.......2004-05-06

Plenty of us have been waiting for new material from IZZ, the best new progressive band out there. Ampersand does not disappoint. In addition to seven new songs, we also get several live tracks that display the flawless playing and amazing talent of the band. The songs have great variety to them. My personal favorite is Confusion, with it's fantastic harmonies. The Bar Song is really growing on me, with a melody I can't get out of my head.

Check it out. IZZ really has a style that is all their own. Ampersand is a must have.

    Album Description

While some artists in the `60s still stayed true to the twang, raw vocals and steel guitars typical of this genre, others went for a more pop-oriented cross over style. Featuring string ensembles and lush background voices, this new style became known as the "Nashville Sound." The Best of Classic Country: `60s gives fans of both stripes all the top Country sounds of the 1960s with 17 memorable #1 hit songs by the top artists of this decade.
