Customer Reviews:
Ohshima composes a score worthy of the King........2003-02-11
For some fans, Akira Ifukube's distinctive march will be the only theme for Godzilla (hence its inclusion here). Too bad, for Michiru Ohshima has created a theme in her score for Godzilla vs Megaguirus that compliments the King of the Monsters quite well, for it is every bit as driving and majestic as the Big G itself. The Meganula and Megaguirus themes are also a nice piece of composing, striking just the right balance between alien and creepy. Fans of fantasy film scores in general and Godzilla scores in particular will be doing themselves a big disservice if they skip this one. Highly recommended.
Not Ifukube... thank god!!! Instead an ORIGINAL soundtrack!!.......2001-12-22
Ifukube was the father of GODZILLA music, and while he wrote some great themes, as a whole he became lazy and recycled music ad-nausium. Most of his music for the last cycle of GODZILLA movies "borrowed" music that he wrote 30 years ago!! Now we have a great Godzilla soundtrack that is thrilling and beautifully orchestrated, without the endless re use of the same tired music. MICHIRU OSHIMA has followed her own sense of style, and produced a new and exciting sound. Bold, yet subtle. Able to deftly balance the human and monster action . Lush orchestrations with a mix of both western influences and Japaneese origins. A terrific change of pace in Godzilla music, and like HATORI's music for SPACE GODZILLA and GODZILLA 2000, a wonderful and refreshing change from the IFUKUBE themes. Yeah... I know that some people can't seem to see past the idea that someone else than Ifukube could write Godzilla music. But this should (but most likely won't) quiet them. If you are a fan of film music, or a Godzilla fan, this is a terrific CD.
Rockin' Battle Theme! Others Good, Too.......2001-09-06
This is a very good album, with moments reminiscent of John Willams and John Barry scores. There are many additional unique themes (for the Griffon fighter ship, the Meganula, and the Dimension Tide weapon), but the best is the really *rockin'* battle theme on tracks 18-21. The latest Godzilla theme (see "Fateful Confrontation") is good piece of music, but not entirely G-like. It starts off ominous and majestic, but suddenly adds a military flavor -- a good theme for a gladiator movie, but for Godzilla?. The Ifukube purists get two extra tracks, with the "Godzilla rising from the sea" trumpets but not the traditional Godzilla theme. There are also 6 short sound effects. All in all, I liked this album better than the Godzilla 2000 Millennium score and look forward to other scores by Michiru Ohshima.

Customer Reviews:
Most essential British rock'n'roll purchase.......2005-10-08
British rock and roll is rather thin on the ground. There are a few essential tracks - Vince Taylor's Brand New Cadillac, Cliff Richard and the Drifter's Move It, Johnny Kidd's Please Don't Touch - and a few collectable artists such as Marty Wilde, Wee Willie Harris and Joe Brown. Most aspiring Brit rock and rollers were steered by monolithic old-guard managers into the more lucrative "family entertainment" arena, rock'n'roll being seen as a worthless delinquent fad; witness Tommy Steele progressing from Rock With The Cavemen to Tommy The Toreador in three short years.
When it comes to albums, top of any aspiring collectors' list has to be Billy Fury's 1960 10" album The Sound Of Fury. The whole album was produced by Jack Good and recorded (apart from one already completed track) in two epic three-hour sessions on 14th April. It speaks volumes that in order to get the slap-bass sound they knew from records by Gene Vincent, Bill Haley and the like they needed two bass players, one to play the notes on bass guitar and the other to slap the bass, because no-one knew the technique. Don't knock it though, it worked, and Joe Brown's Scotty Moore-style guitar work is great. All ten songs were written by Billy Fury (using the pseudonym Wilbur Wilberforce) and encompass rockabilly, blues and country influences. He, too, was later to be steered towards the big ballad style of the all round entertainer, but is here presented doing the sort of material he loved best.
This two-CD album presents the unadorned mono 10" album on disc one, clocking in at under 23 minutes, but also adds a valuable bonus disc. Stereo versions of all the album tracks (excluding the previously recorded Turn My Back On You) turned up in America in 1988 (presumably in the possession of Jack Good). They seem to be mixes of the same takes as those on the album with the exception of That's Love, although the sleeve notes are ambivalent. These give the recordings an immediacy and presence that make them definitive.
An alternative take, in stereo, of his 1959 single Maybe Tomorrow is followed by a further nine mono bonus tracks. These consist of the single My Christmas Prayer (to be covered in 1993 by St Etienne), the entire Billy Fury No. 2 EP (including the excellent Don't Jump) and the B-sides to Jealousy, Letter Full Of Tears and I'd Never Find Another You, which present the orchestral side of Billy Fury in 1961 and 1962.
the great sounds of Billy Fury.......2004-12-27
The name of Billy Fury is nearly always associated to "Halfway to Paradise", but he left a full rich catalog of ballads, rock n roll and pop songs. He enjoyed many chart entries in UK. When the Beatles led the so-called "british invasion" of the US charts, many other british bands or solo artists followed them, but Billy Fury did not take part of that invasion.
There are today CDs that rescue his music that remained forgotten during a long time, he had a very good voice, it is worth listening to these songs today, either to remember them or listen to them for the 1st time.
British Rock...Before The Beatles.......2003-11-20
Most American fans of rock n' roll's early years have never heard of Billy Fury, which is a shame.
Fury (real name Ronald Wyncherly) was arguably one of the best of Britain's pre-Beatle 1950's rock n' roll singers (along with his contemporaries, the much more well-known Cliff Richard & the much less known Johnny Kidd.)
"The Sound of Fury" is raw rockabilly at it's most primitive (which, for most rock n' roll purists, is a GOOD thing.)
Two songs in praticular, stand out in my mind when listening to this album. "Turn My Back On You" shows the late Fury's obvious love of Sun Records-style rockabilly, with it's strong bass & limited use of drums. "Don't Jump" (an ode to an attempted suicide over a broken heart) is early '60's "guitar twang", accompanied by Fury's Presley-like pouting vocals. (Fury, like Cliff Richard, was a huge fan of Elvis Presley & in fact, had met "the King" on the set of the latter's filming of "Girls, Girls, Girls" in 1962.)
Fifties nostalgia fans who are looking for soft pop-rock "malt-shop memories" type of fare won't find much to peak their interst in "The Sound of Fury" (& to be honest, some of the album's recordings are a bit too primitive sounding for mainstream audiences.)
However, for those serious rock n' roll collectors, as well as those hard-core rockabilly fans, "The Sound of Fury" is an absolute must have & a prime example of how often times, non-Americans can get an American popular art form more "right" than many Americans themselves.
As an interesting side-note, Billy Fury/Ronald Wyncherly was also a native of Liverpool (like his four more famous neighbors who "invaded" our shores, years later in 1964.)
Fury died in 1983 of a heart-attack.

Beautiful, BEAUTIFUL music.......2005-11-23
This cd contains some of the finest music ever. Vesala's jazz group doesn't play along the old-fashioned sidelines of traditional "jazz" but creates a boiling hotpot of it's own. There are some serene pieces, such as "Sarastus" ("dawn") evoking deep, visual landscapes, and hard-hitting rhytmic work. Vesala's death in 1999 was a major loss, but this album is always my favourite - the sound world is in my opinion "warmer" than in "Ode to the death of jazz", for example.
The only artist I could really compare Vesala to is Charles Mingus. Both made use of thoroughly and fully composed pieces, played with lush, emotional orchestrations and involved bandleading. Vesala pulls no punches. Yet he has tenderness in his compositions. Listen to this!
A Finnish Mingus.......2002-12-11
Edward Vesala ( who passed away in 1999) was a musical visionary. This is the first CD of his I have ever picked up so I cannot tell you if it is his best or most representative. What I can tell you is that this is unusually powerful and beautiful music that is obviously the result of years of work.
My understanding is that his group Sound and Fury lived at Vesala's house and participated in marathon practice sessions in order to live up to his demanding standards.
All I can say is that if this is true then I, for one, am the richer for their efforts. The ensemble playing is absolutely perfect.
The group on this record consists of the following:
Jorma Tapio- alto sax, bass clarinet, flute, bass flute and percussion
Jouni Kannisto- tenor sax and flute
Pepa Päivinen- tenor, soprano and baritone saxes, flute and alto flute
Matti Riikonen- trumpet
Iro Haarla- piano, harp, keyboards
Jimi Sumen- guitar (and also the recording engineer)
Edward Vesala- drums and percussion.
They are joined by Marko Ylönen on the cello on tracks 2,4,5,8 and 9, Pekka Sarmanto on bass on track 1 and Mark Nauseef on the bongos on track 3.
One thing missing from this listing is whoever is responsible for the electronic effects used throughout the piece. These are wonderfully varied and more sophisticated than what are usually heard for jazz recordings. On track 1 and 4, for example, Vesala uses distorted voices reading in English or in Finnish to create weird backgrounds for the music. I suspect that most of the effects are being done by Vesala or Haarla or Sumen but no one is credited for their efforts. Too bad. They're good.
The chords are usually sound by the mass of the horns with individual voices briefly stating melodic variations. The guitar is frequently crunchy with industrial, distorted chording or quirky single note runs. Vesala's approach to drumming is as unusual as his sense of orchestration- he ornaments the rhythm rather than state it. At times, he sounds very African, other times he sounds like a very free jazz drummer. His is probably the dominant solo voice on the record.
Which brings up one of the odd things about his music. Vesala came out of the European free jazz tradition but on this recording the music sounds almost completely written out with very few soli other than what Vesala does with his drumming. Of course, I could be wrong.
The result, in any case, is some of the best music I know. His music lives in the spaces between contemporary classical and jazz, between parody and homage, between individual vision and tradition. This is music that sounds like nothing else but immediately makes sense. This is music that will definitely take you out of just about anybody's idea of what constitutes the mainstream and it is very much worth the trip.
This CD is my introduction to Vesala but I already regret his loss. Musicians like him do not come along very often.

Customer Reviews:
Cerquetti's Abigaille.......2003-09-06
First off, it should be known to the potential buyer that these are HIGHLIGHTS only. The mono sound is acceptable. Orchestra and chorus are average at best. The focus clearly is on Anita Cerquetti and her rendition of Abigaille. Even though in the booklet listing of tracks her name is omitted on the last cue point. I never heard this singer live. My first encounter with her voice was the studio GIOCONDA with del Monaco and Simionato and I liked it very much. As Abigaille I find her less convincing. The voice is beautiful and even. But she cannot convey Abigaille's high flying ambitions. She sounds noble most of the time. Never aggressive or infuriated or spiteful or menacing. Her repentance/dying scene is superficial. Which makes me wonder how often Miss Cerquetti may have had the chance to sing this role during her brief career and develop a feeling for it. At times she unexpectedly breaks a phrase to catch her breath, which I find somewhat irritating. And some climax seem "rushed". It's also a bit disappointing to me that the "Salgo gia" cabaletta gets no repeat. Guess such were the customs in those years, even for concert performances. I am pleased with Messrs. Dondi (in the title role) and Trama. Aside from their vocal qualities I find them very much in character. Also the singers of Fenena and Ismaele made me prick up my ears. Taken all in all, it's worthwhile to have this document. It will nicely supplement your studio NABUCCO. It's been a guilty pleasure of mine to compare Anita Cerquetti to Elena Suliotis and Dino Dondi to Tito Gobbi. And I wish that one day the Metropolitan Opera's NABUCCO with Leonie Rysanek under the baton of Thomas Schippers will appear on CD.
Good soloists, mediocre chorus, mono recording.......2002-10-24
The soloists are very good, but the chorus (key in this opera) is not on the same level. "Va Pensiero", the famous chorus piece, is very weakly done. The mono recording is only just adequate, OK for the soloists but flat and dull for stage presence and orchestration.
Blistering Vocalism.......2001-02-23
I first heard this rare pearl over 20 years ago on some faded third-generation cassette. Despite the dim sonics, I was thrilled to hear a diva who could actually negotiate the scorching roulades of Abigaille's music while still sounding like a singer and not some wounded forest creature howling in pain. Apart from Callas' live performance, we've had precious little to celebrate in recorded Abigailles. Sure, Scotto lit a few fires with her EMI pressing, but who wouldn't with a microphone clenched betweeen her teeth and the volume control nailed in place at the top of the control panel? For Heaven's sake, most of the current generation of half-wit dimpled divettes and "sound-enhanced" melody muffins could come off like an Abigaille with the right studio wizards calling the shots.
Cerquetti was the REAL thing. Like Margharita Roberti (listen to her in Christoff's ATTILA recording), Caterina Mancini and Fedora Barbieri, she came from a school of barnstormers who could shake the foundations of San Carlo or La Scala with truly schooled, crafted voices that emanated from the viscera and not the top of the larynx. Cerquetti was one of the Queens of Can Belto, and this new release in great sound is one of the treasures among re-releases of the past decade. I cast aside all conservatory terminology and call this type of performance a ripsnorter for the ages. With Callas, Cerquetti, and Dimitrova on disc, and the rare likes of Linda Roark-Strummer performing the role onstage, the other studio bunnies can turn their attention to gentler repertoire and give the rest of us a break.
Glorious Cerquetti in very good Nabucco.......2000-07-19
With the exception of the famous Hebrew's choir 'Va pensiero', the number of recordings of 'Nabucco' is notably low. One possible reason is the extraordinary vocal demand of the female leading role, King Nabucco's daughter Abigaille. Very few sopranos have succeeded with this difficult role: Maria Callas, Elena Suliotis, Renata Scotto, Ghena Dimitrova (arguably the best). Now we have a live recording of the great Italian soprano Anita Cerquetti, and she is probably so good as Dimitrova. Cerquetti was one of the greatest sopranos of the century, although she had an astonishingly short carreer (she retired at the age of 30!). Most of her (scarce) recordings are live performances, so having any single piece of recording of her extraordinary voice is a real must. This Nabucco was one of the last documents of her operatic carreer, and here she sounds so splendid that it remains a mystery why she decided to give up singing so soon afterwards. The rest of the cast is very good, especially the bass Ugo Trama as the High Priest Zaccaria. Dino Dondi is a good Nabucco, but his interpretation of the title role is not a reference. The orchestra sounds well, and the choir efficiently provides the necessary support. The quality of sound is good for the time (1960). To Summarize: This incredibly low priced recording has an adequate combination of the elements needed for a good Nabucco: A very good choir, an excellent bass (Trama), a good baritone (Dondi) and a star of stars as princess Abigail: the great soprano Anita Cerquetti. Enjoy it!
Verdi at the most exciting way!.......2000-01-05
You have to buy this recording! Cerquetti is our and Verdi's dreams Abigaille! If you really are an opera fan or have any concern about Verdi you need this recording. Go for it!
