Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended
harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Limelight for Hugo..........2005-04-05
The modest skillful orchestrator Hugo Friedhofer spent most of his career in the shadows of his friends, film score icons Steiner and Korngold. In fact, during interviews he prefered to discuss their achievements rather than his own. John Morgan that master film score reconstructor has given us here a generous sampling of this talented neglected film composer/orchestrator. The selections span the "Golden Era", from the 1930's to mid fifties. None of this is great music, but other than the "Lodger" we're treated to some exotic instrumentation and melodic themes typical of the fables told and the locals filmed. The "Lodger" uses somber and sad elements and modern techniques to illustrate the demented Jack the Ripper. I prefer when Morgan strings together themes as in "Marco Polo", rather than the seemingly endless track by track divisions nearly always implemented not just with this composer. "Marco Polo" comes off more like an exotic tone poem. All in all, this is another well recorded project of one more valued film composer that if not undertaken would have gone down in obscurity.
Friedhofer: a good sampling.......2000-06-16
The "golden era" of Hollywood had film scores written by the likes of Rozsa, Steiner, Newman, Herrmann, and Friedhofer. Hugo Friedhofer is primarily remembered for his Academy Award winning music to THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. Most of his scores are rich orchestral masterpieces but he is not as well known as well as some of his contemporaries. Still, his music is worth a listen today.
Marco Polo continues recording music from "forgotten" film classics with commendable performances by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. This CD contains superb music from four of his earlier works: ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO -- 1937, 13 min.; THE LODGER -- 1944, 20 min.; RAINS OF RANCHIPUR -- 1955, 15 min.; SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD -- 1955, 25 min.

Mr Fox : Lost heroes of Folk/Rock.......2004-02-08
Back in the early '79s me and my mates were big fans of Strawbs. So when the Coventry music festival had Strawbs and Ralph McTell on the same bill, we got the tickets and went to the gig. Making up the numbers was some unknown quantity called 'Mr Fox'. We hadn't got a clue. Could be a band, could be some guy in an animal suit totally freaked - just about anything was possible back then.
It was a band. It was a band like nothing we'd heard. Their music was raw and told stories of the north of England: what was curious was that the stories were about the relatively recent past and the present, yet managed to be folk songs too. Beginning with a trditional coming-on style 'Join Us In Our Game'. Mr fox lead us through their warly repertoir that night. Well, Strawbs had Rick Wakeman in their lineup at that point, and McTell was McTell (in those days 'Streets of London' was still pretty neat) - Mr Fox matched them all.
'Mendle' - the missing track - was relatively overproduced for Mr Fox anc can't stand up against Carolanne Peggd later 'the Lady' Certainly the sound had changed somewhat between the two albuns, with the second having lost a little of the edginess of the first.
Bob and Carol Pegg broke up and the band ended with them. Carol released one solo album: Bob recorded two with Nick Strutt. In their way, al three albums contimued the storytelling of the original band, leaving us to wonder what might have been had the Peggs' marriage been just a little more harmoniuos. Would the sparse, raw music that was at the roots of the band have been lost to overproduction?
The only certainty is that at time when other folk-rock bands were tending to find traditional themes to modernise, Mr Fox were original and unique in the era and locality they chose to depict and in the stories they found to tell.
a local band for local people.......2002-04-09
Just a quick point- there was no NEED to remove Mendle, as the CD would still have been less than 79 mins with its inclusion. Pretty cheeky of them not to mention the ommission in the liner notes
Mr Fox were easily the equals of Steeleye Span, the Albion Band and the eternally overrated Fairport Convention (who only released 2 or 3 decent LPs)
Some news.......2002-02-24
According to AMG, THE GIPSY has been rereleased, with its lovely gatefold cover intact, on 180 gram vinyl LP in the UK. And, it contains the brilliant Carol Anne Pegg arranged song 'Mendle' (not Grendle-as was prev. noted), astoundingly left off the 2-for 1 CD.
Some Wheat, But a Good Amount of Chaff.......2001-08-10
Mr. Fox was a second-string British folk rock band that followed in the wake of Fairport Convention and The Pentangle, but never achieved the renown of those groups. There's a reason: Mr. Fox was simply not in their league, instrumentally or compositionally. This reissue of the two Mr. Fox LPs has some good songs ("Rip Van Winkle" and "Dancing Song"), but also some mediocre ones ("Elvira Madigan" is earnest singer-songwriter sap) and even some poor ones ("Aunt Lucy Broadwood" is painful to listen to). Bob Pegg's original compositions dominated the band's repertoire, but Bob's no Richard Thompson. Actually, it was his former wife, fiddler Carolanne Pegg. After the demise of Mr. Fox and the Peggs' marriage, Carolanne released a killer solo album, self-titled, that far surpassed any of the Mr. Fox music. Her record, which has been reissued on CD, is one of the great lost treasures of the rich British folk-rock movement of the late 60s - early 70s.
So much for artistic integrity..........2001-03-18
Damn them! In order to fit 2 albums onto one CD, they left off my favorite song, GRENDL! Unbelievable!

It's hard to even begin hanging musical descriptors on the late Bill Crofut. He came up during the folk boom of the 1950s and even then quietly defied tradition by setting the words of American poets such as Robert Penn Warren to banjo-inflected music, something he continued doing throughout his career with a variety of wordsmiths. Dance on a Moonbeam is his final treasure, a gift of sorts to children and their parents, delivered after Crofut's death in January 1999. Steeped in Shakespeare's words and a magical ability to weave together Renaissance-era moods and American folk music, Moonbeam exudes a warmth and soulfulness that Crofut and musical partner Chris Brubeck create with the simplest instrumentations--banjo, bass, piano, cello, and voices, mostly. Meryl Streep interjects brief readings of Shakespeare, a lovely complement to an incredible mix of Crofut's rustic folk with classically trained singers such as Dawn Upshaw, Julianne Baird, and Frederica von Stade. "Dandling Songs," "The Bear," "Simple Gifts," and "All Through the Night" alone among these 26 stellar cuts make this one of the best children's music recordings in ages. It eschews the simple means to a child's ear and instead aims for the heart and soul, which Moonbeam reaches over and over with wit and creative depths that will unfold for ages. --Andrew Bartlett

NOT classic Bill Crofut.......2002-12-23
If you really love folk music, you'll love Bill Crofut; but not this album! I grew up listening to Bill Crofut (my parents' old record is all scratched up from me dancing around in front of the record player to the Chipmunk's Day). I love his voice, I love his poetry, I love the way he plays the banjo. I was so excited to see this album now that I have a child myself. But from the moment I turned it on, I loathed it. It's too operatic (I like Opera, but not when I want to listen to folk music), and it makes the very real and down-to-earth songs sound high-faluten and just plin bad. If your're looking for some great music for your kids (even very young ones), get some Bill Crofut music...but get it with Bill singing, not these non-folk singers.
Innovative mix of folk, classical, poetry.......2002-10-16
I love what these performers have done mixing Shakespeare with folk,
classical etc. It is an especially big hit with my four year old. Kids
are much more receptive to this stuff than people give them credit
for...it's good to expose them early, when they are so open and
unhibited about the joys of music and language. Nevertheless I think
there are some valid criticisms from the other reviewers. Some songs are
more successful than others. It is hard to hear the spoken poetry (we
turn it up LOUD and then it is clear as a bell), maybe it wasn't "mixed"
properly. WE actually found that it appealed to us more and more with
repeated listenings, unlike the last reviewer (to each, his or her own).
My four year old especially loves the chipmunk song. My two year old
also loves the "Dance to your daddy" old celtic style nursery songs. The
ALleluia lullabye/carol is gorgeous (you can hear another version on the
beautiful Celtic Lullaby album). I love the selections of Shakespeare,
which stand well on their own out of context of the play and give
children an early chance to hear such lovely phrases as "we are such
stuff as dreams are made on." So I give it a four for doing all of this,
if not 100% successful, it still is pretty darn good and I hope it is
the first of many such efforts.

It is hard to hear the spoken poetry (we turn it up LOUD and then it is clear as a bell), maybe it wasn't "mixed" properly. WE actually found that it appealed to us more and more with repeated listenings, unlike the last reviewer (to each, his or her own). My four year old especially loves the chipmunk song. My two year old also loves the "Dance to your daddy" old celtic style nursery songs. The ALleluia lullabye/carol is gorgeous (you can hear another version on the beautiful Celtic Lullaby album). I love the selections of Shakespeare, which stand well on their own out of context of the play and give children an early chance to hear such lovely phrases as "we are such stuff as dreams are made on." So I give it a four for doing all of this, if not 100% successful, it still is pretty darn good and I hope it is the first of many such efforts.
Innovative mix of poetry, folk and classical.......2002-10-08
I love what these performers have done mixing Shakespeare with folk, classical etc. It is an especially big hit with my four year old. Album Description
Originally released on the Transatlantic label in 1970 and 1971 respectively, this 2 on 1 includes Mr. Fox and The Gipsy, the only two albums by the Yorkshire folk group. Castle. 2004
Album Details
Originally Released on the Transatlantic Label in 1970 and 1971 Respectively, "mr. Fox" and "The Gipsy" were the Only Albums by the Yorkshine Folk Group. Their Self-titled Debut was Recorded Vitually Live and with Very Few Overdubs. A Few Rough Edges May Be in Evidence but the Spontaneity and Drive Captures the Band's Best Live Performance. "The Gipsy" with Its Slimmed Down Line Up Offered New Opportunities for Experiments and the Track 'aunt Lucy Broadwood' Must Be the First and Only Example of English Folk Rap. Other Experimentation Can Be Found in the Tracks 'all the Good Times Are Past and Gone' and the Title Track which is a Fine Example of Storytellig Set to Music.
Customer Reviews:
The COMPLETE Mr Fox!.......2006-02-24
Although I am a big fan of late 60's/early 70's English folk-rock, I had never heard of this group before running across them on an anthology album back in 2001. I promptly went out and purchased the only available CD of their 2 albums (from 1970/71) and quickly fell in love with the edgy, deliberately primitive sound and their storytelling abilities within their songs. After writing a review of this first CD release, I then discovered through later Amazon reviews that a track had been left off. There was a song MENDEL that originally led off their second album THE GIPSY which was not included due to time constraints (or so they said). This new compilation (2004) restores the song and gives us the complete Mr. Fox in all their arcane glory and at 79 minutes you definitely get your money's worth. For those of you unfamiliar with the group, sample the title cut from their first album MR FOX along with THE GAY GOSHAWK, THE BALLAD OF NEDDY DICK and MR TRILL'S SONG to get a feel for their unique sound. From the second album THE GIPSY there's THE DANCING SONG, ALL THE GOOD TIMES, the newly restored MENDEL and their version of THE HOUSE CARPENTER to round out the picture. Along with this self contained complete set are lengthy and informative liner notes that chronicle the band's rise and fall as well as the lives of founders Bob and Carole Pegg. The remastered sound is better on this release too. If you're a fan of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, Pentangle and other British groups from this era then you owe it to yourself to become familiar with Mr Fox. You might find yourself as I did somewhat amazed and pleasantly surprised. They are true originals who deserve to be remembered and appreciated some 30 years after the fact.
At long last...........2005-01-26
we have more than a 'cheapie' release of these 2 fine albums-and the big prize is that theyve included the classic Carole Pegg dirge MENDLE.
If only they would do a full repro of THE GIPSY full gatefold wrap-around cover...
