This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.

This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.

Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.

Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.

Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.

However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.

I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

    Born in 1943, David Maslanka studied composition at Oberlin and received his graduate degrees from Michigan State University where his teacher and mentor was H. Owen Reed. He has served on the faculties of the State University of New York at Geneseo, Sarah Lawrence College, and Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York. He now lives in Missoula, Montana. Maslanka has written nearly 30 major works for wind ensemble, among them five symphonies, nine concertos, a Mass, and a large variety of concert pieces. Four of the five works on this recording are world premier recordings, the one exception being Symphony No. 4, which appears on another Albany Records recording (TROY503). The Concerto for Piano, Winds and Percussion (1974-76) was Maslanka's first work for wind ensemble. The work received its premiere three years later by the Eastman Wind Ensemble conducted by Frederick Fennell. According to Maslanka, “That fine first performance opened the door to my long and happy career of writing for winds.“ Concerto No. 2 for Piano, Winds, and Percussion is in five movements - each one songlike with a programmatic backdrop. Testament was written in response to the story of Groucho Marx dancing the Charleston on Hitler's grave. To Maslanka this was “a defining moment in the 20th century…“ Traveler was written in 2003 to commemorate the career of Ray Lichtenwalter, the Director of Bands at the University of Texas at Arlington. It is based on the chorale melody Nicht so traurig, nicht so sehr (“Not so sad, not so much.“) According to Maslanka, “The roots of Symphony No. 4 are many. The central driving force is the spontaneous rise of the impulse to shout for the joy of life…“ Albany Records is proud to continue its commitment to the extraordinary music of David Maslanka.

      If Mr Ehrlich has played a false note on record I've yet to hear it. Like John Carter, Steve Lacy and Eric Dolphy, he seems to possess a musical integrity or truth where he always plays what he feels he has to - no compromises with commercial imperatives, no condescension. On this album he is paired with pianist Mr Mike Nock, who has played in some illustrious company over the past 40 years including Yusef Lateef and Coleman Hawkins, is no slouch but like his compatriot New Zealander Alan Broadbent more loved and respected by fellow musicians than by the general public. Underappreciated artists both. Five of the 13 compositions on this excellent CD are by Mr Nock, four are joint improvisations, two appear to be traditional Jewish melodies, and the remaining two are by Mr Dave Brubeck and Mr James P. Johnson respectively. Mr Ehrlich plays clarinet on five tracks, bass clarinet on two, alto sax on four and soprano on two. My personal prejudice is for the clarinet but Mr Ehrlich is master of all these instruments. A good starting point is The Duke by Mr Brubeck where the improvised clarinet solo is a model of sustained development whilst Mr Nock's piano hints at the blocked chords of its composer. The coda is not without humour. These guys are having fun too! For masterly conversation between master musicians dig Break Time or Jacanori. For music which goes beyond boundaries of classical or jazz or other labels, Three Postcards stand as a wonderful example. For quiet reflection, In The Moment, and for a humourous fillip end up with the confection Snowy Morning Blues. This is not safe music, nor is it alienating. It is a rewarding musical experience worthy of attention and focus by the listener which will pay rich dividends. It has sufficient variety, swing, and melodic beauty to make it a longtime listening companion. Recommended.

          Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
          (although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
          This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
          Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
          interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
          Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

          If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

          Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
