Delightful!.......2000-09-06
Delightful harmony with slightly corny lyrics at times. All original.
The Chenille Sisters at their best!.......1999-04-08
What a treat for all ages! The harmony and humor of these selections will have you listening to this CD over and over.
Chenille 101 - for Fans Old & New!.......1998-09-27
The Chenille Sisters of Ann Arbor have wooed fans at festivals, in coffeehouses, on NPR and PBS. Their act is at once retro and modern - often updating oldies like "Please, Mr. Postman" and "Blowin' in the Wind" with distinctly '90s lyrics. Whether swingin' on a classic "Low Gravy," crooning an original ballad "Plastic Roses" -- the Chenilles deliver lush melodies and tight harmonies. Best of all - they seem to be having a LOT of fun! (Their live performances and eclectic catalog prove it.)

More great Chenilles.......2002-07-12
The Chenilles' latest will not disappoint their fans. The songs have enough in common with their earlier efforts to remind you what you love about them, but they're different enough to justify there being a new disc.
On first hearing, I liked this album a little less than some of their others, but after a while I find I like it more. As always, the harmonies are delightful. They combine a jazzy 50s sound and texture with modern subject matter.
The lyrics are not great poetry, but they're thoughful. If "About Happiness" doesn't make you cry a little you've lived a life very different from mine. At bottom, I think, that's what I like about the Chenilles--their songs are not about the trite excesses of the youth culture, instead they remind you of feelings worth feeling. They manage to be both tuneful and thoughtful.
Super Sweet Harmonies.......2002-04-21
The harmonies are honey sweet. Their 3 voices meld perfectly together.
I wish I could say the same for their songwriting. The lyrics themselves are straight up and forthright with little embellishment or simile.
While these gals have most excellent voices their own songs are not quite ready for prime time. The songs on this disc vary seem to be written from either the "Mother with Kids" or "Single & Looking" viewpoints. The only gems on the disc are written by other folks & you can hear the difference.
I bet the Chenille Sisters are great live but their probable stage presence doesn't translate on the CD.
I'd skip this one unless you're a fan.

So much fun!.......1999-08-17
My 3 year old and I borrowed this cd from the library and LOVED IT! The "Noodle" song is super (please don't call it "pasta!"). I'm patiently waiting for this cd to be released again!!!
Hands down the most incredible children's CD on the planet!.......1999-05-05
I popped the CD in the car stereo and watched my eight-month old son start dancing in his car seat to the beat of the Title song. What fun! The music brought the most amazing look of excitement and joy to his entire face! Whenever we begin to clap the beat of The Locomotion, his eyes light up and his feet start to kick. I renewed it half a dozen times before the library said it was on reserve. :( I need a copy! I want to give it to every new mother I know so that they can experience the pure joy and delight my husband and I have; and the fun that the Chenille Sisters have brought to our new little family. It brought tears of joy to my eyes when my husband shared that he loved their harmony and the blending of their voices together. He even memorized the words to Teaching Hipopotami To Fly, before I did. Then I knew that he shared my thrill towards this CD. We dance around the kitchen with wild abandon entertaining our now one-year old son. This one's a keeper!

fun, upbeat music for kids that adults will also enjoy.......1999-03-27
This CD was our introduction to the Chenille Sisters, and it was an instant favorite of our whole family. The title song is hysterical, and has a great rhythmic beat to tap along with. My 8-year-old daughter also especially loves the poignant "Friends", about feelings when a dear friend moves away and a new friend moves in. Also great "My Family Went on a Vacation" -- be sure to listen carefully to "what that sentence really means" as the family travels to different countries and teaches kids to say stuff like, "My brother needs a diaper change" in Japanese or "I forgot to pack my underpants!" in German. Hysterical. The tight harmonies and clever lyrics make this a keeper in the car -- recommend for families with kids K-6 grade. My Brownie troop loves it too!

Love it!.......2001-03-04
My one year old bounces up & down with several of the tracks on this CD! A really peppy good time . . . just as fun for the adults as it is for the children. Not sappy & annoying like most children's music.
Amazingly diverse, great harmony, clever songs.......2000-07-05
We love this CD because the songs are clever and the music is fresh with varied rhythms. Better still, the CD has survived the "'One More Time' Toddler Repeatability Test:" after perhaps 300 bathtime playings, it's still enjoyable.
"Singing in the Tub" (the first song) is nice introduction to bathtime: very slow and mellow.
Some of the songs are very sophisticated, and the subtlety is lost on my toddler, but I can see where she will have new apprecation for them in a couple of years. For example, "At the Codfish Ball" can-tains tons of puns and can be enjoyed on several levels.
Others are relatively simple and provide a subtle education. "The Harmony Song" provides a wonderful example of how combinations of the singers can produce different sounds. The "B" Song -- a joyous alternative to the Berenstain Bear's "B" book -- is a fun, fast-tempo rhyme.
Overall, a very enjoyable CD.

Great Vocal Trio With A Super Vintage Jazz Band.......2005-09-18
The Chenille Sisters are a great trio, relaxed (unlike the Andrew sisters with tight harmonies), clear sounding, and with simple harmonies.
Their fine voices match well with the excellent playing of the James Dapogny Chicago Jazz Band. The band plays true to the style of 1920's jazz all the way through 40's small band swing.
Included in this collection of classic popular jazz/swing numbers is one of Dapogny's original song, "Tell Me, Tell Me Baby," a song that fits in perfectly with the others.
I especially enjoy their rendition of Harry Warren's fun song, "Nagasaki," as well as the mellow and almost eerie song, "The House is Haunted," and the Morie Amsterdam (of Dick Van Dyke fame) West Indies style song, "Rum and Coca Cola." Although the Chenille sisters have put out several other CD's, it is a shame they have not produced more in this genre.
As a fan of 20's and 30's remakes, I give this two thumbs up. Great familiar "feel good music" done by exceptional artists.
Sweet Harmony & Swinging Jazz.......2005-01-04
Here are some things I like that this disc reminds me of: The Roches, the soundtrack to Woody Allen's Sweet & Lowdown, The Andrews Sisters, many favorite jazz standards. If you like any of those things, you may enjoy this. Immediately listenable and a good selection of standards. Reocmmended.
A swingin' trip down memory lane!.......2001-09-26
I first came across the Chenille Sisters through a Halloween segment on that wonderful radio program "A Prairie Home Companion". On the show, they sang a version of "The House is Haunted", and I was hooked right away. The song prompted me to track down the album it came from, and here it is.
The songs that are presented have a pretty fair range of jazz/big band music from the 1920's to the 40's, but none seem out of place when put together on the album.
This really is a great disc that calls to mind Golden Age Radio. Fans of the Andrews Sisters will be quite pleased with the results, and with the original stamp that the Chenilles put on the old standards.
All of the selections showcase the marvelous vocalizations of the Cenille Sisters, especially "Little White Lies". Other stand-outs include "Sentimental Journey", "Button Up Your Overcoat", "Nagasaki", "Low Gravy", and of course, "The House is Haunted".
Impossible to Pigeon-Hole.......2001-06-07
The Chenilles are mostly known for their work on Prairie Home Companion. They're sort of contemporary folk artists, but then they aren't. They are storytellers of the highest caliber. So, where does this cd fall? It's big band music with a girl group. Not exactly folksy, but quite remarkable. These women have a range in style that defies definition.
The songs are from the 20's to the 50's. They range in attitude from Sentimental Journey to The Codfish Ball. The harmonies are extraordinary. The arrangements are tight. James Dapogny's band is marvelous and needs to be recording more.
If you're a fan of the Chenilles, get this cd. You won't be disappointed. If you like band music, get this cd. This is a great piece of work and I wish they'd record Whatcha Gonna Swing Tongiht II?
My absolute favorite CD..........2000-09-19
Take the best of the traditional jazz bands. Add the best of the "girl group" trios. That's what this album gives. They've taken a marvelous collection of novelty songs from the '20's - '40's and done some really fine arrangements, both vocal and instrumental. The Chenille sisters voices blend together so well they practically function as one instrument. And the interplay between the vocals and the band exceeds anything I've heard.
Buy this CD if you have any interest at all in traditional jazz music or in American popular song.

Awesome!.......2003-01-11
This CD is full of life. The Chenille Sisters are wonderful. Their voices harmonize beautifully, the lyrics are often hilarious, and every time Ilisten to them I want to get up and dance! "Suzy" makes me happy every time I listen to it. Have you ever listened to a song over and over and over? This is it. I love them.
The Chenille Sisters are Fabulous Fun.......2000-04-19
A friend gifted me with this CD and it rapidly became my favorite .... their beautiful voices blend in great harmony ... but it's the tongue in cheek lyrics, like Regret What I Said (my all time favorite) and Seduced that just made me fall in love with them! You want to listen to some wonderful music, and have a few good chuckles .. this is the CD to add to your collection!
Love it, one of my car tapes........1999-07-03
I very rarely actually listen to lyrics. The songs on this CD not only provide me with wonderful entertainment but also make me laugh. I make everyone that enters my car domain listen to this group. Especially the "Regretting what I said" song. LOOOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
A Must-Have.......1999-04-24
I first heard the Chenille Sisters on PBS several years ago & fell in love with their music. I have every album they've ever made & have never been disappointed. 'Regretting What I Said' will make you laugh out loud. 'Suzy' is cute & catchy. You will want to sing & dance along, not to mention finding yourself humming their tunes long after you've put the CD away for a rest.
Raw Chenille!.......1998-09-27
This Freshman disc by the swingin' Chenille Sisters gives you a sense of their roots - acoustic, infectious ... delicious! Retro faves such as "I'll See You in C-U-B-A" and "Dinah" are so lush, harmonious and musical - you'll want to sip rum punch with the former, a julep with the latter. "Suzy" is a very up-tempo paen to a very modern babe (best served live - but this recording holds up just fine). Go for this and you'll want the rest!

Chocolate Chip Cookie is Better Than Nookie? Not for kids!.......2003-07-22
I really enjoy this CD, very fun and full of delight. The chocolate song is adorable, but parents beware! There is a phrase that says a "chocolate chip cookie is better than nookie!" Now , please! Even though children may not know what nookie means, it still should not be on a CD marketed for children. By all means buy it for yourself! But maybe not for your kids!!!
These women can harmonize! Cute lyrics, happy rhythm!.......2000-01-26
A quirky collection of musical images. "Chocolate" simply melts in one's mouth! The rewrite of "La Bamba" ("Aye, your mama") will ring true for quite a few 20- and 30-something singles! "I am a Can of Tuna" hits on themes of global ecology, spurned love, and eating binges. Maybe walls can't talk, but this can of tuna does! And "Big Hair" is a scream!

On their seventh album, True to Life, the Chenille Sisters sound like the Roches more than ever. Like their models, the Chenilles (Cheryl Dawdy, Connie Huber, and Grace Morand of Ann Arbor, Michigan) sing a mix of comic and serious material in a spirited blend of '40s-pop and '60s-folk vocal harmonies. The production by Darleen Wilson (Bill Morrissey, Patty Larkin), and the singing are both top-notch, but what ultimately sinks this album is the half-hearted nature of the material. The serious songs are more sentimental than provocative, and the comic songs are more smug than irreverent. Dawdy's "I Lie in the Dark," for example, means to be a brave, child's-eye view of fighting parents, but its thoroughly conventional comments make it sound like a Tammy Wynette single with less melody and a more sluggish rhythm. "Help! I'm Turning into My Parents" tries hard to be an irreverent send-up of the aging baby-boomer generation, but you can see the ancient punchlines coming from so far away that they make no impact when they finally arrive. Huber's "Pizza Deliverance," a send-up of tabloid religious miracles, and Morand's "Love of Your Life," a skeptical look at love and marriage, fall similarly flat. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
This CD gets lots of airtime in our household!.......2006-12-08
I bought this CD many years ago after seeing them perform their song, Namedroppings, on a late night TV show. I loved their gorgeous voices and harmonies and how clever this song was.
This particular CD is a collection of humorous songs, ballads and a few just regular songs. Like many albums, most songs are memorable, one or two aren't. But I can forgive the few that aren't, because the ones that are memorable are truly wonderful. You have the haunting tear-jerker, I Lie in the Dark, followed immediately by the hilarious, Help! I'm Turning Into My Parents, to get you laughing again.
As many times as I've listened to this CD I never tire of it, and all the friends with whom we've shared it have also loved it. It's definitely on the A-list in our household!
Classic Chenille.......2003-11-03
This CD is a favourite of mine. Personally, "Co-dependent with you" competes with "Help, I'm turning into my Parents" for some of their all-time best stuff.
It Grew On Me.......2000-12-05
I purchased this CD on the strength of a single song, Codependent With You, which I happened to hear on some random Pittsburgh station a few years ago. There's an inherent danger to this kind of impulse buy; how often does one end up with a CD where the only good song is the one for which the CD was purchased? And at first, I was disappointed. Having not read anything about the group or the CD, I was expecting more humorous songs; as it turns out, only about a third of the CD could be classified that way. But the remainder grew on me, slowly. The beautiful harmonizing is one of the bright points.
Eclectic, very enjoyable, folk music.......1999-08-06
I first heard The Chenille Sisters on "A Prairie Home Companion" several months ago (Oct 1998), and I had to get one of their albums! I was not at all disappointed in choosing this one.
The album is an uneasy mix of humerous and sentimental songs; it's a challenge to listen to the whole thing without going through something akin to mood swings. But that's how much I enjoy listening, in that I want to get involved in every song they do. They're that good.
The humorous songs are just that, humorous. I can listen to "Help I'm Turning Into My Parents", "Name Droppings" and "Co-Dependent With You" ("you're my albatross / but you're still the boss") again and again and still get a really good chuckle out of them.
Some of the sentimental songs are pretty good, but forgettable. Two standouts are the cover of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" (accompanied only by harmonium -- lovely), and "Long Ago" which is just a devastatingly melancholy ballad. It's really one of the finest songs I have ever heard. Other highlights are "Love Of Your Life" and "Faces".
