How much banjo can one fan stand? This release should delight those five-string aficionados for whom too much plunk is never enough. Veteran virtuoso Tony Trischka enlists the services of fellow banjoists ranging from seminal inspirations (Earl Scruggs) to pupils and acolytes (Béla Fleck, Alison Brown) to wild cards (comedian Steve Martin) for a series of duets supported by stellar bluegrass musicians such as Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and members of Union Station. Most of the tracks are instrumentals, though Dudley Connelly provides vocals on traditional bluegrass standards such as "Fox on the Run" and "Live and Let Live," with Nickel Creek mandolinist Chris Thile and frequent duo partner Michael Davis teaming for harmonies on "Run Mountain." The musical interplay throughout is predictably superb, but the three cuts pairing Trischka with Fleck suggest that another extended teaming of mentor and prized student would truly be something special. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular marks acclaimed banjo innovator Tony Trischka's return to acoustic bluegrass terrain - with a unique twist. Joined by a luminous roster of fellow five-stringers, Trischka travels down the rarely-explored avenue of full-band two-banjo bluegrass. Trischka's innate gifts as a musician and arranger, coupled with his unrivaled knowledge of banjo history and technique, ensure that the performances on Double Banjo are both provocative and tasteful, ranging from tightly-reigned and harmonious to spacious and exploratory. Classically styled and dynamic, yet still finding new ways to expand timeless traditions, Double Banjo is bluegrass as only Tony Trischka can envision it.

Featured banjo players include Earl Scruggs, Steve Martin, Béla Fleck, Alison Brown, Tom Adams, Bill Emerson, Kenny Ingram, Scott Vestal, and Noam Pikelny, performing alongside Chris Thile, Dudley Connell, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Ron Stewart, Michael Daves, and more.

"A great CD! Fine picking!" -Earl Scruggs

"Tony's jovial wit and deep love of the banjo and acoustic music has infected and lifted me many times. Always a trailblazer, Tony plays the banjo like Tony Trischka. And many other people around the world would love to do the same." -Jerry Douglas

"Wow what a CD. For banjo lovers everywhere a Tony Trischka recording is high on the list of acquisitions. When you check out the list of players who join Tony on this project you realize that it is a must have. Get it right now so you can start enjoying it immediately." -Jorma Kaukonen

"I've known Tony Trischka for a long time, and I've always admired his inventiveness. Wherever he goes musically, he always keeps it interesting - and when it comes to bluegrass, he's got a right hand that just won't quit!" -Del McCoury

"I don't give out blurbs anymore!" -Steve Martin

5 out of 5 stars Snappy, innovative album with pyrotechnic five-string duets .......2007-07-15

Playing Time - 57:14 -- Are you a bluegrass fan who just can't get enough banjo? Then this is just the snappy and innovative album for you. Pyrotechnic five-string duets performed with excellent accompaniment are on the menu of Tony Trischka's "Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular." Originally from New York, Tony began picking the banjo in 1963 at age 14. One of his students, Bela Fleck, is also prominently featured on this project as both a player and tunewriter. The other nimble-fingered banjo-players in the duets include Earl Scruggs, Steve Martin, Alison Brown, Tom Adams, Scott Vestal, Noam Pikelny, Kenny Ingram and Bill Emerson. Quick-paced romps give way to bright and breezy grooves with all of the standard bluegrass instruments getting a piece of the action. The guitar breaks from David Grier, Kenny Smith and Tony Rice are especially noteworthy, although I found it interesting that Grier's were isolated rather far right in the stereo mix. A few vocal bluegrass numbers provide some changes in the disc's overall musical mood. Dudley Connell sings lead on "Fox on the Run" and "Live and Let Live." Lou Reid or Sally Love provide some backing vocals. Michael Daves sings on "Run Mountain."

At almost nine minutes in length, Twilight Kingdom begins with melodious interplay between Trischka and Fleck before being infused with added hustle four minutes into the piece that is one of six songs that Trischka wrote or co-wrote on the project. They also collaborate on the project's leanest arrangement, "Armando's Children," written by Bela. From the repertoire of Jim Eanes and The Shenandoah Boys, the album closes with Steve Martin and Tony Trischka in the drivers' seats for "Plunkin' Rag" (aka "Ridin' the Waves") in which the two pickers provide harmony with their Scruggs tuners. Don't try that at home without the ability to overdub! This is a top notch, expressive production that shows how much adoration the banjo is deserving of. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Banjo Rules.......2007-06-08

This cd has the best selection of banjo songs out there, as well as different styles played by different artists. This cd includes Earl Scruggs playing Farewell Blues, Tom Adams playing Fox on the Run, Bela Fleck playing Twilight Harbor, and many more. Definitely buy.

5 out of 5 stars Escher's Waltz.......2007-06-05

Escher's Waltz----Amazing. Loved the whole album.
This guy has it all. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I was a grinnin' while they were a pickin'........2007-05-30

I saw Steve Martin on the Dave Letterman show and was stunned at how well he played the banjo. It was a selection from this CD which Steve had written. I immediately ordered the CD and have enjoyed it almost daily since it arrived. If you like banjo pickin', this is as close to heaven as it gets. Tony was Bela Fleck's mentor and I had seen Bela Fleck live and immediately bought his CD. This has some real talent. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Martin does it again!.......2007-05-25

Great upbeat bluegrass! Steve Martin is the reason I bought this CD, but the other performances are also top notch!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Banjo Players.......2007-06-08

First heard this on the Elektra release many years ago. Fine contrast between the melodic style and the older, more traditional Scruggs style of banjo picking. If you are just learning or an expert, this album bears repeat listening for inspiration. You too can play like this, if you just practice enough. Excellent mixing and if you adjust the balance on your old stereo you can isolate the dueling banjos. As an old picker, I would say this is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the Best CD I own.......2007-04-03

I bought this CD based on the movie sound track and have discovered that it is probably one of the best banjo CD's out there. I highly recommend this CD for anyone even remotely interested in banjo music.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Blast From The Past.......2007-03-27

Many a neophyte banjo player in the 1960's wore out their original Elektra produced LP of "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass" by Eric Weisberg and Marshall Brickman. The first widely disseminated demonstrations of "melodic style" banjo as differentiated from the traditional three finger "Scruggs Style" banjo were found on those wonderful vinyl tracks. Now this reissue is available with the bonus of the Dueling Banjos title cut. That perfomance helped to catapult the banjo into a yet higher level of music appreciation world-wide. For banjo players, this is a "must have" album. The pioneering melodic work of Eric Weisberg and Marshall Brickman are now preserved for the the next generation of 5-string banjo pickers. If you don't have yours yet, get one now. These digital grooves will last longer than my old LP.

4 out of 5 stars Dueling Banjos.......2007-03-19

Getting the original theme song from the movie Deliverance is worth it all by itself. The rest is really good pickin' stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Deliverance Soundtrack.......2007-01-12

This is by far the best traditional bluegrass album ever created. Many times bluegrass albums add instruments such as piano drums. Personally I like a tradional bluegrass band that includes banjo, guitar, bass, fiddle, mandolin and even dobro. This CD has this. The banjo playing makes for a fun, bouncing lead that truly drives the music. The fiddle adds a driving almost haunting sound. The guitar and bass add a strong yet musically exciting backdrop to the entire repertoire. Being a bluegrass banjo and guitar player myself, I highly recommend this CD if you are looking for straight-forward traditional bluegrass music.

Despite a painfully short running time of 25 minutes, this 1961 landmark remains one of the most important and influential banjo albums ever made. Released at the height of the folk boom, these 12 instrumentals inspired countless college kids to pick up a five-string banjo and try to emulate the great Earl Scruggs's spectacular three-finger attack. Paul Warren's fiddle and Josh Graves's Dobro keep pace with the master, who creates a template for bluegrass banjo. Although there are more definitive and comprehensive Flatt & Scruggs collections available, Foggy Mountain Banjo will always be a perennial favorite thanks to its original timely release and, of course, the timeless music within. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Can I say this?.......2007-04-19

This is BAR NONE, the best 5-string banjo instrumental album ever recorded.

This is one of those rare albums where you can go five years between listens, and every time you hear it again, the first thing out of your mouth is, "This is still the best there ever was. It's as good now as it was the first time I heard it."

5 out of 5 stars Earl Scruggs: History's Most Imitated Musician.......2006-12-01

It is absolutely mind boggling when you stop to consider that out of the total number of Banjos being made in the last 50 years, how large a percentage were 5 String models; and also how large a percentage were and will be played 3 finger style, as opposed to the older folk styles of "clawhammer"; "frailing"; "drop-thumb".
It can all be traced back to one man: Earl Scruggs, a soft spoken, humble North Carolina gentleman whose playing was anything but soft spoken! Earl has left his proverbial fingerprints on the musical aspirations of the 5 string banjoists for literally generations to come. When it comes to tone and taste, nobody can lay it down like Earl. This album was recorded at the height of their popularity, captured in Columbia's Nashville studio, with audiophile results. The Foggy Mountain Boys' masterful accompaniment, from Lester Flatt's beautifully understated, but powerful guitar; Paul Warren's solid fiddle; Buck "Josh" Graves' equally groundbreaking Dobro; and Jake Tullock's rock-solid, precise, upright bass made this album an absolute neccessity for anyone interested in Bluegrass music. Another recommended instrumental tour de force by Flatt & Scruggs was their 1966 album "Stricly Instrumental-with Doc Watson", together these 3 master musicians sound as if they played together all their lives; and they each considered it one of the most enjoyable recording sessions they'd ever done in their career.
It shows in their playing on every cut.
One by one, almost all of the band members passed on, but Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson still represent the pinnacle of this music. Though both men are now in their 80's they have lost none of their dynamics nor their technique. I hope they both live to be 100....they will still inspire us.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best.......2006-08-18

These boys are some of the great pickers of all time!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for banjo pickers, great for bluegrass fans.......2006-07-02

The sound of bluegrass music is so elemental and raw that it feels like it's been around forever. Surprisingly, it's not much older than rock 'n' roll; the first true bluegrass star, Earl Scruggs, is getting way up there but as of mid-summer 2006 was still alive and giggin'.

"Foggy Mountain Banjo" could well be the most important recording ever for banjo fans and - perhaps more importantly - banjo pickers. "The Essential Earl Scruggs" offers a much better overview of Scruggs' career, but this disc features many of Scrugs's most important compositions and arrangements (the famed Foggy Mountain Breakdown is NOT on the disc, but every banjo noob's first song - Cripple Creek - is here in all its glory, as are Groundspeed, Cumberland Gap and Fireball Mail).

Rip this disc and slow it down, and you hear how essentially simple Scruggs's left hand (fretboard) fingering is, and how deceptively difficult his right hand (picking) movements are. The right hand is everything with Scruggs; banjo players study every note. Since this disc was recorded a lot of pickers have come forth whose left hands are as busy as their right, producing more complex and considerably more melodic breaks (listening to Don Reno, JD Crowe, Bill Keith, Tony Trischka, Bela Fleck and Jens Kruger is a good way to understand the progression of the instrument). But each of these later players owes it all to Scruggs and the sound he created.

This disc puts mid-career Scruggs front and center, so fans of more modern bluegrass bands might find it somewhat lacking. The tunes aren't complex and the arrangements are simple. At the time this music was recorded the bluegrass guitar was considered purely a rhythm instrument; Lester Flatt was of course the master of bluegrass rhythm playing but there are no flatpicking breaks for guitar players to marvel at. Essentially, lead on this album swaps between banjo and fiddle - there's only minimal dobro and no mandolin. Because only two instruments are stepping out and trading lead, the songs tend to be short - 2:27 is the longest of the dozen songs on the disc.

Anyone learning to pick a banjo needs this disc in their collection - it's a primer on how it's done (no less a player than Tony Trischka will tell you that). For fans of traditional bluegrass, it's an essential. And for those interested in the more modern forms of the evolving art of bluegrass, it's as important a disc as exists. Everything comes from here.

With ample doses of talent, spirit, and charisma, Flatt and Scruggs rose to the popular peak of the bluegrass heap during their 17-year association with Columbia. With Lester Flatt's casual vocal style and Earl Scruggs's groundbreaking banjo technique, the Foggy Mountain Boys brought bluegrass into the country mainstream more so than either Bill Monroe or the Stanley Brothers. Disc one picks up where the legendary Mercury recordings left off. High-powered originals such as "Come Back Darling," "Head Over Heels," "Til the End of the World Rolls Round," and "I'll Never Shed Another Tear" add to their classic repertoire, while the spectacular instrumental rags and breakdowns showcase Scruggs's banjo prowess. Disc two finds the pair diversifying their portfolio, as it were, with readings of popular television themes and covers of everyone from the Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, and Johnny Cash to John Sebastian, Bob Dylan, Tom T. Hall, and even Shel Silverstein. --Marc Greilsamer

All I can say is, if this were and old vinyl LP, I would have worn through it by now. These 2 CDs are my most played of the stack of bluegrass CDs lying around my home and car.

5 out of 5 stars Best Domestic Set Available of Their Most Popular Recordings.......2003-05-01

Over 30 years after their breakup, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs remain the most famous band to emerge from bluegrass. Brought together in Bill Monroe's band in 1945, they left three years later to form their own band - the Foggy Mountain Boys - and sign with Mercury Records.

While their Mercury recordings (1948 - 1950) are held in higher esteem critically, Flatt & Scruggs' work for Columbia (1951 - 1968) was far more popular at country radio. Disc one contains their most pure bluegrass offerings, such as "Tis Sweet To Be Remembered," "Cabin In The Hills," and "Crying My Heart Out Over You." Lester's easy going, high tenor voice is the featured "instrument" on these recordings.

Disc two finds Flatt & Scruggs at their commercial peak, led by their 1962 chart-topping theme for The Beverly Hillbillies. This smash led to several appearances on the show (including a performance of "Pearl, Pearl, Pearl," their top-ten ode about Jethro Bodine's mother) as well as the Petticoat Junction theme assignment (a top 20 hit). These recordings featured Earl's extraordinary "three-finger-banjo" accompaniment far more prominently.

Flatt & Scruggs' top 20 toetapper "California Uptight Band" (not included on 16 GREATEST HITS) and the 1967 remake of their "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" (originally cut for Mercury in 1949 and repopularized in the film Bonnie & Clyde) conclude this set on a high note. In 1969, the duo split up due to differences over musical direction. Flatt's death in 1979 would end any chance of a reunion.

This 34-track, double-disc set captures all of Flatt & Scruggs' charting singles and most choice album tracks from the Columbia years and is the best domestic collection available. For a more extensive look at this period, check out the THREE box sets from Germany's Bear Family Records.

5 out of 5 stars What Fun!.......2003-03-15

4 out of 5 stars Vicar of Dibley Anniversary Collection.......2006-11-10

I have to admit that I am slightly disappointed in this DVD. I love the Vicar and after quite sometime still laugh at the lines from the regular shows, but this collection does not have the same feel or rhythm. Something is off.

They are enjoyable and to those who love the Vicar of Dibley I recommend adding this to your collection but be prepared....it is not quite the same as the old shows.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bela Fleck CD of All.......2006-07-17

Bela Fleck pioneered the fusion of bluegrass and jazz. I don't know of anyone else out there who has more effectively combined these two highly disparate art forms.

This CD, though, is the best one he has done to date. The title track is just so-so, but almost all of the others are just amazing for sheer jazz energy and virtuousity. If this CD would be your first exposure to this music, you're geting the best of all right up front.

2 out of 5 stars I don't want to enter a title........2006-04-27

I'm not sure if other people have had this problem, but the copy I received is so full of flaws as to be pretty much unlistenable. It almost sounds like someone took a needle and just scratched out a few seconds every minute or so; it's full of blips and gaps. At several points on the second track the music just cuts off for a full 15 seconds. As for the parts which are actually still there, musically it's great, like everything else from this group; there are the expected odd time signatures, creative melodies, and impressive basslines, but this disc itself seems to be one of the most damaged I own, and it's brand new. You ripped me off, Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars I scratched my first cd and quickly went out to buy another.......2006-02-16

This is one of the best CDs the Flecktones have put out. This has to be one of the most interesting mixes of musicians I have heard to date. Not only do they work well together, the music played on here stretches the boundaries of modern music with so many injections of different genres, some of which I wouldn't even know how to classify.

I first got into the Flecktones because of Victor Wooten. This stuff was so odd from the start that I really didn't know how to take it. Boy did it grow on me! All the thought that was put into each song is very evident...from Howard Levy using a paper cup to muffle his harmonica on the track "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" to the patriotic rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" that may leave you standing with your chest in the air. This is modern music done in a way many havn't heard before...the Flecktone way.

Very progressively refreshing stuff!

5 out of 5 stars A Flight of Fleck Finery and a Flecktone Favorite.......2003-01-02

How can I describe this genre bending CD. Five stars isn't enough, I can tell you that. Not a bad track on here at all.
Is this 'Funk-grass' or 'Jazz-grass' or 'New-Grass'????? Defies definition and therefore satisifies the longing for superb music.
Buy it you won't be disappointed. Wonderful rendition of the Beatles 'Michelle'... excellent re-tooling of our National Anthem ... super version of Star of the County Down...marvelous original compositions as well.
Why haven't you heard more of Fleck?
American Radio only seems to cater to the mediocre ... Fleck is not.

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer take a convincing step forward on their third release, which at various times echoes the music of Robin and Linda Williams and a twangy version of Richard and Linda Thompson. Although gifted on banjo, guitar, fiddle, organ, and mandolin, the duo has placed a premium on the songwriting, with considerable payoff. "Tillman Co." details the ordinary terrors of rural working-class life, "Gentle Arms of Eden" evokes a mystical gospel vision, and "Ordinary Town" offers one of the best opening lines heard this year--"Common cool, he was a proud young fool in a kick-ass Wal-Mart tie"--and then somehow sums up the mysteries of small-town life. Now and again, the philosophical trappings can feel rather starched and pretentious, abetted in part by Carter's penchant for faux-Shakespearean syntax and imagery--"Hail the wayward werewolf howlin' / Haints and shades and goblins growlin'" is one such clumsy exertion--but the overriding musical and lyrical eloquence makes Drum Hat Buddha one of the more original Americana releases of the year. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be Confused by the Title.......2006-08-18

It seems like this album has a rather odd title and some people might wonder what type of music this is; one might think "new age" given the title it has. I guess it is classified as folk music. Whatever you call it, it's great music and both Grammer and Carter have smooth, beautiful voices. What a bonus to get two great artists on one album! Too bad there are only 12 songs, running just over 40 minutes; the album is over way too soon. It's a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. I am always skeptical when I see all 4 and 5 stars reviews, but this album certainly deserves the high ratings.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable music. Warning: Very addicting! .......2006-07-19

I wholeheartedly agree with all the other reviewers who gave this CD 5 stars! If it were possible I would give it more. I was a friend of Dave's back in the early 1970's. I first met Dave during the fall semester, 1970 at the Univ. of Oklahoma. He lived across the hall from me in the Worcester House dorm. The first day of classes I heard acoustic guitar sounds from his room and that caused me to sit up and take notice. I became acquainted with him and I used to go to see him play at coffeehouses and other live music events around the OU campus. Because we both liked folk music we became good friends. He was a great conversationalist. I would love to sit at the local coffee shop and drink a cup of Joe and listen to him talk about music and other topics. He was really one of the most unique individuals I have ever met. One thing I remember about him is that he used to pull me in his room to use me as a guinea pig to try out his new songs. This was always a fun experience and I remember they were amazing songs. I had a few favorites that do not appear on any of his CD's. I used to think to myself... "this guy is going to make it someday!. Due to career moves and other factors, I lost track of him in 1978. Through the years I often wondered where he was, what he was doing, and if he had "made it" in the music world. Fast forward to June 2006 when sadly, I learned of the crushing news of his passing. I was also amazed to see that he had three CD's on amazon.com with such unbelievable reviews! I rushed out to hear the music and get caught up. After listening to this CD and the first two, my impression is that this CD is totally awesome! Dave really perfected his craft through the years and it really shows here. He picked a musical partner in Tracy Grammer that is absolutely first rate and the perfect complement to his musical style. Not only an amazing fiddle player, her vocals are equally as amazing. Her fiddle lines give just the right touch, ... perfect! By the way, is it obvious that I am blown away by this music? My favorites tunes are "Gentle Arms of Eden" ( a masterpiece... period.), "Merlin's Lament" (haunting! So cool!), and "The Mountain" (off an earlier CD Tanglewood Tree)I can see why Joan Baez picked this one to do in concert! It blew me away!) This music is so enchanting... so addicting, I am totally in awe. Not only did my friend Dave make it, he totally surpassed all my expectations! The musicianship is as amazing as the melodies and songwriting. Vocals are just amazing throughout. I can't conjure up the right adjectives to describe this. I consider myself fortunate to have known Dave when he was a struggling musician and I am glad he has the loyal following he so justly deserves. I hope he is looking down seeing all this from above. He was a great guy and a great friend. I miss him. UPDATE: 10/27/06 Saw Tracy in concert and she dedicated a song to me, Crocodile Man from Tanglewood Tree. I am more addicted to this music than ever with the release of "Seven is the Number" Dave and Tracy's last CD together. This music will endure forever.

5 out of 5 stars It's sad that there is no more.......2005-10-29

I found myself craving Dave Carter music the other day. I turned of course to the cds that i have of his (and Tracy Grammer), Drum Hat Buddha being one of them. These songs still resonate with me today. I guess that they always will. I love his simple yet heartfull way of singing. He's like Bob Dylan in the sense that they prove that one doesn't need a great big voice, or to 'oversing', to sing, and connect. It is such a great blend, Dave's tiny crackly voice with Tracy's big sweet voice. I love it. I love the color, and imagery in all of the songs, but I like most of all the way he puts words and melodies together. They seem like timeless children's songs that somehow are new and fresh....and deep. It's sad that there is no more with Dave Carter's untimely passing a few years ago. He and Tracy were just starting to "get hot", at least in the Folk community. But this cd is a definite keeper, as well as all of the others. I love Tanglewood Tree as well. I still listen to this music years late, and it just proves that his music is sweet and will be forever.

5 out of 5 stars The best CD I own (besides their other two!).......2005-04-24

Roy Kasten (Amazon.com review) has it ALL wrong when he writes about Dave Carter's "clumsy exertion" and "faux Shakespearean syntax" - It is EXACTLY those moments when Carter is playing with language that make all three of his and Tracy Grammer's CDs pulse with life. You can be listening to a song for the 20th time and all of a sudden a phrase like "they would...dip and spin and skate the wind like feathers" (Annie's Lover - W.I.G) or "the sand in your teeth grindin' tiny white diamonds to moments of loss that you cannot explain" (41 Thunderer) hits you and you find yourself with a lump in your throat. And there are a hundred more where those came from. In addition, even beyond the sound of the language, and his deft use of alliteration and onomatopoeia, Carter intentionally merges the sacred with both natural images and profane ones (Gentle Soldier of My Soul/Farewell to Saint Dolores [T.T]), or the mythical with the literal (Merlin's Lament/Lancelot [W.I.G]. I am on my third copy of this CD because I keep wearing it out (and When I Go and Tanglewood Tree are getting just as worn - they are the three CDs that never come out of my car's player). If you love the sound of language, love to play with it and twist and shape it in new ways, then Dave Carter is your man. And kudos to his brave partner, Tracy Grammer, for carrying on his legacy!

5 out of 5 stars If it's possible to have a favorite Dave Carter CD...........2005-01-20

This one's it. What can you say about a collection that includes "Gentle Arms of Eden" which was chosen as a Unitarian hymn, to "41 Thunderer" an anthem to a Colt repeater. It's eclectic, it's amazing, and it's beautiful. Give this CD a listen, but you might as well buy the other two Dave and Tracy CDs along with this one. I guarantee you will be hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Raymond's seminal material cut in 1963 at a radio station in Moncks Corner, S.C........2007-01-02

Playing Time - 47:17 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.

One artist who owes a great deal to Rural Rhythm is Raymond Fairchild. For Rural Rhythm, this album by Fairchild was originally put out in 1963. It's one of his earliest releases. It was originally called "King of the Smokey Mountain Banjo" album (RR-146) and is given the highest marks. Known as the "31 tune album," some even thought it was too long. An additional album by the same name (RR-254) was subsequently released about six years later by the label. Only three cuts were different. It was unclear why Rural Rhythm had done this, but the speculation was that the earlier release had gone out of print. Those 31 songs are the material on this CD.

Fairchild's pleasant banjo album of mostly old standards included backing by Red White's Dixie Bluegrass Boys (Buck Duncan, Roy Mull, Tommy Rodgers). A reissue entitled "31 Banjo Favorites--Volume II" by Raymond Fairchild was issued on CD in 1999 as RHY-268. Based on a 1999 interview with Barry Willis (author of "America's Music: Bluegrass"), Fairchild shares some recollections about his early days of recording for Rural Rhythm. Dobro-player Clarence Jackson had recorded "Houndog Dobro" (RR-130) and "Bluegrass Special" (RR-132) for the label, and it was Jackson that produced Fairchild's first album for Rural Rhythm. "He come to Maggie Valley," recalls Fairchild, "and told me about that company. I was workin' on Ghost Town, in Maggie Valley. After the season, I got in touch with `em. We cut it then. Roy Mull was on rhythm guitar, Tommy Rodgers was on fiddle, Red White was on rhythm guitar and Bud Duncan was on bass, and me on banjo. It was a little ol' radio station and a reel-to-reel tape recorder. It was Moncks Corner, SC. We worked on it a couple of nights."

When asked why he had two rhythm guitars and no mandolin, Raymond replied, "Well, I don't know the story now, but it seems to me that Mull might have been a little weak. And Red White, he was around, and we figured that two might fill out my pickin' a little better, you know. I very seldom use a mandolin.

Full of boundless energy and determination, his albums demonstrated a multitude of banjo techniques on plain ol' country picking, fiddle tunes, standard bluegrass, old country and gospel. The volume of material being released at the time made it nearly impossible to give it all the attention it normally would have received. Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. It's an immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes. Some should be revived by today's bands. Don't expect to hear vocals, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass instrumental sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars good banjos.......2003-07-31

Although I had not heard of Raymond fairchild, i was impressed with his style, had some good blue grassy tracks and the picking was great

4 out of 5 stars Maybe not perfect.....but what is??.......2003-03-23

To put it simply, Mr. Fairchild is awesome. I have had the privelege of seeing Mr. Fairchild in concert many times and it is always a humbling experience for aspiring banjo players like myself. To be dismissive of Mr. Fairchild's obvious talent, like a previous reviewer called it "gimmicky", is ridiculous. It is obvious that the reviewer is unable to simulate the style of this guy. I agree that the genius of Scruggs and Crowe is well known and they are considered "tasteful", but the "Scruggs" style is also a very simple one to emulate. I find it much easier to tabulate a "Break" by Crowe or Scruggs and to pick it out than to try and play a tune like Mr. Fairchild plays it. You just can't do it without having the talent to back it up. While a certain amount of showmanship is included in Mr. Fairchild's recordings and live-shows, it is the banjo playing that keeps me coming back for more. This CD is not perfect however, the sound leaves a little to be desired in comparison to todays releases, bear in mind this CD was recorded in the 1960's and the mix is weak at times. Also the back-up musicians are not of the caliber that Mr. Fairchild tours with now, but over-all,it provides a raw and true picture of an awesome talent displayed by Mr. Fairchild. More recent CD's by Fairchild such as "Lil Zane" and others, are more polished, so if you are obsessed with a polished product, check some of those out, but if you just like hearing a master at work, buy this CD and look past the imperfections and you will "see" what I "hear". It's not a "gimmicky" sound at all, but an awesome display of a true master that is in complete control of his instrument. If you don't believe me, just try and copy one of his tunes!! Better yet, go catch one of his live performances, where he really shines, and you will have no doubt of his standing of one of the true "elite" banjo players of our day.

5 out of 5 stars musical delight.......2003-03-18

I love bluegrass and love listening to the humming banjo. I had never heard of raymond fairchild, but soon fell in love with his amazing fingers. after listening to this back to back twice, I ended up buying several more CD's of his music.

3 out of 5 stars For banjo history buffs..........2003-01-20

Raymon Fairchild belongs to an exclusive group of super pickers that Bela Fleck has credited with providing inspiration for his own work. Fairchild's picking is raw and fast, and his sound is straight from the mountains. Listening to Fairchild and his unique 3-fingered style is a little like watching a Ken Burns documentary- like finding a missing piece of a puzzle- you'll begin to see the whole picture in the history of the 5 string banjo.
These recordings vary in quality from poor to fair, but each seems faithful to the original.

The Dillards combine accomplished picking and harmonizing with a forward-looking approach to bluegrass. These 28 songs follow them from 1963's tradition-based quartet to 1965's fiddle-soaked instrumental virtuosity to open-minded country rock. In a way, their progression makes perfect sense: With their Ozark Mountain upbringing as the foundation, the Dillards absorbed a variety of influences from their new big-city home. The early quartet-with guitarist/vocalist Rodney Dillard, amazing banjo picker Doug Dillard, and mandolinist Dean Webb-offer rousing gospels, a Dylan cover, and classic folk and bluegrass originals such as "The Old Home Place." Fiddler Byron Berline joins the fray in 1965 for potent hot-picking displays. Their later work, featuring Herb Pedersen, adds drums, pedal steel, electric guitar, and even orchestras. Few bands balance the past and the future as successfully. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars The Dillards are Darlings!.......2007-01-16

I wanted this CD as kind of a novelty; I thought it would be neat to have some of the songs I'd heard on The Andy Griffith Show. I am so pleased with the entire CD! The Dillards have a much broader range than I expected, including their own versions of a couple of Beatles songs. I enjoy listening to it for the pure musicianship and precision in the instrumental arrangements.

4 out of 5 stars Dillards.......2006-11-10

Great collection from the Dillards from the 60's on. Very nice cross section of their music.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-03-30

I learned of the Dillards from the Andy Griffith show and loved them, but this album is much better than I anticipated. These guys are great at picking and singing. The second half of the CD is great because Mitch introduces songs with some great dialogue. This is better than the first time live because Mitch seems much more relazed and much funnier in his talks.
This is a must buy if you love the Dillards, it is a must buy if you love bluegrass, hey - if you love music, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough about this album..........2005-12-10

I absolutely love The Dillards and There Is A Time is one of the best albums I've ever owned. It covers most of their more popular songs and then some. It's a must have for any bluegrass fan. Trust me,you will not be disappointed with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2004-10-06

This is a marvelous collection. Along with "High Atmosphere", I consider it essential to orient you to the way the music really sounded. Most people come to Old Time music from some place else...bluegrass, country, or one of the great modern oddities like Old Crow Medicine Show or The Bad Livers. Perhaps you got the bug from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". Well, you're on the right path with this very big 2 CD collection that not only has achingly beautiful a'capella balads, red hot fiddling, and some really phenomenal banjo work, but also haunting church shape note singing. Get "High Atmosphere" as well, and once you've absorbed them, branch out from there.

5 out of 5 stars OLD TIME MUSIC.......2003-04-21

GREAT CD. THE CD CASE IS KIND OF DUMB, BECAUSE IT LIST THE ARTISTS AND TRACK NO. ON WHICH THEY PERFORM, INSTEAD OF THE ARTIST AND THEN THE SONG. THE SONGS ARE WRITTEN ON THE CD LABEL THOUGH. STILL A GREAT CD. VINTAGE SONGS, VINTAGE STYLE

4 out of 5 stars The hills were alive!.......2003-03-16

Having just reviewed another of John Cohen's excellent collections (High Atmosphere) yesterday, this seemed like a natural choice for today. This was recorded in 1959.

Obviously the biggest "star" here is Roscoe Holcomb. He is the one person on this 2-disc set who is the most well-known to the largest number of people, but this is by no means a one-man collection. In fact, I don't even consider Roscoe to be the best musician present here. For the life of me I still cannot figure out why Bill Cornett's name isn't thrown around as "one of the greats". His voice and banjo playing, particularly on Pretty Polly, Old Reuben, Born In Kentucky, Sweet Willie, etc... just knock me out. Born In Kentucky being a variant of the more well-known tune, Dark Holler.

J.D. Cornett has a fine solo-vocal version of Spring of '65, and you do indeed get some fine stuff from Roscoe here in case he is your main focus. From bits of Jack-A-Roe to one of his "I made it myself" tunes where he then lifts an entire lyric from a Blind Lemon Jefferson tune, though neither he nor the liner-notes make mention of this. Plus, I will take Roscoe's Wayfaring Stranger over Bill Monroe's any day of the week. All in all, it's good stuff!

Moving on, I personally am not too much for the sets of church tunes, aside from Clap & Shout on disc two. However, there are alot of jewels in the sand of disc two. The highlights of disc two, for me, come in the form of Granville Bowlin's segment, Mrs. Sams solo-vocal Wagoners Lad, James Crase's various fiddle tunes, and Lee Sexton's solo banjo St. Louis Blues and his Pretty Polly that is rather closely related to Bill Cornett's but not as powerful. I just love Mrs. Sams' voice. Everyone has their own aesthetic of what is good and what isn't, and for me, Mrs. Sams is just exactly what a wise old female mountain singer should sound like.

There is such a richness and rugged individuality to all these performances that it just breaks your heart to know that for the most part, these traditions are gone. At least we were lucky enough to have someone like John Cohen roaming the hills and making these priceless recordings for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars This is excellent.......2002-05-10

This CD set takes you into a world of simple but hard labor, soul crushing poverty and soul liberating music. Its historically and musically important. A must for banjo players who have an interest in the evolution of how the instrument is played.

When blind singer/guitarist Arthel "Doc" Watson was "discovered" by folklorist Ralph Rinzler in 1960 he sounded as though he'd been picking for a hundred years, not to mention the fact that his huge repertoire of old songs seemed like it could go on for days. Watson had actually been playing in a honky-tonk band when Rinzler came across him in Deep Gap, North Carolina. When he asked Doc to set down his electric guitar he created one of the first--and most lasting--stars of the folk revival. Ashley was already a mountain music legend himself when he cut these front-porch sessions; picking a fine banjo and singing along on one standard--like "Shady Grove" and "Peg and Awl"--after another. --Michael Ruby

Album Description

With 20 previously unreleased performances, many rare photos, and producer Ralph Rinzler's comprehensive notes, this is the definitive collection of two earlier volumes entitled Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's. These LP's introduced the world to Doc Watson and played an important role in the folk revival of the '60s. Featured are Gaither Carlton, Clint Howard, Fred Price, Jack Burchett, and others. Compiled by Ralph Rinzler, Matt Walters and Jeff Place. Annotated by Ralph Rinzler. "Soul pours out of these unschooled folk musicians..." -- SF Chronicle

3 out of 5 stars Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson Folkways 1960-1962.......2007-07-30

This CD collection is on the okay status with me. It is not a very good viewing of either of these gentlemen. It makes both of them look and sound like not good entertainers when they really are. There are also alot of older 1920's songs on here that were re-worded and were smashed to smitharines. I would not recommend this to anyone and besides to me it is to modern in musical ways also. Bad example of both of them.

5 out of 5 stars American Music for the Desert Island.......2004-08-26

These recordings with Doc & Clarence Ashley are as good as American folk/old-time music gets. And the performances are truly timeless -- it could've been 1910 or 1960 or 2010. When you've had it with flash-in-the-pan, here-today-forgotten-tomorrow dreck that's on eMpTV and the radio, then put on this disk & enjoy the music.

3 out of 5 stars Clarence Ashley/Doc Watson Review.......2003-12-18

I'm a big Doc Watson fan and was expecting more vocals from Doc. The CD featured more Ashley and less Doc than I expected. I was somewhat disappointed. If you're buying this CD because your an Ashley fan then I'd think that you'll find it satisfying. On the other hand, if you're getting it because you want to hear Doc, then you may be less than satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, fun, wonderful.......2002-08-20

I've owned these recordings first as records, then as tapes, and now as CDs since they came out in the early 1960s. After 40 years, they are still fresh, fun, and fantasic, they make me want to pick up my guitar and my banjo and pick behind them. You will find that there is a slight overlap in the cds compared with the original versions of the records. More tunes and more players are on here, particularly banjo players, than on the original records, and some tunes that were on the original recordings under this title now appear on Smithsonian Folkways' new version of the Watson Family. All and all, I couldn't think of the last 40 years of my life without these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars A revelation.......2001-04-12

This is one of the most amazing sets of recordings that I have ever heard. I listen to a fairly wide range of jazz and classical (Ellington to Ayler, Bach to Ligeti) but have only recently begun listening to old-time folk. The intimacy, clarity of sound and creativity of these recordings might be matched elsewhere, but they cannot be surpassed. The musicianship is quite incredible - I wish I did anything as well as these gentlemen play their instruments. Each song sends shivers down my spine. It is disturbing to consider how few people will hear this album. Order it now & become one of the blessed few.
